Dock folder ion covered by app icon

Today my Applications folder in the doc is covered by the address book icon. It looks like the app folder is still there. I can see the edges peeking out from behind the address book. Address book is the first app in the application list. It has been fine in the past. Several preferences have changed recently but I can't find anything in preferences about how the icons show themselves in the dock. Have I done something to cause this? How do I get it back to the folder only? So far I've tried removing/replacing the icon, changing the view of the folder when open, and restarting.
Thanks.

Sorry, but that’s not very elegant. Placing an empty folder in there just for the Dock icon’s appearance?!
If you say so. Not particularly intuitive maybe, but not elegant? Please. It depends what icon you have there, an empty folder/application bundle looks no different from any other.
When viewed as a stack the Dock icon will always change and represent the most recent item in the folder.
I'm going to say, no. that's not true, unless my Mac has issues, (and has had since day one), or I have it set up incorrectly.
Now, I'll remove my empty folder. I have mine set up as a stack. I go to the dock and Address Book is the front most icon. I open Safari and place a new folder in the Apps folder called Z so that Address book +cannot be the most recent item+ I relaunch the Finder. Still, Address Book is the front most icon. Or am I reading you wrongly?
When viewed as a folder you will always see the regular folder icon. To change the view right-click on the docked folder and choose your desired view under *View as*.
Yes great, but I don't want to see that folder as my icon, I have drawers instead. Or I could spend money on CandyBar maybe. The method I use is free and it works.

  • Dock Area and Office 2004 Apps Icons

Does anyone knows is it possible to add to the OS X doc area an icon and function that will instead of having individual app icons for MS Office 2004 app just one icon that will give you a menu to choose a particular application within office 2004 suite. This would save me some space within the doc area.
    Any tip is highly appreciated!

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and enter the following:
choose from list {"Microsoft Word", "Microsoft Excel"} with prompt "Which application do you want?"
set the_app to item 1 of the result
    tell application the_app
    run
    end tell
The actual names of the applications need to be placed inside quote marks in line 1. To add additional applications, add a name inside quote marks, and put a comma between the list items. Save it as an application and place it in the Dock.
Once an application has been opened, that application's icon will appear as well as the script's.

  • Application moved error and question marks for dock app icons - related?

i am reposting this in the Mac Pro forum in addition to the Mountain Lion forum as i have been posting various issues on the mac pro here and i have gotten great help in solving them. also i am hoping to put a finishing touch on my computer setup after having done a FRESH INSTALL of the OS on both my computers with a manual migration of data (no Library items) so as to try and resolve old issues. i hope the experts on the list do not mind this posting and/or can offer advice on this specific issue.
i am getting the attached error this morning on my MacBookPro (Mountain Lion) and have gotten it before on my Mac Pro (Lion). i have had to do a fresh install of the OS and a manual migration of my data (no Library settings etc) due to slightly similar issues.
does anyone know what this errror is saying has happened?
i /did/ have an additional internal hard drive on the MAC PRO that Spotlight was indexing and which i had to take off of the Spotlight indexing functionality but this does not explain in any way (since there are no additional HD's on my macbookpro) why it just happened this morning on the macbookpro.
is this related to an issue where there may be QUESTION MARKS (instead of an app icon) in the dock in some of my other software?? i have one of these on my MBP and one on my MacPro even after the fresh install.
    TIA

The Dock stores Aliases to the actual Applications. When you get a question Mark, it is caused by a Bad Link. The Application may have changed versions, moved, or been deleted. There is nothing especially magical about this. You can remove a Bad Link by dragging the link off the Dock, or add a proper link by dragging the Application Icon onto the correct area of the Dock.
OS X Mountain Lion: Customize the Dock
Apple-installed Applications need to remain in the Applications folder so that they remain protected and can be updated properly. The Installer will attempt to add links that point to the current Applications in the Applications folder, but if you have a pre-existing Bad Alias your bad Alias will not be Trashed. This may give you either the "moved..." message, or the Question Mark Icon in the Dock, or a grayed-out Icon with a "prohibited sign" if you have added things not appropriate for this version of Mac OS X.

  • Dock app icon has other icons on top of it

Recently my HD crashed on my Mac Book Pro 2011 and had a new one installed.
I have slowly (not a techie) been reinstalling software that didn't come with my Mac.
One of those was Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.  After I installed it, the icon is superimposed over the App icon on my dock.
Does anyone know why?? I've been researching and can not find how to correct it.
    Thank you,
    Nicolette

Can you screenshot that area of the screen? I'm not sure what you mean by the app icon in the Dock.
cmd+shift+4 then drag the crosshairs over the area in question - the image should appear on your Desktop. If the dock is hidden make it pop up before you hit the shortcut. The camera icon will allow you to post the image here.
P.S. the downloads folder can display differently by default (it can stack everything) mouse over the icon to see what it is called, it may be OK.

  • White number in red circle in Apps Icon in the dock

There is a number (white number in red circle) in AppsStore Icon in the dock. What does this mean and how do I get rid of this?

    Hello:
In answer to your question, I don't know.  However, drag the app store icon out of the dock.  Then drag the app store icon from your application folder to the dock.

PLEASE help!! I use Outlook for my email and the Mail App Icon that is in my dock, that I know nothing about, was also storing all my emails. So, I tried to delete ONLY the emails in the Mail App but somehow (under Preferences maybe?) I also deleted ALL my OUTLOOK emails in my inbox.  Can someone please please tell me if there is a way to get my Outlook inbox emails back OR EVEN the emails that were in my Mail app - because even tho I never use the Mail app, at least the emails would be there.
When I was trying to delete the emails in my inbox for the Mail app - I followed THESE directions.  It did in fact clear my inbox for the Mail app.  But then I went to log on to my Outlook account and EVERY SINGLE EMAIL was gone.  And not in the Deleted box.  Just gone.  Here are the directions I followed that screwed everything up.  Please help.
Top menu bar, Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors.
Uncheck "Store deleted messages on the server".
At the drop list for "Permanently erase deleted messages when", choose "Quitting Mail".
    Next...
Top menu bar, Mail > Preferences > General.
At "When searching all mailboxes, include results from", uncheck "Trash".
    Select All = command A

    i found out my prob!
    here is what you do.
go to the "system preferences" on your dock.
    click "software updates".
    click "installed software"
if it shows something about a recent update about "EFI UPDATE, FIRMWARE, THUNDERBOLT" or anything like that, exit out of it.
    go to mail.
    click "mail" at the top.
    click "preferences...".
find the account you are having trouble with, once you do, make sure its highlighted, then click the "-" at the bottom of the window (this will only effect that mail account, it will not effect your ical weather or not its synced thought that email account)
hit the "+" (right next to the "-") and add your accout back!
its something with that update that effected mail, i hope this works out for you, if not reply back

  • Dock.app icon appears in dock!?

Well, I tried customizing my dock with a 3rd party app, but after applying the changes, I noticed that a new icon appeared in my dock - the icon for Dock.app. When I try quitting the app, it has a similar effect to the terminal command "killall Dock" - the dock quits, relaunches, and the icon is still there.

    http://oi42.tinypic.com/v46mn4.jpg
Since then I've tried numerous things:
    1) Deleting the com.apple.dock.plist files.
    2) Uninstalling and restoring the settings in the third party app.
    3) "killall Dock" numerous times.
I've Googled this matter, but obviously, it has been to no avail.
So, my question, of course, is: HOW THE **** DO I GET THE ******* THING OUT OF THERE!
I have done a Time Machine backup, and am contemplating a reinstall, but does time machine keep system preferences as well?
Thank you for your help in advance!

Try this: defaults write /Path_To/Dock.app/Contents/Info LSUIElement 1

  • When force quitting Apps' Icon remains in Dock

I'm having a problem when I have to force quit applications. When I Force Quit an application the app quits but the apps' icon with the indicater still on remains in the dock. When this happens I'm unable to launch the same app again. This is really getting to be a pain so any help would be appreciated.

I would be more concerned with the fact that you are required to Force Quit applications, as that suggests something more serious than a stuck icon in the Dock which is but a symptom.
You could start up in safe mode,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US
which perform an fsck on the disk, which may rectify a problem with your disk, as well as excluding third party applications until the next normal restart. This could give you some indication of whether the problem is caused by some third party app or not.

  • Dock Folder icons

How do you change the folder icons that are included in the Dock?
    Thanks
    john

if a stack is set to display as a folder it will use the finder icon for that folder. you can change finder icons of folders as follows:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2493?viewlocale=en_US
If a stack is set to display as a stack it will display superimposed icons of its contents.

  • Had the sudden appearence of a "books" folder that contains the Kindle app.  How do I get rid of this folder and return to just the Kindle app icon on the screen?

I have an iTouch. I do not remember exactly what happened, but I now have a folder labeled "Books" that contains my Kindle app.
Previously, I simply had the Kindle app on the home screen.
How do I remove the Books folder and return to the previous setup, i.e. just the Kindle app on the home screen?

Is there another app in the folder like the iBooks app?  Yu can move two apps together and when they combine and be placed in a folder.  Itunes will guess/suggest a folder name and you can change it.  If there are tow apps in the folder just go to that folder and touch and hold the an app and after they start wiggling mode one app out side the folder and folder will disappear if there were only two apps in the folder.  To stop the wiggling depress the Home button once.

  • OSX Mountain Lion: Running app icons do not appear in the dock

It's almost 2-3 days that I have found when I run an application in OS X Mountain Lion, the application icon does not appear in the dock. In other words, the icons in the dock remain unchanged and no other running application icon appear in the dock. Does anyone else have the same issue?
I appreciate your time to answer my question.

Since you're having issues in multiple accounts I suggest you repair the HD and re-install the OS. ML makes the process pretty painless.
Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First choose DIsk Utility and run Repair Disk. If you find errors run it until all errors are fixed or it reports "Disk cannot be repaired".
Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install in place and won't affect any of your own data.

  • Question mark in mountian lion launch control were app icon should be

I have just purchased a new mac book pro which came with OSX lion installed. As a result of that I did a time machine backup from my old macbook to the new one. All went well and everything was updaed. I then installed OSX Mountain lion. It said on compleation that all was well. All dock items were there, everthing open and closed from the dock, however when I opened launch pad the following apps had a question mark icon instead of the app icon. They were MOUNTAIN LION.CALENDER,CONTACTS,NOTEPAD. They all launch from the dock but not from launch pad, anyone have any ideas whats wrong.

I cannot find it in the applications folder on those accounts, just on the main account
Safari is supposed to be in Macintosh HD --> Applications
If Safari is not in that folder, move it there.
It should not be in Users --> yourusername -->Applications
