Dock hangs when left clicking on an icon

Hi everyone!
I've got an strange and intermittent problem with the leopard dock. Sometimes, when I left click on the dock, it stops working: it shows the left click menu of the application I've click but the dock stops updating the new applications I open and I can not click on any options of that menu.
If I wait for some minutes, the left click menu disappears and the dock is updated, but if I left click again on it, it hangs again. The only way to fix it is restarting Mac OS X.
What do you thing about this? Is there any workaround?
Thanks a lot in advance!!

That's an unusual issue, at least from what I've read, and from my
limited experiences in Mac OS versions from 6.0 through 10.4.11.
I'd suggest, if you have not already, try restarting the computer in
SafeBoot, and when you finally arrive at a desktop and limited Finder
to use GO and find the utilities folder, launch Disk Utility, and then
repair disk permissions; then after it is done, note the repair & restart.
There are some things which remain mysteries, and routine or preventative
maintenance is among the best procedures and advice to help the system.
I also have and use the utility interface tool by Titanium Software - OnyX.
That downloads and runs free, though it is a donation-ware. And within it,
are some helpful and perhaps dangerous tools. Within the Automation set
is probably the most practical group, plus this tool's Preference should
have the selection to 'restart when done' chosen, since it has to be done.
Perhaps there are other ideas & answers; maybe some involve trial and error.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • When I open Thunderbird, I can not see the inbox window. When I click on the icon in my dock (Mac) it's checked like it's open but I can't see it.

This just started a couple of days ago, so not sure what I did. I also have to Force Quit to get Thunderbird to quit. When I click on the icon in the dock after it starts up the menu bar at the top is greyed out and it goes to Firefox not Thunderbird. Thanks for any help.

  • Updated to 10.4.8 now Dock locks when right clicking icons

After I updated my system with the 10.4.8 and the new itunes my computer loads a lot slower and when I click on an icon in the dock it either otally freezes the Finder for a bit or it just freezes the Dock with the right click menu stuck open and unable to be selected at all. I can open programs and other icons from the dock but the right click is causing freezing issues... My whole computer was running much more smoothly before this last update...
    Any suggestions or ideas?

Yeah its so true, when I right click on the dock it gets "stuck", then I right click anywhere else and it works. My Widgets won't flip, its all shenanigans in part of the OS. We should inform Apple.

You can setup Mail for iCloud on the eMac.
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    • Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 993
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    • Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 587
    • SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)

  • When you click on an icon on your dock...

when you click on an icon on your dock how many times does it bounce up and down before the program actually opens up? because i just ordered 2gb of ram and it seems slower than when i had 512mb

I know Firefox does this weird thing where it shows up and bounces, then goes away (quit) then opens up again and works fine. This usually happens to me when I first install it or upgrade to a new version.
There is actually a bounce limit. I used a PowerMac G5 with some problems where the apps would just keep bouncing and never open. Eventually they would get tired and stop bouncing, not open, but right-clicking showed "Application not responding" in the menu.

  • When I click on a icon it pauses and then opens up tabs instead of just opening up the icon? How can I get it to go back to working the way it used to? Thank you!!!

When i click on an icon it holds it down for a long time and then opens up different tabs instead of just opening up the icon

By "tabs", do you mean something like this -
If that is what you see, then you may be right-clicking on the icon instead of left-clicking on it.
Right-clicking or Control-clicking on an icon in the Dock will bring up a menu like that (it is a contextual menu, so its content varies a bit from program to program).
Usually, it is necessary to only click an icon in the Dock once in order to start up the program (if it has been quitted) or make it active (if it has not been quitted).

  • My outlook will not open yet all other microsoft packages will.  When I click on the icon, the 'o' logo will come up for a split second but will not open the package - need to receive emails asap!

    You're very welcome!
I meant holding the "option" (or "alt") key on your keyboard as you click the Outlook icon on the Dock, and continuing to hold it until you see the Microsoft Database Utility come up. Alternatively, you can open the utility by navigating to Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office and then double-clicking the Microsoft Database Utility app.
When you rebuild your database using that program, a backup copy of your original database (containing your account info, contacts, mail, calendars, etc) will be created. As a security precaution, you should also ensure you have a backup of your database (which you can find by going to Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2011 Identities/ and copying the contents of that folder onto an external drive).

  • When I click the preview icon it does not load.

When I click the Preview icon ti does not load. what can I do?

Are you sure it doesn't start?  Just opening preview doesn't open a file.  Look in the top left of the menubar and see if it says preview.  Double click on a PDF file and see if that opens preview.

    In the Elements Organizer 13
The key to all this is to click on/select/highlight the Album that you have created in Local Albums.
Then make sure that the Sort By: (in the row below the highlighted "Media" header is set for Album Order.
You should see a number at the top left of each of thumbnails.
Then, click on the thumbnail that you want to move, hold down the click, and drag the thumbnail to the wanted new location
in the line up of thumbnails.
Often I had to press down hard on the drag.
Please let us know if that worked for you.
Also, in Edit Menu/Preferences/Keyword Tags and Albums/Enable Manual Sorting Options, I set all for manual.

Move your cursor way over to the right side of the window. There should be a thin bar. when you hover over the left side of the thin bar, the cursor will change to a vertical bar with an arrow sticking out the left. Click and drag to the left.

I TRY TO OPEN IPHOTO AND I COULD NOT.  WHEN I CLICK ON THE ICON DID NOT EVEN BOUNCE.  THEN I DRAGED IT ON MY DESKTOP AND NOW I CAN'T EVEN FIND THE ICON ANYWHERE, what can i do???

    iOS?  or OSX
OSX = Finder > Applications > iPhoto. Double click the app to open it.
The icon (alias) will then be back on the dock. Right click the Icon > Keep in Dock.
Icons dragged off the dock vanish in a puff of smoke.. they are only aliases (shortcuts)
If you mean iOS I can't really understand what is happening..
