Dock connector USB cable

Went to the Apple store to get an extra usb-iPhone cable to charge my phone at work. This is what they sell:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA591G/A
I know Apple is proud of their stuff, $19.00 for this cable seems kind of expensive. I am looking around and I see a lot of less expensive cables out there. For example:
http://www.hdaccessory.com/servlet/Detail?no=199&sfs=42887cdd
this is $5. My question is, will this cable work? Or should I spend the money and get the Apple cable. I know, I know, I just spent a butt load of money for the iPhone and service, what's $19 more. Just wondering.
Thanks

So as long as it is a USB cable (and not a Firewire on the one end) it should work with a 3g iPhone. Right? The connector on the other end (the one the plugs into the phone) is the same for ipods, 1st gen iPhones, etc., correct?
Thanks

  • Can I connect an external dac to my ipod using a dock to usb cable?

I have an ipod Classic loaded with Apple Lossless copies of my cd collection. I connect the ipod to a Headroom Little headphone amp and drive a pair of Grado SR60s. I use a cable that goes from the dock connector to RCA stereo pair to avoid the volume pot in the 3.5 mini connector. Can I connect a DAC such as a Musical Fidelity V-DAC or a NuForce uDAC2 between the ipod and the amp to get an improved digital/analog conversion?

I also have a Classic 30GB. Got a new CD player with good DAC and usb port. But it says my ipod software isn't up to date. It is!
So to add to your question, how can I update my ipod so it will work with a 2011 DAC?

  • All audio works out of dock connector with Apple a/v cable, except for ipod audio.  I get no ipod audio.  Any ideas?

I have an iPhone 3gS (iOS 4.3.3) and an Apple AV cable.  This arrangement has worked in the past.  Now, I get NO iPod audio out of the dock connector/AV cable.  All other audio (movies/YouTube/etc.) works fine with the Apple AV cable...but, I get NO iPod audio.
Can anyone help me out with this issue?

I have tried videos from iTunes and my own conversions.
I managed to test my cables using a friends 30GB iPod and it worked just fine. I looked really good and I'm really looking forward to getting mine working.
It is definitely my iPod. Both the Apple AV Cable and the cheaper, longer Belkin AV iPod cable work fine with other iPods.
I will try firmware version 1.1.2 when I get home but I don't have high hopes. I will post the results for the silent masses yearning for an answer to the same problem.
Any tips on how to smoothly navigate Apple tech support and get my iPod fixed?

  • Old USB Cable (591-0222) With iPhone 3GS

    Hello,
I accidentally charged my iPhone 3GS with an old Apple USB cable (Model# 591-0222), rather than the new MA591G/A USB cable. I think the old Apple USB cable was from a 2nd Generation iPod.
It appeared to charge the phone fine. Just curious if I could have done any unseen damage to the battery.
    Thanks!

    No.
Apple recommends using the USB cable that shipped with your iPhone especially if there are any problems charging or syncing when using an older USB dock connector cable that shipped with an iPod, but you can use a USB dock connector type cable made for the iPod to charge or sync an iPhone without causing any damage.

  • IPad 1 dock connector seems to not work

    Hello everybody.
Yesterday, when I tried to recharge my iPad battery, I noticed that the device did not become aware of the fact it was connect to AC.
I used the original dock-to-usb cable connected to the original usb-to-plug adapter.
Ok, don't panic. I tried to connect my iPad to my PC. Same thing: the PC did not recognise the device and the device did not recognise the PC.
I tried turning the device into DFU mode: nothing.
Ok ok. In the meanwhile, the battery went to zero percent and the iPad turned off. I tried connecting the device to AC and, magically, the battery was charging! The device was in charging mode: black screen and red battery with the power sign below.
As soon as the device switched from charging mode to operative mode, the iPad stopped recognising the power.
I'm depressed. I think it's a software issue. I tried resetting my iPad using the proper function in the settings menu but it did not work.
I cannot restore it thru iTunes because the PC do not recognise the device.
    What should I do?
PS: The device mounts the original latest firmware and it's out of warranty. My PC runs Windows 7 x64.

I suspect it's a software issue because the problem only happens when the device is in the "operative" mode.
The charging thing works fine when the device is in "charging-only" mode.
However I'll take the device to an Apple retail shop.
How does the assistance work? Do they take 250 bucks for any kind of issue?

  • Will one day "ipod with dock connector" be able to be charged by USB cable?

    Hi,
this question has just popped into my mind
a moment ago. it might be very useful if
one day they'll grant us to be able to do that.
but if this request seemed to be too far
from hardware capability, i'd stop thinking
    about it.
could anyone give me a clue? any support teams?
    Thanks,
p/s hope i'd called my ipod right, it's the
one with four buttons outside the wheel, and
it is not a clickwheel one. "ipod with dock
connector" right? :] thank you again

    Hi Kenekeu
I just wanted to chime in and bump this thread. Although I've posted here several times about this exact problem, with no solution found yet, and no response from Apple. I tried rebooting into windows (via bootcamp) and reformatting my ipod from there. However when I downloaded the older version of the ipod updater, i was told that it was expired and a newer version was available (sigh). So I now have a windows formatted ipod that still won't connect via firewire.
I am still able to mount and transfer songs via USB in mac OSX. Luckily I had one of those dual usb/firewire cables, which plugs into the plug charger via firewire, and into the computer via USB at the same time, so my ipod doesn't lose charge.
Hopefully there'll be a fix soon, because this is really frustrating. I've had this ipod for a couple years, and was always proud that it lasted this long... and now this.

  • Apple Dock Connector to USB Cable PROBLEM

I had my iPhone plugged into my Mac book at the coffee shop this weekend using the dock connector to USB cable. After a while, I kept getting a message on my phone that said "This accessory is not compatible with your device. Would you like to turn on Airplane mode?"
I thought this was odd since the connector was an Apple product; I've never seen this message before, and I've had my iPhone plugged into my laptop several times before.
I didn't think anything of it, so I kept selecting 'No' after getting this message repeatedly. I had no reason to question the integrity of my iPhone or its accessories since I don't misuse or mistreat anything ever.
After a while, I looked down and noticed white smoke coming out of where the cable connects to the phone! I immediately unplugged everything and noticed the burnt and melted section of the connector part and in the phone itself. I left my phone unplugged until I could get to the Apple store.
I have to say, I believe these cables are not made very well. Luckily, the Apple store replaced my phone and my cable for free without any hassle. I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Is Apple doing anything about this?
    -Still an iPhone fan.

Doing anything about what ? Other people's faulty computers which go over voltage and fry iPhones ?
The initial message you got is indicative of a short circuited or dirty dock connector so it was probably dirt on the connector or iPhone which caused the problem. No they aren't likely to. I've never heard of this before but I am glad they replaced your iPhone so swiftly !

  • Dock connector to usb cable

Just wondering about the dock connector to usb cable that came with my new iPhone 4S:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA591G/B?fnode=MTY1NDAzOQ
I have an iPod 5th Generation (Video), part number MA147LLA which has a very similar connector. I'm wondering if the two are interchangeable. The white part of the iPod dock connector looks a little bigger than the one for the iPhone 4S but the actual connector itself still fits. I'd like to keep one in the car for when I need to do a charge when I'm away.
Anyone else using this same cable with both, their iPod and iPhone?

  • Nano + FW/USB dock connector cable ?

I have my 3G iPod dock that I connect using Apple's FW+USB cable:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71606/wo/O84Nz4a VKoBc3zmbmpbqLHKdgS8/1.0.15.1.0.6.25.7.11.0.3
(Gotta love those super-short Apple URLs.)
The cable's USB connector goes to my PC for data transfer and the FW connector goes to a power brick. I don't run my computer all the time, and this way the iPod gets juice even when my PC is off.
Is this FW/USB cable safe to use with my new iPod nano? The product page doesn't mention the nano, but that could be an oversight. I'd like to keep using the same cable to sync/charge both of my iPods.
    Thanks.

  • Male micro USB to female apple dock connector

Hey there does anybody know where I can get a male micro USB to female apple dock connector cable from?
    Many thanks

What I would do is use the male to male iPhone cable that came with it, attach a female to male micro usb adapto and a female dock connector coupler.

  • Apple dock connector female to male cable...do they make these?

i'm looking to run a female dock connector from my dock, to a male dock connector on the other end to my phone for use in my car, so i can get charge and line out to my phone and hide all the connectors except for the final male connector to my phone.
    like this:
    dock>>>female connector....(cable)...male connector>iphone
    hope this is clear.
does anyone make one of these?
    thanks
    carl

sik doesn't have one...i use the sik imp and that's what i need it for.
    as for this response:
"you can convert a usb cable back and forth... make your usb cable where you make the switch"
i have absolutely no idea what you are talking about but thanks for the response.

  • Can I connect iPod (with dock connector) with just a USB connector?

My mother-in-law gave my daughter her old iPod (with dock connector). It was supposed to come with an adapter that converts the 6-pin firewire cable to a USB cable (you are supposed to plug the 6-pin into the dock connector to charge it, then use the adapter to connect to your computer). We never got The adapter, so I just used USB connector from my own iPod nano to connect the old iPod into the computer. All kinds of error messages. I've now restored the iPod and it seems to be working, but I'm afraid to plug it back in using just the USB cable. Is it possible to connect the USB cable directly from the iPod to the computer without the adapter? Or could the problem be that I have also use my iPod nano on this computer? Thanks for any help you can provide.

A 15GB iPod would have to be a 3rd gen iPod.  It has a touch (not click) wheel with four touch buttons in a row that glow orange during use, correct?  That model needs to be connected using FireWire, because it cannot charge over USB.
If your new Mac has a Thunderbolt port, you can get an adapter for FireWire
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
plus an adapter for FireWire 800 to FireWire 400
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/FIR1369AD/
Another way, if you have the square white FireWire power adapter that came with your iPod, is to get a special docking cable that Apple used to sell a long time ago.  It has both USB and FireWire connectors.  Here's a listing for a third-party version on eBay
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Vanco-iPod-Dock-Connector-to-1-USB-1-FireWire-Cable-/2 71074766489?pt=US_MP3_Player_Chargers_Cradles&hash=item3f1d50ae99
(Search on "FireWire USB iPod docking cable" to see other listings.)
What you do with this thing is plug the USB connector to your Mac's USB port, the FireWire connector to the FireWire power adapter, and the dock connector to the iPod.  iPod can then sync over USB while getting power over FireWire.
I would go with that special cable, to avoid using a series of adapters (which adds complexity and unreliability) and tying up the valuable Thunderbolt port for just your iPod.

  • IPod USB 2.0 only ( with dock to USB/FW Cable ) question

    Hi
I at last want to buy me an iPod but ...
Since the iPods are USB 2.0 now & my Mac has USB 1.x & FW 400 , you understand for using the iPod as an external & preferred bootable HD I need a FW connection to the Mac ( for data transfer ) & if i read correct this splitter cable only uses the FW for loading the iPods Battery. If so this means i still need to connect via USB for music / data transfer & the bootable HD option ain't there .
I really want to clear this out cause if this info as i just provided it , this will make the iPod less interresting to me & iPod mini doesn't support a camera / mic connection which also makes that less interesting.
At the end if above info is correct i rather wait to buy an iPod together with a new Mac ( do new Mac's with usb 2.0 support bootinf from a usb 2.0 HD ??? )
Please answer this asap cause i need to tell the person what gift i want & god i want to tell him " Just get me that iPod " ( it's in the right pricerange )
    thx

Hello....I just purchased a brand new iPod 20gb color photo last night and I have a couple questions myself, relating to this topic.....
I have a first generation scroll wheel iPod that this is replacing but I still have all the accessories from the first generation iPod....do you know for certain if the charger from way back then will work with the brand new iPod....I know the actual firewire cable is different because of the dock connector but if I purchase one of the new firewire cable w/ dock connector can I use it with the old charger (brick)

  • USB Dock connector

    Hi,
I recently bought a new video ipod. I lost my dock connector used to upload the videos. so i bought a new charger which is of some other company, Now I am unable to load the videos into it. I can hear only the sound but unable to see the video. Does only the apple ipod usb cable works or any company's usb cable is fine. Please respond to my query.
    rajiv

"I can hear only the sound but unable to see the video."
On your iPod go to "Videos / Video Settings".
Then select "TV Out" and either set it to "off" or "ask".
Also, make sure you are accessing the video through the videos menu. If you have a video mixed in an audio playlist and you access it through that, you also won't be able to see the video.

  • USB connection kit with Charging Dock connector?

    Hey guys,
I am planning on buying the Apple USB dock connector in order to connect a midi device to my iPad to use with music apps. Im afraid of the battery dying as I'm recording and editing though and was wondering if anyone knew of a cable that also allowed me to plug the charging dock cable into my iPad at the same time as the USB?
A bit like a USB+DockConnector---> Dock connector cable?
    Thanks alot,
    Aaron.

Googling "Camera connection kit" or searching eBay for the same finds many third-party connectors that appear to do what you want, such as this, but I have no idea as to quality or functionality. At least they're cheap enough not to worry about wasting significant money finding out.
