Dock Icons MUCH SMALLER!

I was surprised to see that the doc icons on my 15" PowerBook G4 are much smaller than they were on Tiger. I went in and made the view as large as it would go, but it is still much smaller than before.
I even took out a bunch of not often used apps in the hopes that it would get larger with less items, but the icons are still much smaller to the eye than the full dock was in Tiger.
So far, I am not very happy with the new look of the OS. From the transparent top menu bar that shows the color of your background image, to the hard to see dock icons, I think I am on my way back to a full restore of my backed up copy of my previous system.
What a let down! :o(

I haven't any idea what you are complaining about. In the System Preferences/Dock you can make the icons huge.

  • Dock icons much paler colour in SL than Leopard

    Hi
Has anyone else noticed that the icons in the dock are less saturated in colour than in Leopard 10.5?
I noticed this as I have spent most of the afternoon calibrating an Eizo CG241W and the paler icons in Snow Leopard became very noticeable.
It's the same for the blue folder icons within Finder - colours are very pale.
However, the colour of images within Photoshop or InDesign CS3 as well as images in Safari are all bright and correct, like Leopard. I don't get it.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the new Dock's lack of bright colour?
    Many thanks, Ian UK

Same here. Calibrated Eizo LCD. In colour managed apps, photos show fine, but Apple's User Interface, especially Finder and Dock icons, are not managed at all. Looking inside their app bundles (Finder.app/Resources/...) I can see that all the little PNG and TIFF files that make up the icons have Gamma 1.8 profile embedded (e.g. GenericRGB), although Snow Leopard runs in Gamma 2.2 by default (and I calibrated to 2.2 for years before that).
In my eyes, that is a bug, not an interface quirk. If I have colour management on, I want to see everything colour managed. Washed out icons in Finder and Dock are ugly.

  • My dad's ipad 2 is glitchy. The icons are small, and some have no design. The dock is gone, and when I unlocked portrait orientation, it won't turn

I was just checking fb when suddenly i accidentally pressed this app about this battery thing. Now some icons are small, and some icons have no design
There is no dock, and when I unlocked portrait orientation, it didn't turn. I turned it off and on about many times, and the play, fast forward, and reverse button are overlapping. ITS SO GLITCHY!

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the iPad shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the iPad back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

  • Dock icons dissapear on restart???

I've been scratching my head for the past 3 months with this one! Sometimes when I restart my eMac 1.25 running OSX 10.4.3 the dock appears at the bottom of the screen with only 5 icons in it? I usually have over 20 icons in my dock with everything from system apps to folders and shortcuts which help me work quickly according to my usual jobs.
The problem has been getting more common and is now starting to really annoy me. Today for instance I came into the office to get lots of work out of the way ready for the new year push only to find that my **** dock icons have disappeared! Which is why I'm now putting this post into the forum for help.
I deleted the dock.plist which only reverted to the default icons which doesn't help as I am sure that this problem will continue to happen until I know what is causing this.
Okay now for some application info: right I switched off File-vault because its of no use to me and I use System Optimiser X to run scheduled maintenance etc. Would this app cause any problems??? Also I use Shapeshifter to alter the feel of the mac - could this be at fault?
I really do need help with this as its now loosing me too much valuable time at work.
PS: I'm going to alter the default.plist in the core services to include my preferred settings to at least mean that I can always get them if I logout!
Please help - while I still have some hair left .
eMac 1.25   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Also have a Mac Mini 1.4 and an iMac DV400

    Thanks for the feedback,
I have now removed the maintenance application and have restarted and also logged out a few times and the icons are still there. Nevertheless, This normally happens after a few days so Ill see in the morning GMT10.00AM what happens.
I mentioned that I have actually altered the default.plist for the dock application to list all of my preferred icons/applications which does work so at least I can get my icons quickly by deleting and replacing with a copy of the file if I need to? Still someone must know why this is happening?
The mac has exhibited very few problems at all in its life-span so it is a mystery to my. The only problem I have had is with entourage - which acted very strangely recently by adding attachments to my e-mails so instead of one attachment I get a smaller sized duplicate of it. No answer on Microsoft's troubleshooting site and no help on the mac forums but don't believe its this program causing the deleting of the docs icons.
If anyone knows anything the please help.

  • Hiding a program with no dock icon

I am looking for a way to hide an application which is running without a dock icon.
I have tried using spirited away but as soon as I hide the dock icon(space suit is the app in question)spirited away can no longer find the application.
The reason for my enquiry is that space suit creates a window in expose called "SpaceSuitWin" which is taking up unnecessary space and at times making other window preview so small that they are indecipherable.
Any feedback would be awesome, not sure if this is even possible but any work arounds or alternatives are welcome. Also a fairly novice user so any tech. solutions may need to be well explained.
    Thanks

Find the info.plist file in the Application, and edit it.
    Put this:
    <key>LSUIElement</key>
    <string>1</string>
just above the penultimate </dict> entry.
You might have to move the application to update the registry. Then move it back. Relaunch.
You need to be aware that this will also eliminate the menu bar, which might be problematic depending upon the application.

  • Thin black horizontal lines on 24" iMac screen/transparent dock icons

I have a 24" 3.06 GHz iMac (purchased in August 2008) and noticed after about a half hour of running basic programs (Mail, iTunes, Firefox) I start to get horizontal lines near the top and bottom of my screen. Then if I watch a full screen video I can see my dock icons look almost transparent through the video. I took my iMac into the Apple store last month and told them about it and they kept it for 3 days and ran their "tests" and stressed the computer out to get it to do it for them but they couldn't replicate the problem. They suggested that it might be my cordless phone is too close to the screen and the frequency of the cordless phone could be causing the problem but I tried moving the phone and it still does it. When the display is off for hours and I turn it back on the lines are not there, but once I have it on for a half hour they come back and don't go away until I power off or sleep the display. I've attached a few pics of what I'm experiencing. Thank you very much.

Since the Apple Store folks could not replicate the problem, you may want to consider a cause that is part of your particular environment.
For example, if you use a power strip (surge suppressor), what else is connected to the same power strip? Is it possible that you may have too many power-hungry devices connected to the same single wall outlet, and the iMac is not getting sufficient power? Or maybe it's some electrical interference with another device on the same circuit? As a test, try disconnecting everything else, and see if the problem recurs, or connect the iMac directly to a wall outlet by itself to see if the problem recurs.
Try moving the iMac to a different location in your home and running it to see if the problem recurs.

  • What happened to the dock icon in safari 6.04

The most recent Mountain Lion update included Safari 6.04. All of a sudden the dock icon looks as bad as google's chrome. When using the magnify option it pixelates all ugly. Did we finally sell out? Is this the way Tim is going to run things? Someone needs to get the axe for this!

Boot in safe mode. This will cause certain caches maintained by the system to be rebuilt.
Safe mode is much slower to boot than normal.
When the login screen appears, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.

  • Wrong number of unread Mails in Dock icon

I have set Mail to check all mail folders to display the number of unread mails in the dock icon because I'm using IMAP accounts and have incoming mails filtered into different folders.
However, even if I mark all mails as read in every folder the dock icon still shows one unread message. I can't seem to find that damned mail.
Can I somehow reset the count? How do I find, which mail Mail still thinks is unread?
    Thanks in advance.

Create a smart folder based on mail status is unread. Then go to that folder and you should find the mail
An "unread mail" smart folder is quite handy for other things as well, such as easily finding all unread mail that's scattered across all those folders -- much more efficient

  • My Dock Icons Keep Changing ...

My dock icons appear very light on some of them, other's remain as they should, such as mail, safari, calendar, quicktime. Other's such as backup, itunes, explorer (yes I know, but sometimes I have work to do and can't go at a snails pace with Safari) .. address book shows a lightish green color too. You can barely make out the applications Icon.... It's driving me NUTS! .. I've already relaunched the finder, trashed the dock preferences, etc. and it still keeps coming back ... even when I've deleted every icon from the dock (Poof!), and dragged the app from my applications folder back to the dock. So, this bakerman has baked his brains out with no results .. Thanks much!

  • Dock icons flickering

    Hello,
After I type in my password and the desktop comes on, I move the cursor over the dock icons (magnification is enabled) and experience a very annoying flickering. It takes about 20-25 seconds then goes away. It feels like the CPU is executing a lot of tasks in the background causing slow downs in the regular usage of the OS.
    This started after updating from 10.8 to 10.9. I own a MBA '13 2013.
    Thanks for the help!

Try HD > Library > StartupItems also. If there's nothing in the StartupItems folder, Safe Mode deletes some system caches that may help...
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
    Then try the Dock.

  • Render Status on Dock Icon - Mac OSX

In CS4, when I would render and hide the app, I would get a render bar on the dock icon of AE. This was extremely helpful because sometimes it wasn't worth risking utter fail to reopen AE to check the status. Plus, the open and re-hide cycle took too much time.
Is there a setting for this in CS5? I don't seem to see it anymore.
    Thanks.

    Hi Robert
The proposed rebuild did suddenly reveal the 25 unread mails insinde my archive mailfolders. By marking these as read again now shows the correct count of unread mails on the dock icon.
Thanks a lot, your hint was most helpful!
    Regards
    Erich

  • Dock icon showing 'do not' symbol

After upgrading to OS X Lion 10.7.3, I noticed several dock icons with 'don't' symbol.  What is it?

Great choice. So basically, unless you have something vital to your workflow that is showing as no longer supported, try updating it, otherwise uninstall them. I think I only had about two old Plc programs when I updated AppleWorks being one, so really no noticeable dig fence in workflow and much prefer working in Lion.
    Good luck

  • Dock icon font for iCal.

Hi--looked around and could not find this. I would like to know what font controls the display of the date in the dock icon. It's gone funny recently. I think probably I loaded a font that conflicts with Apple's preferred font for the application and/or replaced it.
I know it's a small thing but the icon displaying with the date all wrong offends my tender typographic sensibilities!
    Thanks for any help.

    riz,
It appears to me as if there may be cache corruption problems with your system.
Start up in "Safe Mode," then restart normally and repeat the "Resolve Duplicates" feature of Font Book.
If that is unsuccessful, download and install OnyX, which has a Font Cache cleaning option in the OnyX>Cleaning>Fonts>System and Users section. Other choices are also available in that section which may or may not apply to your system.
    Good Luck.

  • Update Dock Icon / Delete Dock Icon

I've written a small utility that changes some system settings. The utilities icon is changed to reflect the state of the system settings. I'm going crazy trying to get the dock icon to reflect the updated application icon. Is there a simple way to force the dock to refresh? I've found an applescript to add an icon and it adds a new icon (and the proper icon) but the original is also in the dock. I need a way to delete an icon, I guess. I can't find anything on the inter-webs on how to do this and all my attempts to delete an icon have failed. Can anybody out there help me with this. Thanks...

Unfortunately, I don't know of any simple way to refresh the Dock, although such a way most likely exists.
However, if you don't mind using [GUI Scripting|http://www.macosxautomation.com/applescript/uiscripting/index.html], the two scripts below should do approximately what you are asking for. Just replace "Stickies" (given here as an example) with the name of any other application. (You must also have enabled the Accessibility Frameworks by clicking the checkbox labeled "Enable access for assistive devices" in the Universal Access System Preference pane.)
To remove the icon from the Dock:
    *tell application "Stickies" to quit*
*delay 0.5* -- adjust if necessary
*tell application "System Events" to tell UI element "Stickies" of list 1 of process "Dock"*
    *if not (exists) then return*
    *perform action "AXShowMenu"*
*click menu item "Options" of menu 1*
*click menu item "Remove from Dock" of menu 1 of menu item "Options" of menu 1*
    *end tell*
To add the icon to the Dock:
    *tell application "Stickies" to launch*
*tell application "System Events" to tell UI element "Stickies" of list 1 of process "Dock"*
    *perform action "AXShowMenu"*
*click menu item "Options" of menu 1*
*tell menu item "Keep in Dock" of menu 1 of menu item "Options" of menu 1*
*if not (value of attribute "AXMenuItemMarkChar" exists) then*
    click
    else
    *key code 53* -- escape
    *end if*
    *end tell*
    *end tell*
    Hope it can help.

  • Remove Dock Icon

Is it possible to remove the Virtualbox icon from the Dock while it's running?
    Thanks for the help.

Perhaps the question was too vague and that's why there has been no response. Or maybe nobody knows. Let me try to elaborate.
I run Virtualbox with a guest OS on my iMac. Unfortunately there is no way to easily remove the dock icon from the dock while the application is running. It's rather useless and a waist of space to have the icon in the dock with OSX 10.7 or 10.8. Mission Control and Command+Tab offer easy ways to switch to the desktop with the VM. So that being said I would very much like to remove the dock icon for this application but I can't seem to find any relevant information about this process on the Internet.
Does anyone know of a way to remove the dock icon of a running application from the dock? Perhaps a terminal command that will do the job or a different application. Any input will help. Thanks.
