Document heavy website

Hello - I wanted to ask for some advice on how to use the iWeb more efficiently.
I am webmaster of a fanfiction site that naturally involves uploading a LOT of text from submitted stories. So far what Ive been doing is creating pages that will allow for the posting of as much text as possible. This however has its downside:
1) I can only insert about 3500-4000 words on each page
2) If the story is long, this translates into NUMEROUS pages for each story. I have worked out a simple system to keep up with these pages; however, certain categories will get more text than others and this is loading up my iWeb filing quite a bit.
I was wondering if a way to fix this was to upload a document directly into my server files, rather than setting up pages in the iWeb, which I use mainly for the basic structure of the site. The other admins of this site and I would like to make it so we can a) upload more than 4000 wds for a page and b) not have to always go through iWeb to link up a story file. Is it possible to do this?
the website is : www.gaslighthotel.net
Im so used to the 'plug and play'/WYSIWYG aspect of webpage building that actually trying to link things up out of the server files is a bit confusing to me.

Organizing a large website is always a headache.
Judging by your discription, iWeb may have it's limits.
Perhaps a more straitforward website that's easier to handle might be the solution.
You will sacrifice the ease of use, but on the otherhand, you can design pages in iWeb and use the published results as templates in other HTML Editors. It can be done.

You can even use the Pages templates

  • Can't "prepend" a phone number from a text, document or website?

When the Pre recognizes a phone number in a text message, e-mail, document or website, it allows you to click on the number to call it.  Great so far.  Unfortunately, once you do so, and completely arbitrarily, the phone won't let you make any edits of any kind to the phone number except to add or delete from the end of the number.  Every phone I've ever had has allowed me to "prepend" a number (to, for example, add an area code).  More to the point, there is simply no good reason for the Pre to prevent me from making whatever edits I want to the number.  I should be fully able to hold down the orange key and move the cursor anywhere that I want within the number and then make edits, just like I can when I enter a number manually.  Unfortunately, for no apparent good reason, the phone allows no edits of any sort to any number I've clicked on from another source.
Can anybody suggest a workaround, or do is this just one of those bizarre "what were they thinking" type things I have to live with?
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Yeah, and I can also copy and paste the number instead of just clicking on it, but both solutions completely and entirely defeat the whole purpose and convenience of being able to simply click on a number in another source to dial it.  I don't want to have to add numbers I'm going to be calling only once to contacts just to make small changes before I dial them, and then have to delete them from contacts when I'm done.  There is a reason that users can simply click on phone numbers in documents and texts to dial them, and that is convenience.  Not being able to make simple edits kills off some of that convenience.  Workarounds like adding to contacts or cutting and pasting kill almost all of it.

  • Why, all of a sudden, can't I download documents from websites or e-mail attachments when I can do this on Internet Explorer without problems?

When I try to download a spreadsheet, document, or other item from a website, using either run or save, everything freezes up and no download occurs. Or sometimes the item will download in a nonsense jumble of numbers and letters. The same thing happens when I try to download an e-mail attachment from someone. Thing is, I can do all these things from Internet Explorer without problems. This has only happened within the past couple of months. Before that, I had no problems . What's happening?

    That's right; openbox-session worked.

  • Pasting text from another document or website

    Hello,
I'm trialing iWorks '09 and have to admit that while I love Apple, I cannot fathom iWorks. It is not intuitive for those of us used to MS Office, which I readily admit is not necessarily a good thing, but the tutorials and the manual don't even cover the basics. Like cutting and pasting.
Yes, there's nice sections that deal with this topic in the manual and tutorials, none of which deal with real-world situations.
I need to copy some legal boilerplate off a website, paste it into Pages, and manipulate it to suit my purposes. The cut is fairly lenthy, probably 100 lines of text. I create a new Pages document position the cursor and paste. The text comes out beautifully, except that it spills over the first page and into the abyss, not the second page. I have since figured out (no thanks to the manual or tutorials) that in pasting this website material, Pages creates a table, in which one of the rows contains my 100 lines of text. Since it's trying to stick the first row on the first page, it only shows as much text as the page will allow.
OK, I'm cool with that. Kind of. So I try to copy and paste the material that fell off the first page onto the second page. But wait! I can't go spelunking off the first page into the abyss. Pages will not allow me to retrieve the text at the bottom of the cell. Just for giggles. I insert the cursor towards the end of the first page and start typing. When I get to the end of the first page, the cursor also disappears into the void. I know its down there. I know that what I'm typing is actually being inserted. But there is no way to see it, cut it, paste it, or do anything with it.
OK, well at least in know that I'm dealing with a table, although there's nothing that makes this obvious (I only found out by going through the inspector and noticing that the text tools were all greyed out but the table tools were all raring to go). How can I get my leftover text back? I tried to manipulate the number of rows and columns in the table. I tried to split the row and the column (that's probably not the right thing to do, but I was desperate). Nothing works.
The first order problem is that Pages decided for me (though I didn't ask it to) that what I was pasting in was a table. There's no obvious way to get it not to do that. In other words, Pages is doing too much thinking for you, a sin usually more associated with MS. I want a dumber program that will listen to me, not a smart, specialized program that insists on doing things that I don't want it to do. I want my software to do what I want, not to try to make me conform to its conventions, which may not be appropriate to what I am trying to do. Isn't end-user orientation supposed to be what Apple is all about?
The second order problem is that there seems to be no clear instruction for what to do when encountering basic cut-and-paste operations that go awry, like this one. In the real world, people are always going to be cutting from websites, other documents, etc., and these may not fit into the preconceived notions of Pages' developers of what a cut should be. Tough. If Pages can't handle 100 lines of text being pasted in from somewhere else, an absolutely elementary operation, I don't have a good feeling about the iWorks suite as a whole.
I've had conversations with people about similar problems in Numbers. I was trying mightily to be open minded over there, realizing that there are more than two ways to skin a cat, but if Apple wants to move iWorks, it has to meet its clients where they are -- in a world dominated by MS (unfortunately). Like many others, I'm no fan of MS. Apple has always been my choice for computers and hardware. But I can't afford the time of taking a class at my local community college to relearn basic word processing operations I learned 25 years ago on MacWrite and MS Word 2.0. The iWork glossies sure look nice. Wish I could use it. But learning how is going to be an insane time killer and right now I just don't see how it's worth it.

The default behaviour of OSX is to copy and retain the format of copied objects and text.
This makes it possible for example to copy and paste the contents of a web page with all its links and layout. IMHO this should not be the default behaviour, it should be the other way around.
However in your case as you just want the text and have it take on the formatting of where it is being pasted:
+Menu > Edit > Paste and Match Style (command option shift v)+
making sure that the text you are pasting into is the default style. Start a fresh blank document if you like.
It also pays to watch what part of a web page you are copying from. You generally can see if it has selected outside the block of text and sometimes it is necessary to select from the bottom up to avoid gathering in too much formatting.
I think you may enjoy a simpler word processor, that has more than enough features but still remains simple.
    Try my favorite:

  • Won't let me print documents from website link

For this specific website, when I try to print a document it will automatically download it for me but it won't print. I will click on the download and it will open up on Word, but since it is coded it will not show properly. How can I get it to print directly from the print link on the website? I've tried resetting it and it still won't print.

[[Fix printing problems in Firefox]] may help, but if it also happens in other browsers you may want to ask the site developer.

  • Using illustrator for technical documents, heavy text

    Hi,
First, apologies for the total noob question. I'm sort of at a loss.
A technical writing instructor recommended Illustrator to me for creating all of the technical documentation for my company.  Essentially we have documentation in many forms, but mostly already on our website. I'm trying to migrate this material, mostly text, from the site and into an Illustrator document (essentially copying and pasting, formatting later).  Well, I am sure I don't have to tell anyone here, but it's a struggle to get text into an artboard, muchless to the point where it's easy to manipulate.
Can anyone point me in a better direction? I have a lot of books, and have been googling all day, but so far I'm not having any success.  I feel like I should be able to figure this out.
Did we buy the wrong software for the job?
My sincere thanks for what I can only assume is a somewhat irritating post.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Did we buy the wrong software for the job?
For text-intensive documents of more than a few pages length, yes.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Essentially we have documentation in many forms, but mostly already on our website.
LM, this doesn't help. What does that mean? What "forms"? When you say most are "already on our website" do you mean they are merely posted as downloadable links, or are the web pages themselves the documents?
For anyone to advise you correctly, they would need to know what kind of content you are dealing with. Instead of creating guessing games, can you post a link to the website?
For example: Did you know that Adobe Acrobat Pro can automate the creation of PDFs directly from a web site, including functioning links?

    Try a Maggie:
    The Maggie:
    1. Create a new blank document in .docx format
    2. Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last

    3. Copy it.
    4. Paste in the new document.

  • Upload document on websites

Why does iphone not have dedicated space to load documents and upload on websites if necessary I find it very frustrating if I have to upload a document but can only upload from photos

IIn this document app you can actually do a lot with iCloud one drive and Dropbox even. it makes them all work together very easy to upload to one drive from documents. Documents even gives you the option to download files from the web easily. Good luck

  • Saving PDF documents from websites

Previously with Windows XP and Adobe Reader 7, every time when I download a PDF document from the web, the window opened to the last directory I saved into. Since I have acquired a new notebook which runs on Vista (with SP1), I have downloaded Adobe Reader 9. Each time when I download a document, it returns to the root directory. As I classify the documents, I have to click through a series of directories before arriving at the last subdirectory. Instead of an improvement, it was a waste of time. To make things wores, sometimes, the directory name may have slipped my mind and I am lost.
    Please help, thanks,

  • Safari big refresh bug on a heavy website

    Hello
I'm a webdesigner and integrator. One of my last project has a big issue on Safari (works perfectly on Google Chrome, IE, Firefox) : www.agedordujeuvideo.fr
The entrance shows up, but as soon as you slide after the 2d section, everything disappear. If you hover some active link, pictures blink.
The website uses lot of pictures, some quite big, some PNG, JPEG.
Tested on latest Safari version on both a Macbook Pro and a PC running Windows Vista.
    Thank you

So I am taking an Online class this summer.. and I CANNOT use this website:
    http://health.discovery.com/national-body-challenge/interactives/tools/calculato rs/activity-burn-rate.html
and I NEED to use the calculator that is supposed to show up! I have Safari 4 but I want to UNINSTALL it because on my mom's Mac (which has 3.2.1) it shows up!
Summary: This website won't work on Safari 4 and won't work on Firefox, but works on Safari 3.2.1

  • Cannot download form documents from website.

I cannot download a document such as e-filing a court document. It does work on internet explorer but not on Firefox. It just keeps trying to connect but it never does.

The EULA will automatically pop up when you open Adobe Reader for the first time (after installing or updating).

This is when the PDF is created and rendered/previewed from Acrobat Reader and the issue is there for latest acrobat version too.
When you open the PDF in Acrobat Reader and then when you scroll it and if you have more that one page in the PDF, it gives an error saying "There was a problem reading this document (135)".
Is this a known issue in Acobat? Any resolution? Reinstalling acrobat version didn't help.

    Hi Manulak_Tech,
As you are able to view PDF I had provided, the issue seems to be PDF specific.
So when you scroll the PDF and reach to a page where Adobe Reader cannot read it, the error comes. I am sure the problem lies the way PDF was created. Can you describe how the PDF was created?
