Dock remains hidden...

I like the feature that keeps the dock hidden on my ibook, but lately, when i move my mouse over the dock, it doesn't show up. After a reboot, the problem is solved, but it's only a matter of time before it's back again. If anyone knows why my dock is remaining hidden, please let me know.
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

For some reason my dock does not auto hide when it is on the left of the screen, it works in all other places though. Try in a different place on the screen. Right now mine is on the top of the screen pinned to the right side.

    jcaz,
Find the com.apple.finder.plist, and the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file in your ~Library/Preferences Folder. Drag these plist files to your Desktop, log out/in or restart.
If unsuccessful, can you duplicate this behavior if you create a new user?
Reinstalling the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo for PPC is an option if the behavior is observed in the new user account.

  • IPhoto Window remains hidden

Hi, my iphoto window has just decided to remain hidden.  I know it is open as it appears when I press the 'F3' button to reveal all of my windows.  Unfortunately, I cannot access it though.  Any ideas people??

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • App store hide/unhide problems: (1) can't "unhide" (2) "hidden" apps don't remain hidden

I've searched hither and yon online for a way to “unhide” apps I’ve hidden in the App Store. The procedures I’ve been able to find, involve choosing “View Account”, logging in, and selecting an item called “Unhide Hidden Apps”. This would seem straightforward enough except that, I find nothing for “Unhide Hidden Apps”. I’ve tried on both my iPad and my iPhone, both running the latest iOS.
Then, to add to the frustration, this. I select an app in the App Store. I slide and select “Hide”. (Say I’m viewing the set “All”.) Then I select “Not on This iPad”. The supposedly “hidden” app is still visible. Okay, what the heck? I slide and select “Hide”. Then I select “All”. Guess what? The app is still visible. I select “Not on This iPad”. The app is still visible. Not fair. :-(

You are right. They do not all show up there - I'm thinking only those that are actually downloaded to the Mac maybe?
If you go to the Quick Links section in the iTunes Store, and click on Apps and All, you should see both the downloaded and the iCloud ones on that list. (make sure you have also click on "All" and not on "Not in My Library".
And if you hover over an app on that list, you will see a little "x" in the top left-hand corner. Clicking on that hides the app. You can hide both apps that are downloaded as well as those still in the cloud. However, it does not remove it from your device. If you did hide it in iTunes, and then also deleted it from your device, it would then be fully "hidden".
Does that make sense? (I still can't figure out how to do the Hide thing on my iPhone.... )

  • Do tracks of files/pictures/etc. remain hidden inside the iphone after deleting them?

If so, I am deeply concerned. I won't get into the whole location tracking feature but allegedly forensic analysis of the iPhone can reveal what pictures you've had on your iPhone even after deleting them. A few questions:
    - There are many "scanner" apps out there and the idea of a hidden document scan lying there hidden raises concern.
    - Since the battery is NOT user replaceable, does Apple give you a refurbished iPhone with a new battery when you bring in your iPhone for battery replacement? Sensitive files/pictures might still be on it and the idea of getting someone else's iPhone doesn't seem appealing to me. I don't want a scratched iPhone since I've kept mine in a leather case all the time.
    - Does the "erase all content and settings" feature truly erases ALL content of your iPhone? (e.g. does it zero out data?)

    i feel your pain
    this is so infuriating
it's great little app, and so easy to record audio on the fly.
BUT then absolutely impossible to easily transfer them to my desktop.
    infuriating

  • Dock  for Hidden User

When OSX creates accounts on a local machine, it pulls the default set of account folders (/Library, /Pictures, /Music, etc) from /System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/... This is an excellent way to pre-configure new user accounts with specific prefs, etc.
I have created a Guest Account that has the folder in /tmp so it is recreated everytime that the computer is restarted. (As per Create a Guest Account (Optional) exeercise on page 49 of the Directory Services Integration and Administration v10.4 Workbook). I would like to be able to modify the dock so it contains items, Word and PowerPoint, to mention two that are not in the Apple template. I have modified a dock, copied the com.apple.dock.plist to System/Library/User Template/English.lproj in a attempt to accomplish this task. This dock is the template for creating new users and it works but it is not the default when the computer is restarted and the Guest logs in. The dock for the Guest reverts back to the apple template.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

The default dock settings are stored in the actuall dock application. (/System/Library/Core Services/Dock.app)
The preference file is at: (Inside the dock)
    Contents/Resources/English.Iprog/default.plist
So you can change the preferences here BUT it will change the preferences for all new users.
    {{If the changes don't take effect after restart, reset the caches, then try.}}

  • Dock will not show up when hidden

I just recently installed Mountain Lion and now it will not let me use the "automatically hide and show dock" option.
The doc remains hidden until I find another route to make it show up (I usually just swipe three fingers) or it will stay revealed.
    Any advice to fix this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Bouncing icon from hidden dock?

Normally I keep the dock automatically hidden at the bottom of the screen to save screen real estate, but I would like to be able to see the Mail icon bounce when new mail arrives. I do have a rule set up in Mail to bounce the Mail icon when a new message arrives, but when the dock is hidden, the bouncing icon remains invisible. Is there any way to make the bouncing icon visible even when the dock is hidden?

I have never used the bouncing icon rule, but I will see what happens. I just set it for one of my accounts. I have the dock hidden as well.
This is the exact opposite of people who do not want icons bouncing when the dock is hidden, such as software update or other such events.

  • Icon bounce notification problem with hidden dock

Hi: I think this has been reported on macosxhints for the mail app, but I'm seeing it in other applications too. Specifically, I have Adium setup to notify me via a bouncing dock icon on new messages. I also have a hidden dock.
I've noticed that on new messages, initially the dock icon bounce will be visible. But if I mouse over the dock area to unhide + hide the dock, the bouncing will no longer be visible (it is still bouncing, and I can unhide the dock to confirm - just not visible when the dock is hidden anymore). If I click on the dock icon to check my message, any subsequent messages from Adium result in the dock icon bounce not being visible with the dock hidden. Once again, it is bouncing, just not visible.
As described in http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090330170041769, there are certain ways to avoid this, or even to recover from this, but I end up missing my IMs pretty often.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Thank you Barry. I wonder if anyone else has the answer to that question. I have many different view options for different folders, and it would be a pain to have to reset each one of them.

  • Hidden Menu Bar and Dock

Hello - I am working on my family's iMac at home, and one of my family members mentioned how someone must have "pressed something weird" because now either the menu bar at the top of the screen or the dock are hidden, one or the other. If I scroll toward the upward part of the screen then the display shifts down and the menu bar is shown while the dock is hidden. If i scroll toward the bottom of the screen, the exact opposite happens.
I checked in System Preferences and the "Automatically hide and show dock" is NOT checked like I thought might be the case. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
    Thank you!

Your welcome and thank you for the star.

  • Un-hidden dock shows behind, not in front of, mail

My dock is 'hidden' at the bottom of my screen.  Normally, moving the mouse pointer to the bottom causes the dock to un-hide - and for it to be visible in front of all apps that might be visible.  Recently, I've noticed that the dock appears *behind* the main Mail window - in fact, the main mail reader window is always on top.  Even clicking on 'About Mail' brings the 'About Mail' popup up - *behind* the main Mail window.
I suspect I've accidentally clicked something to cause this.  I've searched Mail, Doc, Finder and most of the other Systems pref panels - nothing seems relevant.
    Any ideas?

Perhaps a corrupted Dock preference ....
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Dock.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Dock.plist file to the Trash.
    Reatrt your Mac.

  • Finder Appearing to Relaunch itself, Dock not popping up

I just installed the newest security update on 1/10/2008. After many restarts and a shut down, I still am running into a problem of the Finder appearing to relaunch itself when ask to do normal window function, such as closing a window. I've also noticed this happening when I try to "Get Info" on a file, the animation freezes, and then it looks like the Finder relaunches. Also, when I go to a drop down menu and scroll over actions, such as "Close Window" it does not highlight, and I have to hold my mouse button to keep a drop down menu open. Lastly, my dock is on Auto-Hide, but when I mouse down to bring it up, it remains hidden, so I have to go into settings and turn off Auto-Hide. After it appears, when I rollover each application, it does not bring up the application name. Any comments or advice would be great, thanks.

Sounds like you have more then one issue.
As for the Finder crash, the crash log is the interesting bit of information. Go into /Applications/Utilities/Console.app, click on the "Show Log List" button. In the list that appears, click on ~/Library/Logs->CrashReporter. Copy/paste the contents of the Finder crash log into a reply and we'll see if we can figure out whats going on.

  • THe dock should appear (when hide dock option is enabled) while resizing

    This is a suggestion
When the dock is hidden, and when one tweaks with options regarding it, it remains so. It should transiently appear while the modifications are being made, for easier tweaks.

    Hi tito.is.human,
    Welcome to the forums.
This is a peer to peer forum. If you want to send this suggestion to Apple I would recommend Apple's Feedback Webpage.

  • Dock Disappeared???

I just installed OS 10.5 on a MacBook and the only trouble I have had is with the dock. It is completely gone--I made sure it is not hidden or anything. How can I restore the dock to factory settings and get it to work as normal?
It asked me to replace some content files to change the dock appearance, and the appearance of the dock remained the same. So I then removed the content files. I think I may have accidentally deleted important system files for the dock. Is there any way to restore these files without performing an archive and reinstall of the OS?

It's not that the jpegs themselves are corrupt; rather, the UNIX permissions need to be changed. Click "get info" on the offending file and click the "read" checkbox next to "others,." If you don't know what the file is, mass highlight all the items in your downloads folder and make the change.
