Docking station under Linux, T430/W530

Hi all!
How are the docking stations working under Linux? I am thinking especially of the T430 and W530 series. Also, is it possible to run three monitors on only the integrated graphics (HD4000)? I know it is supported on chip level, but does Lenovo enable this feature on the motherboard/docking station, or do I have to run the discrete card to get three monitors?

Unfortunately, no. The VGA outputs seems to be dead, I don't know if they are actually broken or if it's just a driver thingie. However, having two external monitors using nVidia TwinView and a little hack found here: http://blog.gordin.de/post/optimus-guide is possible. Unfortunately, my window manager does not handle TwinView very well, and I am still to find a working solution for running two separate monitors on the digital outputs.

  • X61 dock station and Linux

I have a Thinkpad X61. I bought it without a dock station and I never needed one. Now I need and I want to buy one. It will probably be second hand but that doesn't matter
I want to know if someone used a docking station with Linux distro (Ubuntu or Fedora pref.) I have concerns about network issues.
    Thanks.

I can't specifically give you any guarantees about X61, but I've used several Thinkpads with docking stations under Linux, and so have my colleagues at work, and I've never heard about any problems.
I love docking stations and I think they are well worth it if you can find one cheap.  eBay in the US seems to be full of them, though shipping to Bulgaria might be a different matter...

  • Universal docking station for Lenovo T430 and X201

    Hello,
I'm looking for a universal docking station for both my T430 en my X201 laptop.
It has to have a minimum of 2 usb ports + a HDMI exit to connect to my TV. A displayport (normal or mini) is also ok.
THX in advance for the help.

You would need usb port replicator options, but do note that these devices require usb 3.0 ports. So for your X201 you may need need to get an expresscard usb 3.0 adapter.

  • Dynadock Wireless Docking Station

I am highly disappointed in the Toshiba wireless U Dynadock.  I am using it with my Toshiba laptop which is has been upgraded to Windows 7 and it is very UNRELIABLE.  It undocks and then does not re-dock without a reboot, apparently there is no simple “re-dock button”.  After only one good day where it worked flawlessly it stopped docking all together, even with a reboot.  Technical support is difficult to find and I am returning it and option for a less expensive generic docking station.  Brand compatibility???? Whatever.

Did you find out if any of the toshiba docks works under linux? I just got the z20t and would love to get a dock for it. With laptops getting thinner and with less ports I would think they would support a dock that works on linux.

  • Using two fingerprint readers and a docking station

I'm having a problem with the fingerprint reader when used with an Advanced mini dock station.
I recently aquired an Advanced mini dock and a Lenovo fingerprint keyboard to be used with my T61p and Windows 7 Ultimate.
The problem is that each time the T61p is docked I need to open Windows Device Manager and disable the internal fingerprint reader - and when undocked - the internal fingerprint reader needs to be enabled again.
This is a bit tedious - to say the least.
I've heard from someone that Windows should 'remember' when you enable/disable like this when the machine is docked and undocked, but this doesn't happen here.
Any ideas on how to make Windows automatically switch between the internal fingerprint reader when undocked - and the external fingerprint reader on the Lenovo keyboard - when docked? I know there is no longer machine hardware profiles - like in Win XP. But shouldn't there be some other feature to take care of stuff like this?
    Any hints are welcome.
    TIA.

    Tinkerguy,
    Thank you for the tip.
However, although very informative - it doesn't help in my case. On the Lenovo fingerprint keyboard I'm using the fingerprint reader is an UPEK as well - and for both FPR's the same driver version is loaded.
I forgot to mention that I've already checked that the external FPR has been set to have precedence in BIOS.
I'm now in contact with tech support at UPEK - Let's see if that gives anything.
Question: Is there _anyone_ out there that is successfully using Lenovo's Fingerprint Reader keyboard with a Thinkpad and a docking station under Windows 7?
By successful, I mean without having the necessity to switch the internal fingerprint reader off and on when docking/undocking?
    TIA.

  • Docking Station T430, Graphic interfaces from notebook and docking station usable at once?

    Dear community,
I have a Thinkpad T430 and I want to use two external monitors.
The Thinkpad T430 has just one mini Displayport and I do not want to use the VGA port.
So I thought about buying a docking station.
    But there are several ones.
I just need an additional (Miini)Display or DVI port.
The question is, if I buy a docking station
which provides an addition Mini Display Port or an additional DVI port am I able to use the one from the docking station and the notebook's integrated mini display port?
    Thanks for your help.
    Kind regards

  • W530 docking station supporting 4k monitor?

    Hello,
I have googled for quite a while now without luck. It seems to me that the most advanced docking station for the W530 is the "Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 - 170W" which only supports a maximum resolution of 2560x1600 from its display ports according to this German webpage: http://www.notebooksbilliger.de/lenovo+thinkpad+mini+dock+plus+series+3+usb+30+0a65699.
Anybody know of a docking station for the W530 (244723U model) that supports 4k?
    Regards,
    Håkan

    Hello,
I have this question too. I'm planning to buy Asus 4K monitor and not sure, whether it will work via DP on my docking station.
    Thanks.

  • Thankpad W530 and Docking Station - missing audio device???

I needed to set up a new Thinkpad Minii Dock Plus Series 3/USB with my W530.
First, there was a problem that the computer woldn't "seat" in the docking station.  After calling Lenovo Tech support, and not getting anywhere, I individually pressed the "prongs" that stick up from the docking station.  There was a loud "click" and several small thingies dropped down into the docking station.  After that, the laptop fit right in the way it's supposed to.
I thought I was done, but I noticed an error message on my screen about a device driver error.  The Lenovo Technician had me go to control panel > system > device manager.....   right click on the machine name, and then click on "scan for hardware changes".
Device Manager didn't show any errors, but doing this generated an error box that said:
Device driver software was not successfully installed
    Unidentified device --- device unplugged
High Definition Audio Controller --  ready to use
NVIDIA High Definition Audio ---  ready to use
What do I do now?  Is my docking station defective?  Do I need to plug something into the docking station for this update to complete?  The Lenovo tech had no idea what I might do, other than to call on Monday for "level 2 techs".
As a related issue when I went to update Windows, the following update was to be installed:
NVIDIA Corporation - Audio Device, Other hardware - NVIDIA High Definition Audio      3.9 MB
When I try to install this update, I get:
Code 800F020B  Windows Update encounterd an unknown error
I think all of this is connected, but I don't see how it might have anything to do with the docking station.
As to the docking station, I tested the power connection (green light is on), a USB port (works), the audio out connection (speakers work fine, with no crackling sound), and the Ethernet connection (works).  I haven't yet tried connecting an additional monitor, but that would have nothing to do with audio....

This is the Windows update that will not install:
NVIDIA Corporation - Audio Device, Other hardware - NVIDIA High Definition Audio
    Installation date: ‎5/‎11/‎2013 2:14 PM
    Installation status: Failed
    Error details: Code 800F020B
    Update type: Optional
NVIDIA Corporation Audio Device, Other hardware software update released in July, 2012

Any idea of how the docking station might be causing this?
All updates were done prior to installing the docking station.
Now I have this "problem" (that might be no big deal - I don't understand what's going on.

  • T430 docking stations - which one should I get?

I am getting ready to start a new job that allows me to provide my own laptop.  I want to setup a dock for my T430 with one monitor.
Does anyone have a favorite docking station - it appears that 3 or 4 work. they look the same to me....
I wonder if WIDI works well enough for a second extended monitor.
    Thanks!

Bump - can anyone offer any advice?

  • T430 docking station compatibility

I just ordered a Thinkpad T430 and am considering getting one of the 4337 or 4338 docking stations.  If the T430 were not docked, would any of these docking stations support "docking" my wife's Dell Latitude via a USB cable connection?

There are two versions of the 4337 dock listed on that page. One is listed as compatible, while the other is listed as not including the T430.
You should get the 4337 dock with the usb 3.0 port, but the old 4337 dock is also compatible, but the eSATA port on the dock won't work with your machine.

  • Recommended docking station for T430

Searched Lenovo.com but it has no specific listings for T430. Looking for a dock that would give me a dual monitor setup.
Also, I only have the integrated HD4000 card, can I still get dual video from the dock?
    thanks!

This docking station should be compatible with your T430: ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 It doesn't list the T430 but I am showing it to be compatible.  Your HD4000 card should be able to support two monitors as well.
There are four other docks that should work with the T430:
    • ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 – 4337-10U
    • ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 with USB 3.0 – 4337-15U
    • ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 – 4338-10U
    • ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 – 4338-15U
As I understand it the regular docks have 1 VGA, 1 DVI and 1 DisplayPort while the Plus version has 1 VGA, 2 DVI and 2 DisplayPort. In all cases however you can only use any two of the ports at the same time to drive two external displays. So you would need the Plus version only if you wanted to use 2 of the same port type simultaneously.

  • T430 Docking Station Compatability

    Hi,
Will the T430 work with older docking stations that were designed for the T420?  The Lenovo support website only lists it being compatable with the newer docking stations that include USB 3.0.

Yes it will, but without the benefit of USB 3.0 on the dock.

  • T430 Docking station sleep issues

I have a t430 running Windows 8.  I can set the sleep mode when the T430 is not docked but when the computer is docked, it goes into sleep mode in less than 5 minutes if the computer is being used.
I have tried to adjust the setting and they work when undocked but have no effect when in the docking station.
It is a major problem as I am sometimes connected to the company server and it kicks you out in sleep mode and you have to login again.  The server is not the issue as it does it when not connected to the server also.
