Dock taking up 100% of the cpu

Recently I went crazy partitioning my macbook pro's hard drive for linux and windows partitions and I partitioned so much that I corrupted something on my snow leopard partition. In activity monitor my dock ranges from taking up .2% of the cpu up to 99.6% of the cpu. I tried deleting all the configuration files found in ~/Library/Preferences (i heard doing this solves other problems and it fixed it for about an hour or so). The last option I can think of is to reinstall snow leopard but Im afraid I will loss all my data on snow leopard (linux and windows partitions can be erased if I have to) and I cant do any backups because I don't have a spare hard drive. Can anyone help me?

all kinds of things. search these forums and you'll see a ton of stories of people loosing data while trying to upgrade without backups.
what should i use to backup my system? time machine?
time machine is an option. or you can make a bootable clone using CCCloner or Superduper. there see this link for more backup options

  • Dock taking up 100% of CPU

I'm basically using my mac pro as I received it 3 months ago and four times the machine starting moving at sub-snail speed. Twice when I wasn't running anything at all. I found that the dock was sucking up nearly 100% of the CPU. Could something have gotten corrupted even though I haven't changed any preferences? I fixed this the first time by rebooting the machine and each subsequent time by doing a force quit on the dock. I'd prefer a permanent solution to this if somebody knows it. Thanks.

I am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on all three of my computers. The 13 MacBook Pro was purchased Dec 2009 with Snow Leopard installed. The 17 MacBook Pro and the iMac were upgraded to Snow Leopard mid January 2010. ALL three computers have experienced freezes due to CPU usage levels. Prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard this had not happened. Since the freezes occur on an apparently random basis I could not link it to an activity or an application. Applecare suggested Safe Boot, Reset PRAM--it is hard to say whether there was any impact since Restart clears the condition until next time. I have been leaving Activity Monitor open when I remember to open it, since it is impossible to open Activity Monitor after the freeze has started.
I am posting in this thread since yesterday I started the 17 MacBook Pro while working on my iMac. I started the Activity Monitor but didn't get around to opening any other application for some time. When I attempted to move the cursor I got the spinning beach ball. Activity Monitor showed the Dock at 60-70% cpu utilization. It also showed "activitymonitord" at 53.7%.
I am hoping that this post might bring some suggestions

  • Running 10.8.3 on an Intel iMac 27'. The Finder keeps grabbing over 100% of the CPU which seems to stop me from opening any folders. Only quitting the Finder from Activity monitor resets it to normal. Any ideas?

My Finder keeps grabbing over 100% of the CPU which seems to stop me from opening any folders.
Only quitting the Finder from Activity monitor resets it to normal.
    Any ideas?

Nope, I don't have a "/Users/charon/Library/Mobile Documents" directory, let alone anything underneath it. Is that like an iCloud thing or something?  I tend to avoid the Apple-supplied services when I can (I don't use iTunes either unless I can help it).
As an update, as of about two days later this problem seems to have solved itself. Possibly sleeping and waking did something to it (though that seems unlikely given how many times I rebooted), or else there was just some long-*** kernel process that finally worked itself out.  But my system CPU is back down to normal and the cursor freezes are gone.
    ??? it is a mystery! ???

  • Why does the process Report Crash stay active and take up over 100% of the CPU?

In addition to window-server taking an inordinate amount of CPU, I am seeing that the process "Report Crash" is sucking up 102% of the CPU and occasionally goes down to 90%.  ***?  What IS Apple doing these days?  Their products are getting worse and worse!

Select that process and kill it in Activity Monitor, see if it comes back.

  • IMac using 100% of the CPU, but no processes in Activity Monitor show usage over 3%. What's going on?

This iMac is about 5 years old. It has the 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 2GB RAM, and is running 10.8.5. After rebooting the machine, CPU usage is low. After about 30 seconds, when using Activity Monitor, CPU usage bumps up to 100% and stays there without budging. When viewing the CPU tab near the botom, % User is about 95+%, and % System makes up the other 5%. They change slightly every second. The problem is, if I sort my Processes by % CPU, the largest user is Activity Monitor with around 2.3%. Everything else is at 0.0%. So there's something weird going on causing the CPU to max out and run hot, but I can't figure out what's causing it. Checking for applications to force quit doesn't show any issues, and repairing permissions doesn't do anything. Is there any way to figure out what's going on? I read about how to reset the System Management Controller, is this something I should do? Thank you for ANY help, it's driving me crazy!
EDIT: I figured it out! Browsing All Processes, I'm running a folding@home program, but I thought I uninstalled it! The process is called FahCore_a4. Is there any way to prevent it from showing up on boot? I want to get rid of it but I deleted the applications!

Be certain to check that you are viewing "All Processes" as opposed to "My Processes"

  • Has anyone experienced PluginContainer*32 and FlashplayerPlugin 12-0-0-70*32 taking over 60% of the CPU after 2 minutes playing some youtube videos.

I have a 64 bit pc but Flash player and plugin container seem to be 32 bit. Is this relevant ?
The CPU goes up to 60% for just these two processes within about 3 minutes of streaming some videos. The system effectively dies until I end one of the processes with task manager.
An example of a video which displays this issue is http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2013/8/31/the-mini-0801-tiny-1080p-gps-car-camera-with-an-lcd-screen.html
Firefox plays the BBC Iplayer videos with no problems but files like the Techmoan above make the CPU go wild and stop the PC within about 3 minutes.
Opera 20 plays the Techmoan video all the way through with no problems.
This points to the problem being in Firefox.
I think that I have the latest Adobe Flash player and the latest Firefox.

    Hey,
Please try to disable hardware acceleration. Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See [[Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems|this article]] for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).
To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:
#Go to this [http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues Adobe Flash Player Help page].
#Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
#Click on '''Settings''' in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
    # Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel. <br/> <br/>[[Image:fpSettings1.PNG]] <br/>
    # Remove the check mark from '''Enable hardware acceleration'''.
    # Click '''Close''' to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
    # Restart Firefox.
This [http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help01.html Flash Player Help - Display Settings page] has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.
Does this solve the problem? Let us know.

  • Ocspd uses 100% of the cpu after upgrafde

After I upgraded my iMac to Mavericks, the ocspd process hogs the cpu according to the activity monitor. I tried using the Key Chain First Aid, repairing permissions, fscking, but nothing helped.

I've seen similar behaviour, was caused by browsing to a samba directory containing many many files from a macosx smb client.
Was more than 30000 files in a folder (images sequence for video work)
No problem on the same directory from a windows client.
It's related with case sensitive stuff, server is processing all the file case combinations.
So, just click on that directory from a maxosx client, and server will eat all his cpu, even if you stop browsing
Could it be your case ?
I've try to setup the server to be case unsensitive, but another problem appear, again only from macosx client : when converting copied file to default case, file is put to recycle bin (samba vfs), no problem from windows client, files are converted to default case without problem.
I'd like to try to force smbclient of mac clients to be case unsensitive, or may be compile latest samba on them too

  • Apple Mobile devices and Itunes is taking up 100% of my CPU and I can not get to the Itunes music store on 10.5

I have installed the 10.5 version of the Apple Itunes app.  Now when I bring it up it takes up one whole CPU and my other CPU is used up by Apple Mobile devices.   I am using Windows XP Service Pack 2.    I have tried uninstalling all Apple products and reinstalling them but with no luck.  Please if anyone has any advice I am all ears...

Thanks, Andrew for your help.  Not sure if you will see this, but I did the above and it said the HD was okay.  Rebooted it and still won't go past login page.  Tried it again and this time typed in the line /sbin/fsck -fy and then it came up and said HD was okay, but said something about being modified.  I once more rebooted, but it still won't get past the login screen.  Besides taking long to reboot, as before, I am able to enter my password, but then it hangs up with the rainbow icon rotating continuously.  Does this mean that the disk is corrupt or partially so, and if so, can you advise how I should proceed?  TIA again.

  • Having tremendous difficulty with the new version of iTunes.  Moving from a playlist to the main music library has iTunes using 100% of the cpu and listed as not responding.  Not sure this new version was ready for release!

OK, issue seems to be when I've selected "Albums" as the view.  Moving to "Songs" is OK.  This problem just appeared with the new release.  Anyone else having difficulty?

well nobody bothered to give me a hint on what to do, maybe because the problems with the new version of iTunes are really a lot, there is an enormous amount of people out there that have all sort of different problems including mine  so I have decided to return to the previous version which works fine and wait untill the apple people come up with a decent product ....

  • Plugin-container.exe takes over and uses 100% of my CPU locking me out and leaving my PC non-functioning. Is this a bug, or a memory leak, in the Firefox software? Can anything be done to fix this problem?

In looking at Windows Task Manager I found that plugin-container.exe was taking over 100% of my CPU and my system was frozen. Is this a memory leak or other bug?

Thank you! I have been having problems with Adobe Flash since downloading the new 11.1 version. I will download it again and reinstall it, hopefully that will correct the problem.

  • Mail consumes 100% of my CPU power

Thats at least my theory. Activity viewer shows that something called osascript takes 48% of the CPU and kernel_tasks takes the rest. system together ends up between 90-100% of the CPU. When I look for parent processes for osascript I end up in kernel_taskes so I think the osa is responsibel for the hole ting. When I start up maill.app it looks like osascript starts up.
This is a crosspost because I think this now is a mail problem. But I realy dont know.
Dont know what to do and this makes computer pretty much useless. Fan full speed all the time.

  • Java Process Consuming 100% of Server CPU

    Hi,
We have a new instance of CQ5 (version 5.4) running on a Windows 2003 SP2 Server. For some reason, which we can't determine, after a period of time a Java process on the system begins to consume 100% of the CPU and the system becomes totally unresponsive. Has anyone seen this before? Is there a fix for this?
    RK

Does the it eventually recover on it's own? It's possible that the JVM is doing full garbage collection.  How big is your max heap size?  I suggest to add some garbage collection debugging in the JVM_OPTS to see if it is Java's garbage collection or not.  Might as well check the heap too, to see if it's running our of memory.
    Example;
    -verbose:gc -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintTenuringDistribution -Xloggc:/tmp/gc.log -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError -XX:HeapDumpPath=/tmp
