Dock in Fullscreen

So, when I play something in fullscreen, particularly a game, my dock never comes up. Is there some way to bring the dock up, via keys or something, that would allow me to access my dock while not exiting from the fullscreen application?

I had the same problem and this thread helped me. It's not perfect but I hope it helps! It works better on trackpads than it does on mice.

  • Is there a way to turn off the menubar/dock in fullscreen applications?

    I've recently been using several applications which are designed to operate in an absolute fullscreen mode, and I'm being frustrated by the appearance of the menubar or dock if I happen to move the cursor near their locations.   For these specific applications, there is no need to access the menubar in full screen mode, and very often there will be things I wish to click on which are near the top of the screen, but it is very hard to do without moving one pixel too close and having the menubar drop down and obscure what I was trying to click on.
    An example of programs where this can be an issue are remote desktop access programs (Splashtop in my specific case).   When I make the application full-screen, it displays the full-screen of the remote computer.  However, as you can imagine, when you try to access the menubars on the remote machine, the menubar for my local machine will drop down and obscure the remote menubar.  For a remote desktop application, if I want to access the local menubar I would drop out of fullscreen mode and then access the local menu bar, but when I am in fullscreen mode, I don't want the local menubar to display.  The same problem exists for the Dock, obviously just whenever I need to access something at the bottom of the screen instead of at the top.
    What I really want to know is this:  How can I set the menubar/dock to be permanently hidden when I am using an application in a full screen mode.   There are certain apps in which I absolutely do not want the menubar to appear and it is extremely frustrating to have it keep 'jumping in front of my mouse' at the edges of the screen.

    Oh, it also lists my bookmarks as well. Private browsing? Are you serious?

    This is driving me crazy and it appears to just show up randomly after i hover the mouse over it. Anyone else having problems with making the dock appear in full screen?

  • Dock Keeps Appearing in Fullscreen Quicktime

    Whenever I'm watching a video in Quicktime using fullscreen after about a minute the dock pops up, without my mouse prompting it. The only way to get rid of it is to exit fullscreen, and re-enter it. Only happens in my user account, tried it in a test user and it did not happen.
    Any ideas?

  • How to (re) take fullscreen when AIR app is restored from dock/task bar?

    Porting an AS3 app to AIR -- learning AIR as I go.
    Switched to AIR because we need to minimize our app to taskbar/dock -- works nicely.
    But when I listen for Event.ACTIVATE and then try to NativeWindow.maximize(), it doesn't work.
    Found the bug thread with the workaround (http://forums.adobe.com/message/3251136), which is to listen to the display stage change and if the current window stage is NORMAL then to maximize.
    stage.nativeWindow.addEventListener(NativeWindowDisplayStateEvent.DISPLAY_STATE_CHANGE, onDisplayStateChange);
    public function onDisplayStateChange(evt:NativeWindowDisplayStateEvent):void
         if (evt.afterDisplayState == NativeWindowDisplayState.NORMAL)
         stageDetails();
    Is this still best option?
    Also, when I maximize() using the above technique on the Mac the menubar is still visible.  How to get back to fullscreen?
    Thanks!

    Alright, Superduper app on the backup drive allows me to launch SD, however, when I select the copy from drive (my backup) to copy to the copy to drive, the laptop HD, I find that the Laptop HD is grayed out.
    I dragged and dropped SD to the Laptop and then launched and received the same result, the Laptop HD is still grayed out.
    My SD says at the bottom of the window, Unregistered, but it was registered on my laptop before the OS install.
    So i am I right that I have to get my network working, then register SuperDuper again, then see if I can select the Laptop HD as the destination drive for moving the apps over to?

  • Playing fullscreen QT movies in Leopard causes dock to appear in movie...

    Strange bug...
    If I play a movie in full screen in quicktime, after about 10 minutes the dock will mysteriously appear at the bottom. It's like I moved the mouse to the bottom of the screen -- but I didn't.
    The only thing I can think is that the mosaic screensaver kicks on after 10 minutes, but somehow causes the dock to appear during the play of a Quicktime movie.
    Any one else have this problem in Leopard?

    Same problem on newly installed Leopard - affects QT and is persistent. Never happened under Tiger so assume its a bug introduced as part of the OS upgrade. Annoyingly there is no way to let Apple know they have another bug to fix (aside from the kernel panics Leopard likes to go into...).
    If anyone finds what's causing this before Apple get round to issuing a SW update please post.
    Many thanks!

  • Fullscreen YouTube Videos Still Show Dock and Menubar?

    I'm using Safari 5.0.1 and OS X (10.6.4)
    Whenever I watch YouTube videos now, the menu bar and dock still show over the video.
    This was recently happening to me in the Firefox 4 Beta 2, but not Firefox 3.6.
    This is the first time I've seen this happen in Safari. The only extensions I have installed are:
    -Google Search Cleanup
    -Adblock Plus (I've disabled hiding ads in YouTube videos)
    -ClicktoFlash, which isn't actually a recognized extension. It is currently disabled, though.
    Can anyone help me with this?

    you can make it disappear by clicking the menu bar but it's not a solution rather a workaround, temporarily i hope.
    what is really strange for me was that:-
    1) it only started yesterday, and i did not make any changes nor install anything new
    2) it's still working fine in my other mac i.e. full screen with the dock disappear into the background
    but could it be adobe's flash issue? have googled there but found nothing on this.

  • Macbook Pro Dock doesn't disappear when watching a fullscreen youtube video?

    The Dock should hide itself after a few seconds when watching a full screen video but IT DOESN'T. It really is ******* me off, any answers?!?!

    When watching a video full screen make sure the cursor is no where near the bottom of screen, the Dock area.
    Double check your Dock settings.

  • Screen flashing between grey and background, dock not showing

    I don't know how this happened, but I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion: as soon as I'd logged in, the Dock dissapeared, and the background started flashing between grey and my background. The only way for me to open anything is through Spotlight.
    Whenever I try to make an app fullscreen, it glitches halfway through: half the screen is grey, and half the screen flashing. Opening Notification Centre flashes between grey and open and background and closed. Mission Control won't open, and CMD-tab fails to do anything.
    Upon inspection in Activity Monitor, there is an abnormal amount of processes named "com.apple.dock.extra": closing them does nothing. One process exists and then doesn't in time to the background flash, and the amount of "dock.extra"s grows and shrinks from 3 to 10.
    Can anyone help me with this strange problem?

    Open Spotlight and type Terminal. Select the Terminal application.
    Type 'sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Dock'. Ensure it looks exactly like that (minus the quotes) and hit enter. Type your password if you have one. Then, type the command 'killall Dock' and hit enter. The dock will terminate and restart, and it will hopefully be returned to its previous state.

  • I have just upgraded. AND now I can't view video fullscreen on my secondary monitor?!! Why!

    I have a dual monitor set-up, with sharing. I am on a Mac OS X Version 10.7.5
    I am viewing my Firefox window on my secondary monitor. (NOT Primary) When I click any video to full-screen it loads the full-screen on my primary monitor. When I click the window to full-screen (on my secondary monitor) it fills the primary monitor.
    Before I upgraded, this morning, I could click the full-screen button and my video would appear on the secondary monitor. (The same monitor.) Before this morning, I could re-size the browser window to full-size and view it in my secondary monitor. (The same monitor!)
    So, explain to me, why the change? Why is it when I click on a video to enter full-screen, or want to re-size a window to full-screen on my secondary monitor, it views on my primary monitor. Does this make any sense?
    Why? Why would somebody want to browse on one monitor, want to watch something fullscreen, click a button and then watch it on another monitor? I just don't get it. Or why would someone be browsing in a window on one monitor, click full-screen, and want to browse in the same window on another monitor?
    I am sitting here facing my secondary monitor (which I use as my art-board) and my primary monitor sits to my left. I mainly work from my secondary monitor, so when I am drawing, painting and designing my cursor doesn't 'run into' my dock features, calendar, ext. When browsing in Firefox my window is where it should be, in-front of me. So why would I want to watch a video or browse the web on my left? Why? Why would any developer or designer do this! Especially considering the second, non viewing screen is black! Which means my secondary monitor (in-front of me) is black.
    When I click, view full-screen, whether video or resizing windows, whether it is my primary or secondary monitor, don't you think the screen should appear full-screen in the monitor I am using?! Right?! I mean somehow you calculated a way for Firefox to recognize which monitor to reopen in. So what's up? I didn't have this problem last week? So tell me . . . why can't I open a video in full-screen on my secondary monitor like I have been doing for years? Why am I even having to write a complaint about something I used to be able to do. AND NOW I CAN'T.
    I just checked Safari. Wow. Look at that! When I want to view a video in full-screen in the appropriate monitor I can! Wow! I can actually click on my secondary monitor and it's recognizes I want to watch the video on the same monitor.
    I used to be able to do this in Firefox. I guess it is time to give up on Firefox. And choose a company who understands user-perspective. Or at-least understands what an upgrade is.

    Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • My mac's desktop is gray, the dock wont show up, nor mission control or launchpad work. What should I do

    I recently logged in to my mac and while the finder relaunched it got frozen and is now gray. The dock does not show up or work. The launchpad doesnt work nor does mission control. I can only open applications from a finder window. The apps dont even work in fullscreen. Ive tried restarting it, logging in to another account, and booting in safe mode. None work. I will try to move my things to my other computer for the time.
    What should I do?

  • How can I make my whole site in fullscreen (API) mode, not just the opening page?

    I'm building a site that consists only of static pages, no scrolling, and I want the whole site to be in fullscreen mode. I know it's not good manners on the internet to have a whole site in this mode but it's a site with art and music and I really have a reason to have it this way.
    I've been doing a lot of searching and I've got the fullscreen API to work for me, but just on that one particular page. I want it to stay fullscreen even when I go to another page on the site.
    Maybe I've been doing this wrong somehow and the script is supposed to work that way but I've not been able to make it work.
    Thanks in advance
    db

    Thanks so much for your quick replies.
    The thing is I designed the site and tested it on a lot of different screen resizer plugins and it looked good.
    What I did not count on was the space you lose with the dock. The content just gets too small on a 1366x768 for example.
    Nancy, with "This allows content to fit the available viewport.", you mean the browser window? I've already built it that way.
    Jon, ok so I was right about the API not working on whole sites then but it does have the the opputunity to make a single page fullscreen though.
    Though I want the fullscreen mode on IE as well, I don't think the interface elements take that much space on windows computers and
    maybe I won't have to use fullscreen there. This site is also not designed to work on mobiles so no issue there.
    I have been thinking about some alternatives:
    1. Some kind of workaround that you mention Nancy, but I haven't found any.
    2. Have the visitors push a key to get into fullscreen but it seems that there is no equivalent to the F11 on mac, just different shortcuts for
        different browsers. Or have I missed something here?
    3. Make the next page open up in an iframe but it just slows down the loading of the page.

  • Fullscreen on OS X Panther (10.3)

    I am developing an application that needs to go full screen on OS X Panther or later. I can make a JFrame go full screen on Windows with the following code:
    frame.dispose();
    frame.setUndecorated(true);
    frame.setResizable(false);
    device.setFullScreenWindow(frame);
    frame.setVisible(true);But it doesnt seem to work on Panther. The dock and the menu bar are still visible. Is it possible for a Java application to simulate true full screen on OS X?

    Given that the target machines have Java 1.5 and
    Tiger, how would you go about getting a JFrame to
    full screen such that the dock and the menu are not
    visible? (I ask because I might be able upgrade the
    target machines to Tiger).I was wrong, fullscreen is a 1.4 addition, so it should just work on Panther.
    What happens when you try this?
    import java.awt.GraphicsDevice;
    import java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    public class FullScreenFrame extends JFrame {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            FullScreenFrame myScreen = new FullScreenFrame();
            myScreen.setDefaultCloseOperation(EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            GraphicsEnvironment env = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment();
            GraphicsDevice gDevice = env.getDefaultScreenDevice();
            gDevice.setFullScreenWindow(myScreen);
            myScreen.setVisible(true);
    I wonder if a mod can move this post to the
    Swing forum? There are no mods here. They are barely able to keep the forum running, so don't be expecting them to actually moderate it as well ;)

  • Using fullscreen on my first monitor makes the other one gray

    So when I go into fullscreen on my first monitor, the other one becomes gray (like the Mac OS X login screen, almost like this: http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/183/2/e/linen_desktop_shaded_by_tbg10101- d3ksrb5.png).
    It happens when i click the http://gyazo.com/e9d8ec2ecff4828a8465368de564ebcb small 2 arrows button on the top right of the window, and it also happens when I open some fullscreen programs. The only things this doesn't happen on and I still can click on stuff and do stuff on the other screen is League of Legends, fullscreen on  Video players in Google Chrome and Safari (like youtube.com, twitch.tv etc)... ( By the way when i go into fullscreen on youtube or twitch in Safari and i click on my second motor the Dock and a white list on the top comes up on the full screened monitor (the one with Safari), this is very annoying and should eb fixed.)
    How can i fix this problem with the gray screen on second monitor tho? This problem kinda ruins the purpose why you should have a second monitor...
    Thanks for the help

    Hello Kladdy
    Check the settings In System Preferences to make sure that Displays have separate Spaces and that should make it to where when you go full screen, it will not be a blank window.
