Dock + mission control
When using different desktops in mission control, I want to be able to hide the dock for a certain desktop. I have this set up as a remote connection to PC and thus the dock just gets in the way. Can this be done on a desktop by desktop basis (hide dock)?
It's in the users Library folder, click on Go in the Finder menu while holding down the Option key. Then preferences/com.apple.dock.plist

How can I fix Dock/Mission Control/Launchpad? (Glitch)
General Description
Mission Control and Launchpad glitch when invoked (whether by using the mouse or trackpad gesture). They seems to crash or quit, and then relaunch themselves (/itself - all the same app?), I know this because:
they both, as well as Dock, become unresponsive;
the desktop background images disappear temporarily (being replaced by blank light or dark grey);
the Mission Control animation stops/freezes and does not execute properly (the windows stay still);
Dock becomes unresponsive as well as Launchpad.
This happens a lot (every other invokation) and seems to be random; it's annoying and is ruining my workflow, since I am a heavy user of multiple desktops.
Behaviour
I usually have over ten desktops, all with active apps open at one time; when it glitches I can't even open or switch applications, though I can use the ones that are on the current desktop (if was trying to use Mission Control).
There is no correlation with the glitch and the amount of applications open, or how much RAM or CPU is active (still happens with only a few light apps open and a few desktops).
It does not matter whether I am using more than one monitor, the glitch still occurs.
It does not happen due to a particular open application, as I have tested with nothing open at all straight after a restart.
Possible and tested causes
An application might be corrupting the glitchy app(s), since the disk breaks after being repaired in Safe Boot mode. Once the disk has been repaired, the glitch doesn't seem to occur until a few applications have been opened, though I haven't tested this much. (I am suspecting TheBrain, but not sure. Other potential culprits: Chrome, Mail, Firefox, Spotify, Skype, Dictionary, Activity Monitor, Finder).
It isn't the operating system itself because I have reinstalled it from Safe Boot mode, and yet the glitch persists.
The application(s) affected by the glitch may be corrupted, and need reinstalled - that is, if they weren't already by reinstalling the operating system (they are in the '/System/CoreServices' folder).
Not-so-possible:
I doubt it is a virus - it would be a pretty pointless glitch for one to cause.
I have Time Machine running most of the time, but I have no reason to believe that is the cause.
I am using a NEET mini display port to HDMI adapter for my second monitor (no idea how that could be causing the issue).
Help
Any ideas on what I could do to fix this?
And does anyone know how to reinstall Mission Control, Dock and Launchpad (I think they are all part of '/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app')? This might be worth a try.

Thanks for any help! One thing I'd like for you to try: Create a new user account. Log into the new account and see if the same problems persist.
Many times such crashes are the result of corrupted preference or cache files. The above will eliminate these in the user account but not at the system level. So, I suggest you use a utility such as Lion Cache Cleaner 6.0.11 or Purity 1.10 to clear out cache files at the system level. I've never used the latter software but I, personally, use the former one on my computers. -
Messages stuck in background of mission control
When I click the Full Screen button on Messages it becomes the background for Mission Control. If I quit and restart Messages the issue is still there. If I quit all my open applications, and then restart my computer the issue is still there. The background on mission control stays updated; if I get a message it shows there.
Does anyone know what settings I would want to look at in order to make this stop happening. I want to be able to switch to the space for Messages in Mission Control to see my messages but not to see Messages all the time.Hi,
My Normal Settings are.
Left gives me Dashboard.
Right is normally iTunes in Full Screen Mode.
I run Messages with 8 or 9 individual Buddy Lists open as well as the Chat/Interface Main window.
If I set the main Messages window to Full Screen then it will do so but the Buddy lists remain on the "central" screen (Space?).
The Main window has moved to the right.
If go to look at Messages and then use the Dock > Mission Control icon the Messages app is still on view.
EDIT
Or it was when I tested this first and made me wonder if this was what you meant by "background"
I repeated this to take a snap shot and can only get my Desktop as the Background whilst the Dashboard, Desktop space and Messages spaces show across the top.
During the initial process I did change some things in the Messages > Preferences > Accounts.
I had spotted two were not Logged in and I also changed the Descriptions for them.

I recently logged in to my mac and while the finder relaunched it got frozen and is now gray. The dock does not show up or work. The launchpad doesnt work nor does mission control. I can only open applications from a finder window. The apps dont even work in fullscreen. Ive tried restarting it, logging in to another account, and booting in safe mode. None work. I will try to move my things to my other computer for the time.
What should I do?Run through this list of fixes, if your getting in do #9 as soon as possible.
Step by Step to fix your Mac -
Dock frequently crashes and restarts when entering Mission Control
Hello,
Long time lurker, first time poster here. Hoping someone can help me with this issue.
I am running Mac OS X Lion (10.8) on a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 24" iMac with 12 GB RAM. Peripherals include Apple wired keyboard, Apple Magic Trackpad, Logitech G9x laser mouse, and a Seagate USB External Hard Drive, and an old Dell 17" LCD (E177FP) connected as a second monitor.
Throughout the day, I work with Adobe Photoshop, Abode Indesign, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, BB Edit, Cyberduck, iTunes, Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection, Terminal, Text Edit, Screen Sharing, Microsoft Excel 2011, Microsoft Word 2011, and additional applications across eight desktops in Mission Control (for a total of 16 screens, with the two diaplays).
Approximately 6-12 times a day Mission Control will become unresponsive while entering it, whether by using four-finger swipe up on trackpad, mouse button 4 on Logitech mouse, or control + up arrow on keyboard. I can still move the mouse cursor, type in applications, and click on applications. However, the dock relaunches (all of my minimized windows at restored to my screen) and then Mission Control is responsive again. The window of unavailability is about 10 seconds.
I have used Macs for years now and never before have I had to deal with such a minor (yet frequent) inconvenience. They have always "just worked."
I am including my most recent crash report and am hoping that someone will have a solution that doesn't involve installing the operating system from scratch.
Thank you for your time.
Joe

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Dock Crashes When Accessing Mission Control
For some reason, the Dock crashes and reboots every time I try and get into Mission Control. The log is posted below from Console.app. Anyone know why this might be happening? I'm on the latest version of Mavericks.
The only strange thing that's happened to my OS is a bash script that ran without admin permissions that started deleting files (there was a bug in the script I wrote) off my drive in alphabetical order. Mostly that just screwed up some applications like the Adobe Creative Suite and Autodesk Maya, but it perhaps had an impact here?

Might be corrupted dock preferences.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following;
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.dock.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then try Mission Control. -
[bug] Can't open new desktop from mission control if dock is on the right side
I can't open new desktop from mission control if dock is on the right side
I recently moved my dock to the right so I didn't know the + sign would switch sides. I normally run around that many too depending on how large of a stack whatever I am programming is using.
Anyways, thanks for the help -
I would like to know how to get my mission control icon back onto the dock as I think it is now in trash?
where to put downoads is a Preference in
Safrai Preferences > General ...
... save downloaded files to: Downloads Folder or Other: specify -
Is it possible to show the dock bar only in mission control mode?
Hi.
I dont wont to have the dock in my workspace. Can I move the dock to mission control an launch apps from there?
tx
mitschelYou could however maybe trick the Dock by setting the delay rate to some high number, say one hour.
In terminal copy and paste:
defaults write com.apple.Dock autohide-delay -float 3600.00 && killall Dock
To restore the default behavior, enter:
defaults delete com.apple.Dock autohide-delay && killall Dock

Blinking gray desktop background and no dock/launchpad/mission control
I just updated to Mountain Lion and my desktop background keeps changing from the picture to a gray screen. My dock also wont appear on the bottom of my screen and launch pad and mission control also do not work. I called Apple once and I reinstalled ML once already and its still doing it. Any suggestions?
reboot, hold CMD+R .
you'll be in the recovery partition.
go to disk utility, and Verify and Repair your boot disk and its permissions.
exit out of Disk Utility and then go to the area that says reinstall Mountain Lion.
Do so.
This will hopefully fix your issues. -
Mission Control and Docked items?
Hello. I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard. Back in Snow Leopard, Expose would reveal docked items in my window array. Now, with Mission Control, docked items are not included. I can't find a setting that will bring this function back. Not a huge deal, but I kind of miss it. Anyone know how to make it happen?
Have you launched the System Preferences app and selected the Misson Control tab? There you can set the preferences and my first guess is that the preferences were reset (for some reason) to nothing.

Mission Control and the dock -- strange behavior
Go to Mission Control and click on an open application's dock icon: Lion acts very erratically. It might switch the right app. It might switch to some other app.
Note: Have a couple of full-screen apps, like Safari, Mail or iTunes, open.
This is driving me crazy. Since the dock isn't displayed in full-screen apps, I tend to do the four-finger-up gesture to get to the Mission Control screen to get to the dock to switch to another open app. I recognize that there are other ways to switch apps, but shouldn't this way work work, too?I feel your pain. "Over 250 exciting new features" was the promise. I, literally, have found ZERO new features that are useful. Yes, that's right---not a single one.
And for the record....I am a long-time Apple fan, and Apple addict. My first computer was in 1985 and it was an Apple. Every computer ever since has been Apple. I've never had a complaint---until now. I'll just say it in plain English---Lion is GARBAGE. I have found absolutely, positively, nothing useful about it---zip, zero, nada! Now I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of this junk and put Snow Leopard back on. Apple should be ashamed---this is pitiful. And my computer has NEVER EVER crashed before (well, okay..I'm sure it has at some point over the last 26 years..but I don't recall when). But now my computer crashes at least 3 times per day. Un-fricking-believable. -
Entire dock bounces, Mission Control laggy opening
When I hover over dock, the dock bounces back open twice. Also, Mission Control and Safari are very laggy. This happened about a month ago and eventually went away. It came back after downloading the new update.
Problem Solved.... opened up Autocad and quit it and the problem goes away!

Assigning Dock items to multi screen desktops on Mission Control (ML)
Right so I've recently bought a new rMBP. I use it both in my studio where I hook it up to a Samsung external monitor which works fine, and outside in various offices and other locations.
On my previous MBP, which was running Snow Leopard, I used Spaces extensively across a variety of different apps/programmes. I've started to use Mission Control, as a replacement of Spaces. My only issue with it is when I connect it to my external monitor, I'd like to assign apps not just to specific desktops but also to specific screens within that 'mission control desktop'.
Eg. On spaces, I had Mail and Calendar assigned to one Space. When connected to external monitor, I would move mail onto the external display and keep calendar on the laptop screen, so could effectively view both full screen on two different displays. These settings seemed to stick when I turned the laptop off, or disconnected and reconnected it to the external screen. With Mission Control however, it never sticks. If the laptop goes off, disconnects from the screen, or even logs out, the mail and calendar app will be in the same 'Desktop', but they won't assign to the specific screens I want them to, and will just revert to the primary display 'Desktop', meaning I have to move the apps all over again across all my different Mission Control Desktops.
Is there a way to 'assign to this desktop' when working dual screen that sticks? Hope that makes sense. I've had a look throughout the support pages but haven't come across anyone with the same problem yet...Right so I've recently bought a new rMBP.
