Document Icon Question

I have somehow made the documents icon disappear and am unable to make it reappear. Tried to drag it from Applications but no luck. Suggestions?

Yes it has to be right side of Dock.

  • My "Documents" icon in the dock has turned into a question mark.

On my MacBook Air my documents icon has disappeared and turned into a question mark. The icons have also disappeared within my Documents folder and some of the applications folders. Where did they go and how can I get them back?

Where they went is a good question, and not one we can answer without a lot more information.  However, the Dock is pretty resilient at finding things like this if they are accidentally moved into another folder.  So, unfortunately, I'd have to guess that it has been deleted.  If that is the case, your question about getting them back can only be answered with another question: do you have backups?

  • Question concerning document icons changing

after I loaded 10.5.6 the majority of my document icons on my desktop do not show what type of document they are. If I create a folder on my desktop and place the document into the new folder the icons show the kind of file that it is i.e. adobe icons, word icons etc.
Otherwise the icon is an actual tiny preview of the document contents. I should know how to adjust this but I have looked all over and cannot find the setting

    Hi,
I hope I'm understanding you correctly. From your desktop go to the menu bar / view / show view options. you will find settings for icon size and also" show icon preview" check this and all should be back to normal.

  • HELP - document icon

All icons on my palm open pages correctly except "Documents" icon.  When I click on "Documents", the screen goes blank for a couple seconds, then goes to a "Palm" screen with a status bar at the bottom for a few seconds, then the "palm powered" screen shows.  I can get back to the main menu by hitting the 'home' button on the lower left corner, but I cannot open any documents, because the cycle I just described starts again.  I tried resynch to the desk top, I tried a "hard reset" and re-synch, but no luck.  Any ideas out there?

Suggestion:  Open Documents to Go on your computer, then go up to Tools.  Find the "Reinstall Handheld Files" option and select it, then Hotsync.  It should put clean copies of the necessary files onto your device.

  • When I create a New Folder (on the desktop or in Finder), the system uses the Generic Document Icon instead of the Generic Folder Icon. How can I change this back?

When I create a New Folder (on the desktop or in Finder), the system uses the Generic Document Icon instead of the Generic Folder Icon. How can I change this back?
All of a sudden I noticed that most of the folders on my computer were no longer using the folder icon, but the generic document icon. I had to manually change back the icon being used by opening Get Info for each folder and copying and pasting the generic folder icon from some folders that remained unchanged. Now whenever I create a New Folder (right click -> "New Folder"), the icon that shows up is the generic document icon (white page with top right corner turned down). And I have to manually change it so it shows up as a folder in Finder or on my desktop. I don't know why or how this switch happened. All of the folders now on my computer look ok, but I need to change the default so when I create a New Folder it uses the correct icon.
I have also Forced Relaunch of my Finder and rebooted the system. I downloaded Candybar but am not sure what will fix anything, so I haven't proceeded.
Anyone know how I can do this? Thanks.

  • Just updated to 7.0.1 for Mac Snow Leopard, but the icon in my dock isn't the firefox symbol, it's a "document" icon. How can I get the firefox icon in my dock again?

I was given an auto-update message from Firefox, which asked me to restart the program to initiate the update. As soon as Firefox restarted, I got a weird document icon in my dock - in the place where the Firefox icon was moments before. The new update of Firefox seems to be working just fine, but I would like the Firefox icon in my dock and not this unrelated icon. Can you help, please?

I had this problem. Re-instal Firefox. After you drag the Firefox icon in to the Applications icon it is going to ask you if you're sure that you want to replace the version that's there - say yes. Then go down to your dock and remove the Firefox icon - drag it off the dock so it "poof!s" away. You can now put the icon on your dock again from your newly updated version. If that doesn't fix it drag it off the dock again, probably no need to re-update for the third time. Fixed it for me anyway. GL!

  • Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder, Pages App. Recently sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) after iOS5 installed.

Some files in "DOCUMENTS" icon in dock won't open. Get msg saying "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document." Already have Pages 4.1 installed.  Same files will open ok from Finder/Pages App./selected file. Prob not noted until recently after sync'd with ipad2 (Pages) when I installed iOS5. Anyone-- please?!

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

  • Document icon in Finder window differs from Get Info icon

I've been noticing unexpected document icons in Finder windows for quite some time.
This is especially true for PDF files. Since the early days of Mac OS X, I've configured my Macs to open PDF files in Adobe Reader, and I'm accustomed to seeing an Adobe PDF document icon on each PDF file. For some time, I've been seeing different PDF icons, e.g., a document with fuzzy text lines and a black ring binding on the left edge.
I thought this might be a custom icon. But when I do a Get Info on the PDF file, the conventional Adobe PDF icon appears in the Get Info window.
Is this different between the Finder icon and the Get Info icon a bug or a feature?
    -- Ward

It's a feature. Any window that has the View Options set to "Show Icon Preview" will do that. It actually is rather handy in a folder that is set to icon view, with nice BIG icons, you can often see the first page (which is what is displayed) clearly enough to recognize exactly what the file is. In List view it isn't at all helpful, nor is it helpful in those cases where you have icon view set, but the icons are quite small (as is the case on my Desktop, and, I suspect, on most people's Desktops). A pdf that has multiple pages will additionally show the "binder" along the left edge. The Finder is drawing these custom icons on the fly from the contents of the file. The only way to defeat it is to turn of the Show Icon Preview for the folder(s) where you don't want an essentially useless and often counter-productive icon. Do that from the Finder's View menu item, Show View Options. Oh, and every folder has different options for each view. So you can turn it off for List view, but have it turned on for icon view, where it might actually be useful.

  • Document icons showing for aliases, folders with .

After rebuilding launch services database to resolve other issues, I'm now seeing a display glitch as follows:
aliases folders, symlinks to folders, and any folder that has a name ending with a period are showing as a generic 180x180 plist document with an alias arrow in the corner:
As you can see the problem is intermittent. Most have this problem, but some don't.  Issue is the same in the Finder or Path Finder.
The keen among you will notice the folder color.  I replaced system icons in the CoreTypes bundle with those from Mavericks (because I hated the Yosemite blue color).  This could have something to do with the issue but can't really see how, as the problem didn't exist after changing the the system folder icons across many reboots; only after rebuilding launch services database.
The get info from Path Finder shows everything the same:
    Kind: alias
    UTI: com.apple.alias-file
    alias bit: on
    custom icon: false
    type: fdrp
    creator: MACS
    permissions: 644
    owner: (me); group: staff
    open with (oddly): ViewIt
The size is weird. On the incorrect one, it's 300kb, on the correct one it's 1.8MB. Though maybe those are the right sizes considering they are each folders that contain other folders.
For the folders that end in a period:
    kind: folder
    UTI: public.folder
alias bit: off, custom icon: false
permissions: 755, owner (me); group (staff)
    open with (oddly): Path Finder
A similar sort of problem is posted here, but it doesn't seem to help.  I could try trashing ViewIt, but not PathFinder:
Re: Icons for Aliases not Showing up...
    Any ideas?

Seems this was a problem with PlistEdit Pro. (as I should have guessed from the document icon.)  Trashing that app and rebuilding icon cache and rebooting worked.

  • Documents Icon in Sidebar Causes Finder to Crash

    Hi,
I seems to have an issue with my sidebar. Any time I click on the Documents Icon shortcut, the Finder crashes. It will not crash if I have just logged in and click on it once, but after that, it will crash every time. In addition, if I try to open the documents folder after Finder restarts itself, I cannot double click on the documents folder from my Home folder (in list view) without that crashing the Finder as well.
I added a shortcut to a desktop folder I created titled "Current Documents." Is that really capable of screwing the Sidebar up? Repairing disk permissions has not seemed to help, and this issue is a major annoyance. Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks.

    Could be... try this:
    1. Drag all icons off bottom of your Finder sidebar.
    2. In Finder >> Preferences >> Sidebar UNcheck all options.
    3. navigate to ~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Then restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

In query property also,Document link for infoprovider option is checked.

  • Generic document icons for applications in Simple Finder

I have an account setup with Parental Controls and using the Simple Finder. In the My Applications folder of the simple finder, all of the apps show up with the default blank document icon instead of the correct application icon. How do I fix this?

    Hi Warren -
I imagine you already tried this, but just to be sure, did you change the default .tiff app in Finder? Does that change the icon? If so, what happens when you then change the default back to your app?
If the above doesn't help, what happens when you change the Bundle Name and Executable File name of your app, then set the default .tiff app to the "new" app? Not saying this is practical if you've already distributed your app, but it might help to know the result.
Here's some misc info that may give you more ideas: [http://ask.metafilter.com/67832/Changing-filetypes-icons-in-OS-X].
Btw, we have at least two or three experts around here who will probably know exactly what to do. I'm only filling in until one of them shows up. So if none of the above is useful, stay tuned.

  • My Numbers document icons have turned black. Help?

The document icons for my Numbers documents have turned a horizontal-streaked black color. (Kind of like the output from a very defective copy machine.) I have tried resaving the documents both without and with changes, but the icons don't change. Quick Look and Cover Flow work OK, but in the icon view the icons are ugly black. How can I restore the icons to showing the tiny previews of the documents?

    Hello
ctrl + click on the icon of such a file.
In the contextual menu, select "Show Bundle's contents"
You will open the package and see
two subfolders: one named "Contents" and one named "QuickLook"
    Double click this late one.
You will see a jpeg icon entitled "Thumbnail.jpg"
    Double click on it.
If it displays sadly it's that the Thumbnail.jpg file is corrupted. Trash it.
If it displays correctly you are encountering a problem with the system, not with the document.
And alas, in this case, I have no idea.
Trashing the Launch Services databases would be meaningless as you are not trying to display the standard icons but the thumbnail one.

  • Lost my document icon on bottom of screen.

I lost the document icon on the bottom of my screen. How can I get it back?

Click on the house icon in the Finder's sidebar and drag it back from there. In recent Mac OS X versions, you can also drag it back directly from the sidebar.

  • Document icons wont open documents

I am now on Pages version 2.0. The earlier version worked just fine. But with this update, the icon that is produced when I save a document will not open it again later when I double click it. What does happen when you double click on the icon for a file that you created and then saved in Pages 2? Have you tried control clicking the icon and checking to see what program the file is set to open with? If it is not Pages 2 you should set it to that application. By the way, do you still have Pages 1 on your system?
