Dock not showing in auto hide

Hi,
My dock is set to auto-hide, and I am using spaces. however my dock does not always show when in put my cursor at the bottom, I have to swap to and from another space to get the dock to show or unhide.
My hot corners are also not working.
any suggestions, spaces bug?
Thanks

could be a bad preference file.
move the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist to the desktop. then restart dock by entering the following in terminal
killall Dock
this will reset your dock to the default and might fix the problem.

  • Dock not showing up intermittently

I first noticed this issue when I downloaded a preview/beta version of Mavericks a few months ago. It was so annoying that I thought it is definitely going to be fixed when the final version is released. However, sadly it is still there: every now and then, when I move the mouse pointer to another display to where it should force the Dock to show up, the Dock won't show up at all. It doesn't even matter which screen has the focus right now either. Can happen just intermittently. Moving the pointer up and down a few times will eventually make the Dock appear.
I also noticed that this can happen wihin my currently active display as well: my Dock is hidden by default, but when I move the mouse pointer to where it should force the Dock show, yeap, nothing happens.
Anybody else experiencing this behavior? This is very annoying.

The picture is becoming more clear...
When I booted up tonight, the dock was gone again. This time, before rebooting, I went into Display prefs and, sure enough, it thought I had two displays. When I clicked on the Detect Displays button, it realized that I only had one display and everything went back to normal.
    So now the question becomes...
Why does OS X occasionally think I have two displays?

  • Dock Not Showing on Second Monitor

Dock is only showing on one of two monitors in setup - when I click to second monitor, it doesn't show up as it has in the past. On Friday after install, it was. Setting somewhere? Any insight is appreciated.

    This could be a bug.
Could you test with Firefox's use of hardware acceleration disabled? There are two way to do that:
    (1) Temporarily run Firefox in its Safe Mode<br>
    (2) Turn off the setting in Firefox's regular mode.
    For #1:
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
''Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run''
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset).
Your non-private windows and tabs should be restored (unless you have Firefox set not to save any history).
    Any difference?
(To return to normal mode, exit Firefox and start it again normally.)
    For #2:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
This takes effect after you exit and start Firefox the next time.

  • Dock not showing at startup and the monitor keeps blinking

    Hello,
I've had my macbook pro for about 2 years - it's a late 2011 model. I have all the latest updates installed and the latest operating system (10.9.2).
A couple of months ago I started having some issues with it - like one of the usb's not working (had to reset SMC) and mail suddenly marking mails as unread (this solved it: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24908508#24908508).
Now, for the second time, when I startup the laptop, the dock won't show and the monitor keeps blinking and the system is very slow. When it happened for the first time I decided to shut down the mac and waited some minutes before starting it up again. The problem didn't show up again. Now, a day later, the same thing is happening. Clearly this problem is not going away. Yesterday, after the problem I went and repaired the disc's permissions, hoping it was something caused by it.
Hoping someone here can help me with this issue, please.
    Update:
So I managed to open finder and move a folder that I had previously downloaded away from the downloads folder (I read that tip from someone in a similar thread) and the dock showed up suddenly and the desktop stopped blinking.
Either way, that doesn't mean the problem won't show up again. So if anyway has any clues has to what should I be doing with my mac (do I need to rebbot it?), since lately I keep having a lot of issues with it...

Ok so now I have this problem pratically everytime I startup the laptop. I know I have to move some files around (it doesn't have to be in the downloads folder, now it happens in the desktop as well) for it to stop. But this is pretty anoying. I'm looking for a permanent solution ofr this problem. Can someone help me, please?

  • Dock not showing all files in folder

I've just encountered a most bizarre thing - it may have happened when I finally updated to 10.4.10 a few days ago, using the combo updater, although I can't be sure.
My Dock appears to be arbitrarily limiting the number of files/applications it will display within a folder on the dock. I normally have both my Applications folder and my Documents folder in the Dock on the right hand side. Suddenly the last 20 or so applications in the alphabetical list of apps is missing (always from the same point) and about half my much larger Documents files are missing - from "N" onwards. I've tried trashing the dock .plist and restarting - which doesn't seem to do a thing, I've repaired my disk, which did have some minor errors, I've repaired permissions numerous times. I've tried some really big files of photos - same problem. They all only show 198 files exactly - that's it. Anything more, no joy.
This is something new - I didn't have this problem before and I can't find anything about this problem anywhere despite much searching. I can certainly try reapplying the combo updater, but wondered if anyone else has had any experience with this or any other suggestions?

I ran the 10.4.10 combo updater again, repaired permissions, repaired and verified the disk, ran Onyx and deleted every cache under the sun, along with the .ds store files, stood on my head in the corner and muttered incantations, created and logged in under another user account and I STILL only get 198 files/items in any folder on the Dock.
    I'm completely stumped.
And to make things even stranger - I have exactly the same problem on my MacBook Pro, also running 10.4.10. It is completely independent of the G5 - I haven't copied ANYTHING from one to the other in weeks.

  • Dock not showing up on right side on startup

I am opening a new question on this topic because the thread by nickbailey looks like it will be closed soon. I appear to be having the same issues as reported in his thread, but I have not been able to resolve them.
I keep my dock on the right side. About every 3rd time I boot OS X, the dock does not launch. I can successfully move it to the bottom or left, but not the right. A reboot resolves it.
I have one 23" cinema display attached to my Mac Pro. To date, I've tried trashing the dock pref file. That did not help. I've looked through the Display prefs and do not see any settings for a 2nd display. I also did not see any display pref files that I could trash.
Does it matter which DVI port I plug the display into?
Any other things I can try?
    Thanks,
    Joe

  • App Store icon in dock not showing available updates

    Hi,
I've just migrated over to a new iMac (which is lovely) but I'm having trouble with the Mac App Store icon in the Dock.
Apparently it is meant to show a small red badge when updates are available for applications bought through the store - but I never see them. If I open the App Store, and click on the [Updates] button I can see a number of available updates listed. I can then install them as normal without any problems.
So there seems to be a minor problem getting the Dock icon to update itself when updates are available.
Does anyone know the solution? Sorry if this has been posted before, but I couldn't find anything in the KnowledgeBase or by searching here - perhaps I don't know the magic words
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike.

All of your apps were migrated?
It is a large file, but you may have a damaged MAS, or may be missing a component to 10.6.7, so the only way to reinstall the MAS and to perhaps fill in any missing pieces to 10.6.7 is to download and manually install the Mac OS X 10.6.7 Update Combo. It is safe to install over your current installation of Mac OS X 10.6.7.

  • Screen flashing between grey and background, dock not showing

I don't know how this happened, but I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion: as soon as I'd logged in, the Dock dissapeared, and the background started flashing between grey and my background. The only way for me to open anything is through Spotlight.
Whenever I try to make an app fullscreen, it glitches halfway through: half the screen is grey, and half the screen flashing. Opening Notification Centre flashes between grey and open and background and closed. Mission Control won't open, and CMD-tab fails to do anything.
Upon inspection in Activity Monitor, there is an abnormal amount of processes named "com.apple.dock.extra": closing them does nothing. One process exists and then doesn't in time to the background flash, and the amount of "dock.extra"s grows and shrinks from 3 to 10.
Can anyone help me with this strange problem?

Open Spotlight and type Terminal. Select the Terminal application.
Type 'sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Dock'. Ensure it looks exactly like that (minus the quotes) and hit enter. Type your password if you have one. Then, type the command 'killall Dock' and hit enter. The dock will terminate and restart, and it will hopefully be returned to its previous state.

  • Menu Bar and Dock not showing up on my 43" TV.....can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance.

The resolution seems a bit low - are you totally SOL or can you navigate enough from the keyboard or mouse to try to change the resolution from the Displays preference pane? (Selecting detect display followed by trying other resolutions might help the mini feed the TV the correct signal.) Also - be sure your HDTV is not "zooming" the picture. My sony has one mode where it cuts of the top and bottom of a "normal" picture to zoom and fill the width of the wide screen without changing the relative DPI of the horizontal/vertical signal. (i.e. The mini might not be the problem at all)
I can walk you through some things if you are handy with the keyboard and flying half-blind if needed.
If you have another mac (or even a PC) and a network it would be best to enable Apple Remote Desktop on the mini and use a VNC client (http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/ or http://www.realvnc.com/ only if you are not using Mac to access the mini.)
That way you can see what you are doing to twiddle with the settings and fix things up.
If that doesn't work, I would reboot the mini and hope it detects the screen better on power up.
(press everything to the left of the => and I'll add notes to the right of the => in case things are not clear what is going on.)
Apple + Tab => to tab through to the finder. If you can't see the apps - simply quit everything and you will be left in the finder. (repeat while holding down the Apple key - tab - tab - q - tab - tab -q repeat until you hear beeps each time you hit the q)
Shift + Apple + U => will bring up the utilities folder
T => will jump to Terminal
Apple + o => will open the terminal
sudo shutdown -r now => will ask you for your password after you hit enter, so type in your log in password, and the mini will reboot.
If you still have problems - we can perhaps think up a way to walk you though changing the settings. I for one will have to look up how to use the accessability (mouse keys, etc...) if needed. Of course - if you have a spare monitor - move to that until you have Remote Desktop working reliably...

  • Dock not showing download and document pop-up lists

All it shows is a blank line where the title should go, and all the file icons have the same plank page.

  • Taskbar keeps disappearing NOT on auto hide

    Hello,
I have viewed other articles similar but neither seem to help. Basically I work at a council and we
have gone about upgrading the rest of the machines from XP to 7, Now we only seem to be having this issue with a few of the machines out of all of them, this issue is upon minimizing anything such as Internet Explorer the full task bar disappears
it just leaves a blank space and the start button, we have made sure it is not set to auto hide.
So far the only remedy we have is to reboot the machine, it might not happen again for a couple of days
but it happens again eventually. It windows explorer does not crash either and the only way to access software open is to use Alt + Tab.
Finally these computers are within quite a big network if this helps any.
Thank you for your help much appreciated.
    Regards

  • Dock not hide in auto mode

I have the pref set to auto hide but the dock doesnt - was told to trash
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
    and restart.
This USED to work but doesnt any more - HONEST!!  Can anybody help me??
    Running latest Mavericks, 10.9.1.

    Ricoricordo,
Before you begin another post, I have a couple of comments/questions.
Can you correlate the question mark to any missing application?
I would recommend that you drag the question mark off of the dock, and reattempt the plist removal.
Any plist files that you drag to the Desktop can be trashed.
If those steps are not successful, Create another User Account and name it Test User. If the Dock works in that new account, I recommend that you follow the checklist in Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption, by Dr. Smoke.
If you are still having the problem after following that checklist, you can post a new question using the "Post New Topic" link on this page.

  • Safari always auto-hide bars, always: also in normal screen mode (not full-screen, which is when autohide happens)

Bookmark bar is auto hidden in fullscreen mode, how to keep same functionality in normal mode out of full-screen?
In full-screen I just have the main toolbar showing, which is how I want it all the time. This or either make "full-screen" a lot better.

Hmm, i think i phrased original question badly, i am looking for auto-hide to be featured in normal window mode as well as fullscreen, and whatever else designers and programmers can dream up and not execute poorly.
I have now disabled all EXTENSIONS and removed all 3rd party bars (google, sharethis, never used nayway;) and as my suspicions confirmed Safari is running much better. I was very suspicious of this when it was added as it seemed like trying to match Firefox, which I also gave up some time ago in place of Chrome as my second browser, although I use Safari for 90%. The extensions i think causes freezing when i had Parallels running a Windows VM at the same time and also other times when not.
The extensions is a bit stupid in my opinion as any niggling, minor feature of a website should be addresses to the website rather than the browser. Where adverts are concerned, well, just use the web less or more specifically!
I think I'm fine with Toolbar/URL-search and bookmark bar, its great - simple and not intrusive. I believe EXTENSIONS introduction gave me some sort of weird mental outlook and would urge Apple to be more careful in bringing in different types of features unnecessarily.

  • Launch pad turns dock auto hide on

On my MacBook Air every time I use launch pad my dock auto hide feature gets turned on. To see my dock again I have to turn auto hide back off. Why is launch pad turning auto hide on? And how do I fix this?

In System Preferences > Dock, do you have "Automatically hide and show the dock" checked?  If so, uncheck it.
