Dock folders jumbled

I'm having problems with "documents" in Dock since upgrading to Mountain Lion... when I open it up with Icon view, I get this:
I then have to arrange them, but when I close and open it again, they're all jumbled.
Brian

Just drag those folders down to the right hand side of the Dock near the Trash (but not in it
btw - those other folders are aliases. in Finder go to, /Users/yourname/
EDIT: WITHOUT CREATING AN ALIAS?
Why would you want to do that?

  • Finder sidebar, standard dock folders (Applications, Documents and Downloads) and home folder in English (Lion and also Snow Leopard)!

A few days before I downloaded Lion, the names of the finder sidebar, the standard dock folders and my home folder changed from German to English. What can I do to change back to German?

Well I am surprised by your answer. I thought that if you had used it, maybe something of the settings was left behind after uninstalling it.
I do not think it will solve your issue, but try it, you will never know....

  • Open dock folders always in finder

    Hi,
I want to open my personal dock folders always in Finder. To do this now I have to right click the icon folder and then select "open folder". Can I do this with a single left click? As it was in Tiger...

    Hello,
You can do CMD+Left Click, which will open the folder in a window (bit easier than right click > move to the correct option > left click).

  • Transparent Dock Folders

I have created a couple of folders for my apps and have placed them in the right side of the doc.
I have customised each folder with an icon, however as soon as I drop a few apps into the folder the icon disappears and the folder becomes a jumbled mess of all of the icons within the folder (eg the folder how now become transparent).
How do I stop this from happening?

i agree, it would seem it should be an option. the dock is predominantly about icon recognition and association. for folders that frequently change (e.g., downloads), this kinda goes right out the window. need to remember the location, look at the label, etc.
but i'll admit, it's pretty fun to watch the icons stack and unstack.
i think a hybrid between a half-transparent fixed icon and the current stacks might be more functional and preserve the idea.

  • Can I open dock folders in tabs instead of new windows?

    Hey, guys!
I'm using OX 10.9 and in Finder Preferences I have "open folders in new tab instead of new window" box checked. However, when I click on "open in FInder" in a folder I have in my Dock, such as Dwonloads or Documents, it pops up in a new Finder window. In other words, I'm looking for the TotalFinder behaviour without using the app. Any help?
    Thank you all!

Hi, John, welcome to Apple's user-to-user discussion forums.
Does anyone here know of a way to open new windows without using command click in a tab?
If you want links on a web page to open in a new tab, you need to command-click on them. This will work both for links set up to open in the same window and those set up to open in a new window. There is no setting in Preferences to make links on a web page automatically open in a new tab.
There is a preference setting to open links from other programs, such as Mail, in a new tab. In Safari's Preferences, click on the General icon. Towards the bottom where it says "Open links from applications", check "in a new tab in the current window".

  • Can't drag files out of the dock folders/stacks

On Mavericks I'm able to drag files out of the folders/stacks I have on the Dock (Downloads, Documents, etc.) just as you would anywhere on OSX. But, for some reason my mom (Mavericks) and my fiancee (Mountain Lion) can't. I've tried checkin the permissions for those folders (in Get Info) and they have read/write permissions. This only happens in list view, not in fan, grid or automatic. Is there some hidden setting or something else that would allow them to be able to drag files?

For downloads, go to your user folder downloads and remove them there. Same for Applications. To remove alias from the Dock hold down the command key while dragging them from the Dock.
If that does't work, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. Then try a Dock reset.
Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

  • File icons not displaying in dock folders

I'm having trouble seeing File icons in the folders added to the dock in Lion. For example I am used to seeing a file icon that isa preview of the file e.g. for a pdf the icon would show the content of that pdf. For many files (but not all) I just see a black box with a white dashed line around it (see image).Eventually these icons may refresh and display properly and if I open the folder in finder the icon is correct but not in stacks. It's not a file type specific issue because in the attached image some jpegs are displaying other are not. Any advice?

    Solved.
    Reset the p-ram.

  • Automatic icons appear on dock folders

When using OSX10.4.11 I created folders that I put on the dock (folder side). When I updated to OSX10.5.7 unwanted icons appeared on these folders, each a copy of an icon inside the individual folder, obscuring the labels that I had put on the folders. How can I remove these unwanted icons, or alternatively at least select my choice of an icon in the folder?

Thank you, V.K. I control-clicked on the unwanted icon/folder in the dock (not the stack) and selected "display as folder". Voila! You've been a big help.

  • Dock Folders Launching problem

Having a very strange issue and seem unable to find anything like it on the forums, but apologies if I have missed it.
Whenever i try to open a system folders window from a stack or list from one of my system folders on my dock (applications, documents) it opens up 'Apple Loops Utility" which came with my Logic Studio Pro software. I have this on another machine, but does not exhibit the same issue.
I have tried moving the offending application and deleting .plists for my dock, but no luck...
Anyone have any ideas at all?
    Many thanks!
    Zak

Sounds like a hosed LaunchServices database. Launch the Terminal.app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste this command (it's a one-liner) into the window, hit the return key, and when the prompt returns, quit the Terminal.app, and restart:
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*
    Now, click on a Dock folder icon, and see if it works properly;

  • I cannot remove files to the desktop (or to any other folders) from 'docked' folders, such as the Downloads and Application folders.

This is occuring on my wife's MacBook Pro Retina 15" early 2013 running 10.9.2
I've never run into this problem before, any helpt would be much appreciated.

I mean that I cannot move files from folders that are in my dock.
That is, when I try to drag something from my Downloads folder in the Dock to my Desktop, it doesn't go anywhere, but simply remains in the Downloads folder in the Dock.
A restart has cured the problem for a while, but it is not the first time it has happened and I worry it will return.

  • *** Hierarchical dock folders are back!!!!!

    Just posted and it works!!!
    http://www.eternalstorms.at/utilities/hierdock/
    Sweeeet!!!!!!!

It seems to do the job, has icons in the hierarchical lists (which is nice), and does it all through a novel approach. Here's how it works:
You launch the app and drag a folder ("X") onto the open app window. The app creates a document ("X.essdocker") in the Application Support folder, and presents an icon for this document in the app window. When you drag the icon to the Dock (to the right of the divider, where it belongs) it stays there and acts more or less like a pre-Leopard folder.
I say "more or less" because there is an important difference. Before Leopard you would right-click to display a hierarchical listing of folder contents, or left-click to open the folder. With this app you left-click to display the hierarchical listing, and you can't open the folder by clicking on it (you have to use the open command displayed at the bottom of the hierarchical list). This difference could be a bit of a pain if you've got (for example) Tiger and Leopard systems running side-by-side on your desk and would prefer to have some consistency between them.
(Speaking of consistency, the idea of double-clicking on the folders to open them is not a preferable solution to the problem. Double-clicking is something we do with folders in the Finder; there should be no need to double-click anything in the dock.)
There are a couple of other small things that bothered me about the app. Even if there is no chance of getting the app to respond properly to right- and left-clicks, it may be possible to polish these other points:
First, I was wondering why the icon in the dock needs to have the ".essdocker" extension in its name. It seems to me that the application should be able to remove this extension from the item name even if it is needed for the document in the Application Support folder.
Second, I noticed that when I click on the dock to display the hierarchical list, the entire screen of my iMac suddenly gets a bit brighter. It stays that way while the list is displayed, and goes back to normal when I select something. I'm not sure why this happens, and it can be considered a minor cosmetic flaw, but it's one of those things (like unnecessarily loud Finder sounds) that can get to be quite irritating over the long term.
Third, I'm wondering if the ".esshelper" document is a pointer to the folder it's based on, or if it's a snapshot of that folder at a particular point in time. If it's the latter, then this program won't be very useful for folders whose contents change frequently. This is a question I can easily test for myself; I brought it up because it leads into the last thing I'd like to mention:
Finally, the app came with no documentation to speak of. I understand why Eternal Storms is in a rush to get this released: it's something a lot of people really need. But I'd really like to see just a little documentation explaining what the program does and how it works, so I'll know where to look in the event that problems should start happening.
I've taken the time to describe the application and mention a few points that merit further work because I think Eternal Storms has got a good idea here that could be made even better. It's better than OldFolder in two ways: (1) you don't have to run multiple copies of the app to have more than one hierarchical folder in your dock, and (2) the folders appear in the right-hand side of the dock, where they belong.
    (See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1233191 for OldFolder links.)
Still, this doesn't let Apple off the hook. Hierarchical folders should never have been removed!

  • Dock folders replaced by first file inside icon

I THINK that the dock icons are supposed to show what's inside them peeking out at the top, but my applications folder and another folder has completely replaced the folder icon with the icon of the first file/app inside (i.e. i looks like i am clicking my address book to go into applications and it looks like i'm clicking a pdf file to go into my other folder). the downloads folder works like its supposed to. how do i fix this?

Given that the address book is probably the first application in most people's applications folder, i have a hard time believing that apple designed this so that the applications icon shows up bascially as the address book. i've seen the applications folder icon....they DID design it...it pops up at startup and gets taken over by addressbook. I want the blue folder with the A on it!! Are you saying that everyone else has this same experience??!!

  • Opening dock folders in finder

I prefer the Tiger dock feature by which if I click on a folder in the dock it immediately opens it in a finder window. In Leopard (which I have just installed) I am required to go through a dialogue before I can do so. Is there anyway of reverting to the Tiger method?

Yeah! Come on Apple, the stack and grid view look pretty but are not half as useful as a finder window. Give us an option in the contextual menu to open in finder by default. Anyone wants to turn the behavior off in the terminal here is how:

  • Opening dock folders...

Back on 10.5, all of my clients except me would open their shared drives (mounted on the dock) in a new window when clicked on. Mine would always come up in the Fan view.
Now, on 10.6, everyone opens up in the Fan view. This applies to my server admin folder as well. Also, if I change it to Grid, it still opens in Fan next time I log in.
Where do I go to change this to Grid by default and/or to simply have them open as a new window? I'd prefer my server folder to open as Grid all the time and the shared drives to open in Finder as a new window.

I would like to change the icon size within the applications folder, it seems rather large, I liked the size of the previous OS icons. It's no big deal but it looks comical compared to the rest of 10.6 visually.
