Docking Display With New W520

I just got a new W520, and I am unable to see the boot-up screen when it is docked.  There is a bitlocker login that I must deal with before Windows will load.  Once windows loads, both monitors function normally.  I've tried both monitors hooked through Digital, one digital and one analog, and switched which ones were analog and digital.  None of these steps have worked.

cliffnic, welcome to the forum,
when the system isn't docked please start it, from a cold start, and immediately press F1 to enter BIOS. When in BIOS if you select the Config menu and then Display you should be able to select the "default boot display". Please set it to the output you wish to display the boot screen on, save your setting and exit BIOS.
After it's booted to windows shutdown and cold start with the system docked.  Let us know what happens.
When the system isn't docked it will automatically default to the internal screen.
Hope this helps

  • Reconnecting to dock station with new T530 creates random colored pixels.

Anyone with a T530 that uses the OFFICIAL and real dockstation have issues with random green and pink pixels on their external monitors when they reattach?.
My T530 has the Nvidia optimus 5400 and the HD4000 Intel chipset which apparnently go back and forth between eachother using the BIOS to save power. I was getting REALLY pissed of with the the Intel HD4000 constantly adjusting the brigthness on my screen so I disabled it and went to discrete Nvidia graphics instead and to hell with the power savings.
Anyone else seen issues with video anamolies with the docktation? If I disconnect the DVI cable and reconnect, it goes away. Do I have a bad dock or laptop?

I experience this as well with my T510 on two different docking stations.
I've simply put up with it for for a few years. Tweaking some display settings helped slightly mitigate the issue.
However, my new dock is a Mini Dock Plus, with dual outputs, which allows me some additional testing possibilities. I've been able to confirm that it is a specific cable/display that is causing the issue, not a specific port on the laptop. Furthermore, dropping the resolution from 1920x1080 to 1680x1050 caused the dots to dissapear completely.
The odd part is that I can't seem to reproduce the issue with another device connected to the same cable/display.
    My remaining troubleshooting steps are:
    * swap out the cable with an alternate (my alternate DVI cable has ferrite cores on each end).
    * If this resolves the issue, I'll add my KVM back in the mix, but not use the apparently bad KVM DVI cables. If it doesn't, then I might have to ditch the KVM, and use input switching on my monitor :/
My specs (but to be honest, my googling has turned up similar issues with older thinkpads and ATI graphics, so I don't think it is exactly dependant on the laptop):
    * T510
    * Nvidia NVS 3100M (with 'nvidia' driver).
    * Mini Dock & Mini Dock Plus w/ USB3.0
    * Fedora 19

  • Acrylic 20" Cinema Display with new MacPro

As I read the posts here, to use the old cinema display with an ADC connector I will need to buy Apple DVI to ADC adapter to connect my 20" cinema display with ADC to the new MacPro?
This new DVI to ADC adapter provides power for the cinema display as I understand which is why it's so expensive whereas when cinema display was connected to my Powermac G5 the power came thru the ADC connection?
    Is this correct?

  • Using a 30" Cinema Display with new Mac Pro

    Hello Everyone:
I just purchased, and waiting to arrive a new 2014 8 core Mac Pro which is an upgrade to my 2009 quad core Mac Pro. I currently use a 30 inch Apple Cinema display which has the DVI connection. I was thinking that I would use a DVI to HDMI adapter and plug the 30" into the HDMI port on the new Mac Pro. I have since heard that people have been having issues with this older monitor getting it to work properly with the new mac pro. some have suggested buy the $99 mini display port to DVI adapter and using that, but I don't believe there is a mini display port on the new mac pro.
I have considered buying a new thunderbolt display because I am assuming that it will have a much better image quality than the older 30 in display but I hate the fact that it's a 27" and I would be giving up the 3" in size. I do a lot of video and audio recording editing and love the extra screen real-estate.  Can anyone confirm a couple of things for me?
    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new mac pro and can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the mach pro?
    Thank you in advance.

    1. Will the 30 inch display work with a new Mac Pro?
    Yes.
Can I use the DVI to HDMI adapter?
Not if you want full resolution.  You need a Mini DisplayPort to dual-link DVI adapter
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter>
It plugs into a Thunderbolt port (and USB port) on the computer.
    2. Does the new Thunderbolt display have a much better image quality than the 30 in display and because its newer, will look that much better with the Mac Pro?
No, it has more pixels (in the vertical direction), but they are spaced a bit more apart, so you don't want  to be as close to the display.

  • Using 2005 30" Cinema display with new mac pro

I will order a new MacPro to replace my Mac Pro 1.1 immediately upon release.  I also have a 30" Cinema Display version 2005.  It's interface with the existing Mac Pro is three cable hookup:  DVI, USB and Firewire 400.  By connecting the Cinema display using a bunch of adaptors, can I make the display work with the new MacPro until a good 4K display is out there?  Alternatively, I'll have to buy a new display from current technology or the few 4k's available today.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Can I use an old Apple Cinema Display with new Mac Mini?

Currently I have an early PowerMac G5 that I bought used recently. It came with an Apple Cinema Display (20", I think - resolution is 1680x1050). The Cinema Display does not have a separate power cord so it must be powered from the PowerMac. My question is this - would I be able to use this monitor with a new Mac Mini - would it be able to power it the same as the PowerMac is currently.
Thanks in advance for your help. This is the first Mac I have owned since a "Fat Mac" many years ago (one of those with the 9" black and white screen).

Are you sure you have a 20" CINEMA display? I have 2x 20" CINEMA displays and both have their own power cord (and power brick). Maybe yours is a STUDIO display??? IDK if STUDIO displays worked that way or not, I've never owned one. Anyways, I have a 20" CINEMA display connected to my new Mac mini (early 2009) via the MiniDVI>DVI adapter and it works fine but is powered through the power cord though. I too have a PowerMac G5 (quad) but my PowerMac cannot power the displays without them being plugged in via their power cords. I am thinking you must have a STUDIO display or maybe there was an earlier version of the CINEMA display that could work that way.... idk. Mine were purchased at the end of 2005 along with the PowerMac G5 (quad).

I have tried restarting my computer,  and redownloading Skype itself. Is there any way to fix this? I know I have the emoticons display on because every one BUT those ones work.

  • Original 23" cinema display and new 23"display with new 8 core MacPro

I am posting this experience to help others with similar questions.
I just upgraded my tower from a dual 2.7 G5 to a new 8 core Mac Pro. I am using 2 23" cinema displays. One is an original first generation display (ADC connector) and the second is a newer 23" aluminum cased display.
The original CD needs to use the ACD to DVI converter and has to be plugged into the DVI port on the Radeon 4870 card. Using the mini-display to DVI convertor will not work. The newer display will work in either port. Both displays now work as they did before...no issues.
I hope this clarifies the situation for others with older displays

Aaah, thanks again Apple! So that's why they modded the videocard, to sell more new displays.
We got a set of fresh mac pro's yesterday, all fitted with the ATI Radeon 4870. I've just fitted it to our (< 1 year old) DELL 2408WFP displays. Unfortunately only the one with the regular DVI connector works. The one connected to the miniDVI does not recognize the monitor at all. (using the ACD to DVI) Not in windows, not in osx. I've tried the updated ATI drivers within windows, this does not do the trick. So thanks Apple, for almost delivering a good piece of hardware and not telling anyone about this problem.
If there's any news other then "buy new displays" i'll post it here.

  • 30in apple display with NEW 2011 macbook pro

    Please Help

Open the Displays pane of System Preferences and select a higher resolution. If it won't let you pick one beyond 1280 by 800, you need to use a dual-link DVI adaptor.

  • Can't connect to Internet with new W520

I have a new ThinkPad W520 (4270).  My ISP is RoadRunner from Time Warner Cable.  The modem is Ubee U10C018.  I am trying to make a direct wired connection using the USB option.  I installed the drivers from the supplied disc, the message says they're installed, but the Device Manager says the USB Cable Modem has no installed drivers.  I tried downloading the driver from the UbeeInteractive web site onto a flash drive using my old computer, which works fine with the aforementioned modem (and which I'm using now to post).  I then reinstalled the driver from the flash drive onto the W520.  Again, the message said the driver had been successfully installed, but the Device Manager says the modem has no installed driver (and "Update Driver" is greyed out).  I spent two hours troubleshooting on the phone with TWC, who then said it wasn't their problem.
    Help, anyone?  Thanks for listening.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi SSDee,
I wanted to use the USB connection for a couple of reasons: 1) No Ethernet cable was supplied with the modem, and 2) I have the modem connected to a USB hub and want to be able to quickly switch between two different laptops using the one USB cable to the hub, which also has a printer and a mouse receiver attached.  (I did try connecting the modem directly to the new laptop without the hub just in case there was a problem with the hub, but that didn't work, either.  It seems clear that this is a driver issue, since everything works fine on the older laptop.)
I am frustrated that no 64-bit drivers seem to be available, and the old drivers say they've been installed, but Device Manager begs to differ...
However, I think at this point I will obtain an Ethernet cable and try it.
    Thanks for the response.

  • Can I use Dual Displays with New Mac Mini (HDMI   Thunderbolt)

    Hello Everyone,
This question may have been asked before... but I just purchased a beautiful new Mac mini and it has an HDMI port in the back and a Thunderbolt port.  I am using a new DELL 23" HDMI monitor that also accepts DVI.   I think I could run another monitor on the Mac Mini, but I don't know which is the best way to go... I purchased a mini-display port to DVI adapter because I heard thunderbolt could accept the mini-display cable.
    1.  Should I purchase the other identical Dell monitor and then run it on Thunderbolt 2 DVI and run it DVI
    2.  Or is there a HDMI splitter that splits the signal into two cables and go that way?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated  Thanks!

I just got the mini server and run a 24" LCD off the HDMI port and a 19" off the displayport (adapter to DVI) and it works a treat there's no need for any splitter.

  • 2 Displays with new Mac Mini (Oct 2014)

Will the new Mac Mini support a mac thunderbolt screen plus an HDMI tv via HDMI outlet?

Yes as longs as the other display is less than 2560X1600.
    The TB display is:
    Resolution: 2560x1440 pixels
    The Mini specs say:
Support for up to two displays at 2560 by 1600 pixels, both at millions of colors.

  • 3K Display with new CC

    Hello there,
is the problem with the not supported scaling resolved? I'm thinking about buying a 3K Lenevo notebook, but if the issues with the unreadable menu items is not resolved, I won't.
    Any input is appreciated,
    Marcus

You need to check in Finder using get info (command-I). Make sure that the destination that you have set in Lightroom has write permissions for you. Also double check that the destination is really in the right place and not trying to write into a root folder on your main hard drive or some such.

  • Does Mail display # of new messages in the dock icon even when app is off?

I'm not sure if it does or not. I like how the new iCal icon in the dock displays the date even when the app isn't open.
I'd love if Mail would display the # of new messages in the dock icon without having to leave the application open all the time.
Otherwise, I just have to stick with Gmail Notifier.
    Thanks for any insight!
    - Jeff

you would have to leave the application opened.
    hope this helps
