Dock covers desktop files - How to stop?

My dock is almost as wide as my screen. The problem I have is that the desktop files that are "locked" into position by Clean Up at the bottom of the screen are partway hidden by the dock. The same thing happens when I save something to the desktop and it ends up at the bottom of a column of files. Is there any way to set it so that the Clean Up/Save functions don't put files at the bottom like that?

If you really need to file things on the Desktop, you probably should use Automatically Show and Hide the Dock.

Bad migration up from Snow on a MacPro to Maverick on a Mini so am trying to revert back to Snow on my MacBook Pro.  Along the way, Maverick created a second file called Desktop (original) which I'm stuck with back in Snow on the MacBook Pro.  The regular Desktop file is emply and I'd Like to repopulate it with the contents from the Desktop (original) file, then discard that file.
Also, when I got done with the mess, I've been shorted in the MacBook Pro Snow my email files for the years 2011-2014.  I can locate them in Maverick but getting them out has been been tough. HOWEVER, I still have those same files on my older MacPro Snow comupter and need to know the best way to transfer them from the Old Snow Pro computer to my newer Snow BookPro computer.  Hookups and additional hard disks to assist aren't a problem it's just the formatting that has to be done to keep all smooth.  In other words, I think I have the hardware covered, it's just the software movements I'm concerned about. Thanks.   Baronial

You can reset the action Firefox is set to use for certain file types - we have 2 KB articles explaining how to reset these settings:

  • Desktop clutter: How to stop opened attachments from saving on desktop?

    Hi,
Every time I open (not save) an attachment, a copy of it is automatically saved on my desktop. My desktop continually gets cluttered. I've searched on my computer but can't find where I'd go to change the default settings so this will stop happening.
    Thanks for any help!

Are you referring to attachments in email, or
    attachments as part of web
pages (such as download are sometimes erroneously
    referred) or in what
application are you interested in controlling this
    action?
The Finder preferences generally do not blanket
    control these kinds of
actions; so if you are using an email application or
    a browser with email
handling capabilities, these usually have a set of
    preferences you can
control and choose what it does with files downloaded
    or attachments.
Some attachments can be set to open in another
    window. In some
applications, you could assign a folder once and have
    things go into it.
What applications are you using that generate these
    attachment files?
Thanks. I am referring to email attachments. I always use Mozilla Firefox to open up email attachments. In Firefox Preferences under the download tab you can choose either "Ask me where to save every file" or "Save all files to this folder." I've set it to "Ask me where to save every file" of course yet this is still saving to my desktop. Further, I don't even want to save the files, the files always save to my desktop when I just try to open, not even save, an attachment.
    Thanks for your help.

  • HMI FILES - HOW TO STOP THEM SHOWING ON EXT HARD DRIVE?

Hi - this was posted on the Nov 8, 2012 2:16 PM and it's still hapening any suggestions
Hi there I'm not sure where to post this one:
I have an external Toshiba Hard Drive that I use to copy film over from my Mac. I sometimes pug it into my Humax PVR and most of the files play What I don't understand is when I watch them via the Humax it creates a 'HMI flle'.  I can see this file sowing up when I connect the drive to my Mac.
Is there a way to prevent this? No biggie, just like to keep this in order.  I'm assumingthe drive is formatted correctly?? MS-DOS (FAT32)
I can't reformat the drive now if it isn't as there are too many files but it would be handy to know for future reference.
    Cheers.

Thank you so much BDAqua. I turn the Time machine off now.
About the format type, Macbook automatically did it. I guess format type is Mac OS Extended. I tried to connect this external HD to Windows PC but the PC cannot recognize it. So, I cannot recover from PC where I have recovery software. Do you have any idea how to let PC recognize this external HD?
I try to find the way but it seems I have to reconnect the HD back to Mac and try to recover on Mac. Is that only way? Do you have any suggestion? Thanks again.

  • An index of my desktop files appears in firefox. why is it there? does this mean my personal files are accessible from the internet? how can i make sure this goes away and stops?

i am seeing and index of my personal files on firefox. what is this? why is it there? how can i make it go away? does this mean my desktop files are on the internet? can someone explain clearly and simply (i am not tech saavy at all) thank you

This issue can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.
Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.
You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.
There have also been fonts with a Chinese name reported that identify themselves as Helvetica, so check that as well.
Use this test to see if the Helvetica font is causing it (Copy & Paste the code in the location bar and press Enter):
    <pre><nowiki>data:text/html,
    Helvetica<br><font face="Helvetica" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font><br>
    Helvetica Neue<br><font face="Helvetica Neue" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font>
    </nowiki></pre>
You should reset the network.http prefs that show user set on the about:config page.<br />
Not all websites support http pipelining and if they do not then you can have issues with images or other problems.

In Finder, select the item. Choose File > Get Info (or do ⌘I). Look under General > Kind. Does it read "Alias" or does it read "Application (Intel)"?
If the latter, then it is likely that you're not allowed to delete because it's actually open. Quit Safari. Check if there is an item called Safari in your </Applications> folder. (In Finder, you can get directly to the Applications folder using ⇧⌘A -- that's Shift-Command-A.) Check if it's an application. If it is, then you have an unneeded copy of Safari. You can delete the one on your Desktop. If there isn't, them move the one on the Desktop to the Applications folder -- that's where it belongs.

  • New Desktop files hidden under Dock

I recently upgraded to Tiger. Since then, new files on the desktop (copied from elsewhere or downloaded from internet) frequently land underneath the dock (at the bottom of the screen). Every time this happens I have to 1) move the dock, 2) move the file icon, 3) replace the Dock.
    Very annoying!
The folks at the local Apple Store have no answer except to avoid putting files on the desktop, which is not a very satisfying answer. is this actually how it's supposed to work in Tiger?
    Thanks!
Ps. tiger was first installed with archiving (something like that). Then reinstalled to clean hard drive after I reported all the problems I was having (including this one). Apple store genius bar did both installs.

"Are the items forced to go there because all the other space is taken up?"
Well, yes and no. It seems to like columns, and some columns are full. But there is room for more columns. I've tried various viewing options.
My dock is too big to see a file over the top of it. I'd like to keep it that size.
The other suggestion they gave me was to "hide" the dock. I'm trying that now, but I don't like it much. It's too slow to bring it up again. That is, I move my mouse to the bottom and have to wait for it to respond (I'm an impatient kind of guy).
Yes, I heard about the performance hit. I'll take steps to minimize my file/folder count on the desktop.
    ..... Never mind...
I just found the answer, although it still seems like the desktop should be smart enough to not put files under the doc:
I had the desktop view option set to "keep arranged by..." As soon as I turned that off, the files will now go anywhere(?). At least not under the dock.
Thanks for your help. I just got rid of most of my desktop files and folders, too.

  • How to recover missing desktop files?

While in Adobe Bridge, my friend accidently dragged his User folder to the Shared User folder (the graphics pen sorta grabbed it withouthim noticing). He tried to drag it back out of Shared, but it said it couldn't be modified. So he rebooted, and it started up with his own user being as if new, with none of his files or prefs. So then he tried dragging his desktop, docs folders, etc back from Shared to where they belonged in his user. That worked for everything except the Desktop. When he tried to copy that,it asked if he wanted to replace the existing (blank) desktop with the one from the shared folder, which showed all his desktop files. But when he okayed it, the resulting desktop was blank. He doesn't know if he accidently overwrote in the wrong direction (he doesn't think so), or if something else happened. He's a photographer and had hundreds of edited image files in folders on the desktop- so all his recent work since a back up a few weeks ago is gone. Spotlight cannot find any of them by name, nor any other desktop files but the new blank one. so the files are at least not visible, if not gone. Here's the thing: if you run Terminal and look at the desktop file, it shows 2,064 items... which might be his files (?). But i have no idea how to get at them. Nothing shows in the Desktop trash hidden file. Is there anything short of expensive recovery software that might find these files, which are probably not overwritten yet? (he's being careful not to use the drive so that they don't get overwritten)

Trying to diagnose something like this third hand probably isn't very effective. But when you open Terminal you are "in" your home directory. If you then issue this command:
    cd Desktop
and hit return you will then be "in" your Desktop folder. If you then issue the list command:
    ls -al
you will get a list of all the files and folders that are in the Desktop folder. If he sees everything, then the stuff is there. He could try creating a new folder in his home folder, call it something like fromDesktop, and then issue this command (this assumes he is still "in" the Desktop folder):
    mv * ~/fromDesktop
This will move everything from the Desktop folder into the fromDesktop folder. A list command will verify things:
    ls -al ~/fromDesktop
If all his stuff is listed, but he still can't see it in its new location using the Finder, then it could be that somehow the invisible bit got set.
And for Finder's sake, tell him to stop saving all that stuff to the Desktop! Put stuff in folders in his home folder. I've seen cases where excessive numbers of files dropped on the Desktop brought the Finder to its knees for many hours. Every single thing on the Desktop is treated as a window by the Finder, and having a ton of stuff there is needlessly slowing things down. And he should be backing up every night, not every couple of weeks. There are many programs available that will do this automatically. If he is in business he should be using one. Not to mention burning separate CDs of things for every client.

Memory Dumps are generated automatically by the SQL Server under various circumstances - most of which indicate potential problems in the Instance or the machine. Some that I can recall right now are:
    Database Corruption
    Non-yielding scheduler
    Non-yielding resource monitor
    AV (Access Violation)
There can be several other reasons as well. SQL Server generates the dumps, so that these dumps can be analyzed to find out potential problems in the SQL Server.
IMHO, rather than trying to find out ways to stop the dumps from being generated, please try to find out potential problems in the Instance or the machine and fix that. This will stop the dump generation anyway.
In case you need any assistance in analyzing the Dumps, please feel free to engage Microsoft Support.

  • How to stop Time Machine from backing up Temp Files?

    Hi folks!
I am trying to find out how to stop Time Machine from constantly backing up 'useless' temporary files accumulated from web browsing? Although I don't change or add large files to my HD, Time Machine backs up hundreds of MBs every hour. Those file amounts make sense when I consider that I browse a lot to YouTube, SoundCloud, etc to watch videos or listen to music - I just don't want them to be backed up.
Under Time Machine Options I already excluded the following items from backups:
    ~/Library/Caches
    /Library/Caches
    ~/Downloads
But even though I did this weeks ago, Time Machine stills finds large files to be backed up every hour and my only guess is that I am still missing a location where either Safari or Firefox - the two web browsers I use - store temporary files.
    Can you help?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Are you sure you need that? There are no viruses that run on OSX. None. Zip. Zero.
If you're running Windoze on your Mac, that's the same as running it on a PC, so it needs all the same anti-everything stuff you'd use on a PC.
There is some "malware," such as Trojans, for Macs, though. But (unlike viruses that can get onto your system without your knowledge), you must approve their installation (via your Admin password) and/or operation (via the "This application was downloaded from the internet ..." prompt).
Appropriately enough, some of these Trojans are included in pirated versions of Apple software, such as iWork!
