Dock labels gone

I see that when I scroll over the icons in my dock, I can no longer see the label for each icon. I don't know if it was that way before, but I just recently upgraded to 10.5.8. Anyone???

Try this:
1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal
2. Copy "killall Dock" (without the quotes) into Terminal
3. Press the return key.
Your dock will relaunch, and the problem will hopefully be fixed.
If that doesn't work, keep Terminal open, and type the following commands.
You'll want to note what's in your dock, as it will be reset to default.
1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal
2. Copy "mv ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist ~/Desktop;mv ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.db ~/Desktop;killall Dock" (without the quotes) into the Terminal window
3. Press return.
Your dock will relaunch, and reset to default values, and your problem should be fixed.
Good luck!
P.S. When you're done, you can quit Terminal.

  • Fresh Leopard Installation on PowerPC, Dock is GONE. HELP!

I just installed a fresh copy of Leopard on a G5 iMac and the dock is gone. I tried the plist trick and also tried a third party dock software that had a "Restore to Apple Defaults" and it's not working. I need my dock, please help!

Please ignore.. I just ran the updates and everything is back to normal.

  • Dock is GONE!

I have a new wrinkle on a problem I seem to have fairly often. Usually when the dock disappears, the background picture is gone and I don't think I see anything on the desktop. When this happens I immediately search out the *.dock.plist and trash it. Then log out and back in and rebuild the dock to that user's liking.
Unfortunately, THIS time, the background picture is normal but the dock will NOT run. When I go into system preferences for the Dock it shows at the bottom but if I change it, the preference panel goes sluggish and shows NOTHING selected. I think I've clicked most of the other buttons in there but it is still gone. This is only on one of my user accounts. And that is a limited account.
My son is often playing games until the computer locks up so I usually come upon the machine as it is totally frozen and nothing will bring it back to life. This time I think the force quit of Firefox did work and I logged off and rebooted, but the dock won't come back.
I'd appreciate any help here, Thanks.

No - I can not bring the Dock back to that desktop.
Oh, I am also quite convinced that this machine has some rare issue, nonetheless there are several issues that seemingly can not be fixed.
-Safari freezes sometimes immediately, sometimes after a bit of use.. No crash is logged
-One user lost his dock completely (crash was logged), most users have lost the dock & background. Deleting the com.apple.dock.plist fixes this, but it happens quite a bit.
-Often times streamed video pauses and the sound and picture go out of sync. Seems to only happen with existing users.
-The machine crashes completely more often than I would expect and I have to hold the power button down to get it to do anything. Flash games seem to be the cause here... The user without the dock is the biggest culprit.

  • Problems with Mountain Lion – Dock has gone and also clicking trackpad no longer works.

    Hi,
I’m not sure how best to explain the problem I am having but here goes anyway…I have a Macbook pro (mid 2009 model) and recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  Everything seemed to be working ok and I was enjoying trying to work out all the new features. However yesterday when I switched the Macbook on, once it had started some strange things were happening. Firstly my dock at the bottom had disappeared. Normally this is at the bottom of the screen however this no longer the case. I used the keyboard shortcut to show the dock however when I do this, the dock appears but none of the icons increase in size when I hover over them (as used to happen).
The other thing that is happening is that I cannot click on anything to open or select an option. For example, I can’t click on anything on the dock (when I can get the dock to show) to open an application, I cannot select from drop down lists etc (ie select file then software updates). Even when I switch off my Macbook I can only hit return for the shutdown mode, and cannot select one of the other options, for example restart.  I tried to re-install Mountain Lion by holding down command and R (I think  - I read this on another forum and followed the instructions) however when the Macbook restarted and the various options came up, one of which is to re-install the software, I couldn’t select anything to do this due to this track pad problem I have explained (probably badly!) above.
I should point out that everything was fine for a few days after upgrading to Mountain Lion and then the above problems started.
Can anyone help?  I’m pretty stressed with the whole thing as I can’t use my Macbook now and am worried it’s permanently broken!!
Or am I better just taking it along to the genius bar at my local Apple store?
    Thanks in advance.

Not the same symptoms, but I noticed that after a few days of running great, odd things started happening on my iMac. The first thing was that when I would boot the Mac up for the first time in the morning, it would boot into single user mode. I have the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, so I know there's no way keys are being held down.
The other symptom was that Microsoft Outlook 2011 would hang on launch. It would get stuck on the "Setting Up Identities..." phase. Rebuilding the Outlook database would help until the next time I shut the iMac down.
Also a couple of times it got to the Desktop after a boot, but not everything was working correctly and some startup items didn't load.
The iMac also kept booting into single user mode on the first boot.
I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion, and I thought that fixed both problems, until the next morning. Now I just don't shut the Mac down. I can close Outlook, and it launches in a couple of seconds.
So it would appear that something is becoming corrupt when OS X is shut down. If I don't shut it down, it's fine.

  • Artwork on Safari app on dock has gone missing! How do I get it back?

Here is a screenshot of the issue. Earlier it was the normal icon, but now it looks like this.

Go step by step and test.
    1.  Restart the computer.
    2.  Startup into SafeMode
Start up in Safe Mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18760
    3. If the steps given above  don’t help, try restarting the Dock.
        Restarting the Dock:
        Applications > Utilities > Terminal
        Launch Terminal.
Wait until the $ sign shows up.
        Enter the command     killall Dock
Press the enter key on the keyboard. Wait until the prompt shows up.
        Quit Terminal.

  • Help!?  skype problem! one bounce in dock then gone! ?

i just installed skype onto mac os x version 10.3.9.... (the computer is my mom's emac)
the computer had problems, so i had to re-instal the os-- start from scratch-- skype was working fine before, but now it just gives one bounce in the dock, then vanishes. weird seeing as now the system is 'virgin', there shouldn't be probs. i've tried looking in the firewall area in system prefs, but no luck- i don't even see skype listed.
    why is this happening??
i've got to have skype! how do i get it back!
i know this has been a problem with people running leopard, but that's not me!

Skype requires QuickTime 7 to run, which isn't included with Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier. QuickTime 7 can be downloaded for free.

  • The Dock is gone

    I'm using OSX 10.5.2.
One day, after restarting my 1.33 GHz Power PowerPC G4 computer, the dock did not appear. It simply didn't show up. I moved my cursor to the edges of the screen in case some hide feature was activated, but this was not the case. Before my restart, my dock appeared just fine.
My hard drive, desktop, and finder windows do show, however.
Manually, through the hard drive, I opened up system preferences in order to adjust my dock settings. Well, system preferences opened, as indicated by the header bar, but the system preferences window did not appear. I tried selecting the various settings in system preferences through the header bar, but no window would appear. I tried minimizing, closing and re-opening the window through hot keys but no luck. Other applications' windows, such as safari, do not appear. I'm using firefox to write this post now.
So my operating system is rather 'effed up. I've tried restarting the computer a few times, but no yield.

I went to an apple genius bar to have this issue resolved.
Here is what they did: they re-installed os 10.5.
That was it. I now see my lovely dock again.
The only problem I have now, is that I have to reupdate the os from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 and reinstall software I backed up.

  • Dock icons gone

After the software update that required me to reload my OS my three web page dock icons are hidden/invisible.  Mouse over them and the text appears and they will take you where you want to go, however the icons are not there.  Have tried trashing and resetting them to no avail.  Ideas?

I have logged out, rebooted, trashed, re linked, and yelled.   I then tried to add the folder url.png to my hd/system/library/etc, etc as noted in another fix and still no icon (spring) on dock.  So any other ideas.  It seems to have be the result of the Lion software update a couple of weeks ago as others are having the same issue..

  • MacBook pro 2010 background keeps flashing grey and dock is gone.

I was using my MacBook today and it crashed and the dock disappeared, I restarted the mac and it was still the same, then I loaded disk utility and checked the disk and it is saying disk is fin. It flashes grey inconsistently and the dock has disappeared.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My dad's ipad 2 is glitchy. The icons are small, and some have no design. The dock is gone, and when I unlocked portrait orientation, it won't turn

I was just checking fb when suddenly i accidentally pressed this app about this battery thing. Now some icons are small, and some icons have no design
There is no dock, and when I unlocked portrait orientation, it didn't turn. I turned it off and on about many times, and the play, fast forward, and reverse button are overlapping. ITS SO GLITCHY!

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the iPad shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the iPad back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

  • HT201730 dock menu gone

After installing some software, I have lost my dock menu.  I am unable to pull it up by running my pointer over it, changing the hiding option on the apple icon menu, or modifying dock preferences.  Mac OS X version 10.6.8

Boot into your normal account and try a Dock reset.
Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

  • My Dock is gone and I can not launch an application from my desktop.

I need to recover my dock and be able to launch files from my desktop. What happened and how do I restore it.
Also, when I attach my power cord the light turns orange and the battery icon shows that it is not chargine.
This all happened when I opened my screen this morning. I tried shutting down and it does not fix it.

    Hi.
To recover your Dock, try this: From the Finder Menu bar, Go/Home/Library/Preferences and move com.apple.dock.plist to the Desktop
Then, from he Finder window go to Macintosh HD (or whatever your startup disk is named)/System/Library/CoreServices and doble click the Dock application.
    Good Luck.

  • Dock icons gone dark

I just clicked and held my mouse over an application icon in the dock, and all of a sudden all of the icons went dark, as if a shadow was over them. Now only one icon at a time is highlighted, and it doesn't even have to do with which application I'm using. For example, I'm currently typing this in Safari and my Thunderbird application is highlighted.
I can't find any reference to this situation in the documentation.
Anyone know what the issue is and how to fix it? Thanks!

    Reboot!

  • My dock is gone

I was attempting to move files from my Macbook Air (10.6.8) this morning over to my network drive and I vaguely remember the system not liking something that I did, so I shutdown the laptop.  Took off for work and opened up the compter and upon starting the dock wasn't loaded?  Did some research and tried, relaunching Finder, rebooting, checking to see that I didn't rename my desktop, all to no avail.  I was running Parallels this morning when I had issues, and this has caused crashes in the past.  Any ideas on how to get my dock back?

This thread in another forum may have info you can use -
    10.6.8 update - dock not working - Mac-Forums.com
Mainly, in Parallels turn off the option to show Windows apps in the Dock.
