Docs won't open! HELP!

I was working on an indesign document when I had an error message to the effect that 'another user had modified a closed file and that I needed to close down Indesign.' I then closed down indesign and find that 4 documents in the same folder now have an error message as follows.
"Cannot open the file"PLYMOUTH BOOK.indd". Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."
There are no 'other users'. The doc I was working on at the time still works OK. Other documents on the same Ext drive still open OK.
Mac 10.4.11
indesign 5.0. 2

Where did these files come from? I had that happen the other day to some files that had been posted on an FTP site for me. I had to have the originator zip the files and post the zip. Then I was able to open the documents.

  • Appleworks 6 Docs won't open in Pages

We just got the new intel G5, and are wondering if we made a mistake, and should just get an old G5.
I burned a disc of my files from work- Appleworks word processing docs almost exclusively, and all recently converted to Appleworks 6- and they will not open in Pages.
We have Macs at work- all running OS 9.2- and I need to be able to use my files from work at home, or there is little point to having the computer. I'm sure I can import the actual text by using email and cut and paste, but that's a lot more work than I feel should be required.
If anyone could offer any help, it would be much appreciated. At this point, we're inclined to pack the darn thing back in its box and send it back.

If you go with the copy-over method, you need to copy the AppleWorks 6 folder that has been installed on another Mac.
Any version of AppleWorks released after the end of 2001 has an OS X installer, approximately version 6.2.2. Before then, it was an OS 8/9 installer, so it needs Classic, which Intel Macs can't do. For stability in OS X, you should use AppleWorks 6.2.4 or 6.2.9, Definitely not 6.2.7 - very, very, very buggy!
Yes, once you get AppleWorks 6 installed, your files should open. You might want to take a look at a user tip I wrote, AppleWorks 6 won't open my AW 5 files. Even though the title says AppleWorks 5, it applies to moving AppleWorks 6 files from one Mac to another.

  • My iTunes won't open help please! what should I do?

My iTunes won't open, when I try to open it, it says:
"The file 'i Tunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes."
What can I do about this? please help me.

Ps.. My quicktime opens and I can search for music and play it but itunes still wont' open
    thank you kindly.
another couple of preliminary questions aimed at narrowing in on possible culprits.
    (1) do you have Norton Internet Security 2005 installed on the PC?
    (2) reboot the PC. bring up your Task Manager, and click on the "Processes" tab. now try to launch itunes again.
does an "itunes.exe" process appear in the Processes tab? if so, does it persist in there or does it disappear after a few seconds?

  • Itunes won't open - help!

I have been using itunes for 3 months without any problem and for the past week it will not work. The problem I am getting is when I double click the itunes shortcut, sometimes an egg timer is displayed for 10 secs, then nothing. On other times, I manage to get the itunes licensing agreement on screen. I have tried everything to get it working - I've clicked on save, then agree. I've clicked on save, then disagree but itunes still won't open. I have read through the support section on the itunes website and carried out the following:
    1. uninstalled & reinstalled itunes
    2. uninstalled & reinstalled quicktime
    3. run windows clean up to uninstall itunes & quicktime
    4. rebooted PC so many times and wasted so many hours!
I am now at a complete loss at what to do next. I still have the same problem - itunes icon is on desktop but nothing happens when I double click. Can someone please please help?
    Thanks
    Jackie

    hi Jackie!
When I open up Task Manager, itunes application is running and I can't kill the process without rebooting my PC.
usually i associate that "running itunes.exe process That Will Not Die" symptom with nasty version of the NIS 2005 itunes launch suppressions ... but you've got McAfee ...
let's quickly check up on a possibility that can also result in you seeing a running itunes.exe (even though itunes silently fails to launch):
iTunes for Windows doesn't open after upgrading

  • AppleWorks doc won't open in Pages

I have a new iMac Intel with iWork.  My old G3 had AppleWorks 6. I had a crash on the G3, and lost all my data. However, I had most of it backed up to cd's.
When I try to open one of the AW6 doc's, Keyote opens and tells me it can't open the doc. Can someone tell me how to get Pages to open instead of Keynote?
    Thanks,
    Old Granny Lola
iMac4,1   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Intel Core Duo

It doesn't seem to matter if I have Pages open or
not, Keynote still opens with the same message.
Having Pages open makes no difference.
Don't double-click the file to open it. As you've discovered this will cause Keynote to start.
    Instead:
    * start Pages,
    * select its File > Open menu,
    * from the Open dialog box locate an AppleWorks word processing document
    * click the Open button.
    I'm
about ready to go into my HD and trash Keynote to see
if that would help or re-install my AppleWorks 6.
Installing AppleWorks 6 might be a good idea regardless. You will be able to open any AppleWorks documents (Pages only opens word processing documents).
Yesterday, I was able to open some of my AW
documents with Pages, I don't know what happened.
The only thing I did this morning was to change my
password on my machine back to what it was on my old
G3, thinking that may have something to do with not
being able to access the old AW docs with Pages.
This shouldn't have anything to do with the problem. AppleWorks doesn't rely on the Mac OS X user's password for anything.

  • My Safari was updated to 5.1.9 and now it won't open - help!

Safari updated itself a few days ago and was working fine up until this morning.  Now I click on it, it bobs up and down once or twice, but a browser window won't open.  Any suggestions for what I can do to fix it??

Ideally - locate a crash report from Console application... look in Diagnostic & Usage Information - User Diagnostic Reports in the log list on the left & see if there's one for Safari dated today. If so, copy it & paste the contents here.

I put in a CD, but i-tunes won't open, says it stopped unexpectedly and now it's stuck on the error reporting page; won't open. What do I do now?

Press the Eject key on your keyboard.

  • Had to erase hard drive, now pages docs won't open

I had an issue with my Mac and had to erase my hard drive, and start from scratch.  I sent my essential pages documents via e-mail, and re-downloaded them, then re-downloaded pages, but now the documents won't open, with no explanation given.

JPS3, if by any reason there was a problen while uploading the file, I think there is nothing that can be done. Now, if the problem was downloading, you can try redownloading the file again and give it a try.
Any chances you have a copy on iCloud? (sometimes I hit save superfast without knowing it was save at iCloud).
Is this file created in the same version of the Pages you downloaded? or  is it older?
I know that its no good for this case, but next time I recommend you use sites like Box, Dropbox or iCloud.
Hope you can recover your files.

  • My appleworks spreadsheet doc won't open after repeated tries

The apple work file won't open and I get a flag asking if I want to report the problem.
I will verify permissions and fix, but does anyone have any other suggestions?
    Thank you.

Good afternoon Jim. I had the same problem:
"Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its previous cache and needs to quit. Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem the next time it launches."
Thank you very much for your recommendation. It worked great!

  • Word docs won't open

Hi - I am using Tiger 10.4.4 and for some reason now I can't get word docs to open. I just keep getting the little revolving color wheel and I have to force quit. I don't know why this is happening. HELP!!!

    Jeff,
Finally, I found someone who is actually having the same problem I am...!
I kept finding related, but not the same, problems.
I tried the plist suggestion. I can now open Word by launching it from the dock, which often didn't work before, and seem to be able to then open documents from within the program. But as far as opening a Word file on its own, I am having no luck.
When I try to open a document, the Word spash screen appears for probably less than a second before "opening" the document. I get a ghosty document and no toolbars, and before long that rainbow wheel greets me, and I have to force quit.
    Any other suggestions out there?
PS, using Word 2004, version 11.2.3.
I think this problem started after some sort of update installed (either OS or Microsoft), but that was some time ago... couldn't remember that for reference now.
    Thanks,
    Katie
PPS. Don't get mad if I post this in the forum as its own message to try to get some replies. Thanks.

  • Files, icons, docs won't open with double click

Suddenly when I double click, nothing happens. I have to use keyboard commands to open files, icons, docs, folders, etc. Did I inadvertantly set something? I have a Mighty Mouse and this was never a problem before. Thanks
    Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Try cleaning your mouse:
Use a clean lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water. Wipe the ball and the surrounding area, making sure to rotate the ball itself to ensure complete coverage. If the scrolling feels rough or if the scroll ball isn't scrolling up, down, or side-to-side, hold the mouse upside-down and roll the ball vigorously while cleaning it to help dislodge any particles that may have collected on the internal hardware. You can also give it a good (but not too god) whack to dislodge stubborn particles.
Let us know if that helps,
    Miriam

  • Installed iLife08 - now Epson Print CD won't open - HELP!

Hi everyone, not sure where this belongs. I recently installed iLife '08 and have just tried to use Epson Print CD for my R230, and it won't even open. It flashes briefly on the dock then just disappears.
    HELP PLEASE!

There was nothing wrong with the software. All working perfectly fine UNTIL I installed iLife '08. Anyways, after googling various possibilities, I downloaded an application called OnYx, did a dust and clean and all is good! Thanks anyways for trying to help!
PS. My disk utilities didn't do the trick but this other thing did.
