  • Two Dock Questions...

Two quick questions. First, I'm wondering if there is anyway to have certain dock preferences set for different displays. For instance...when I have my Macbook hooked up to my external display, I like the dock to always display on the left of the screen. When I am using my Macbook's screen, I like it to disappear and be at the bottom of the screen. Since my computer can detect when it is connected to the external display, it should be able to make those distinctions. Anyone know how that could work?
Second, I'm wondering how I can get the applications stack back into the dock. I accidentally removed it awhile ago and can't figure out how to get it back.
    Thanks.

This doesn't work. I'm trying to grab the Applications folder from the finder, and when I move it to the dock, the cloud icon stays there. The dock never responds like it is going to accept a new stack. I can get any other folder to appear as a stack, but not the Applications folder. I tried with the applications link that is in the sidebar of the Finder and that is what happened. I also grabbed the Applications folder from the Home folder, and it will allow me to place it in the stack portion of the dock. However, it never operates as a stack. It just opens that folder in the finder. I right clicked on the folder in the dock and "display as stack" is checked, but it still opens as a folder.

  • Universal Dock Question

last night i made the most expensive mouse click of my life by purchasing a 15 inch MBP and a 30 gig iPod video. today at target i picked up a universal dock for iPods in efforts to keep the player safe and secure.
heres my question...i know the macbook pro comes with a remote and i was wondering if that is the same remote used with the dock?
if so, is the remote is interchangable, how can you order the dock to take commands from the remote. i don't really care about the added functionality of a remote, i just want a safe home for my investment, but if you can interchange the remote between devices, more icing on the deliciously, albeit expensive cake.
Thank you so much for your time,
    Michael

    Hi Lyssa,
Right, the iPod doesn't respond to the Menu button. You cannot navigate the menus in any way with the Universal Dock and Apple Remote.
There are some 3rd party docks available that allow you to navigate through the iPod's menus though, such as...

  • Dock question and earbud covers

Well. received my 4GB nano today and good God it's beeeyootiful!!! The packaging is something that belongs in your book library and the nano itself is far from flimsy. 2 questions however:
The connector has these buttons on either side which you must squeeze to disconnect it from the Nano. Having arthritic hands this is just about impossible so I wanted to ask those of you that possess a previous-iPod dock (yes i know the Nano dock is not out yet): does removing the iPod from the dock require any manipulation other than pulling it straight out?
Are the little black earbud covers a necessity or can I do without them?
    Thanks in advance,
    Frank

Your arthritic hands will be glad to hear that the docks are a slip fit.
Just drop the nano in, and slip it out. No awkward buttons to mess with! Plus if you have powered speakers, the docks have a lineout to run your music out of your nano and to the speakers (running music out of the nanoheadphones is noisy)
The black foam is there to keep earwax off the earbuds and to snug up the fit in some people's ears. If the naked buds feel good, pitch the foam. Sometimes the foam slips off the buds when you pull the buds out of your pocket; if you become foam dependent, you'll become a basket case worrying where your foam went!
I agree with you on the packaging, I just got mine yesterday in the mail (first iPod I have had engraved) and was impressed with how small the packaging was. It's going to be a shame to throw out the packaging, but I already have too much clutter!

  • WT310 Screen protection and dock question

I own the WT310 with pen accessory and although i'm very satisfied with it i have two questions
1 - Is it possible to remove the Anti-glare screen protection, as i prefer to have a brighten display and it seems to be just a thin removable layer, will it lead to a malfunction display ?
2 - Is it possible to use the Z10T-A keyboard dock on the WT310 model ?
    Many thanks

    > 1 - Is it possible to remove the Anti-glare screen protection, as i prefer to have a brighten display and it seems to be just a thin removable layer, will it lead to a malfunction display?
Yes, I think you can remove the protection foil and this should not affect the display functionality.
    > 2 - Is it possible to use the Z10T-A keyboard dock on the WT310 model?
The WT310 as well as Portege Z10t Ultrabook support the PA5105E-1PRP tablet dock.

  • USB 3.0 dock question

I have a Thinkpad Edge E530 and recently purchased the Thinkpad USB 3.0 Dock.  My question is how do I set this up so I can close the lid of the laptop and continue to work?
I have a USB keyboard, USB mouse, Network cable, the E530 laptop and monitor connected to the Dock.  I want to be able to close the lid on the laptop and work with the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Is this possible?  Do I just need to change the sleep settings on the laptop?
    Thank you.

  • Docking question

    A couple of questions...
    1. How do I know what generation my iPod is. It is a black and white click wheel 20Gb ipod.
    2. My wife has bought me a Life! Docking Port that says it is designed to use on G4 ipod 20/30Gb nano and mini.
If I open it and try I can't take it back. The connector size looks very similar. Does anyone know if it will work?
    Thanks...

  • Dock Question Mark Icons

I've set up a brand-new Mac Pro tower as a master machine for the purpose of cloning it to other Intel-based Macs in various labs on campus. I've ironed out all the bugs on the master, and it's working exactly as we want it to.
I'm using Mike Bombich's NetRestore 3.3.6 to capture an image from the Mac Pro system. The capture and restore to various Intel iMacs works fine. However, the restored systems don't behave perfectly like on the master machine.
When a new user logs in via LDAP authentication on the iMacs, the dock shows up with lots of question mark icons. However, if that same user logs in the same way on the Mac Pro, everything shows up just as it should.
What would cause this behavior, assuming a perfect clone? Is there a simple solution?

I've confirmed that the _CFURLAliasData strings were the culprits in my case. I took ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and opened it up with the Property List Editor (part of the Xcode tools). Anywhere I found _CFURLAliasData, I deleted that data entry, and saved it.
Since I'm in a lab environment, I needed it in the User Template, so a +sudo cp ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist /System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Library/Preferences+ did the trick (and I made a new image off of that). After that, any LDAP/AD authenticated user that logged on was greeted to a nice dock full of icons, not question marks.
I posted about it here (http://benkreeger.com/blog/2007/09/mac-os-x-10410-breaks-dock-app.html), and that might give more insight (and a few screenshots, too).

  • Bumper case and dock question.

    Hello!
I understand that the Apple bumper and dock don't work together. However, my question is:  There any other alternate for it?
    Thank you,
    Jamie

You can buy a dock extender or dock extension cable.

  • T61 Nvidia internal display vs. dock question

I've read the threads on the Nvidia issue and I'm grasping at straws that my problem may relate to a different component. The internal screen on my T61 blanked out a few weeks ago but both analog and digital outputs are fine on the dock. The backlight is on and on startup the internal screen sometimes works for a few minutes. I've tried substituting a different screen with the same results. Is the Nvidia chip the only likely culprit or does a different chip do the internal/dock display switching?

  • Quick dock question---Using cmd-tab

    Hello,
I am very used to using alt-tab to cycle through all the windows in XP. In XP it would cycle through all the open windows regardless if they were maximized, minimized, etc...
In OS X if you minimize a window cmd-tab wont bring it out from the dock (it will bring the program forward on the top of the screen but the window will remain locked in the dock until you click on it). Is there a keyboard shortcut to bring a minimized window out from the dock?
    Thanks!

Oh yeah, I didn't notice you had a Macbook which means the Fx buttons have special functions. So, you would have to use the sequence fncontrolF3 to focus on the dock.
Note that you can change the settings for the Fx keys in System Preferences->Mouse & Keyboard to make such that they operate like a desktop model. When you do that, the modifier key (fn) is required to get to the special functions like volume, screen brightness, etc.
The window behavior in Mac OS X is not like Windows. The maximize button does not make the window fill the screen such that it takes over the whole thing. You can manually size it full screen by dragging the bottom corner though. This window behavior is bothersome to Windows users, but you'll get used to it. I do recommend using Expose as opposed to trying to make the Dock work like the Taskbar.

  • Dock question:  Can I turn off the expansion/condensing effects of Fan and Grid view?

    Hi!
Can I turn off the Dock menu expansion/condensing animations related to Fan and Grid view (and the condensing effect of List view)?  I find the expansion/condensing animations slow and detracting from an efficient workflow.  I would rather have menus pop up immediately so I can instinctively move the mouse cursor where I can anticipate a file to be located once grid/fan view window launches, rather than have to track the expansion animation with the mouse cursor so that I can select the desired file once it lands in its fixed position.
Is there any known backdoor way to cease these showboating animations?
For the dock to be such a major addition to the Mac OS (when compared to OS 9), I am surprised that there isn't greater customization for it.  Speaking of which, why can't we have the option of having more than one dock, for example?  I would like to have one mounted to the bottom of my screen for applications, but also have one on the left of my screen for commonly-accessed files and folders.
I am all for stock settings that help to streamline features for users as a baseline, but the more tweakable options the better.  I pay a premium for Apple products; who are they to tell me I can have only one dock?!  ;p
I've taken a look at Docker and Deeper, but neither delivered the goods.  Thanks so much!
P.S.  I am still using Snow Leopard.  I haven't heard of new dock options for Lion, so please clarify if I am missing out on a Lion innovation.
    Thanks again!

Take a look at Secrets, OnyX, or Tinker Tools. All of those have various undocumented preference settings that affect various animations.

  • USB Hard Drive & Docking Question

I need an easy way to dock two MacBook airs.  They will be used separately, but I am hoping to use the same monitor, keyboard, and hard drive.
Is there a way to dock a hard drive, so that when unplugging the dock, there is not the unmounting error?  I have little kids, and they will not know how to manually unmount a drive prior to unplugging the USB.
Would I need a powered USB dock?  (Or would I need a powered HD?)  Would that keep the HD running, so no data loss and no error message?
Or is it inevitable that you must always unmount every time?
    Joel

Even if the drives are formatted HFS+, the Windows will be able to read them. The AEBS reads the disk using the proper format and presents the data so that the Windows computers never know the actual drive format.

  • Mac Book Pro docking questions.

I absolutely love this machine. And wonder to myself why I didn't buy a Mac years ago. My one question that I can't to answer myself is: If I purchase an Apple display, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, is there anyway to turn on the laptop without having to open the clamshell? Or will I have to keep my laptop in sleep mode all the time to over come this issue?
    Thanks for your time

Yes...if the computer is sleeping. The OP asked about turning the computer on, not waking it from sleep.
