Dock not appearing fluidly

I know this may sound rediculous, but as of late my MacBook (white, 2 ghz, 2 GB RAM) has been acting up. One of the most nagging things I've been noticing lately is that when I go to my dock, which is set to hide, it comes up, but its like it misses a frame. There is just a millisecond of a delay and it is nagging me unbelievably. Is there something that I could do to optimize my dock, so to speak? If further clarification of what is happening is needed I can try to describe it better. Thanks.

I've noticed that if the Dock's size is increased to beyond the screen's limit, that is, if one keeps increasing the size of the Dock after it has extended as far as it can, edge to edge, it will stutter on return from hiding.
Obviously, you cannot see the Dock "larger" than the screen, but the effect is the same. This can also happen if you keep your Dock's size edge to edge and no further, with it returning from hiding smoothly, then add to the Dock, whether it be a running app or an additional shortcut, and the Dock will then start to stutter on return.
In short, try decreasing the size of your Doc until you see the sides of the Dock come in. It should then return from hiding smoothly.
And if you hold down the option key while resizing the Dock using the separator, it will adjust to preset sizes.

  • Dock not appearing, can't open HD

It's a 17" PPC 1ghz Powerbook. Has been working fine. Suddenly I boot up and the dock will not appear (I had it set to autohide but cannot get it to come out)
Further, if I try to open Mac HD it does not open, the desktop menu bar "blinks" as if Finder was restarting.
I was able to access the HD by booting it in firewire (hold down T) mode and was from another mac able to put an alias for disk utility on the desktop. Then when I booted disk utility would run from the newly placed alias. I repaired permissions and started in safe mode. Still the same thing.
Can't even open an info window on the HD.
I ran tech tool from DVD and it reported no problems with the disk.
The powerbook is about 6 years old - could it be the internal battery? I replaced the actual battery a year ago.
any help on this mystery is appreciated.

If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Yea its hidden, but sometimes at startup when i move my cursor to the very bottom of the screen, so the dock shows, it doesnt appear as it should, so i have to restart, then everything is A-ok

  • Dock not appearing & system freeze

I'm runing OSX 10.6.8 and yesterday started having an issue where my dock pops up during start up and then goes away, comes back a few times, but ultimately will not come up at all.
Then system slows down and then freezes with a spinning beach ball.
I've tried killall Dock, but it says command can't be completed.
    Reinstalled Snow Leopard
Ran Disk Utility to fix permissions
    Nothing works...
    A few interesting things:
Not an issue in Safe Mode
Not an issue when on my "Test User" account
AND not an issue after booting normally AFTER being in Safe Mode.  That's why I'm able to write this post.  I boot into safe mode then restart and boot normally and everything is fine.
Nothing unusual in Activity Monitor that I can see...
    Thanks for your advice!

I've done the Parallels upgrade, repaired permissions, rebooted several times but still no Dock. Also, my Desktop wallpaper, which was changing every few seconds yesterday, has now dissappeared completely and I just get the Apple purple desktop.   15" MBP (early 2009), OS X.6.8. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Finder & Dock do not work - Mac Hard Drive does not appear on Desktop

Until yesterday, my powerbook was working properly.
This morning, I wanted to use it and I had the following problems after login.
1/ My Mac Hard drive does not appear on my dekstop
2/ My dock appears but no icon works when I click on them. So, I can't open finder. I have no response.
3/ Furthermore, my top bar (with clock, login name, Airport icon...) appears but it is frozed.
I try several solutions as :
    - rebooting in safe mode,
    - rebooting, with in the same time, hold different keys (option, apple, p & R)...
As of today, no solution works.
    Thanks for your help.

Nota: if i used my daugther login (she is not admin), I have the same issues.
Ok, that's good enough. You may be able to repair this with the 10.5.8 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    EDIT:
I have around 5 Go space left on my Mac
Also, your getting very low on disk space. Try to copy some of the data off to other media. *Do it before you try applying the combo, you'll need the space.*

  • Spaces not appearing in the Dock

I have gone to spaces in they system preferences and turned it on and also check the show in menu bar. The spaces icon, however, will not appear in the dock. Anyone know how to fix this?

It's an application. Just drag it to your dock from the applications folder.

  • The Fan option does not appear for folders in the dock.

The fan option does not appear on folders on the Dock. Stack option is checked, but all I get is grid list and automatic....running 10.5.2
    any ideas?

Not that I know of. When on the side no fan for folders and no 3D look, which I prefer. Background of the Dock very dark so the white dot showing an app is open is easy to see and it all looks very sophisticated.
You might check with third party apps to see if anyone is changing that, but most people don't like the fan so I doubt if anyone is working to add it in.

  • Dock does not appear

I am having problems with the dock on my iMac. The dock does not appear and the display freezes continually.  Any help?

If you have Parallels installed and have updated to 10.6.8, there is a know conflict involving the dock behavior.  The solution is to update Parallels to the latest version.

  • New mail notification counter not appearing in dock

I've noticed recently that my new mail notification counter doesn't appear in the dock if I have Mail sitting in the background. I can be working in, say, Word, and not know I have new mail. Yet, when I go to Mail there are emails sitting there (and the dock counter appears as soon as I go to Mail.
Not a major problem, I agree, but it would be nice to fix it, if anyone has any suggestions.
    Cheers
    Phil

Thanks for the replies. I do have preferences set as you suggest but am not getting the notifications when Mail is in the background. I'll just live with it...

  • On restart Launch Pad, Reminders, App Store and Notes appears back on Dock

I have installed Mountain Lion and loving most of the features.
I am using the five finger pinch shortcut on the trackpad to get to the Dashboard.
Its a great feature so now I have deleted all my apps on the dock.
Instead I have put my many folders on the dock.
However, on restart of my macbook pro the Launch Pad, Reminders, App Store and Notes appears back on dock
Is there a way I can switch this annoying push to have to use Apple apps on the dock?

I noticed it sometimes happened when I am on Lion.
I don't use all the Apple software, and some never even opened them to use.
But they end up back on my dock again which is super annoying.

  • OSX Mountain Lion: Running app icons do not appear in the dock

It's almost 2-3 days that I have found when I run an application in OS X Mountain Lion, the application icon does not appear in the dock. In other words, the icons in the dock remain unchanged and no other running application icon appear in the dock. Does anyone else have the same issue?
I appreciate your time to answer my question.

Since you're having issues in multiple accounts I suggest you repair the HD and re-install the OS. ML makes the process pretty painless.
Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First choose DIsk Utility and run Repair Disk. If you find errors run it until all errors are fixed or it reports "Disk cannot be repaired".
Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install in place and won't affect any of your own data.

  • Dock unresponsive, folder icons do not appear

    Hello,
All the following problems happened last night, the computer still works.. but it's slow, and erratic.
-My dock will not appear (it's not set to hiding)
    -all folder icons are invisible
-previously set hot corners do not work
-relaunching finder results in nothing (even though it switches from saying unresponsive, to it being fine)
-If I scroll over the dock menu in finder, the beach ball appears and the only way to get rid of it, is to click on the desktop.
-Running disk utility results in multiple broken permissions involving java, but keeps repeating the same items (multiple runs of repair permissions give the same results. One such permission is this, Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Oops, I must have posted my question before finishing it.
I have restarted it, the same problem occurs. I made another admin account to see if it would work on that, but same results. I also ran Hardware test and it just confirmed that it's a software problem. I have the cd's I just need to find a way to back up my computer. So I was trying to avoid it if possible. Thank you for responding though.

  • My dock would not appear. No change after a restart. After force quitting applications in order to log out all I have now is my account desktop picture and a cursur that moves okay but no icons.

My dock would not appear. Checked preferences, they seemed to be locked. No change after a restart. Tried logging out of account, had to force quit several applications. Now all I have is the account desktop picture and a cusur that works okay. nothing else is on the desktop now. How do I restore?

All I had to do was complain.  I synced my iPhone to the Windows machine, checked the other account at iTunes prompting (where no apps had shown up previously), reconnected the iPad, and 140 apps downloaded including the App Store.  I have no idea why.

  • Menu bar app not appearing in dock.

I have SugarSync running, but I can't see it in the dock, or in the app switcher (the command-tab keyboard shortcut). The only way I can switch to it is with Mission Control, or by moving windows around until I can see and click on SugarSync. In addition to the above problems, it doesn't show up on the left side of the menu bar even when it's the selected window. This all seems to be because it's designated as a "background app", for lack of a better term. I've searched everywhere I can think of for an answer to my problem, but the only results I can find are for people that want apps to leave the dock, not the other way around. How do I change an app's property from background or menu bar app to normal?

    Julien,
Eventually everything went up but I never heard back on my emails. Unfortunately, so long as the contracts are all "in effect" and the app is "ready for sale" all you can do is wait for them to get it up on the store and you don't receive any notice as to when it goes up so you have to keep checking in iTunes. Sometimes it can be found through the search function before it is listed in a category and it may appear in some territories before others. The other way you know it has gone live is when the trend reports begin appearing.
The "add rights" or "request reports" things I think only pertain to music or film but not to the apps so it's just a bug in the software that it mentions it to us.
    Sorry!

  • My iPod frozen on "Do not disconnect" yet it does not appear in iTunes on my computer ?

My iPod seems to be frozen on "Do not disconnect" yet it does not appear in iTunes on my computer ? Eventually I did disconnect. It's remains frozen and shows almost full charge.

I'm having similar problems. Here is exactly what happens to me:
I dock the iPod (I believe it is the 5th gen model, one of the first to play videos). Sometimes it syncs properly sometimes not. It will add songs not on my iPod, but it won't update the play count, last played, etc. The problem was fixed when I updated to a new version of iTunes (I believe it was 7.2 at the time, I could be wrong). So I played it off just being an iTunes issue. Well, with 2 updates since then, it has done it yet again. I've tried to restart the iPod using the menu+select key. It will work to remove the iPod, but it won't help in the future. The only way I can remove the iPod is to click on "Safely Remove Hardware." I know this isn't good for the iPod, but this is the only way that I can get the "Do not disconnect" icon off my iPod. Also, I tried to click "Eject iPod" (I've used this several times in emergency cases and worked wonders) but I get a message saying "iPod is in use by another windows program." I couldn't imagine what program is using my iPod. As far as I know, iTunes is the only program that can use the iPod on my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
