Dock icons disappeared after the Dock app killed via terminal

Hello, I'm running the new OS X Mavericks on a late 09' Mac Mini, my problem started when I had finished updating Grageband.
When the update was over, from some reason the Grageband icon became invisible, so i tried using the "killall Dock" commend via terminal to restart the dock.
And it took considerably longer then usual, and when it came back up, most of the icons became invisible too,  well, as I'm pretty sure it's a one time bug and it will be resolved when I'll restart the machine I'll relog to my user, is that happened to anyone else? and is there anything I can do to prevent this problem in the future?
Thank you in advance. Omer.

I just did a clean install on my 2011 MM and am having the same issue. Whats the terminal kill for the dock?
Ive added a screen shot. Can't drag and drop the trash can....:-/
Looked up the cmd and now I have a properly working dock. Didnt have to drag any apps out either

  • Dock icons disappear after 10.5.7 upgrade & .mac sync

    Hi -
I have recently upgraded to 10.5.7, but now I am "loosing" dock icons after a .Mac (mobileme) sync. If I place an icon in the dock, it will remain in-place for about ~5 seconds then disappear completely.
I tried renaming my ~/Library, logging out then logging in, and although it was a "fresh" user the dock was working correctly (I could drag apps into it just fine with disappearing).
When I replaced my real ~/Library, the disappearing dock icon issue returned.
Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone know what is going on with the 10.5.7 upgrade to cause this issue? I have quite a lot of necessary things in my Library (about 21gb worth) so can't really do without it.
    TIA,
    C.

    Thanks for your reply.
I couldn't reset the mobile me sync data; the settings would not save and also my various machines which are sync'ed via mobile me were not displayed.
So I used TimeMachine to restore a copy of my Library (from a version which was about a week old) and all seems back to normal now. I then reset the sync database as you suggested, which worked fine. Thank goodness for backups!

  • Dock icons disappear when quitting apps

This is a brand new 1.9 GHz 17" iMac G5 with iSight built-in.
Software is up to date with OS 10.4.3 and all patches.
While working with the owner today, I quit Safari, and watched the Safari icon disappear from the dock. No smoke no nothing--when the App closed, the icon vanished.
Then I tried to demo iChat--and had the same experience.
It isn't a problem to drag the apps back to the Dock, but it shouldn't have to be done.
I finally wound up launching/quitting all Apps - all finally behaved properly, at least today.
Ideas on what's happening and how to prevent?

Ohairy, I'd guess that it was a corrupt plist. ~/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist.
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how the Dock icons work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.)
If the Dock icons function normally in the new user, I'd delete the plist and rebuild the Dock icons.
If other "odd" issues begin to show up it may indicate hardware problems with added ram, cpu or hard disk. Run Disk Repair & AHT (Apple Hardware Test).

  • Application icon remain in the dock after apps are closed

    Hi Mac OS Community!
I have Mac OS 10.8.4.  I notice that after I quit apps, their icon seems to stay in the Dock afterwards.
How can I keep the Finder from leaving closed apps icons on the dock?
    Thanks!

First of all, note that some applications are not close just by pressing the red button at the top left corner of the application window. If this is the case, press Command and Q keys to close the app, so the application icon should disappear from the Dock.
If this doesn't happen, the app is selected to appear in the Dock, so just drag the application icon off the Dock when it's closed, or right-click it and go to Options, and untick "Keep in Dock" or press "Remove from Dock"

  • Why are icons disappearing from my dock even tho I can still use the location to open the app

How do I keep icons from disappearing from my dock - even tho I can click on the emptied location and open the "ghost" application?

That sounds off. I would right click on the icon/space in the dock and click options>remove from dock. Then drag the application from the apps folder in finder to the dock again and see if it stays.

  • Why doesn't the dock icon update after I update my apps?

When I have app updates available, the dock icon shows the number pending. After I perform the updates via the App Store, the dock icon still shows the previous number. Even after a week!

I don't have any problem with the actual update process: it works like a charm on both my Mac Pro and my MacBook Pro. Being able to install my purchased apps on both computers is great, and the App Store applications on the two computers always know what has been updated on each. It's just that darned Dock icon! Here's hoping that the bug gets fixed sooner rather than later.

  • HT4208 The launch icon disappeared on my dock. How do I find it?

The launch icon disappeared on my dock. How do I find it?

Do you mean the iTunes icon (this is the iTunes Store forum), or for a different app ? If the app is still in your Applications folder on your Mac then you should be able to click-and-drag it from there back onto your Mac's dock.
Do you have the Applications folder on your dock, of if not then you should have a Applications folder off the root of hard drive.
Or you can open Finder, do control-F to open the search, set Kind as Application
then type in the name of the app that you want to add to the dock into the search field top right of the Finder screen, and then click-and-drag the app from the search results to the dock.

  • I installed firefox on OSX Mountian Lion and the icon disappears off of dock when I restart

I installed firefox on OSX Mountian Lion and the icon disappears off of dock when I restart.  I get a question mark instead but when I click on it the firefox icon reappears.

Drag Firefox to a location on the hard disk and launch it from there instead of the mounted dmg.

Find my friends Icon disappeared after upgrade to ios 8. I tried restarting as well as reinstalled the app but its not working. I can find it in Usage, but not in spot light. Pla help!!

I have exactly the same problem on a 4S on iOS 8. Have tried uninstalling, deleting FMF from backup, resetting phone and restoring from backup, but the problem remains. Sometimes the icon appears on a backup Home screen in iTunes, but it never appears on the phone itself. The app is accessible by going to the store, purchases and opening it from there. The app appears to have been running the whole time, but becomes invisible anytime I return to the home screen.

  • How to stop application folder form disappearing from the dock

I'm on MAC OS 10.6.7 on my Macbook 7.1.  My applications folder disappeared from the dock.  I can drag a new copy from the Mac Hard Disk folder to the dock (to the right of the dashed line (my dock is at the bottom) and it appears with an Address book icon.  After 10 to 15 seconds, the icon disappears.
Anyone know what is going on and how to fix this?

Not sure why this is happening, but try this. This is the way I've done it. First, make an alias of the folder (File>make alias) and put it somwhere, like Documents. Then, copy drag it (Option-click) to the part of the dock below or to the side of the separator near the Trash icon. This will place an alias of the folder in the Dock. You must keep the first alias you made.
You can also make one just for Utilities, the same way. The app folder will appear with an A and the Utilties folder will appear with an X.
EDIT: It's been a while now, but I think I got rid of the default app folder because I didn't like the way it looked and functioned.
You can also see I put an alias of my home folder there, as well.
Might as well mention another customisation. Get Tinkertool (free) Go to Dock>Disable Dock Expose to get rid of the very annoying -- at least to me -- entire screen turning black when opening one of the Dock icon's options.

  • How do I get my widgets icon back on the dock?

Help. All of a sudden my icon for widgets (speedometer) disappeared from the dock. I can still get to it by pressing F12 but I can't find a way to get it back on the dock. Does anyone have a solution?

    Ron,
What happens if you enter Dashboard in Spotlight?
If you do not find the Dashboard.app with Spotlight it is most likely gone, but you could get Pacifist and extract Dashboard from your Tiger Installation disk.

  • Clock icon disappeared on my dock for OSX - 10.9.4

my clock disappeared from my desktop and I am now late for morning coffee

There is no system installed clock icon in the dock (at the bottom of your desktop); if you've installed a third party app, go to your Applications folder and drag the app icon back into the dock.

I have tried to re-install from iLife 11 Install Disk with no joy. I have moved my plist file to Trash. Any further suggestions please will be greatly appreciated.

  • Dock "shelf" disappears after waking from sleep.

Sometimes, after my computer wakes up from sleep, the dock background or "shelf" has disappeared. The dock functions as usual, despite this visual defect. I have tried restarting the dock, however, this does not restore the dock- only a complete restart seems to fix it.
I have a screenshot of the issue if that would help, although I don't know how I should upload it.
Is this a Leopard bug, or is something wrong with my system?

FWIW, "application enhancer" (also known as "APE") is a system hack or "haxie" known to cause all sorts of odd system behavior, including failed installs of the OS. Although it is used by many popular system enhancements & its author constantly insists it (or at least the most current version of it) is safe & trouble free, it relies on an API that Apple specifically says it reserves for its own use & outside developers should not use.
If you must use it, to be on the safe side, you should uninstall it before applying any system upgrades, or at least make sure you have the latest version installed at all times, if you want to live a little dangerously. It is specifically something Apple recommends you should remove before doing an OS upgrade.

  • Where is my downloads folder it disappeared from the dock?

where is my downloads folder it disappeared from the dock?

The icons in your Dock are "aliases" or copies of the original so it's easier to open them.
To find your original Downloads folder, simply click on the Smiley Face Icon in the Dock near the begining, it opens a Finder Window.
On the left, click on your "username" icon, on the right a list of folders and one will be "Downloads"
Now click and drag this folder to the Dock next to the Trash Can (only) and it will make a new "alias" there.
