Dock keeps moving to 2nd screen randomly

I have a secondary screen on my iMac. Since updating to Mavericks, the dock, at random times, switches to my second screen I have to then go in to System Preferences > Dock > Change Position on screen to left then back to bottom so it goes back to my main screen. Anyone else have this problem? Or better yet, a fix? Thanks!

The Dock is now on all displays in Mavericks. What you have to do is go down to where the Dock should be and try to push your cursor down again. The Dock will appear. Then, if you want to use the Dock on the other display, you will have to repeat the process there.

  • Place dock on bottom of 2nd screen?

I have 2 monitors, the only way I can find to get the dock off of the main screen (menu bar screen) is to change it's position to a side. I would like the dock on the 2nd screen (without menu bar) but still on the bottom. I was toying with the dock's plist a bit, seems like there should be an option like the side pinning that lets you offset it to a specific screen, or atleast by a certain amount (e.g. I could pin it left on the bottom, then offset it right by the width of the screen to push it to the 2nd screen...)

    ima747,
You can move the menu bar and dock to either screen but they stay together. In System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab. You can drag that little white bar, in the menu bar position, to to either screen. But again, the dock goes with the menu bar.

  • My Dock is moving to secondary screen on random.

I dont know why is this happening but it is annoying and im thinking of downgrading.
To return dock to my main screen i have to set it right or left and then bottom.
    Any help ?

The Dock moving from display to display is a feature of Mission Control Spaces.
To move from one display to the other, move your cursor to the bottom edge of the display it is not on and then move down again (dig down) and the dock will then appear there and disappear from the other display. This enables you to use the dock on either display, rather than going back to the primary display each time you want it.
This setup however will only work when you have the Dock set to the bottom of the display AND you have System Preferences > Mission Control  - Displays have separate Spaces - checked.
If you uncheck this setting, the dual display setting is returned to an extended display setup, similar to OS X 10.7 and 10.8 implementation and the Dock will only remain on the bottom of the primary display.

  • Any way to keep the dock from moving between dual screens in Mavericks?

As the topic says, with the new dual-monitor functionality that Mavericks brought in, my dock bounces back and forth between screens. This is driving me absolutely nuts. Does anyone know a way to disable it? I cannot seem to find any feature that will shut it off.

I recently switched and was having this issue as well. This list (actual slide 35) helped me understand: http://www.maclife.com/article/gallery/70_mavericks_tips_and_tricks#slide-34
It seems like I was accidentally "bumping" the corresponding edge of the dockless screen and that is what made the dock switch. To what level the "bumping" is that sets it off has not been consistant for me (or hard to tell with a track ball) but if i move quickly to the edge and stay there it switches after a view tries.
*Didn't see how to disable but it helped me realize the cause creating the issue for prevention.

  • Why does the dock keep moving to my secondary monitor?

I work with a dual monitor set-up. The screen on my 15" powerbook functions as a palette monitor to my larger display. Everything is set up in the system preferences for the dock to be on the larger display. But since I upgraded to Maverick a few days ago, the dock sometimes moves to my palette monitor. I "think" it happens when I've got a few windows open and I'm writing an email to a client and have to pull up information from various files. So I'm moving around on both displays at that point. I also have the radio streaming from the palette monitor.
The first time this happened, I just went into System Preferences and re-selected the main monitor under the display icon and the dock moved back over.
But, then today it moved to my secondary display again and I tried going into SysPref again and doing the same thing, but the dock just stayed on the smaller screen. I gave up and did a restart which reset the dock back to the main monitor.
Clearly this is disruptive to my workflow. How can I lock my dock into place on my main monitor.
    Thanks in advance. Sandra

    Hey Sandra MacPherson!
Here’s an article for you that may enlighten you about the functionality of the Dock in Mavericks:
OS X: Using multiple displays in Mavericks
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5891
    Working with the Dock
When the Dock is configured to appear at the bottom of your screen, it's available on whichever screen you’re working on. Just move your pointer to the bottom of either display. When the Dock is configured for the left or right position, it appears on the leftmost or rightmost display edge.
Tip: If you don't see your dock because it's set to hidden or there's a full screen app on the display, move your pointer to the location of the Dock. If the Dock still doesn't appear, swipe your pointer towards the Dock again to unhide it.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • Why does my Macbook Pro keep flashing to blue screen randomly?

I bought my Macbook Pro last August and have used it for four months now. It's still new. Everytime I check on it, the screen keeps flashing to blue in like 5 minutes and I push Command + Shift + Q to log off and the screen goes back to normal. It keeps happening a couple times since I got my Macbook Pro. Does this mean I am under warranty?

This is a known 2011 Macbook Pro 10.6.8 problem.  Occasional blue screen when quitting applications due to graphic card switching.  Temporary fix is to turn off graphic card switching.  Under Apple, system preferences, energy, uncheck box.  You can also close your display, allow sleep, re-open.  Should return to desktop as if nothing happened.  We are waiting for Apple to fix the problem?

  • My dock keeps moving to my second display monitor

Just installed Mavericks and noticed that occassionaly my dock at bottom of screen moves to my second monitor which it never did previously. Is there a solution to this issue? I'm using an imac.

It will not migrate a dock currently to another display if one uses a left or right mounted dock position, only for the bottom and ONLY if the displays are positioned side-by-side in Preferences/Displays.  If you use a diagonal or vertical positioned display for the second monitor, it will not migrate period for some reason.  I preferred a left-mounted dock to maximize vertical space, but my second monitor is to the left of center.  If I set the monitor position diagonal up in Displays, I could still mount the dock on the left and not accidentally end up on the second monitor since I had to go diagonally up through the upper left corner to get to it.
Unfortunately, I get no dock on the second monitor unless I put them side-by-side and select a bottom positioned dock.  Apple should offer a dock on BOTH monitors at all times, IMO just like their menu bar is now on both monitors (one is unselected, but always there).  Then one could set up their monitors and docks any way they like and still have full access to starting applications without having to leave the other monitor.  I sent feedback, but Apple rarely listens to its customers unless they get pummeled on something (and apparently most users are happy with a bottom dock and either don't notice or don't care what they do).

  • Any file dragged onto desktop of 2nd screen are moved to main screen

I have a dual monitor setup. When I drag an item (file/folder/app) from a folder to the desktop of the 2nd screen, the item is automatically moved to the top right of my main screen.
When I drag an item onto the main screen, the item stays where I put it. Meaning, it's acts as expected on the main screen.
I do not have "keep arranged by" or "snap to grid" turned on - but it acts that way only the 2nd screen.
This applies to any type of file or folder. It happens when dragging from an app, or from a folder.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    -JD

Unfortunately, I get the same behaviour when I log in as a clean, new user as well.
I don't recall this being an issue in Panther... or at least earlier versions of Tiger.
Does anyone else see this situation on their dual monitor setup.

  • Dock moving on dual screen

I work on an iMac (Yosemite) with a second Apple Display and my dock is still moving in my secondary display. How can I do to keep it on the screen of my iMac?
    Thank you!

    Hi y4nn1ck,
Your Dock can be relocated by relocating the Menu Bar in System Preferences -> Displays under the Arrangement tab. The Dock will appear on the display that has the Menu Bar shown in the arrangement of displays.

Ipad mini screen keeps moving around as though someone else is fiddling with it while I am using it. Any ideas what is goi g on?

    Hi Deeveeay,
Try resetting the device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). When the Home screen redisplays, see if the issue has resolved itself.
