Do you think isdn and frame-relay expire?

in new ccnp book i didnt see any thing about isdn and some object
even in ccna exam i didnt see any question about isdn and if i remember about frame-relay
what's your opinion?do you think isdn and frame-relay expire?is there any place for this technology on it nowadays?
thanks

Hi Reza,
if you are talking about new CCNP curriculum, then ISDN and Frame relay technologies are no longer included there. ISDN and Frame relay were included in the Remote access paper of CCNP old curriculum but now that paper is replaced by Secure Converged Wide Area Networks paper which includes MPLS, IPSec VPNs and other technologies.
But as Rick said in earlier post that ISDN and frame relay are still very much in use.
hope it helps ... rate if it does ....

  • ISDN and FRAME-RELAY

    Hi All,
I currently have two 2500 routers, to get my hands dirty on ISDN and FRAME-RELAY experiments do i need seperate routers for them?. Because i cannot see where to connect to in regards to the required connections i.e.
    2 x Asynchronous/Synchronous Serial Interfaces (DB60)
    4 x Serial Interfaces (DB60)
    1 x ISDN Interface (RJ45)
    1 x Token Ring interface (DB9 and RJ45)
THat i normally hear about when refering to ISDN or FRAME RELAY.
    Somebody please put me through.
Secondly i would like to connect my 2500 to the internet ...please put me through how.
    Many thanks in Advance

    Olu
There are some challenges in what you want to do with this equipment. If each router has 1 x ISDN interface then you can use that for ISDN - but you will need some other piece of equipment to furnish the ISDN switch functionality. You can not just connect 2 ISDN interfaces back to back.
You would be able to do some testing of Frame Relay if you connected the routers back to back - if one of the cables is a DCE cable and one cable is a DTE cable. The testing that you can do with 2 routers back to back is somewhat limited. You could do much better testing if you had a third router which could be configured as a frame relay switch.
Connecting your routers to the Internet will be possible if you connect one of the serial interfaces to an Internet Service provider.
The routers have token ring LAN interfaces. Unless you have some token ring MAUs to establish the connections you will not be able to do effective testing using the token ring LAN interfaces.

  • When a download was completed while in Firefox, the download window appeared, and the file would be scanned for viruses. Now I no longer notice the scanning for virus process. What do you think happened, and how can I fix it - believe me, I've looked!

I've searched through extensions and add-ons, and checked Firefox's options and preferences, all to no avail.

    you must modify '''browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone'''
type in the address bar '''about:config'''
then press the button '''i'll be careful i promise'''
then type in the bar '''browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone'''
then''' double click on it''' to set it to '''true''' (probably you have it false)
    '''exit firefox''' and '''restart-it'''.

  • Fram Relay hub and spoke scenario

    See the attachment please
    Requirements:
1.Using only physical interfaces configure a Frame Relay hub-and-spoke network between RTA and RTB and RTC, RTB as the hub.
2.Traffic from RTA destined for RTC should transit RTB, and vice versa.
3.Use only the DLCIs specified in the diagram.
4.Do not use any Dynamic layer 3 to layer 2 mappings over these frame Relay connections.
5.Do not send any redundant broadcast traffic from the spokes to the hub.
    RTB (Hub):
    interface Serial0/0
    ip address 3.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
    encapsulation frame-relay
    frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.1 200 broadcast
    frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.3 300 broadcast
    no frame-relay inverse-arp
    RTA (Spoke):
    interface Serial0/0
    ip address 3.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
    encapsulation frame-relay
    frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.2 22 broadcast
    frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.3 22
    no frame-relay inverse-arp
    RTC (Spoke):
    interface Serial1/0
    ip address 3.1.1.3 255.255.255.0
    encapsulation frame-relay
    frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.2 33 broadcast
    frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.1 33
    no frame-relay inverse-arp
    My queries:
A- Does he use these two statements because (frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.3 22 and frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.1 33 ) of requirement number 2 ?
B- Doesn’t he use keyword “broadcast” in these two statements (frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.3 22 and frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.1 33) because of requirement 5?
C- Does that mean if requirement 5 is not there we should have used “broadcast“ keyword ?
D- Does not that contradict with what Cisco syas: “The broadcast keyword is commonly used with the frame relay map command” ?
E- By using these two statements (frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.3 22 and frame-relay map ip 3.1.1.1 33) doesn’t my network become full mesh? but if you look to the diagram it is partial mesh ?

    Answers to your queries:
    A. Correct
    B. Correct
    C. That depends. In most cases, it is a good idea to have broadcasts on, especially when using routing protocols like OSPF which send traffic to multicast destinations. I would habe it on most times.
    D. The recommendation from Cisco is not contradictory. The lab scenario is making you do something quite specific so you have to follow that. You don't always have to follow requirements in order to make things work.
    E. No. Full-mesh refers to a full mesh of PVCs. If there was a PVC from A to C it would be full mesh.
Hope that helps - pls rate the post if it does.

  • Can I backup a frame relay NNI trunk with ISDN?

I have four Cisco routers interlinked as frame relay switches. I would like to backup my NNI trunks with ISDN, is it possible? If so, how do I configure my frame-relay route statements to point to the ISDN if the same statements also point to the serial NNI trunk?

No, you cannot backup with ISDN a Frame relay NNI trunk.
ISDN can backup frame relay interfaces DTE-DCE.

  • Difrence between ... MPLS over Frame-Relay ATM

    Hai all,
Sorry to ask very basic quiestion ..can some one tell what is the difrnce and advantage of MPLS over ATM and Frame-Relay ......pls provide me a better link ..for refrnce
    Thanks in advance
    Lijesh

MPLS over ATM or MPLS over Frame-Relay it's not good idea, because if you use cell-mode labeling, you find someone limitation at this technology. DLCI and VPI/VCI value at this protocols it's not have large space. If you know how operate cell-mode, try to look at just for sample bits length with DLCI value at Frame-Relay protocol or VPI/VCI value at ATM protocol… Of course you can use same cheat like VCI-merge, but I think it's not very good idea.
Building new network infrastructure at this protocols it's not good idea… It's good idea to fast implement MPLS technology in old network infrastructure build with this protocols (just for sample, you can linked ATM forwarding plane and MPLS forwarding plane (in this situation you can abandon to use fixed configuration VPI/VCI for IP network and can use benefits offered ATM technology with MPLS)), but not for new network infrastructure. If you need to offer services with this protocols, you can use Any Transport Over MPLS technology.

  • Viop over Frame Relay QOS

I'm tryint to apply qos to our frame-relay links.
    Rferencing this document
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk652/tk698/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080094af9.shtml
    I'm using software vers. 123-14.T3
The problem I am having is that when I apply frame-relay traffic-shaping to the frame-relay serial interface all my data and voice get corrupted(very choppy voice, intermittant pings, application timeouts etc.) My network essentially slows to a crawl.
This occurs before I have applied the class to the dlci.
I would assume no traffic shaping would take place until I apply a class to the frame relay dlci.
Has anyone seen this or have any suggestions?

    Hello,
The moment you apply the command "frame-relay traffic-shaping" under the frame-relay serial interface, all the sub-interfaces/DLCIs will default to 56kbps CIR, since you haven't applied the class under the DLCI yet.
Best practice is to configure a default map-class with a higher CIR and apply that under the main interface before you configure frame-relay traffic-shaping. So, if there is no class defined under any sub-interface, the DLCI will inherit the traffic shaping parameters from the class defined under the main interface. If there is a class defined under the DLCI, the traffic shaping properties from that class will take affect for that DLCI.
    Hope that helps.

    Srikanth

  • Frame-relay - config a router as a switch

I am trying to configure a router as a frame-relay switch called R3.
    R1 (S0/1) is connected to my Frame-Relay Switch R3 (S1/0). R3 has a further 3 connections (S1/1, S1/2 & S1/3) to R2, R4 &R5. So R1 uses subinterfaces.
I am having problems configuring the switch to say connect R1 to R2.
    Here is my R1 config:
    Interface Serial0/0
    No ip address
    Encapsulation frame-relay
    interface Serial0/0.1 point-to-point
    ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
    frame-relay interface-dlci 16
    interface Serial0/0.2 point-to-point
    ip address 10.1.2.1 255.255.255.0
    frame-relay interface-dlci 17
    interface Serial0/0.3 point-to-point
    ip address 10.1.3.1 255.255.255.0
    frame-relay interface-dlci 18
Here is my Frame-Relay switch (R3) config:
    frame-relay switching
    Interface Serial1/0
    No ip address
    Encapsulation frame-relay
    Clock rate 64000
    Frame-relay intf-type dce
    interface Serial1/0.1 point-to-point
    frame-relay interface-dlci 16
    interface Serial1/0.2 point-to-point
    frame-relay interface-dlci 17
    interface Serial1/0.3 point-to-point
    frame-relay interface-dlci 18
    Interface Serial1/1
    No ip address
    Encapsulation frame-relay
    Clock rate 64000
    frame-relay interface-dlci 20
    Interface Serial1/2
    No ip address
    Encapsulation frame-relay
    Clock rate 64000
    frame-relay interface-dlci 21
    Interface Serial1/3
    No ip address
    Encapsulation frame-relay
    Clock rate 64000
    frame-relay interface-dlci 22
    Here is my R2 config:
    interface Serial0/0
    ip address 10.1.1.2 255.255.255.0
    encapsulation frame-relay
    no fair-queue
    frame-relay interface-dlci 20
Normally I would enter the frame-relay switch command?
    Frame-relay route 16 interface s1/1 20
I want to use subinterrfaces and not multipoint.
Why does this not work?? I cannot get connectivity from R1 to R2!

    John
It is fine to use subinterfaces on R1 and R2 (in fact it is best practice to use point to point subinterface for Frame Relay). But I do not believe that you can do subintefaces on the router that is acting as the switch. I believe that the key elements of the router as frame relay switch include: frame-relay switching (which you have), Frame-relay intf-type dce (which you have), and Frame-relay route 16 interface s1/1 20 (which you need to add in place of the subinterfaces with DLCI identifier).

  • Feet and Frames burn in

No help here, sorry, just curious.
How are you getting feet and frames from inside FCP? I'm only vaguely familiar with coding systems for film (sorry, haven't shot film for 20 years) but I'm not aware that FCP can read them with the standard TC filter.

  • What do you think of keyboard?

I am thinking about buying a iphone.  Am concerned about being able to hit the right key on the keypad.  What do you think?

And also if you trust it rather than trying to make it do what you want. I type with 2 thumbs in Portrait mode and it almost always guesses what I want, even when I miss the center of the key. But it takes practice learning not to outthink it.

  • How would you backup your Frame-relay links betweeen sites?

We have a need to backup or do overflow type routing between sites in the event our frame-relay line goes down or service is degraded. We are exploring several options such a VPN using a access circuit or ISDN. What stategy are you currently and are you happy with thte performance?

Other than an ISDN as backup you could get a lower CIR frame circuit from another vendor and load balence weighing the load to your primary circuit

  • Configuring Frame-Relay and the Frame-Relay Switch To Participate in WAN Routing

    Hey,
My WAN in my voice lab is currently functional between all of my routers HQ, BR1, and BR1 with full-mesh connectivity.  I am using my PSTN router for the frame-relay switching as is shown in the attached configs.  I have used the connect commands for the PVC routing logic.
    connect HQ-BR1 Serial0/3/0 101 Serial0/2/0 201
    connect HQ-BR2 Serial0/3/0 102 Serial0/2/1 301
    connect BR1-BR2 Serial0/2/0 202 Serial0/2/1 302
My question concerns the possibility of getting the PSTN router to participate in the WAN and the OSPF routing process?  The connect command tells how the PVCs are to be connected and pass through the PSTN router.  Is there anyway to do it so that a PVC connects to the PSTN router itself?
I would specifically like to create a connection between the HQ and PSTN router over the WAN.  If anyone has any insight on this I would really appreciate it.
    Thank you.

    Hello Adam,
you don't need to do FR switching.
You just need to configure a back to back PVC associated to a p2p subinterface under PSTN router interface se0/3/0 and HQ:se0/1/0. the new PVC can be 103 on both sides
    PSTN
    interface ser0/3/0.103 point-to-point
    ip address 10.1.13.1 255.255.255.0
    frame-relay interface-dlci 103
    HQ
    interface ser0/1/0.103 point-to-point
    ip address 10.1.13.1 255.255.255.0
    frame-relay interface-dlci 103
note: I was able to do this using the older syntax frame-relay route under interface configuration on frame relay switch. I would expect to work for you too with newer syntax connect.
    Hope to help
    Giuseppe

  • Ipx over frame relay and route redistribution

    Hi,
When I configure ipx over frame-relay multipoint interface, I need to run eigrp and disable the split horizon, and I'm running ipx rip on the same router thus, redistribution is automatic by default. This will cause potential routing loop when the route is advertised back from the same interface. In this situation, I have few questions:
    1. How to prevent routing loop in this situation?
    2. What is the administrative distance for ipx rip, eigrp, nslp?
    3. How does eigrp and rip convert the metric?
    Thank you

Did you know that Verizonwireless is saving your checking account information when you pay your bill by check and then making it part of your "MyVerizon"  without you adding it? This means of course if they get hacked that information could be compromised. What do you think of this?

Credit card and debit card and checking and savings information is encrypted so it is possible to be hacked, but the odds are greater to get hit by the Love Boat then to have a wide scale hack.
Oh yes they do happen, Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, Target and quite a few others. But in all the years I have paid my invoice with saved card information I never been hacked.
You use good passwords and the risk is minimal.
