Dock Display resets itself; Overheating; Loosing Bookmarks w/ Firefox

Hello,
I need help and was wondering if anybody might have an idea of what is going on with my iBook which is 2 years old. Up until a week ago I had no problems whatsoever with the laptop and all of a sudden things seem very strange...
1) I am loosing battery power very quickly. The charge holds, if I am not using the internet, about 1 hour.
2) I lost all my bookmarks in firefox for no reason. I started saving bookmarks again but the next day, they were gone again.
3) The Dock is resetting itself to the original view every time I start up the laptop. I save icons in the dock but they disappear the next time I turn the laptop on. What I find interesting though is that the wallpaper stays the same. Do the dock settings and the wallpaper have different memory?
4) The laptop is overheating and the fan is blowing almost constantly even though I am using the laptop on a table (hard surface; yes, I read the posts).
I spoke to Tech Support and they had me take out the battery and press the "power on" button for 6 seconds (sorry, I forgot the term that they used for this process). It seemed to help while the Tech was on the phone but the next day, I had the same problem.
Can it be that I need a new battery or does anybody think there might be more wrong with it?
Thank you to all who respond.

Glad the genius bar was able to help you!
Would agree with the erase and install once you get your important data backed up. It will get rid of any corrupted software and cobwebs and make your machine seem like new again. This would be a good opportunity to gain a little hard drive space by doing a custom install and opting to not install all the languages and printer drivers you will never use.
It would not surprise me if your overheating problem might get better or even go away after an erase and install. I don't know which model iBook you have, and I understand that some of them do run hot, but it has been my experience that my iBook usually runs cool and the fan very seldom comes on.
When I mentioned Activity Monitor, I was wondering if you might have had a runaway application going on in the background. One time I was just doing email and the computer got hot and the fan came on--and the CPU showed 85% use, which was way more than my usual few percent. In view of your battery problems and overheating, I wondered if you might have had the same sort of thing going on. Here is the article about this:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime:

Most people don't need File Vault. If you do have a few sensitive documents on your laptop that you want to be secured in case it ever gets stolen, you can use an encrypted disk image instead. Just go to Disk Utility and click on "New Image". It will create a file that you can protect with a good password. For most users, File Vault is more trouble than it's worth.
I think once you do the erase and install, everything will be working as it should again.
Good luck, and thanks for the star!

  • Help Dock keeps reseting

So I'm somewhat new to osx (1month) and so far I really do love my 13 mbp, but I'm having one little annoying recurring problem. The dock seems to reset every time I log off. For example, I used google chrome as my default web browser at first to somewhat ease my way into macintosh. So of course I placed Chrome in the Dock. Since then I'v began to use Safari and removed chrome from the dock and replaced it with safari. Now heres the problem, every time I log back in my profile. my dock resets to display google chrome and anything I add to the dock is removed once I log off. It seems the dock is reseting itself to what I had 2 weeks prior. At first I didnt mind it but its slowly getting more and more frustrating.
I would greatly appreciate any help and thank you.

OK, I will offer one more post on this problem. And no one questions your knowledge about computers, it's just that you are an Apple novice. As we all were at one time. Different platforms do things differently
Go back to the advice that Baltwo gave you. Although you think you followed his advice, I don't think you actually did. He told you to remove the two Dock Preference files from your Users Library, place them on the Desktop, then Log Out and Log Back In. You said you only found one Dock Preference file, not two. And it didn't help.
At this point we don't know if it will help because you entered the wrong Library. You entered the System Library and you want the Library for your home folder. Open a Finder window and set it to the Column View. Click on your Home Folder (the little House thingy) in the sidebar. Then click on Library and then Preferences. Scroll down to the 2 com.apple.dock plists and follow Baltwo's instructions. When you remove a plist from the library, the next login causes a new, pristine version of the plist to be created.
Who knows whether it will help, but this is basic level troubleshooting. You may want to look up "Creating a new user account" in Apple Help. That's another basic troubleshooting tool.
Good luck with OSX. Once the kinks are worked out you're gonna love it.

  • Mac OS 10.4 reset itself

    Hi,
I was using my PowerBook G4 today like I always do. I was downloading some new icons from the apple website and I was writing a paper for school. I was pasting some of these new icons onto folders, when my customize buttons on the Finder dissappeared. I thought the computer was just having a small problem, so I restarted it.
When I did that, the entire OS was changed. The dock was reset back to factory settings (except instead of the icons appearing, they were question marks). My iTunes library was erased, as was my iPhoto library (and all of my other applications were reset). My edits to the Finder (such as backgrounds) were set back to white, and edits inside of applications were undone (for instance, my bookmarks in Safari were reset back to factory settings).
What happened? And is there a way to recover the settings I had put into the computer? It didn't delete my MS Word and Excel files, but it seems to have deleted or reset everything else. I have had no problems with my computer before. Nothing like this has ever happened to it before. Thanks for your help in advance.
    PowerBook G4 12.1 1.5 GHz 512 MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Update:
After digging around more, I've found most of my files. My iTunes music is all there for instance. However, I have to reimport the files into iTunes to get them to play.
So, my question is now... what happened? Why did my computer reset itself, but not delete my files? And how do I keep this from happening again in the future?

  • 60G iPod 'Resets' itself sporadically... What's Up with that?

I have a 60G iPod that has about 2800 songs loaded (+ about a dozen jpg images). Loaded from a WIN2K based PC using iTunes 6.0.4.2 and the latest iPod Update software.
When playing, the unit will sporadically 'Reset' itself (Run through shutdown/startup while displaying the Apple Logo) with no button pushes or any other contact. It's to the point now where it is never a matter of "IF" it will do it, simply a matter of "WHEN" or "HOW SOON" it will occur... very, very frustrating!!! Sometimes I can run about 30-45 minutes before it happens, sometimes it happens on the second or third song (5 or 10 minutes).
I have Reset the iPod, Upgraded the iPod to the latest OS, Reinstalled OS and consistently upgraded to the newest iTunes version, and Restored the iPod to factory level Zero and then reloaded all 2700+ songs and 13 photos... no changes... still dumps whenever it decides to.
Oh yeah... it sits in a BOSE dock, charging every night so the power should be adequate.
Any ideas or insights from ANYONE? Thanks in Advance for your reply/response!!!
I'm getting exceedingly frustrated, especially when I see my wife's 30G operate absolutely fine. Don't know if song count makes any difference but she doesn't has barely begun to load any real quantity of material yet...
    iPod v5 60G   Windows 2000

Here is my 'tech/test report' for the day:
I plugged in the iPod to my work computer, same as yesterday. No songs in library, etc, etc.
Using the iPod as the song file source, and playing the songs using iTunes as the controlling interface, this thing played all day, hour after hour, with no resets, no issues of any type.
After ejecting the iPod and playing it on the way home, I was able to get approximately one (1) hour of play time before the iPod went into the 'AUTO-RESET' mode, by rebooting itself with no contact.
I believe we state with a high level of assurance the issue is neither MECHANICAL (i.e. a bad or tempermental hard-drive) or due to bad files. The iPod did what it was supposed to do for hours when using an external (i.e. Workstation) user interface (iTunes). Although possible, I still doubt the RESET issue stems from a battery/power triggered event.
I tend to believe the issue lies somewhere within the UI or OS on the unit itself. Perhaps some memory cache that fails to clear and eventually fills and forces a reset?
    Still searching for THE solution...
Ps: I WILL NOT BE UPGRADING TO 1.1.1 ... those issues look REALLY UGLY!!! Atleast I still get to listen to SOME songs before it bites the dust!

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500A Periodically resets itself

About every 20 minutes the screen on my HP Officejet Pro 8500A goes blank, then redisplays, followed by the carriage shifting sounding like the printer is resetting itself to print a job.  I'm set up on a WiFi connection and have no screen blanking set.  This resetting is VERY disconcerting as it happens with no warning.  How can I stop this periodic reset?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi HevnLgh,
I completed all of the steps you recommended and they did not solve the problem.  However two days later the problem has disappeared.
The problem was not that the printer was powering off.  Also it was not connected to a computer in any manner other than WiFi, though it did have a phone line connection to send/receive FAXes.  The printer display was blanking for a few seconds, followed by redisplay and carriage movement that sounded just like when it was getting ready to print.  However no printout resulted, nor was there any print job pending.
Now the display goes dim periodically for a few seconds, but comes back on.  However there is no longer any carriage movement or other noises.  Since the sudden noise was always the annoying factor I'm satisfied that the issue is resolved.

  • My iBook is reseting itself

I started up my iBook G4 one morning and my documents and programs were still there, but none of my settings were there and my programs had been reseted, I lost all my iPhoto pictures, iTunes stuff, aim settings, etc. Then even hour or so, safari resets itself again, and I lose my bookmarks and everything. What do I do?

Your short name is the same name as the folder with the house icon by default. If you're unsure which of the other home folders was originally yours, look for folders which have the standard folder icon but don't have a red circle in the lower right. If you find one named Shared, it's not your original home folder, but is intended for files which need to be available to all user accounts. Look in any other folder matching the criteria for your user data.

  • I downloaded an add-on to have firefox reset itself everytime I close/reopen. Now I want to remove it. It's not listed as an add-on. How can I get rid of it?

I downloaded an add-on to have firefox reset itself every time I close and reopen it. Now I want to remove it, but it's not showing as an add-on. How can I get rid of it?

You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure that nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.
Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
*Download the full Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop<br>http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

    G4 Powerbook 1.5   Mac OS X (10.4.1)   Upgraded from 10.3.4

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Since you don't have a backup, my first suggestion is to get an external Firewire hard drive and Prosoft Data Rescue.
It may be able to recover the information.
If you think you might have moved the User folder, or one of its subfolders by mistake, or named it something different, there is this article which can help:

Though if your Applications are gone, I'm not sure that it will. Still take a look and see if that's what your issue is.

  • OS X 10.4 reset itself

Upon switching my G5 (mac OS X 10.4) on last night I discovered that all my preferences had been reset to default settings. For example, my desktop files where misplaced, desktop image changed, dock programs reset, firefox settings and bookmarks reset etc, photshop setting shortcuts etc cleared. Luckily all files were intact
I have not logged in or out of the user account or changed any settings/preferences in my last session. Nor has any one else used the computer. I’m at a loss as do why this has happenedI have asked this question to frineds and also posted to another forum without an answer, it's a mystery I'd like to solve.
    Imac G5 Mac OS X (10.4)
    Imac G5 Mac OS X (10.4)

I entered 'preferences' in the finder window and it listed a few different preference folders. One of the was last accessed the day the problem started so i figured that would maybe be the missing preferences. Strangely though it listed the folders location in library>preferences but when I actually went there the file wasn't there. So I just copied the one I found and pasted it into my preferences restarted the computer and all my setting were back. My firefoxes book marks didn't seem to returns but my photoshop actions were back.
Still don't know how this happened, and I doubt it was from me accidentally doing it.

  • Iphone 4S Resetting itself?

Two nights ago my iphone reset itself. I didn't lose anything, but it reset everything back to factory settings. My volume was reset, siri, as well as getting popups on how to use certain things on an iphone. It was like pulling it out of the box. Is there a virius or should I reset it back to factory settings then re-add everything? This is the first it's ever happened.

    Hello Duckweed,
The resource below will explain what to do if your iPhone keeps restarting.  Was your iPhone set to automatically sync with iCloud? If so, you may have a fairly recent backup to fall back on if a restore is needed.
If your iOS device restarts, displays the Apple logo, or powers off while you're using it - Apple Support

  • Mail Reset itself and delete signatures etc

    Hi
I am using ML. The mail is playing with me... this is flustrating now...
    It resets itself somehow...
My mails OK, everything works. But everytime I made signatures they will be dissapear soon.
Also the order of the accounts that I made in the left panel will be resets alphabetical order...
I don't know why these thing happens and even when they happenes. It's not after restart or something. Even if I don't swich off the macbook this is happening.
If someone has same problem and know the solution now please let me know.
Or let me know if it is a BUG or something and I/we need to wait for a upgrade from apple.
Too much problem is coming up newadays from Apple. I don't expect these from Apple.
    Thank you so much.

    Hi Mike,
Are your other APPs there, and your Dock the same?
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • 8GB nano resetting itself continually - unable to stop it

Woke up this morning to find my two-week old nano continually resetting itself in its dock. It's now completely unusable - it resets, comes back, 5-10 seconds later it resets again. I've tried everything to stop it from doing this but nothing works. Cannot do a 'restore' as the nano resets itself before the process completes. Cannot even switch the nano off, so now it's just sitting on my desk resetting itself over and over and over again... which it will presumably do for the next 24 hours or so until the battery wears out.
Any ideas on how to stop it, or has my nano bit the dust..? Worked flawlessly for the past two weeks or so (apart from certain playlists not syncing, covered elsewhere...).

Honestly it sounds like a short within the ipod to me. From everything I've read, it seems that the entire charging system for the Ipod is extremely ahh, "delicate" I guess is the word.
The circuitry protection for power spikes and brownouts seems to be non-existent in the Ipod, and the power grid itself seems to be extremely delicate.

  • . If I reset my computer thereby wipeing out firefox brower and then reinstall it later, will firtefox remember my bookmarks? I really do not want to loss my bookmarks. Thanksn

will firefox remember my bookmarks after i reset my computer to original factory settings, then reinstall firfox again?

Whatever you are doing I recommend you manually back up your bookmarks. It may then make sense to keep such bookmarks on removable media, or maybe somewhere else: another computer, or even as an attachment to an email.
    * see [[Backing up and restoring bookmarks]]
Trying to answer your question <br>that possibly depends on what you have in mind when saying <br> ''"If I reset my computer thereby wipeing out firefox brower and then reinstall it later"''
If you restore the computer to the state it was in when bought, you will loose your bookmarks; and I imagine an awful lot of other things will also disappear; whilst all sorts of annoying freebies will probably come back.
If you ordinarily '''reinstall''' Firefox, but do NOT use the delete personal settings (or however it is worded) option, then Firefox will attempt to retain your bookmarks

  • Help why can i not use my ipad since it reset itself

hi my ipad 2 just reset itself when i restated it and put id etc in all i get is cannot connect to sever why is this ????

I'm not sure what you mean by the statement that the iPad reset itself when you restarted it.  Do you mean you had to restore it and start all over again with device activation? You said that you put in ID etc, and that really doesn't tell us that much. Now all you get is can't connect to server. I assume that you mean in Safari. If that's what you mean, clear Safari, close all of the apps on your iPad, and reset the iPad.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website Data
Now close all apps. In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
