Dock fails to start at login/start

Since yesterday when logging out/in or restarting my macBook Pro, OS X 10.6.4 the Dock fails tot start. I get an blue desktop and no Dock, everything else works. I can start the dock manualy from the Core Services folder, it runs correctly then and with the correct dektop picture. But for some reason it does not start of its own. For now I've added the Dock to lg-in items but I want to solve the problem the correct way. Any ideas...? Thanks!

Hi macjack, yes I deleted all those prefrences. It seems however some 'list' of what should auto-start on log-in is somehow also deleted/damaged. Which plist/preference could that be...?
I don't know. If it is a .plist you might drag your preferences out of your prefs folder to a desktop folder, log out and back in to see if Docks works correctly. Then load your prefs back a group at a time and logging out/in to check.
Note: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist *This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences. Since we know it's not your problem you should keep that one.
You might also want to see what happens when you startup Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)

    If at any time you got a functioning system, take this opportunity to backup your files to a external drive (not TimeMachine) via drag and drop methods.
    It might be a more serious problem, like a failing hard drive.
    Look into the free Carbon Copy Cloner as a hold option bootable external drive clone, it helps in problems like this as you can boot the computer from the external drive and repair or recover your latest files and even reverse clone.

    This problem connected with proxy-setings.
    As the first steps you should try:
           1.  export system env variable:
    http_proxy=http://www-proxy.ru.oracle.com:80
    https_proxy=https://www-proxy.ru.oracle.com:80
    no_proxy=127.0.0.1,localhost
    and you can also export
        export OS_TENANT_NAME=admin
        export OS_USERNAME=admin
        export OS_PASSWORD=root
        export OS_AUTH_URL=http://<conntroller_IP>:5000/v2.0/
    2. and than restart mysqld, if it is running, stop iptables and repeat installation process from beginning with the currently generated answer file
    if we are exporting variable OS_PASSWORD, its value should be the same as value for CONFIG_KEYSTONE_ADMIN_PW in the currently generated answer file.
    This OS_PASSWORD will be written by packstack in the /root/keystonerc_admin file and will be used as admin's password for login to  Openstack dashboard.

  • [SOLVED] PulseAudio does not start at login

    I am not sure what happened to my config, but pulseaudio no longer starts at login under Gnome.  Attempting to start from a terminal using
    $ pulseaudio --start
    fails with:
    N: [pulseaudio] main.c: User-configured server at localhost, refusing to start/autospawn.
    I followed the instructions on the PulseAudio ArchWiki page under "Daemon startup failed" without success.  Interestingly, pulseaudio will work with
    $ pulseaudio -D
    I pasted the output from
    $ pulseaudio -vvvv
    here -> http://pastebin.com/zJYvY1FS
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Just recalled that I had recently set PULSE_SERVER = localhost in /etc/environment. Removed that and everything is working again.

  • Address Book entries disappear & apps not starting at login when set.

    On Friday, I created an address group for a class I'm teaching. After I finished creating the group, I left Address Book. Later, I was sending out email messages and email had lost its ability to complete the email addresses of people I correspond with, regularly. When it did this for several people, I went into Address Book and discovered that only the information for the new address group I created was in my Address Book. Furthermore, iChat, Calendar, and Mail are not starting when I login, as they are set to do. I rebooted my machine and they still didn't start. I disbled and re-enabled "start at login". That also didn't work. I disabled it, rebooted, logged in and re-enabled it, then rebooted again and that also didn't fix my problem. That these three programs are affected because all three of them read the Address Book data.
    Has anyone else experience this problem and how did your fix it.

  • Prevent iChat from starting at login

    How do I prevent iChat from starting at login? I looked in my account login items and it is not listed there. I shut the app completely before shutting down the computer so it shouldn't be automatically be relauncing due to the "reopen windows" setting in Lion. Just can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    With iChat Open check the Window Menu about which windows are actually open
    The App should be Quit at the end rather than hitting the red blobs on the windows (this only closes/Hides the windows and does not Quit the app)
    Are you getting Off Line IMs when it starts up ?
    If this is the case it is a "feature" rather than a fault although you don't have a lot of control over it.
    In earlier versions the support app iChatAgent  "Listens" to the AIM Server in particular and will answer if an Off Line IM is sent.
    If iChat is closed down iChatAgent will launch it.
    In iChat 6 this is done by IMAgent (it does the same job for FaceTime if it's preferences are set to ON but the app is not launched)
    Most likely it is a window that belongs to iChat that is not getting closed.
    At the same time it may not be in view  (the Window Menu should give clues).
    It could be Off Line IMs

  • Launchd applications not automatically starting at login

    In the last couple of months I've noticed strange behaviour during startup/login wherein certain applications aren't automatically starting.
    In particular:
    - Evernote Helper
    - Mint QuickView
    - Growl
    - Possibly more, 1Password Helper maybe? Not sure
    Each of these programs has a setting within them or their main application counterparts to start automatically at login. Whether this setting is on or not, the programs don't trigger.
    So far I've tried:
    - uninstalling, clearing out application files with Hazel, reinstalling
    - verifying the "Start at Login" settings in the plist preference files
    - looking at the launchd files for these program entries (present in the override files)
    - using Cocktail to repair/re-create the launchd files
    Has anyone else experienced this? The work-around is to start these programs manually after login or in only some cases, add the program to the login items.
    Thanks

    Things Helper is another program that's not starting at login. Oddly, Mint QuickView started for over a week straight, but no longer apparently. I haven't touched any settings or done anything seemingly related.

  • Apps starting at login always start offline?

    Hi there,
    I have a couple of apps that are starting at login. Although every time I start my Mac, the apps start, they always display a notification that there is no internet connectivity.
    Is there any way to make the apps start only when there is internet connectivity? Otherwise, I'll need to close a bunch of popups before I can start using my apps.
    Thanks

    You could try a workaround…
    Open Automator.
    Create a new 'Application'
    Search for the 'Pause' action in the library of actions, and drag it to the workflow area on the right.
    Set the value to 20 seconds or so
    Search again for the 'Launch Application' action.
    Select the desired app & repeat for every one you want open.
    Save this Application (maybe in your home folder/Applications).
    It should look like…
    Open System Preferences > Users & groups, select your account, edit the login items & delete the old applications. Add the new Application and see if it works.
    You will need to disable the option to 'Reopen windows on next login' when you logout (or quit these apps before logout).

  • Shut Down/Start Up/ Login Slow

    Hi Folks,
    Over the weekend I installed Leopard. My performance seems to be taking a hit.
    It takes over a minute to shutdown, over a minute to start up, and almost a minute to login in.
    What gives? My "Guest" account takes 10 seconds to shut down and is much faster starting up and logging in.
    I've been through the wringer with Tech Support to no avail.
    HELP!
    Thanks.

    i had slow logins as well on my macbook. first i disabled all "start at login" items in the accounts preference menu. logged out and back in and it was really fast. so then i started enabling the items i had before one at a time. logging out and back in until i found out if one or more items were causing the slow login times.
    for my machine it ended up being "Growl" that was causing the slow login. so i just left that unchecked from within the Growl preference pane. now everything is great. the odd thing is that Growl is still loading at login because it works without me having to start it manually. but i don't have it checked in the preference pane or in the list of start up items in accounts.
    hope this helps! happy thanksgiving.

  • "Starting Window Login" PLEASE help

    I have a blue G3 running Panther. I've had it for about two years (bought it from a friend, so I have no disks) and a couple of months ago I tried to start it up. However, it stops loading right before the login screen. It says "Starting Window Login" and never takes me to the login screen.
    I have no disks for this computer. I really need these files. Is there any way I can get to them?
    I have a Mac Mini with the Tiger disks, but I have no idea where to go from here.
    I bought an external HD enclosure and put the G3 harddrive in the enclosure, but it will not mount on my Mac Mini. Could there be something wrong with my HD?
    Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Welcome To Discussions lehatch!
    In the interim, I strongly suggest that you find a means of trying to access your files, to attempt to do a backup!
    If your Mac is Firewire enabled, and you have access to another Mac that is also Firewire, you could try Firewire Target Disk Mode.
    Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
    Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
    If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
    Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
    Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
    Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.
