Do you uninstall old verison before installing new Version of Java

I have read on Suns website you should keep older versions installed due to some pages will need it to view properly. I have read many different opinions some say keep them installed and others say remove them.
What is the right answer?
This is my current version from the Console Screen
Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_01
Using JRE version 1.4.2_01 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
This information is from the about screen
Java 2 platform standard edition
Version 1.4.2_01 (build 1.4.2_01-b06)
I have Windows XP Media Center 2005 Edition (SP2) Intel P4 3.4 GHz, 2GB ram
Please advise

I keep most of my installations, but it's enough to keep one of each major version. I.e one 1.4, one 1.5, and so on.

  • Do I need to uninstall previous version of Firefox before installing new version?

I am worrried about installing new version (3.6.13 ) since old version (3.0.15) is working o.k. Can you advise?

When you install a release version of Firefox (current version is 3.6.15), it will by default replace the existing version. There is no need to uninstall the old version first.

  • UNINSTALL OLD HP AND INSTALL NEW ONE

I want to uninstall my HP 2050 and install new HP 4510.  How do I do this?  I am 84 alone visually impaired and need simplest explanation.  thank you.

Hello @airlinelady , I hope you are well
I will do my best to help you uninstall your 2050 and install your new printer.
Before I provide any instructions, I will need to know which Operating System you are running on your computer. All you need to do is click this link - Whats My OS, and when the windows pops up, it will tell you which Operating System you are running (Windows 7 for example).
Also, I cannot find the printer you mentioned you want to install. Please check the model number of the printer and please clarify the information. This link will help you find the model number: How Do I Find My Model Number?
Please write me back with those two pieces of information and I will help with uninstalling and reinstalling your printers.

  • Do I need to remove old drivers before installing new ones (Windows XP)

I have an  Acer Aspire 3690 laptop with Windows XP home edition installed. I've reinstalled the OS by using recovery tool, updated it again. I want to finish setting my laptop up by updating some drivers, mainly chipset and GPU. I've already found that newer ones are availabe. But do I need remove the old drivers first to avoid any problems in the future? Or do I just run the setup executable of every driver?

Run the setup and check if the new one are installed; if not remove the old drivers and install the new.

    ok I'm good to go.
I had to uninstall QT first, used the Windows Installer clean up (found in another post) and used it to remove the iTunes installer left in the system.
After uninstalling QT and using the Installer clean up, I then used the iTunes newer version to update and all is well. It even shows up in my Add/Remove programs now!
    PHEW! Panic attack.

You have a general.useragent.override pref that makes your Firefox version appear a Firefox/3.6.13 in the user agent.
    *Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; hr; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6.13 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0C)

  • Quick quesion about installing newer versions of Java

I've got Windows XP Home and I had a quick check in Add or Remove (in Control Panel) and realised that I've got: -
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5 and
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
I've read that Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0.7 is available.
I also heard that some older versions of Java may have security holes so should I install Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0.7 and if yes, should I delete the older versions that I've already got?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Generally the most current version (excluding an initial family release that introduces new features, like 1.5.0) is the most bug-free, since the changes incorporated are bug fixes only.
None of the versions 1.5.0_05, _06, or _07 have any known security problems.
Since Java versions are independent, unless you have a specific reason otherwise, only one version is required. Uninstall in reverse install order before installing a new version to minimize potential problems.

  • Installing new versions of Java

First let me say I am a first time poster and hope I havent broken any rules. I am not a developer, just a home user who gets periodic prompts to update Java. My disk space is getting low and I noticed I have many versions of Java and JS2E Runtime Environment installed. I guess I assumed when I install an update, Java eliminates/overwrites previous versions. I now have over 1300 MB used up between Java and JS2E Runtime Environment. Hopefully, my question is VERY simple. Can I safely remove the previous versions wihtout totally messing up my PC? Again, please excuse my lask of knowledge regarding forum use. I'e never been in one before, and thnk you in advance for assistance with my very minor issue. I really just need the disk space!

You can go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and remove all JRE installations.
Reboot and go to [http://www.java.com/en/download/|http://www.java.com/en/download/] and fetch and install the latest JRE.
You might want to use something like TreeSize to see where all your disk space has gone.

  • Before installing new activation-free version of CS2, during uninstall of old Photoshop, should I ke

Before installing new activation-free version of CS2, during uninstall of old Photoshop, should I keep or remove preferences and should I use standard or advanced uninstall?

Thank you very much for that info.
Also, I believe I will need to choose the Advanced uninstall option because the Standard uninstall states it will keep activation data.  As I will need to use the new activation number, I think Advanced is the more thorough way to go.
    Thanks again.

  • Do I have to uninstall old Brother printer before installing new one?

I have a Brother all-in-one MFC420CN that has seen better days. Just bought a new Brother all-in-one MFC-J615W. Do I have to uninstall the old one before installing the new? If so, how do I do that and how do I make sure I've gotten rid of everything connected wtih the old printer?

You don't have to uninstall the old printer. It is not going to cause you any trouble, just make the new printer the default one. If you want to uninstall it, go to System Preferences>Print & Scan. Click on the old printer and click the minus sign on the bottom.

  • Do I need to uninstall the old Firefox before installing the new version?

I really don't have any problems with Firefox, just trying to find out if it is necessary to uninstall Firefox 4, before installing the new version?

no, in fact, it's better to update it instead of installing the new one separately so that you don't loose your bookmarks and such.
To update, open firefox and go to Help and chose About Firefox. you should see an update button there.

  • HT1926 When Installing new version error is quicktime cannot uninstall old version

When trying to install new version of Quicktime, I get a error message that quicktime cannot uninstall old version. This also affects Itunes to work. Get Message Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. I think not having quicktime working affects my Itunes from launching.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATION" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up").
In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC. Now try another QuickTime install. Does it go through properly this time?
