Dock consumes 100% of CPU and fan runs. What to do?
I have a 2010 MBP with SSD and VMWare (not Parallels). Every so often, the dock cranks up to consume 100% of the CPU, and the fan runs. The problem goes away when I reboot. I've tried quiting various applications, but it doesn't seem to make a difference (i.e. I cannot identify a rogue app that's causing this). There are a lot of discussion threads on this problem with OS 10.6.8 and Parallels, but I'm running Lion 10.7.1 and VMWare (which I've shut down).
Any others have this issue? Ideas for solution?
Small update: Despite my intelligence, good looks and vast experience I use Google sometimes. To my surprise this file turns out to be a Windows one. Here is someone who is much happier, and since it is some way in my line of thinking I'll quote it, but you might take my previous advice as well:

Cpu and fans running at 100%
I've been working on this 20" iMac G5 for a couple weeks now and I'm stumped.
I've reset the smu, the nvram, wiped and put on a fresh install of 10.5, updated to 10.5.8 and still the computer is LOUD.
The fans run at a constant 100%, so I check the processor temp and it was 85c the instant the screen came on. So I proceeded to check the ventilation, took it all apart and all the air ways are clear, I checked, cleaned, and applied brand new thermal paste, put it all back together and still the instant the screen comes on the fans go to 100% and temp jumps to 85c
Then a student said "is it working hard?" Just to humor him I launched the activity monitor and to my surprise it was. The processor was running at 100% and the process that was doing it all is "top" running from the user 'root'.
I proceeded to type kill 321 (the pid) and the processor dropped to 10% and after about half an hour the temp was a normal 60c and the fans went quiet, but the instant I log out or reboot that 'top' process kicks back on and the machine starts over heating.
I've tried 10.4 and 10.5, wiped the HD about 5times and 'top' keeps running the processor off the deep end with every install.
I've tried permission repairs and hardware checks, even ran the full techtools deluxe scan.
I've tried finding others with this problem but it is understandably difficult to search for problems with 'top'.
It is no longer under warranty and no one is going to miss it if I just throw it out, but I don't want to give up on a 2.1Ghz machine for student use if that can be avoided.
I'm willing to try any ideas to get that process fixed, the only idea I have left is to replace the cmos battery, and prey to the computer gods, but I doubt that will do anything.Hey there - same problm here w/ white flatscreen G5 (PPC).
Did you have any luck in solving your problem?
Thx

Very high CPU and fans running fast in idle state on 2008 non-unibody Macbo
Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a 2008 MacBook with 2.4 GHz, 2GB RAM, and 160 GB hard drive off of craigslist. Now when I turn it on and leave it idle or even run any activity, the CPU skyrockets to around 66% and the fans are running very hot and fast. I checked activity monitor and nothing is running that indicates this high CPU. This MacBook does have AppleCare on it until August 2011 and I will probably bring it in to have it checked out but would like to know what you think.
Thanks!ok the abttery charges to 100% now so its alright but sometimes the charger turns to a dim green for some reason and doesnt stay bright only until I unplug and plug it back in again.
in regards to the random CPU spike, here is a screenshot of activity monitor, hopefully you guys can tell me what mds is..

DBSNMP consuming 100% of CPU
I'm currently in the process of implementing Grid in our environment. I've created the repository database, installed the OMS and have deployed agents. Everything appears to be functioning. However, I began to notice that DBSNMP would connect to the targets, issue a metrics-gathering query which would consume 100% of CPU, and retain that consumption until I killed it (in some cases over an entire weekend). I'm running the OMS and repository database on Solaris 10 while the agents are running on 5.9. The Oracle versions are 10.2.0.3.
Has anybody encountered this problem and if so, what did you do to solve it?
Much appreciated.I haven't seen this issue..looks like it's a big problem if it consumes 100% of CPU.
I'm just installing Grid Control on Solaris 10. I'm almost done with the 10.2.0.1 installation and i plan to upgrade GC to 10.2.0.3 next. You've had no problems upgrading, have you?
Did you install the patches they recommend? -
Itunes consumes 100% of CPU 15 seconds after startup
I was using iTunes 8, and experienced the following very annoying problem : 15 seconds after startup, the itunes application starts to consume 100% of CPU, and the application is not responding anymore. If I started to play a file within those 15 seconds, the file continues to play normally, but I cannot stop it anymore, and I cannot work on my PC (as 100% of CPU is taken by iTunes).
I tried to upgrade to iTunes 9.2, but the problem persists.
Any idea what can be the cause of this problem ? It prevents me to use iTunes on my PC.

Play (in shell) consumes 100% of CPU
If I execute in the shell:
# play myfile.mp3
it consumes 100% of CPU. However, playing music with mplayer or other players consumes only 3 or 4%.
My desktop is KDE4.4.
I don't have a need for it, but it looks like a bug.Try `strace`ing the running process. Any fd's can be looked up in /proc/$PID/fd

Will not boot up and fans run at high speed
will not boot up and fans run at high speed
after much head scratching I ran the hardware test disk from cd. The test showed a memory issue I eliminated the faulty one systematically. So it wasn't a hard drive or software problem in the end it was faulty memory. What was misleading was the computer telling me there was a fault on the hard drive. The machine works fine now. Thanks to people's comments I learned a bit more about the G5 that helped eliminate probable causes

Early 2008 MacBookPro keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed
Hi!
I wrote from Turkey.
My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.
What can i do right now? i'll wait for your advices
ThanksYour Mac may need a new PRAM battery. Once it is over 4 years old, that often is needed.

G5Imac had 3 tones and fan running at start up. Now it will start and the fan starts immediatly. Also had a few kernal panics prior. help!
Hi Miriam ,
Thanks so much for your info on my Imac. I took out the ram and reseated them. I had 256 on top and 512 on bottom,. I removed the completely and put them back in . The problem was sorta solved but now its doing the kernel panic thing again. And once I got a black screen that flashed something re; Darwin? Should I buy a 512 for the top slot? I heard that the top and bottom memory should match. Also thank you for the info on the extension program. It has already been in the shop for the power issue.

Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
☞ high ambient temperature
☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display. -
When I start up my 2010 Macbook Pro now, the fan starts running as soon as the spinning gear appears below the apple logo, the boot up is insanely slow, the mouse doesn't track well with my trackpad movements, and trying to open programs often leads to a non-responsive program with the pinwheel of death spinning for minutes at a time. I try to shut it down (takes approx. 20 min. now) and when the screen goes black, the fan continues full blast. After that I can boot up the computer and it runs normally, but the whole process takes about 50 minutes longer than it should, especially with a relatively new SSD (~ 8 months old). Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone know how to fix it?
It loads well enough in safe boot, and I've tried cutting out most of the apps that launch at startup with poor results. I've also tried resetting the SMC with equally poor results. I need help!
Here's my Etresoft report as well.

10.6.8 another problem dock takes 100% of cpu
I discovered 10.6.8 broke the printing on my Epson RX650 multifunction printer. There are work arounds to deal with that I understand.
Now I find in Activity Monitor that the dock is consuming 100% of one CPU. I can force it to quit, it comes back after a short while at around 14% CPU then shoots up to 100% again. In the floating CPU window of Activity Monitor I see one core is fully utilised. I get Dock to quit and it will come back and hog another core.
Any suggestions?Problem sorted. Saw another discussion that found Parallels as the culprit. Also saw that an update is available from Parallels that fixes the bug.

Clouds process consuming 100% of cpu
Whenever MBP is not able to connect to internet, the cloudd process consumes 100% cpu.
This is draining the battery in a very short time.
Internet connectivity, either lack there of or because of corp. firewall rules send this process into 100% consumption.
Only work around is to disable all items in iCloud control panel, which is painful for access and re-sync.
RobertDoes the it eventually recover on it's own? It's possible that the JVM is doing full garbage collection. How big is your max heap size? I suggest to add some garbage collection debugging in the JVM_OPTS to see if it is Java's garbage collection or not. Might as well check the heap too, to see if it's running our of memory.
Example;
-verbose:gc -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintTenuringDistribution -Xloggc:/tmp/gc.log -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError -XX:HeapDumpPath=/tmp
