Dock Freeze in Lion 10.7.2

I've had a problem ever since upgrading to 10.7.2 where the dock "freezes". All of the icons are there and I can swipe to the different applications/windows without any problem. However, I cannot click on a new app on the dock. When I do nothing happens. I can start an app by clicking on Go->Applications and the new app starts fine.
This has now occcured twice and the only way to fix it is to reboot or logoff.

  • Dock freezing and not acting nice

Dock on my Lion sometimes freezes up and acts all weirdo. It stops magnifying + hotcorners won't work. You can still click icons tho. The only way I fixed it was by restarting my mac, which is not cool at all.

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". Then, go to /Preferences folder and delete these 2 files /com.apple.dock.plist
and com.apple.dock.db.plistThen restart. This will give you the default Dock, so you'll have to reset yours the way you like it)
EDIT: If it effects your hot corners too you need to delete Finder prefs also same folder com.apple.finder.plist

  • Dock freezes

About two weeks after I updated to 10.4.11 I experienced a problem: Dock freezes totally, only thing that helps is to force the iMac to shut down, since the frozen Dock prevents normal logout/restart/shutdown process (during these, the system starts to logout normally, then hangs when the dock doesn't go away). Other apps function normally. Restarting Finder does not help.
I've tried trashing font caches (becauses this has helped in 99% of the issues in the past) and running disk repair with the disk utility (no problems found). What else can I try, before I resort to reinstalling the OS?
I don't have any modifications to the system, no 3rd party apps that affect the dock. Each time the freeze-up has occurred (3 times), I've had only Mail, iCal, sometimes Safari, TextEdit and Preview running. I've done my system updates (and all other updates) extremely carefully, because I'm a bit paranoid about computer problems (one reason why I switched to Mac, too bad the problems didn't go away).

I have noticed EXACTLY the same problem this morning. It has happened three times now.
My dock crashes when I click`n`hold on a dock icon, say to quit or hide.
shutdown, restart, force quit all stop working as does apple+tab to switch windows.
Its only happened just recently as I`ve been working with 10.4.11 since its release and this is the first time I`ve had an issue.
I`m gonna try the .plist fix tonight....

  • Dock freezes, part 2

I posted this a month ago in the Tiger, Usage section and I have read the thread in this section as well. Since the 10.4.4 update (I believe), the docks in both my iMac G5 and Powerbook G4 freeze on a fairly regular basis. It's fairly simple (but annoying) to undo the freeze. If I double click on any file on my desktop (sometimes I have to double click twice), that file will open and the dock will then unfreeze. The best way I would describe the dock freeze is that the dock actually becomes sticky. I slide my mouse across and an application in the dock which I brush against starts to pop up and then freezes. I also use AOL for mail, and if I get new mail, the AOL icon will start to pop up and down and then freeze part way up. I have tried what I consider the normal fix for this sort of behavior--tossing out plist preferences, repairing permissions etc. without any improvement. Anyone have a sense if this is a widespread problem and if not, what is it about my Macs that leaves them vulnerable to this glitch.

Problem solved itself, perhaps an update did it.

  • HT2474 I did a clean reinstall of mountain lion and for some reason the dock keeps osx lion format

I did a clean reinstall of mountain lion and for some reason the dock keeps osx lion format. Does someone how to uptade only dock application?
    Tks

Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn't work.
You need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/ Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

  • My dock freezes very often :(

lately my dock has been freezing all of a sudden
and this happens quite often now
when the dock freezes and I try to use functions such as dashboard and those F7,8,9,10,11,12 features it doesnt work
and then when I try to restart or shut down
it wont because the dock is frozen
    what should I do?

I'm having the same problem on my new iMac 6.1 . The dock and the finder are freezing so often that it brings back memories of using the paperclip to restart. This is very frustrating and a huge inconvenience. I've pulled out 3rd party programs, switched to the most basic screensavers that came with the computer, and I've repaired permissions numerous times, but there's never anything to be fixed. It's a long wait for Leopard when you have this to deal with almost daily. I will try the suggested fix and see what happens. I just wanted to add my situation to anyone else's that might be similar. I can't wait for the new operating system to be released. This one was wonderful up until May or June 2007. (I am not having these problems with the iBook, but I haven't used it that much since I bought the iMac 6.1, which is at least much faster than my 3 yr. old iBook G4. )

  • Dock freezing up?

My dock freezes up periodically. If I go to the little blue apple logo in the top left of the screen and then highlight "dock" it seems to fix it. I don't have to click anything, just highlighting it seems to fix it. But this is really annoying. Does anyone know how to fix this? If so please repost here or e-mail me at [email protected] Thank you so much!

    Thank you for your reply.
After all the problems with Office this fall this was somehow such a minor thing that I simply passed it off as a small bug in the system or dock it self. Especially since I was getting this on different machines of different types.
Also this usually happens when clicking on different places on the screen while the dock is "active". So in that respect it is a bit like Mail. When I do a "Get mail" and then start clicking all around the place mail seems to stop responding in a similar manner as Safari does occasionally. Except Safari usually quits rather than stops responding.
I have tried trashing the preference files for the finder and window server etc. but to no avail. Also this seems to happen of different types of computers and I have somehow just written this off on some parts of the system or applications being unstable.
I will follow your suggestions and then we will see further.
    Kind regards
    Hans

  • My Dock freezes on right click - what can I do?

My Dock on Mac OS X Lion freezes everytime I make a right click on an icon... It takes about 20 seconds til it reacts again. What can I do?

    Go to  ~/Library/Preferences.
Move the com.apple.dock.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder.
To see your Home library, hold down the Option key while selecting Go in the menu bar.
    See if that helped.

  • Web Browsers Freezing Mountain Lion

I upgraded to Mountain Lion over the weekend and I am really beginning to regret it. I went the upgrade route and soon after the upgrade was performed I began to experience system freezes while using Chrome. After a couple freezes I thought it might be best to use Safari. The problem occurred while using Safari as well. To the best of my memory these crashes generally occurred on pages that contained video. I can't say for sure because I may not have reached the bottom of the page before the freeze occurred. I performed a clean install after many freezes but the problem continues.
The freeze begins with a fraction of second where small squares appear on the screen. The screen then freezes but audio continues. During this time I am able to move the mouse but am unable to click on anything. Only option at that point is to use the power button. A crash log is not generated in the diagnostic reports. I'm not sure what is helpful to paste from the system logs but will provide anything you ask for. I'm a reasonably technically literate user but completely new to the support forums as my previous Macs did not have any serious problems.
I am a graphic designer and this is my primary machine and browser crashes are seriously inhibiting my ability to build websites. I would greatly appreciate any advice you can offer.

I made a call to Apple Support. We ended up deleting the plugins folder, deleting the cache in the Library and rebooting in safe mode. While in safe mode we reinstalled Flash. After restarting things appear to be running. I ran video from NBA league pass and Netflix while browsing youtube and other video intensive sites. It appears things are running as they should (and I hope this continues). I went 15 mintues without crashing so we'll see if the fix is permanent.
I will answer your questions as this issue still has me concerned and if the info is of any use for you or someone might all the details might as well be on the record.
If you haven't already, use Disk Utility to verify/fix permissions.
Haven't done this yet. May do it anyway.
Boot the Mac Pro into safe mode by holding down the shift key on boot. This will rebuild or repair some stuff, including your font cache.
Had booted in safe mode earlier today and while on the phone with Apple Support. It seems the second try was a charm.
    Questions or Observations
If that FlashPlayer-10.6.plugin was older than the current Flash Removal script, it might have remained, before and after your new FlashPlayer install. Remove FlashPlayer-10.6.plugin (again).
I deleted my drive when I installed ML for the second time. Driver should only be from the last few days.
What Graphics Card is installed in your MacPro?
Radeon HD5870 - (I had noticed NVIDIA users had similar problems)
If you run the /Applications/Utilities/System Information.
Selecting Hardware, what is the Boot ROM Version that is reported? If you applied the 2008 Mac Pro EFI firmware update 1.3, you should see a Boot ROM entry of MP31.006C.B05.See here and here for this update. (MP51.007F.B03) Problem?
Selecting memory, does it report “OK” for each bank of memory? Yes
Are you current on your Extensis Font Management software? Is there stated compatibility with Mountain Lion? Yes & Yes - updated Extensis Immediately
You appear to have third party kernel extensions installed. What are these, and if necessary, are they Mountain Lion compatible?
I use a VPN Service and the extensions are required. They are, to the best of my knowledge, ML compatible.
Did your instability problems commence with the addition of the Western Digital WD2002FAEX (disk2) drive? This post on the community might be interesting.
I have had the drive since mid June. It was an RMA for a drive that went bad after 8 months. I have had no problems other than the issue in this thread. Thanks for the heads up though.
Did that Creative Technology Headset require driver installation? No
If this problem resurfaces I will come back to this thread. This issue still concerns me as I feel the whole system should not have been brought down like this. I had maybe 2 or 3 fatal crashes on my G5 quad and this machine in 8 years.
I am grateful for your assistance!

  • IMac Keeps Freezing with Lion

    Hey,
I bought my 21.5 inch i5 iMac back this June so not even two months ago and today it has froze a total of 3 times. It has never froze before since I bought it. I'll just be browsing a page (youtube, switchfoot.com, and facebook is what it has frozen on today) and it will just completely freeze. Nothing on the screen can move except my cursor. Not even the dock will move.
I installed Lion when it came out last week but it is worrying me that it has been doing this so much and only today. I only have two applications on my 500GB drive which are the Twitter app and The Sims 3. I even turned my Mac off for a bit but it did it again soon after I turned it back on. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

You might suffer the same problem many have.
The sites you mentioned are all showing videos of some sort. People reported that watching videos caused a freeze for them. Also there is a ongoing issue with graphic drivers since 10.6.3 on some configurations.
Here are some related reports, maybe you might wanna join the discussion:

If possible (within warranty) you should try to get your graphic-card replaced for free. Any authorized apple retailer is able to help you with that.

  • Any way to theme the dock in Mountain Lion

I've been using Dock Library for the past few versions of osx to theme my dock with a dark glass background, I find it much easier to see the icons with my choice of wallpapers if there is a dark contrast behind the icons.
Is there any way to do this in mountain lion? Dock Library seems to no longer work and for such a basic usability issue it seems mad that I can just pick even from between a dark/light style for the dock.
    Kind regards
    Dave.

    ok just found this
    http://www.nothinggoes.com/transdockx/
and at least it solves the problem but it's a workaround.
Coming from linux I find this level of non-customisability quite irritating, especially when it's a basic function of the os.
    Kind regards

  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 Kernel Panics/Freezes in Lion & late Snow Leopard

I've found some other reports of these freezes scattered about the forums, but usually other people come in and post something about unrelated video cards. So this thread is specific to NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 running OS X Lion (10.7-10.7.3), to avoid confusion and cross-polination of different issues.

Since upgrading to Lion I have had many issues with crashes and kernel panics characterized by the following symptoms, listed here in detail so that people can find them when they search:
Pixellation - colored pixels appear in different areas of the screen, in seemingly random bunches.
Mosaics - squares appear redrawn in the wrong part of the screen. Sometimes these squares are large, other times tiny.
Recovery - sometimes the system recovers once it starts doing these. Other times it just keeps going until it freezes/panics.
Kernel Panics - I've only had the "grey screen" appear once or twice. Usually there is a complete system lockup before this can happen, and I have to reboot the system manually.
    Some solutions/attempts to solve:
Turn off Energy Saving - This is horrible for the monitor and can lead to burn-in, but I found that many of my crashes occured when the system was trying to recover from "screen sleep". So now I run a screen saver instead, which doesn't seem to trigger it as much.
Screen Saver - Sometimes I can "refresh" the system by turning on the screen saver and then coming back. Other times, this doesn't work and the pixellation/mosaic remains. Sometimes I can't even initialize the screen saver at all (in which case a total freeze usually occurs right after).
Rebooting - seems to clear things up for a while, but inevitably, the problem resurfaces.
Running Windows - Not really a solution, but I have had absolutely no issues with this behavior while running Windows 7 on this same machine (under Bootcamp).
Downgrading to Snow Leopard - I have not attempted this, but I've read others say that their crashes went away when they did. I would like some more concrete evidence on this if anyone has it.
    My diagnosis so far:
OS X Lion's NVIDIA driver kernel extensions (kexts) seem to be faulty with this GPU. The Windows drivers for this GPU work better on Apple's own hardware than OS X Lion's. Anectodal evidence indicates that Snow Leopard's drivers (at least up to 10.6.3 – more confirmation needed) do not display this issue. I can confirm that this never occurred in Snow Leopard until Lion was released and I upgraded to it.
My request for help and information:
If you are running this GPU (GeForce GT 130) and OS X Lion, please contribute to this thread offering any solutions you may have or, at the very least, listing your hardware and GPU profile.
If you can, post crash logs so that we can compare common issues (NVDA Resman seems to be a huge recurring kext in the crash logs, for instance).
Post screen shots or pictures taken of the pixellation (colored pixels) and mosaic (squares drawn in the wrong place) phenomenon, so we can build a body of evidence regarding this issue. I will continue to update this thread with the same.
I feel Apple has ignored these issues for far too long, and required too many people to simply purchase new computers and new GPUs. If we can build a solid body of evidence regarding this specific issue, it will be a thread that Apple Support can be referred to.

Crashed again, this time while running screen saver. Here's the log:

  • Pop up window on dock freezes...

When I click on an icon in the dock, the pop up window freezes...(Keep In Dock, Open at Login, Show in finder, etc... for example), the window will freeze and I get no action, nothing happens in the dock at this point...Everything else on my computer operates just fine even with a frozen open pop up window from the dock...help?
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, when it finishes then move this file to the Desktop, then reboot & setup your Dock again...

  • OS Freezes since Lion Update

Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Lion, it has been freezing the entire system on startup.
I can move the cursor, but I can't click on any files, folders or bars.
I end up having to do a hard boot of my laptop and try again.
I know it isn't because of system requirements, because i have a Core i7, 8GM RAM, and a 1TB hard drive (with 700GB free).
I don't have any apps that load on startup, so it can't be that (unless Lion added soething).
Anyone else have this problem & or know how to fix it?
    cheers,
    X

I am experiencing the precisely the same problem.  In addition, text often lags the keystroke significantly.  I have performed disk repair.
Below are the feedback messages that I have sent about Lion.
7-30-11 On five occasions the system has frozen on startup.  Half the time it takes an excessive amount of time for the computer to complete the startup process. Programs lag periodically when commands enter and the autosave feature slows the processes significantly.  These are the kinds of issues I expect from Microsoft, not Apple.  I have never had these kinds of issues with an Apple OS before.  I am very disappointed.
    7-31-11
Well, this is getting to be a bad habit.  At startup the screen freezes, the cursor can be moved; however, (and this is relatively important) no programs , menus, files, can be selected.  Basically it turns into a painting with a cursor.  About 40% of the time it takes two attempts for Lion to get off its haunches and get hunting. In addition, the appearance of text still significantly lags the keystroke, even in Safari.  I think that Lion was misnamed.  A better name would have been Siamese or maybe gigantic fur ball.  But, what's in a name? A turd by any other name would just stink as badly.
