Dock mail icon stuck with false reading

Hi All,
Switched from Tiger to Leopard (10.5.8) for a test ride... so far just some minor glitches... One of them, quite annoying, is the mail icon on the dock which stuck with completely false reading of "unread" messages; otherwise is functioning fine. That happened after upgraded the application to v.3.6.
How can I reset this display function of the icon?
Thanks in advance for trying to help.
A Happy and Peaceful 2012 to all!

Two possible fixes...
Create a Smart Mailbox to show unread messages, check that then to see what they are & either delete them or read them to correct the count.
Try rebuilding *all* the Mail folders (not just the inbox), Mail>Mailbox>Rebuild, after highlighting them.

  • Wrong number of unread email count on the dock mail icon

Hi, I recently got an upgrade to 10.8.4. Since then. my mail icon in the dashboard doubles the number of emails by 2. If there are 3 emails, the number reads 6. Any suggestions for an annoyance, not a serious problem I assume. Thanks

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Dock mail icon problem

The Mail dock icon always shows there are 7 unread messages in my inbox, when there are none. When there are some, their number is added to 7. This developed after I migrated the contents of my drive to my new computer.
How can I get rid of the omnipresent number?

    Hi!
I had same problem, but found solution over this forum.
You should add new smart-box and ask it to show UNREAD mails. It will sort all this "hidden" mails to smart-box, you'll read'em and get rid of this icon on dash.

  • How do I remove the superscript number from the Mail icon on the Dock?

I have unsuccessfully  searched all folders and topics on the left side of the Mail page to find one supposed incoming email, as the Mail icon indicates with a numeral One on the Mail Icon in the dock to no avail.  How can I either find this unread email via a shortcut, or remove the superscript "1" from the Mail icon on the Dock? Thanks!

Hmm, this seems kind of too obvious, but when I look at Mail, in the MAILBOXES sidebar on the left, every mailbox and folder has an oval to the right of its name listing how many unread messages it has.  (Sadly, I have a lot of ovals with big numbers in them!)
Doesn't one of your ovals have a "1" in it?
    Hope that helps...

  • Mail stuck with "updating cache directory"

I've been getting bit by Mail getting stuck with "updating cache directory" on just one of my three IMAP accounts (separate providers). Gmail and MobileMe are fine, it is just with FuseMail which uses Microsoft Exchange servers. I have finally found something that may point to the problem:
    http://www.theexchangeguide.info/exchange-server-clients/2011/28/apples-mail-app -with-exchange-2007-via-imap-or-owa.html
    Folks,
Azaleos has now spent 6 months working with Microsoft on this issue.
The diagnosis appears to be that significant changes were made to the IMAP protocol implementation in Exchange 2007 that significantly deteriorates the performance of MAC Mail.App clients, especially client with large mailboxes, against Exchange 2007 vs. Exchange 2003.
Although the Microsoft support team’s response has been absolutely exemplary, we have been unable to make the Exchange development team understand the significance of this takeback from Exchange 2003, nor been able to have them implement fixes in the Exchange 2007 stack to address the issue.
More significantly, we have also received absolutely no response from Apple regarding the deficiencies of the MAC Mail.App client, nor even any acknowledgement of the problem. In fact, from the complete lack of response we’ve received, Apple has an absolutely abysmal Enterprise support capability and far worse than anything we’ve experienced from Microsoft.
At this time, Azaleos does not recommend that customers who have significant MAC Mail.App implementations with sizeable mailboxes (in excess of 500MB mailboxes) upgrade from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007.
We are recommending to customers that they do upgrade to Exchange 2007. But, that any users of MAC Mail.App move immediately to Entourage or to an e-mail client that implements a solution that is less than 10 years out of date.
    Thanks,
    Keith McCall
    CTO, Azaleos Corporation
I'm posting this both as a reference for others and as a question to see if there is a way to resolve this as a customer, other than dumping FuseMail for a non-Microsoft house?
    Thanks!
    Chip

I finally had to get FuseMail to "reset the IMAP flags" on their end and everything seemed to resolve itself.

  • Restoring Yahoo Mail Icon/application on "desktop"

I had to reinstall Blackberry in order to get rid of the automatic messages from Blackberry I was getting all of a sudden.
My Yahoo Mail Icon and ability to read/reply/send disappeared.  How can I get this back?
Currently, I can read my Yahoo Mail via the Messages application - but cannot reply/send.
I can read/reply/send from the Yahoo GO! application - but preferred having the separate Yahoo Mail application.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thank you for your response.
I apologize in advance for the follow-up questions, but I don't have sufficient understanding of your reply - and my small company does not have an in-house IT person.
I am unsure how to resend the service books from the personal email icon/carrier's website.  Do I go to the Yahoo Email website to resend the service books?  Also, will your solution fix the problem with not having a Yahoo Mail icon (with ability to send and have the number of unread messages listed separated from my work email application?
Finally, I had to reinstall the desktop manager - not the OS.

Go to your Gmail account in the browser.
Hit the folder icon that brings up the folder selection.
Scroll down to the bottom and select desktop version.
The broswer will refresh and bring up your gmail account as though you were looking on it on the computer.
The go to the upper right corner and select settings.
Then go to forwarding and pop/imap
    Go look at pop download
There you'll find 3 numbered lines
    Go to 1. Status
And select enable pop for all mail
    Then save the settings
Once you have done that you can go back to BlackBerry device settings and sync your mail or wait for it to sync it's self.
Let me know how it works out.
I just did it and it sync within minutes.

  • Mail icon shows new mail but all mail has been read.  Won't update with phone reset.

My mail icon shows new mail (1 currently) but I have no new mail.  I have synced phone and turned off several times to no avail.

If you have reset your phone several times and does not fix , then restore your phone in itunes from your backup. Be sure that you have a recent backup with all items that you wanted saved, synced.
BEFORE, you do the restore, try deleting the mail account and reaading it and see if that fixes the issue, otherwise , then do the restore.

  • Help with e-mail getting stuck in Mail outbox

I recently ran into a problem where all the e-mails I tried to send in Mail got stuck in my outbox and were not sent.  After reading posts on the Apple Support Communities website and doing some troubleshooting of my own within Mail, I reached a solution to the problem. When I first realized I could not send e-mail using a certain e-mail account of mine, since all e-mails were getting stuck in the outbox folder, I checked my available servers.  I did this by opening the preferences window, clicking on the accounts tab, then clicking on the outgoing server pull-down menu.  In the pull-down, I saw that the server I wanted to use was listed as "offline."  To fix this problem and get the server back online so that I could send e-mail (as I could with my other account that was not listed as "offline"), I selected the outgoing server pull-down once again.  In the menu, I selected "edit server list."  On the page that pops up afterward, I highlighted the server I wanted to use.  This way, I could see the information associated with the server.  With this information in front of me, I realized that for some reason there was no password entered in the password field even though the "Authentication" setting was set to password.  I entered my password associated with the e-mail account I was having problems with and "walla."  The server was back online.  I could send e-mails again without them getting stuck in the outbox!
This problem popped out all of a sudden for me and got me quite frustrated.  I hope that this brief walk-through helps out some people out there having a similar issue.  Best of luck!

That's one of the best walkthrough's i've read, thankyou!
However, I often have email stuck in the out box. And that's not comfortable… or good for communicating to clients.

    Internet Connection Problem
A bit random but I found that by keeping an eye on the networked computers or the Dropbox icon tells me the health of my network or the internet connection that's causing a problem and all of the time, it's the Ethernet.
If networked computers are up and on the internet, but my PM isn't:
    Solution:
    1) Refresh the DHCP license.
    2) Switch off the ethernet under system preferences/network then switch on again to refresh the IP addres.
Every time I do this, I find Apple Mail reconnecting straight away. I don't know why this happens.

  • Why Won't Mail Icon Stay in Dock Where I Place It?

on Mac G5 Power PC 10.5.8. My Mail icon keeps moving to the right most position on my dock (dock is at bottom of screen) and will only stay in dock while the Mail application is open. When I close Mail, the icon completely disappears. I want my Mail icon to appear on the left side of the dock. When I drag mail icon to left, after a few seconds it automatically moves to the right end (next to the left side of the separator in the dock).
I would appreciate some help. Happened only after I updated to 10.5.8. Thank you. Dale (see my other dock-related issue with my Intel iMac - also after I updated to 10.5.8).

I did exactly as you described, locating the plist file and moving it from Library/Preferences to the desktop. I logged out, logged back in, and Mail started on the left side of my Dock and then promptly shot to the right. It is now to the left of a Google quick search box, an Applications Folder, a Documents folder, and a Downloads folder. I want the mail icon on the left side of my screen. How can I ensure that?
