Dock won't show up...Can't click anything

I have a 2006 Macbook running Snow Leopard. Just last week my computer booted up to the desktop. All my icons loaded up but the background picture did not and the dock didn't load up. I can click on things but I can't open any files. I can go through my HD and look at files, but if I try to open them, and error pops up. Also after I click anything, the computer goes blue and then after a second it goes back to the normal desktop view. I don't know what to do or what the problem is. Computer was running great up until this point. Any idea the problem?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left handlist. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive has physical problems

  • Macbook boots up, let's me log in, but then I can't click anything or it restarts

This problem just started up 2 days ago, my computer died one night and the next morning when I booted it up, it wasn't working. It will start up fine and bring me to the log in screen, I can log in fine. My desktop loads up and all the files I have on my desktops are all still there, the dock loads up with all my apps (except for itunes , the icon is missing completely and there's just a blank space, when I hover over it it says iTunes). The menu bar usually shows up fine but sometimes its blank and sometimes it doesn't show up at all. Now here's the real problem: whenever I try to open an application, or even open up one of the files on my desktop, the files and dock all disappear for a second and then it all shows back up with an error message : finder quit unexpectedly. Sometimes this message doesn't even show up and everything loads back up, but the blue dot that indicates that an application is running is not next to Finder. so maybe this is a problem with finder? This is kind of an old computer and i use it all the time so I wouldn't be surprised if its finally just dying... The operating system is mountain lion but I'm not sure what number.. I can't look because I can't click on anything without it doing the restarting thing.

Restart the computer and immediately hold down the option key. When the Mac boots there will be two hard drive icons on the screen. Select Recovery and hit return.
The next screen will show this:
    Select Disk Utility and continue.
    In DU do the following:
In the list at the left, select the hard drive. (Be sure to select the name that’s indented to the right in the list, not the disk name at the far left.)
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
When that is done, quit DU and restart the computer in the usual way.

  • Can't click anything in firefox after closing "printer error" dialogue box.

I'm trying to print an important document off the internet in Firefox. I can't try to restart Firefox without losing access to this document but after closing a "printer error" dialogue box I am unable to click anything in Firefox. I can't use "ctrl+p" to print or any of the other keyboard shortcuts. Right-clicking is also not working.
Running task manager doesn't show any tasks other than the one Firefox window and that shows up as "running" so I don't think it's a case of the dialogue box still being open.
I CAN right-click on Firefox on the status bar to open a new window (which works perfectly fine) or to open a new tab in the malfunctioning window (which is frozen as well).

Goto Firefox Menu - File > Exit
    Try in safe mode
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''

  • I can't click anything on the settings..

Ok so I am trying to use my Dazzle Video capture device to stream video using a webcast system but the flash player settings wont allow me to click anything. I need to change the camera. I can right click and open settings but all the options are not clickable... I am actually using the tab key and return to navigate but I don't think it works on drop menus. Help please.

Same Problem, using Windows 7, 64bit, New Dell Inspiron N7010.
Trying to use a cam on a web site.
When adobe setting box appears, mouse does not work, space bar and tab work but
can not change setting in drop down box.  There should be a seperate manager that
can be intergrated into windows or run as a seperate program.. This has happend on
almost every machine I have ever owned... we're talking 12 pc's and laptops, if not
more... I am a high end user, with  29 years of windows experience.....
if you can recreate this on your tech pc's then have one of use do a dump of
everything running and try it or maybe you have the wrong people working on the problem.
It should be easier to find answers to problems by using help, and not have to resort to forums.
Possibly you need a good tech writer....

  • I can't click anything when i start Firefox up...

I've had mozilla firefox for quite a while now and i've never had any trouble until now... when i start firefox up i can do NOTHING i cant write click anything or even use short bcommands. Its just like a picture (with some moving things) that i can't do anything on... Does anyone have a solution? (Btw im on explorer right now and it works just fine)

    Hi Xylax,
I'd try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide ] and the [[Troubleshooting plugins]] article as well.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • I can't print my document from Pages...the Print Button is down behind the Dock...and I can't click it to Print....healp!

I can't print my document from Pages...since the Print Button is lodged behind the Dock...What do I do?

    Hi Judith,
Your Print button should be accessible, of course, but sometimes we can do things to confuse the system and we have to take some action to get out of that situation. This case sometimes arises if we change the resolution of our screen display since opening the app, or if we change the position of something that is set to "stay on top" of the display.
If the Dock is the problem right now, you could Hide it or Move it to a different edge of the display, to get it out of the way. Settings are in System Preferences, Personal, Dock. I usually have my Dock set to automatically Hide itself, so it's never in the way.
You could also try Saving, Closing and reopening Pages and see if that resets the location of the Print Dialog. Or, you could  just hit Return rather than clicking on the button.

  • Direct selection tool won't show the handles when clicking the path.

When I draw a line, no matter if it's done with pen, pencil or brush tool, and try to select a point with the direct selection tool, it won't make a selection, I can't get the handles activated. They don't show at all. It only shows the line transform handle. This happens only in one certain file. When I open a different file or create a new one, the problem doesn't exist.

    Acca,
    Ctrl/Cmd+H.
    It toggles View>Show/Hide Edges.
The key combination Ctrl/Cmd+H is the most vulnerable one, completely surrounded by other key combinations all only waiting to wreck things when you look the other way. Or you may have tried to use one of them, then just (thought you) repeated it when it (seemingly) failed to work the first time.

  • Dock won't show

I have my dock on the "hide" setting, and when i scroll to the bottom of the screen, it jumps up. However, occasionally (and I think it might be related to the uptime of the computer - it might be getting tired) it just won't come up. Suddenly, I will try to access a program from the dock and in vain scroll down multiple times. I'm wondering what the problem is here - it resolves itself after I restart the computer. Is it a bug? Is there something I could do about it? It's simply annoying. A similar thing happens to my Dashboard also, at the same time. I hit the button I've programmed for it, and it won't come up.

    Hi,
Have the same problem every once in a while on school computers. It seems to happen when switching from classic applications back to os x ones.
    Try throwing aeay the
    com.apple.dashboard.plist
in the preference folder and see if that cures it.

  • THe dock won't show

ok...i just got my macbook yesterday and right know im using my parents laptop
so the dock wont show for any reason.
i checked dock prefrences and everything and still wont show up
i tried opening and application and still wont show up
    help please..

Mine did this a couple of times. Try restarting the Macbook by going to the 'Apple' Symbol on the top toolbar and shutting down then switching back on again. If this doesnt work go to the same apple symbol and select Dock > Turning Hiding On. the go back and select Turn Hiding Off. This may do it, if not restart following this and it should be fine. It seems to be a slight flaw in Leopard but easily fixed generally.

  • Serious imac problem. Won't boot into safe mode, can't click anything when os loads up.

I'm trying to recover my files through the boot camp option on the windows side.  Is there anyway to run something like disk warrior or windows alternative  to repair the partition from the windows side.  I don't think I'm going to be able to get all the files off my computer cause the hard drive is messed up and not working well.   But I'm not completely dead.  Safe mode won't work and I tried the fsck from single user which didn't work either.  Any help would be great, please save my wounded mac!

I didnt change anything.  Literally nothing.  I am typically pretty good with computers but this is kinda driving me crazy.  I didnt mess with anything in disk utility or partition sizes.   I installed boot camp years ago so i dont really understand why i was moved to this forum.  I use it for music production and web surfing.  (windows for a little gaming) but havnt gamed or installed anyting in.. a month or longer.
I am thinking the hdd is having a problem. I never did anything with permissions which i heard could get messed up.  But i cant do anything on the Mac side now just a spinning ball.

  • Brand new iPhone- won't connect, won't launch iTunes, can't do anything (??

Hi everyone. I hope someone can help. I just bought my iPhone today at Apple. I walked by AT&T and had an account set up. So, all was well, until I tried to plug it in. Two things have happened.
First, I can't use the phone. When I plug it in, it does not launch iTunes. I've read in other posts to give it 2 minutes and see if it will. I've also read to launch iTunes myself. I've tried both, and nothing. When I launch iTunes it does not show. It doesn't show on my desktop either, but not sure if it should, since it's new to me.
Specifically, the only thing that happens is, I hear a chirp or a tone and the screen lights up when I connect the USB cable. But all it reads is "Slide for emergency" which I did...I guess that's for an emergency call. An icon appears in the middle showing the usb cable and an arrow pointing to an iTunes icon. I've plugged it in, so not sure whey this is still showing. Also, at the very top it reads "no service" which I guess is due to it not being set up yet. And, there's a little "lock" symbol at the top. That's all I get. I've tried rebooting. Nothing. I've tried repairing permissions, then rebooting. Nothing. I cannot get this thing to connect.
Second, and please hear me out on this one. I've used macs for a while and am generally knowledgeable about them. Also, i've been on this iMac for about 5 months, hooked to the same internet connection. However, for whatever reason, after trying to plug the iPhone in, my internet and web applications have gone to complete crap on me. The WILL NOT connect at high speed...it's unbelievably slow. Insufferable even. Now, i've used this every day and have a really good idea of how it reacts. This is 100% out of the ordinary. As I sit here typing this, this page is STILL trying to complete loading. Something is clearly wrong here. Some pages won't load altogether. I've tried resetting my modem (disconnecting, unplugging). Performance was exactly the same. And, as mentioned, i repaired permissions. So, it's a little more than coincidental to me this happened immediately after running into troubles with my iphone connection. It's like the iphone somehow messed my computer up.
Sorry for the long post. I hope you can understand that I'm very frustrated. It appears that, not only can I not get my phone to work, but it seems i've messed my computer up in the process somehow. Any suggestions? Please. Thanks for your help.

    Hi all-
For anyone reading this, I've solved both problems, and figured i'd post in case it could help anyone else.
First, the iPhone issue. I figured it out by reading another post here. Basically, in the start up items of your "accounts" in system preferences, there's an item called iTunesHelper. I had that unchecked. I can't remember why...I guess b/c I believed I wasn't using it. Anyway, I had read that that could be a problem, so I checked it, rebooted, and low and behold....the iPhone connected and launched iTunes. I'm now up and running. Phew.
As for the internet sluggishness, I don't know what was causing it. But, I just booted from the Leopard dvd, ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions as well as verify disk. Everything checked out. Rebooted on Macintosh HD, and everything was fine. It's as if it never happened. Very weird. But it's fixed.
Hope that maybe helps someone in someway...if your iPhone's not launching iTunes, try checking the iTunesHelper app in your startup items. Worked for me.

  • There is a spot on the right side of my site where you can't click anything.

I think its because there is a composition that i made my menu but Im not sure. Is there a way to fix it? Here is what I mean Home | Josh Blank Photography if you try to click something, it doesn't work. Please help! I just finished today and was hoping to launch it but I ran into this problem and can't launch it until I fix it!

The only way to work around this, other than changing the design of the site, would be to place the menu inside an Accordion widget, as Muse displays them in a different way.
First, add the Accordion Widget to the page. In the options, check the Can Close All setting. This will let you have the default view with the panel collapsed (menu hidden).
Delete two of the widget's default panels.
Delete the default content from the remaining panel.
Remember to remove the Fill and Stroke to make the panel invisible.
Rotate the widget 90º clockwise so the panel opens from right to left.
Drag the existing widget you're using for the menu into the panel's content area – you'll need to remove the trigger you're using to open it currently – and position it where you want it to appear on the page.
Place the image you used for your menu button on the page, then cut it to the clipboard.
Double-click into the Accordion Widget's label area to edit it. Now paste in the button you copied.
Delete the default label text and set the label states' fill and stroke to transparent.
I also recommend you pin the Accordion to top-right, otherwise you risk it disappearing when the browser width is shrunk - as yours currently does.
All being well, you should now have the same set up as you have now but it won't affect the clickable regions of your page.
    I hope this helps.

  • HELP!!!!!! I can't click anything on my computer?

My computer randomly restarted itself and when it came back on, I could not open anything on my desktop. When I click on something a loading thing comes up for a second then goes away. Also my battery icon on the bottom right corner is completely blank. It's just an empty grey color with 3 dashes through it.... When i click on firefox, it does not open but ads just randomly start to play in the background, its really weird...Can somebody please help me with this? Sorry for the short description but I am on my iPod touch right now.

As above in the response. You could have one of millions of viruses. It need to be assessed by a professional. Software issues are not covered by warranty other then the OS itself.
