Dock icons not working, wont say whether an app is being used or not

I just bought my imac yesterday, not even 24 hours old, maybe 17, already im having problems with it. When i turn on my mac and start up an app it works great and what not, but then after i try to open another it, the app will bounce and keep bouncing and not stop, the light never shows up. So after that happens, the icons on the dock wont work properly, the apps work, but the icons on the dock dont.
Thanks in advance, dont take this the wrong way, i love macs, its just disappointing i buy it and in 40 mins my dock starts messing up.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It does sound like your dock isn't working properly, but I'm not sure what to tell you. Have you done all the software updates yet? OS 10.5.1 is out. You might check with software update and then go to the Apple site Downloads and bring everything up to date. Remember to repair permissions before and after downloading software. Maybe this might fix your problem with the dock. If not, please post back.
Good luck!

Can you connect to a wifi source on the device? Enable wifi in settings on the device itself. If you don't have wifi at home, there may be a local hotspot you can use for this.
The reason this happens is carriers don't want people downloading huge files that would slow their network as well as eat up your data plan.

  • App Store dock icon not displaying updates

I keep the App Store icon in my dock but when there is an application update I never see the red badge on the edge of the icon to tell me if I have any updates.  I did have this before I upgraded to Lion.  If I go the App Store itself, the number does display on the "Updates" icon at the top of the page.  What good is even having the dock icon if it doesn't work.  That would be like not having Mail display the number of new message in my inbox.

    Larry...
    MIght be corrupted Dock preferences.
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
Move the com.apple.dock.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. See if that helped.
FYI.. when you post for help, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed. Thanks!

  • App dock icon not appearing. Maddening!

I know various people have had versions of this bug under 10.5.3 but has anyone solved it or worked around it?
One app is just not showing up in the dock when it's open. Also when I try and scroll through the apps using Command/Tab (which I do often) it's not there in fact it's totally ignored. Then when I'm in the app it doesn't even list the toolbar just the Finder. Ahhh!
I've dumped the dock preferences and run all diagnostics from Disk Utility to Cocktail to no avail. This has got to be a 10.5.3 bug right? It never used to happen under previous versions.

Actually solved it by simply reinstalling the app but I don't really know why 10.5.3 should have corrupted it in such a way. Also it was the only one that was affected.
At least I'm up and running again.

  • Open Buddies window when clicking dock icon, not Messages window

Fantastically annoying that clicking the dock icon for messages does not open the buddy list..this should be configurable.

Right!?!? Beyond annoying, it's like Apple has gone out of it's way to just make little annoyances.  I wish it would just go back to how iChat was, or like you said, make it configurable.
Also, if you close out of all Messages windows, and then put the computer to sleep (this is something I do quite common), when you return from sleep, Messages has completely quit on its own.  Why....??

  • ICal Dock icon not changing

It's the 2nd of February today, but the dock icon still shows that it's the 1st. When I open iCal, the icon switches to the 2nd, but reverts back to the 1st when I close iCal. I'll check again tomorrow, but this might need a fix.

Oh awesome, it worked thanks! I forgot about plists, silly me.
    For reference, navigate to:
    [yourusername]>Library>Preferences>iCalExternalSync.plist
Delete the plist file and logout/in- should do the trick. Thanks teorema67!

  • Dock icons not showing if they're open

My dock icons don't have the normal little 'tick' underneath them to show that they're open.
Any idea what's going on? fix?

    beechpark --
The triangle has been replaced with a white dot or light just under the apps that are open.
If your dock is on the side of your screen, the dot is just beside the open app.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to check whether INSO Filer is being used or not?

    Hi,
We have created full text search indexes using the default syntax -
    CREATE INDEX FTI ON DOCUMENTS(DOC_FILE) INDEXTYPE IS CTXSYS.CONTEXT;
How can I find out whether the INSO filter is used or not. Also a basic question, INSO filter helps in reading and "crawling" some 100+ document formats and creating an index against which search could be executed.... right?
    Please do let me know.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Dhwanil

you can specify the inso filter in index code creation.
    create index TEST_IDX
    on TEST_TABLE (TEXT)
    indextype is ctxsys.context
    parameters('filter     ctxsys.inso_filter');

  • My macbook pro says that 500 gb are being used by other storage. how do i fix this?

In my system info it says that 500 GB's are being used up by "other" Information and I have not found out where this information is. Ive looked all over my mac and I haven't been able to find out where this memory went. I desperately need help. Where is my memory! Ive looked this up and tried seeing if it was my Mail app but it wasn't. I really need some help here!

    Hello Masterklaus69,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like there is a lot of data in the Other catagory. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • Menu from right clicking dock icon not working

Now, I don't know if this was present earlier - I am sure it wasn't - but when I right click on iTunes in the dock, in 10.5.3, I get Play, Pause, Shuffle, Next, Previous, Mute, etc..but when I try to click on them, nothing happens.
    Can someone else replicate this?
    (I am using iTunes 7.6.2)

Ran Repair Permissions. Restarted iTunes. Problem persists.
I cannot select Play/Pause, Next, Previous, Mute, Shuffle, or Repeat All/Off/One. Everything else I can access when right clicking in the dock.

  • Dock icons not disappearing

There is an icon on my dock that I don't need. Every time I start up my computer, I delete it off my dock. For some reason, every time I restart, my dock returns the icon to the dock. It doesn't start or anything..it just returns the icon. How do I fix this? Thanks.

since it is HP driver, those could be tricky.
    example here (hope link works)

try going to hp.com, in support section do the search on "manually uninstalling drivers for model xyz" or something like that.

  • IPhoto will not open, saying that the app is being updated - but it is not being updated. Help please!

    Hello all
My iPhoto will not open.  I get a system popup saying "iPhoto is being updated.  iPhoto cannot be opened while it is being updated".
I have checked and it is not being updated and I have restarted the Mac.
    Suggestions will be gratefully received!
    Many thanks!

    Try delete it and reinstall.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • Iphoto library icon in finder now shows as iphoto.app so cannot use finder

I used to be able to use finder to go to my iphoto library and then view each sub-folder for various rolls. Finder showed these by year and also originals versus modified versions. Somehow this iphoto folder is now linked to the iphoto.app so I cannot see the rolls in finder, it automatically takes me into iphoto. Did something change in iphoto or perhaps Leopard to cause this change to the folder properties or is it possible I somehow changed this accidentally? My library seems okay when viewed from Iphoto, but I cannot view the folder structure in finder so it is driving me nuts. Thanks!

I should be able to be on my MySpace page, click on the upload photo thing, and have my photos available.
    They are.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Regards

  • My ipod (32 gbs,5th generation) says 1.1 gbs are being used, that aren't.

My Ipod "about" is saying that there is 7.38 gbs used by music, but my ipod says that it's actually taking up 8.2 gbs. I have my ipod on the "convert higher bit-rate songs to 128 kbps" setting. how do i fix this?

    could be some corrupted files
What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"
    as recommended by:

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
