Doc file, no MS OFFICE

I installed NeoOffice which is 1 great program. it reads both .doc files and Excel files. And it is free unless you chose to send a donation. I only use NeoOffice when folks send me those files. Otherwise, I use Pages. I just thought some users would like to know about NeoOffice.

Well, I certainly did not mean to violate the Terms of Use. I have seen a lot of posts about MS Office vs Pages and the plus and minus points of both. Personally, I used to use Appleworks, then, switched to Pages. But there are times, I needed a spreadsheet (before Numbers) and for that, I started with NeoOffice and I think it is an excellent program. I apologize if I did the wrong thing. Perhaps I should have responded to a different post instead of starting a new topic.

  • How to get total number of pages from .doc file without using Office interop?

    Hi,
Kindly help me in getting the total number of pages from a .doc file not .docx file using C#. I know how to get by using Office interop but I do not want to use Office interop.
So, without office automation in C# let me know how to get the total number of pages from a .doc file.

Could you tell us why you don't want to use Office interop?
As far as I know, this is the easiest way to achieve.Hmmm, this is my answer

  • Associating .doc files with open office

I have open office installed on my iMac. When I open an MS Word document using the basic File--->Open it opens it with no problem.
However, when I click on it I get an error dialog that says the "script could not be run because.
    -43"
How can I associate documents with open office?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What version of OO are you using? Are you using some sort of OO launching script? Do you have the current version of X11 installed?
I don't use OO rather I use NeoOffice Aqua because it doesn't require the use of X11.

  • Evolution has stoped associating doc files with open office

I've recently upgraded to open office 2.3 and since doing it evolution no longer gives me the option to open doc attachments, I only get the save option.
I'm running fluxbox and no gnome apps such as nautilus, how can I put the association back?

This looks like it could be the/an answer:

  • Opening xls or doc file with MS Office sets user permissions to no access.

We have a problem with MS Office and permissions. Basically, opening an MSOffice file removes that user's permissions, not just for that file, but for the entire fileserver. Going back to the server as Admin and resetting the permissions does not take effect immediately, but at some seemingly random point later that same day. The Win XP users also find themselves locked out of using the files sometimes, when one user opens the file the permissions seem to change to give that user ownership and others only Read Only access. I have not experienced this problem, but I do not use MS Office.
We run a mixed PC and Mac office. We have a Mac miniserver with Snow Leopard Server. Client computers use Win XP, or OS X Leopard 10.5.8. Previously we were running the same clients from a G5 PowerMac running Tiger server. This also had problems with permissions changing themselves after opening MSOffice for Mac 2004 files, but nothing quite as bad as this.
We also have had problems with MSOffice crashing when for some reason the sharepoints disconnected themselves.
Any suggestions please? This is the kind of issue that will force a change away from Mac... sadly I will be in a minority if I cannot find a fix.
    TIA

    Further Info:
We appear to have both oplock and Strict Locking enabled, as well as AFP and SMP in operation. Of these two protocols, we have to keep SMB so the PCs can access the files; AFP we could give up if necessary, although that makes connection times slow on the Macs.
I read that if we enable both AFP and SMB our data could be corrupted, but it didn't say what would happen to file permissions, nor how we could prevent multiple users accessing the same file simultaneously if we switched the locking off.

  • How do I fix MS Office crashes on saving doc file (docx OK)?

I am running OX 10.8.2 and MS Office 2011. I know, the latter is my first mistake but I need it for work. I ran an updater for Office yesterday (before which it was running to its usual standards). Now I can save docx files fine but if I open a .doc file and try to save it the program freezes ('MS Word not responding'). I have deleted the plist file and all of the autorecovery files. I ran the latest OS firmware update today and checked for more MS updates. There are none available. Nothing has helped. Any suggestions are welcomed. I know that I can resave stuff as docx files as a temporary workaround but I need to send .doc files to some colleagues who have not updated. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you are sure it's the update, then you can either report it to Microsoft via feedback option off Help in Word and wait for a fix or just uninstall the current version of MS Office you have and install the old version back (the one you have on the CD.  However, be aware that when you do this, if you're using Outlook for your email, your main identity will be upgraded as part of that Service Pack install you did.  When you install the old version back, you won't be able to run Outlook with that upgraded identity.  The only way to fix this that I know of is to delete the Microsoft User Data folder in your Documents folder.  However, when you do this, IT'LL ALSO DELETE YOUR EMAIL AND ACCOUNT PROFILE out of Outlook.  If you must do this to fix your issue, then BEFORE YOU UNINSTALL OFFICE run an Export of your email and other info out of Outlook and save that so you can import it back after the reinstall.

Not sure, but MacKeeper is trash and could be the source of it, among any other problems you may be having.  I suggest you uninstall it immediatley: http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/

  • Since installing Open Office 4.0 I cannot open .doc files on the fly, used to work before.

I've recently upgraded to Open Office 4.0. Now cannot open .doc attachments from Thunderbird. I can download to disc and open into Open Office Writer with Power Desk or Windows Explorer in the usual way. I've checked tools/options/attachments and it's set to Open Office Writer. I think this is irrelevant, but when I had Open Office 3.0 I had Writer set as a separate program, but I am now using just the master front end.
Works OK with .pdf or .jpg files.

just delete the entry from the attachments windows and then try and open a doc file. The entry will be recreated using your responses.
I am guessing the existing Writer is not the correct Writer.

  • Will office 11 work with lion and old doc files?

I updated to Lion and my old office will not work... will office 11 be able to read and use my old office files ...word and excel?

Office 2011 will work with Lion, old doc files will work with 2011 as long as MS hasn't done something in Office 2011.  I have had no problems with files from as far back as office 2003 with 2011.

  • My netbook came with MS Works, it's useless. I've downloaded Open Office, but every time I try to open a document (usually .doc files) it opens automatically as a Works wps file. I can't get it to change! Do I just have to uninstall Works?

Just as above, Works makes documents crazy (eg someone sends me a .doc file by email, I go to open it and it automatically opens as a .wps and I can't get it to stop!) and no-one else can open .wps documents. I know this may not actually be specifically a Firefox issue but have tried a few things on netbook settings etc and am getting nowhere fast.
    Any advice much appreciated x

  • "uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version" error message when opening a *.doc file with Word already running

Several customers running different versions of Office 2011 (14.4.1-14.4.5) on OSX varying from 10.7.5 to 10.9.5, running on various kinds of hardware (iMac/MacBook Pro/MacBook Air) of various ages are having issues opening *.doc files if the Word is already open. The error message that gets displayed is, "XXXX.doc uses a file type that is blocked from opening in this version"
When the customer tries to open the same file via File-Open, she gets "The file is locked for editing. you can open the file as read-only".
When trying to do so, she gets "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters".
If Word gets Force-quit, the same document opens without any problems.
    1. Repairing Disk permissions was ran several times. and the volume was found to be OK.
    2. I have noticed that in this scenario either deleting the normal.dotm or com.microsoft.word.plist (~/Library/Preferences) sometimes resolves the issue, sometimes it doesn’t. There is no pattern to follow. All versions of Office are affected, the fully updated and the non-updated ones.
    3. I have tried completely removing the suite using Office 2011 Uninstall.app and/or Remove Office 2011 Uninstaller.pkg, then going through customer's library and manually removing all the Office references.
    4. None of these systems had Office 2008 in the past.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Reboot both the Mac and the server. Word opens .DOC files and Excel opens .XLS files. As you have found out by copying the files to the computer. It is the connection between the 2 computer that is causing the error.

  • I can't open .doc downloads with MS Office. I click tools-options-applications and Word is not in the list of choices. I browse and double click MS Office to choose it only to get more subfolders. How do I choose Office?

When I receive a .doc (or .docx) to download from an email, open office or another similar application is chosen to open it instead of MS Office Word (have 2007 student). When I go to Tools>Options>Applications, Word does not appear on the list. When I use the Browse button, I cannot choose Word either. I double click on the MS Office folder only to get more subfolders.

  • How to open and read pdf and micrsoft word (.doc) files or documents

My problem is how to use my BB 9800 software version 6.0.0.546 to read/view pdf files and microsoft office documents. I have also bought documents to go from online and have installed it on my phone, but whenever i try to open it I receive a message that it is incompactible. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, Sammy.
Why not install a 3rd party PDF reader and Word Doc reader to help open and read pdf and micrsoft word (.doc) files or documents? You can google it and select one whose way of processing is simple and fast to help you with the related converting work.  It will be better if it is totally manual and can be customized by users according to our own favors. Remember to check its free trial package first if possible. I hope you success. Good luck.

  • Convert doc file generated by OpenOffice to PDF X1a

Hi, I have a .doc file originally produced by Open Office Writer and then converted to a Word format. I would now like to use Acrobat 10 to convert this .doc file to a PDF X format, but I'm not having any luck. I've tried the following two approaches:
    1. I'm able to use Open Office Writer to convert it to a normal PDF format. I then tried to take that PDF file and convert it to a PDF X file using Acrobat Pro with Preflight, but a bunch of errors appeared.
    2. If I start in Acrobat Pro, select Create PDF from file, select my documents, none of the .doc files produced in Open Office show up on the list--as if Acrobat Pro won't read any .doc files produced by Open Office.
Hope someone can help. I'm new to Acrobat Pro.
    Thanks in advance.

Use Ctrl-P or Use FILE>Print when you have OO Writer open with your document. You should get something like below.
Just select the Adobe PDF printer, check properties if you like, then print. In this case, OO shows a preview of the pages in the document as they should look. I created a simple one as an example. I did a preflight after using the PDF-X1A settings and did get errors noted. One of them had to do with tagging that does not happen when you use the print. You might try to print normally and then use preflight to convert. I tried also and still got errors. At least I may have given you some things to try.
