Dock functions (expose, spaces, etc) lagging

Hi guys,
Earlier today, I tried to see how well my computer could handle having a lot of applications open. In total, I opened about 40 or 50, and then closed them all. It was totally smooth, no problems whatsoever. A few hours later, though, some things and lagging. Hiding and showing the dock lags, moving icons in and out, and also, exposé lags, and so does spaces. Some things come later than others, and the framerate leaves a lot to be desired. Keep in mind, this was as smooth as could be just a few hours ago.
I've pulled all the stops trying to fix this, so I'll name everything I've tried so hopefully someone will have a new idea.
1. Terminal - killall Dock
2. Restarting
3. Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
4. Deleting com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.dock.db.plist
5. Booting into single user mode and doing /sbin/fsck -fy
6. Repairing disk permissions
But still, nothing has worked. Does anyone know what could be causing this, or how to fix it?

Can't find the edit button, so I'll add two things onto the list:
7. Terminal - sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
8. Reinstalling OS X
...and nothing has worked.
And for some reason, there is some screen tearing while scrolling... could this be a problem with core video/animation?

  • Expose / Spaces function(s) fail to work with mouse buttons, ongoing issue

Please see this now very old thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2131775&start=0&start=0
This is an issue as old as snow leopard itself. The problem varies in that it can effect spaces or expose. When using a non-apple mouse, one or more of these functions will fail to perform with a mouse button indefinitely as soon as a restart has taken place.
In my particular case, whatever mouse button I assign to "show desktop" fails to function entirely after a restart has taken place. This remains true even if I re-apply the setting in system preferences, such as changing it to another button, or changing it to nothing, and back. I can still use keyboard shortcuts and screen corners to activate "show desktop". I can continue to use other expose and spaces features with the properly assigned mouse keys. Only one feature, in my case "show desktop", fails to function with -any- mouse button after a restart.
To make this even more clear, this behavior has remained the same and consistent for the 14 months I've had snow leopard. It has even continued to exist after I recently removed and recreated my HFS+ partition, and re-installed OS 10.6, entirely from scratch. It did not exist whatsoever for the year and a month I had OS 10.5 leopard, before upgrading to 10.6. This behavior was +literally introduced upon installing snow leopard+. I have a razer death adder 1500 DPI mouse.
Several others share the exact same symptoms, with only the affected expose/spaces function and mouse model differing. A sibling of mine experienced the +exact same issue+ with an entirely different mac model and the exact same model of mouse.
As a relatively unimportant aside, certain "tricks" seem to fix the issue, but only temporarily (one involves moving the location of spaces and/or expose out of the utilities folder, another involves deleting "com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist" from ~/Library/Preferences). Unfortunately, these tricks:
    A. always only fix the problem temporarily, the issue returns
    B. do not address whatever is causing the issue in the first place
This is really frustrating quite a few people, as the linked-to thread can attest to. Along with the obvious, this frustration is magnified because:
    A. This issue +does not appear+ to involve terribly challenging technical difficulties (i.e., merely mouse button behaviors).
    B. This issue did not seem to exist before OS 10.6.
    C. This issue, with the previous two points above in mind, has remained unaddressed for 14-plus months - the entire duration of Mac OS 10.6 snow leopard. I myself originally figured a reasonable time for this issue to be addressed & resolved would be a matter of +a few days+, weeks at most, and at the very least, thought I'd be using these beloved features again +well over a year ago+.
To put it frankly, what the %$#&? Why hasn't this been addressed yet?

Anyone even care? I submitted this as feedback to apple, and haven't got a reply through that route, either.

  • System preferences' "expose&spaces" problem

When i go to system preferences then to "expose & spaces," the function does not work and goes to an error report. Happens everytime I click for that function even after several system restarts and shutdowns.
I don't have a clue what happened because all the other functions like "display," "keyboard," "accounts," etc. do work like it should.
What is happened? And how can i get it to work normally again?
I have a MBP15 barely a month old, so this is absolutely unacceptable behavior for a system at this caliber.

Go to your Users/Library/Preferences and search for a file with
    systempreferences.plist
and drag it to your desktop and reboot, reset your system preferences and see if that works.
If your system preferences hold, then trash the dekstop file, it was rebuilt.

  • Dock functionality in menu bar?

Does anyone know of any 3rd party app or Leopard hack that allows for some of the dock functionality to be replicated on the menu bar? It would be great to have an icon on the menu bar that when clicked shows all the applications from the dock including running applications. This would help when the dock is hidden.
    Thank you!

[Butler|http://www.petermaurer.de/butler> can do just that (show running apps). You can also configure it to show the same apps that you've got in your dock but there is no auto syncing. you have to add and remove the apps to that menu by hand. However, I agree with baltwo - unhiding dock is much quicker. I use Butler as an app launcher but I never bother with that particular menu that Butler put in my menu bar.

  • Cross docking functionality in SAP F&R

    Hi All,
I want to know how the cross docking functionality is handled in SAP F&R.
Whether I should give RP type 11 in store level and RP type 01/02 in DC level for these cross docking products?
Whether anyone has done the dynamic allocation functionality for cross docking products in which there should be an option to send the latest Order proposal values to ECC from SAP F&R so that STO s can be done with those new OP values?
    Regards,
    Resmi Raj.

    Hi Eduardo,
Thanks for your reply. I have the similar scenario
Herein, we have kept relationship as mentioned below
    Article: 100050
    Store: FRS4
    DC: FRD4
    Vendor - TESTVEND1
For Vendor -> DC, we have maintained the distribution profile as FTM (Cross docking) and the RP type for article as 01
For DC -> Store, we have maintained RP type as 11
Now when we have updated the consumption data for both DC & store for the article at DC / store. We ran FRP for both DC (FRD4) and store (FRS4). The order proposal was getting created correctly for store, while no order proposal was created for DC as per the RP type.
Now, how is it being classified as a Cross docking scenario as we expect that the OP (STO's), once their inbound delivery is created, then they should be cumulated in ECC and generated a collective PO for Cross docking. Is that correct. Also, can you please let know the exact process to be followed for the same.
    thanks
    Best Regards

  • How to skip the spaces, ' etc when passing the parameter to srw.run_report?

Hi, I have got problem with passing parameter to srw.run_report. It seems it doesn't take the special symbols such as space, ', etc.. the statement is like:
    srw.run_report('report=test1 p_name='| |:p_title);
if :p_title is "JOE", there is no problem to pass it, but if the :p_title is "JOE LI", then the value of the parameter can be passed to p_name.
Does any one know how to skip those special symbols in the string when passing it to srw.run_report. Thank you very much.
    Joe

    Hi,
    Try this :
    srw.run_report('report=test1 p_name='| |
    chr(34)| |:p_title| |chr(34)
    );

  • Hide dock in certain Spaces?

I use VMWare to run Windows, unfortunately, in Mac OS X Leopard for some web apps that require IE.
I was just thinking it would be nice to be able to hide the dock for the Space I have assigned to VMWare to reduce the clutter in that Space. No preference is immediately apparent to me in System Preferences to do this. Curious if anyone else has thought of this and if there is a solution, Terminal or otherwise, that might accomplish this.
    Cheers!

this is definitely impossible right now. You can request that apple add this feature here:

  • Give me details about rule details functions conversion, currency etc in bi

give me details about rule details functions conversion, currency etc in bi  when creating transformation

    Rule Type
    Use
The rule type determines whether and how a characteristic or key figure, or a data field or key field is updated into the target.
    Direct Assignment:
The field is filled directly from the selected source InfoObject. If the system does not propose a source InfoObject, you can assign a source InfoObject of the same type (amount, number, integer, quantity, float, time) or you can create a routine.
If you assign a source InfoObject to a target InfoObject that has the same type but a different currency, you have to translate the source currency into the target currency using a currency translation, or apply the source currency.
If you assign a source InfoObject to a target InfoObject that has the same type but a different unit of measure, you have to convert the source unit of measure into the target unit of measure using a unit of measure conversion, or apply the unit of measure from the source.
    Constant:
The field is not filled by the InfoObject; it is filled directly with the value specified.
    Formula:
The InfoObject is updated with a value determined using a formula.
    Read Master Data:
The InfoObject is updated by reading the master data table of a characteristic that is included in the source with a key and a value and that contains the corresponding InfoObject as an attribute. The attributes and their values are read using the key and are then returned.
The Financial Management Area characteristic is included in the target but does not exist in the source as a characteristic. However, the source contains a characteristic (cost center, for example) that has the Financial Management Area characteristic as an attribute. You can read the Financial Management Area attribute from the master data table and use it to fill the Financial Management Area characteristic in the target.
It is not possible to read recursively, that is, to read additional attributes for the attribute. To do this, you have to use routines.
If you have changed master data, you have to execute the change run. By reading the master data, the active version is read. If this is not available, an error occurs.
If the attribute is time dependent, you also have to define when it should be read: at the current date (sy-date), at the beginning or end of a period (defined by a time characteristic in the InfoSource), or at a constant date that you enter directly. Sy-date is used as the default.
    Routine:
The field is filled by the transformation routine you have written.
The system allows you to select whether the routine is to be valid for all attributes for this characteristic, or only for the attributes displayed.
Transformation rules generally only have one return value. If you select Return Table, the corresponding key figure routine no longer has a return value; it has a return table. You can then generate any number of values from a data record.
For DataStore objects and InfoObjects: you cannot use the return code in the routine for data fields that are updated by being overwritten. If you do not want to update specific records, you can delete these from the start routine.
If, for the same characteristic, you generate different rules for different key figures or data fields, a separate data record can be created for each key figure from a data record of the source.
With InfoCubes: You can also select Routine with Unit. The return parameter 'UNIT' is then also added to the routine. You can store the required unit of the key figure, such as 'ST', in this parameter. You can use this option, for example, to convert the unit KG in the source, into tons in the target.
If you fill the target key figure from a transformation routine, currency translation has to be performed using the transformation routine. This means that automatic calculation is not possible.
    Time Update:
When performing a time update, automatic time conversion and time distribution are available.
Direct Update: the system automatically performs a time conversion.
    Time Conversion:
You can update source time characteristics to target time characteristics using automatic time conversion. This function is not available for DataStore objects, since time characteristics are treated as normal data fields. The system only displays the time characteristics for which an automatic time conversion routine exists.
    Time Distribution:
You can update time characteristics with time distribution. All the key figures that can be added are split into correspondingly smaller units of time. If the source contains a time characteristic (such as 0CALMONTH) that is not as precise as a time characteristic of the target (such as 0CALWEEK), you can combine these characteristics with one another in the rule. The system then performs time distribution in the transformation.
The time distribution is always applied to all key figures.
    Initial:
The field is not filled. It remains empty.
    No Transformation:
The key figures are not written to the InfoProvider.
Unit of Measure Conversion and Currency Translation
You can convert data records into the unit of measure or currency in the target transformation.
Assigning InfoObjects for Converting Amounts or Currencies
    Use
An InfoObject has to be assigned to a source field of a DataSource if currencies or units of measure need to be converted. The translation types require InfoObjects as input fields to carry out a conversion. You therefore have to assign the appropriate InfoObject to the source field.
If the target has a fixed unit, you only have to assign an InfoObject if you want to carry out a conversion. Otherwise, you can select the No Conversion option.
    Procedure
    1.      You are in the rule details. Select the rule type Direct Assignment.
    2.      Select an appropriate key figure in the InfoObject Assignment field in the Source Fields of Rule area.
    3.      Choose the required conversion in the Currency field.
    4.      Choose Transfer Values.
    Example
In your transformation, you want to assign the AMOUNT field of the DataSource to the FIX_EUR InfoObject in your target, carrying out a currency conversion. To do so, you assign the FIX_EUR InfoObject to the AMOUNT field in the rule details so that the currency can be read from the InfoObject.
    Hope this helps u...

    KK.

I rarely record automation, and when I do I never do a second pass (usually hand draw automation in) but I have had problems with Logic 7 no longer playing back automation. I've been told its fixed in Logic 8, but in the mean time here is a work around.
Select the region where the automation is (if there is no region, create one using the pencil tool and expand it to cover all automation) and go OPTIONS menu -> TRACK AUTOMATION -> "Move current track data to region data." Now everything should play back as expected. If you want to edit the data, simply select "move current region data to track data" and edit away.
For some reason, Logic 7 will sometimes stop reading track automation data, but I have yet to have it stop reading region automation. This is a bug, and according to other users, has been fixed in Logic 8. Hope this helps until we eventually upgrade

  • Slow user interface graphics - Finder, Expose, Dashboard, etc...

    Hi,
    I just bought a new Mac Mini 2.0 w/ 1GB RAM.
I'm not a gamer, so I didn't think the integrated graphics would be an issue for me. However, even simple things like opening Dashboard, dragging a Finder window, or double clicking to zoom on a photo in iPhoto are a little choppy. I noticed that if I do the same thing 2-3 times in a row, it is quick the 2nd and 3rd time. It is like there's a little lag to "wake up" the integrated graphics or something.
Put another way, if I open Dashboard after it hasn't been open for a while, it is a bit choppy. But, if I press the Dashboard key on the keyboard a few times it speeds up to regular speed for the next few times.
If I grab a Finder window to drag it, it is choppy for the first second or so -- then it is smooth and fluid.
I upgraded to 4GB of RAM and verified that the graphics card is getting 256 MB... but still having the same issue.
Computer is hooked up through Mini DVI to DVI port to a 20" Aluminum Apple Cinema Display.
So far not very impressed with this machine. It is faster in a lot of regards than my old PowerBook G4, but it is pretty sad when a new computer can't even drag a window around the screen without stuttering!
    Anyone else noticing this?
Thanks! Hoping there's some sort of fix.
(I have erased and installed 10.5.6, no luck ... upgraded to 10.5.7, no luck.)

I notice the dashboard choppy transition. It occurs when I drag the mouse to the dock and click on the dashboard icon. If you keep the mouse on the icon and click it again the fade in and fade out transitions become smooth. However, if you move the mouse out of the icon and back, you will get choppy fade in transition no matter how long you have been away from the icon. Probably some memory management optimising technique. I'm using mini 2009 with diy upgraded memory to 4GB osx 10.5.7.
I see the same. I googled for this specific behavior and this thread was the first hit.
I'm on a 17" MBP I got a few days ago, now with 10.5.7. I believe this behavior was seen on 10.5.6 as well. It appears it has to do specifically w/ launching Dashboard from Dock. Here are some observations:
    1) If you move the mouse to Dashboard icon on the Dock, click once to launch it, the fade-in transition will be choppy. Don't move the mouse, but click again, and the fade-out is smooth. Don't move the mouse, click one more time, and the fade-in is also smooth. So it seems like that very first launch is all that's choppy. Now close Dashboard and try (2), next.
    2) Click and hold the Dashboard icon on Dock to pop up the menu. Release the mouse button. Go up to "Open" and click. The fade-in is smooth. Close Dashboard, try (3)
    3) Click-hold Dashboard icon on the Dock to pop up the menu. Choose "Show in FInder". In the Finder window, launch Dashboard. Fade-in is smooth.
Launching via the laptop Function keys is also smooth. Clearly Dock has a quirk.
As for moving Finder windows around, etc, those are always zippy.

  • My Dock or Expose doesn't work on my MacBook Pro...

    Hello,
I've been having issues with my MacBook Pro and I need some help immediately.
    The current issues are:
    - My Dock doesn't show up on desktop
    - My Expose doesn't work
    - When I tried to minimise opened page it freezes at weird shape (I can still force quit the programme)
    - Some function of searching in finder is behaving funny
What I can think of I've done wrong in past hours:
    - I tried to install Winebottler as I wanted to open Windows.exe file for my work
    - I did install them and opened them, from Winebottoler I tried to install 'Windows Media Player 10'
    - It automatically started to installing but during that computer started to behave funny
    - So I tried to uninstall Wine and Winebottler from Application, deleted them and empty the trash
    - Still having the same issues so I went Application folder to see if there's any Windows related app left that I just installed.
    - When I scroll down to the bottom, the finder closes it self off and reopen Application folder!
    - Also when I try to search 'windows media player' on the finder it closes itself and it doesn't let me serach it.
Is this some kind of bug? I thought Mac wouldn't get virus but maybe I was wrong.
Tried to turn the computer on and off again, or restart, or relaunch the finder, it just doesn't work.
I need to fix this ASAP so please give me any solutions if you think of any.
    Thank you!

What about holding down the shift key? What about holding down the c key and booting to the OS installer disk?

  • Choppy Expose/Spaces in Snow Leopard

've been a rather happy snow leopard user since it was out and following the release of performance update 1.0, the experience with my MBP (mid-2009) has been fantastic so far.
For some strange reason, my mac started experiencing choppiness in some transition animations- particularly in expose and spaces yesterday afternoon so I decided to do restart my system. Perplexingly, the problem persisted. I have tried resetting PRAM, repaired disk permissions but to no avail.
Is anyone experiencing the same issue or perhaps could offer some advise? Thanks!

Yeah definitely. I have at least 40% of free HDD space to begin with.
Actually, the way the problem started was rather abrupt- I was simply typing a document on Word and noticed a lag in animation so I decided to give the system a restart hoping it'd go away. But nothing seemed to remedy the issue.

  • Possible Simultaneous Corruption in Dock, Exposé and Spaces?

I upgraded to 10.5 a couple of weeks ago, and it was running smoothly, save for some Time Machine issues, until yesterday morning. I woke my computer up and exposé would no longer work--none of my F quick keys were functional, I couldn't Tab+~ to cycle through applications, nothing. Spaces also shut down (or more correctly, the menu bar icon said that I had not yet enabled Spaces even though I had been using it the entire time I've had Leopard), but the Dock was acting even stranger.
I normally keep my Dock at the bottom of the screen and hidden, but since yesterday I can neither hide nor show it at will. I can't change the side it's on, and now it randomly shows itself (it's come up at least 3 times since I've been writing this), but either disappears when I try to click on it, or seems frozen for a second and then vanishes. I've been able to launch one application--Safari--one time from the Dock in two days. I can't make changes to the Dock, or Spaces or Exposé, for that matter, through System Preferences.
I've deleted the Dock preferences several times, run disk utilities several times, started in Safe mode, turned off all my peripherals, reinstalled my Waccom driver (out of pure desperation) and done a clean reinstall of Leopard, but so far nothing has worked. Disk utilities says everything is fine, and though I've run into the same problems repairing my permissions that others here have found--the LONG run time, the barber pole without progress, the weird messages--it seemed to have worked okay.
I can manually launch programs from the Applications folder, and they seem to be working pretty well when they are launched. The only thing that I've noticed that could be out of the ordinary, though I don't know, is that when I delete the Dock preferences--both com.apple.dock.db, and com.apple.dock.plist--another file, com.apple.dock.db-journal, will flash every so often, though not necessarily when the dock reappears.
(right this second half the dock peeked up, disappeared and then after a beat, appeared fully and disappeared again--in roughly the same amount of time it took me to write this sentence).
As you can probably guess, by now I'm desperate and completely out of ideas. Does anyone have any insight?
    Thanks.
