Document looks different on different computers

I am working on an ai document with a colleague but while it looks good on his computer, when I open it on my computer (from the same location on the server), it looks very grainy. When I print it it also looks fine, though. We have no idea why this should be, we both use the same departmental version of illustrator. Any ideas?

This is a copy directly from illustrator, which looks like it does on my screen. My colleague has gone home now, but below is a copy of another similar document he created, which looks ok on my screen also - and is about the same quality as the first image viewed on his computer. The difference is most obvious on the first panel.

  • Gathering documents from different computers?

Im writing a project on about 100 pages, we are seven students writing it, and we are all contributim by writing from different computers using different writing programs. This means that I have to gather documents with different margins, spacings etc. when im finnishing the projekt.
How can I make all margins, spacing etc. the same? And exactly what should I remember to change, in order to get the document to look like it was written from one computer?

Well my first initial thought would be close to what you are describing, to gather all documents in one document, mark it all and start changeing, but what I want to make sure is to what settings I need to be aware of, are there other than margins, font, spacings? There are different spacings from when you hit enter to a new line to when you press the tabulator to indent a new line. Just clicking on the i button and then the T, alot of different settings comes up concerning different spacings, linings etc.

  • When I paste a Pages document into an email it looks totally different.  Even when I export it too Microsoft Word the Word document looks different.  Apparently this does not happen if you have Word on your computer.  Does anyone have experience?

I need to be able to copy/paste documents into the body of an email and have them look exactly like the original document.  I could always do this on my PC using Microsoft Word.  And all writers submitting work to agents do this.   I just tried it with Apple's Pages and when I pasted it into the body of the email, the document looked totally different . . . no double spacing, no paragraphing  etc.  Even when I exported the document to Word, I copy/pasted it into an email and it looked totally different.  I suspect Apple's version of Word does not perform like the real Word in all circumstances . . . Before I go out and buy Word and put it on my Apple, I would like to know if anyone else has had this issue and how they may have dealt with it.  Thanks.

Drag and drop the file into the email, the formatting will be retained when it is opened by the recipient.

  • PDF document looks different in Adobe Reader 8.1.2 than in Acrobat Standard 6.0.6

When I saved a PDF document in Acrobat Standard 6.0.6 and later opened it using Adobe Reader 8.1.2 it has stray characters (or rather little rectangles taking up the space of one text character) in different places on the page.
Opening the same document again in Acrobat verifies the document still looks like the original, but opening it again in Adobe Reader shows the stray characters or boxes.
What is causing the two programs to render the same document differently on the screen and in printouts?

I mean open first PDF file by mouse double click, then double click another PDF file, both are opened in 2 separate windows.

  • Can my AI documents look different on another computer?

    Hello, everybody.
I made some very simple forms for a woman, consisting of nothing but lines and text on a page, that wound up looking like a grid with text. Each one was perfectly centered on its own page. I sent them to her as pdf files. Before sending them (email) I checked each one in AI to be sure the pdf looked as good as the ai file. She took them to Office Depot to be printed, and they came out very off-center. The OD employee told her it was because of "differences between computers," and she suggested I make them off-center to compensate.
I thought the very purpose of pdf was to make sure that files would look the exact same regardless of the computer they were viewed on. Am I wrong about that?
    Thanks

Thank you, Karen. Will you marry me? : )
Because... I had a pdf document of my own printed at the same OD a couple weeks ago. The employee at that time didn't know how to properly print a pdf and someone else had to show her how. But when I told my "client" about that, she just blew it off and said the employee had assured her I was the problem.
Incidentally, back to my original question about the "differences in computers," aren't pdf files supposed to be exactly the same regardless of what computer they're viewed on?
Thanks again for your help, it was very nice of you to do that.

  • PDF document looks different than when printed

With Acrobat Reader 9, we've noticed that when we print the documents, their is some sort of margin in the printed report, but when we view it on screen in Adobe Acrobat Reader 9, there is no margin.
Is there some setting in Adobe Acrobat Reader that could be causing this?

Change the document so that it prints without scaling.

  • How can I open textedit documents using Word without the document looking like gobbledygook?

Word documents from other computers open in Textedit on my macbook pro (10.6.8).  When I try to open them with Word -- by using "open with" or changing the preference in "get info" or just by dragging the file to the Word icon on my dashboard -- I get a window asking what I want to convert the file from.  No matter what I choose, the documents open as a jumble of symbols.  Is there any way to change this?  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

That's true, and that's what I've been doing, but I use dropbox to work on documents on different computers, and pasting things into new documents makes it more difficult to keep things organized.  I'm hoping there's a way to created a Word document on my macbook air, put it in my dropbox folder, and then open it as a Word document on my macbook pro.  Is that feasible?

  • The chinese signs looks different in the original document compare to when imported in FM

I am using Framemaker 7.2 in Microsoft Office and I am trying to import chinese signs into a document but the signs looks different in the original compare to the FM document. The original document is a Word-file with format Arial Unicode MS and when I import that file it doesn't matter whether I choose to import by "Reformat Using Current Document's Formats" or by "Retain Sourse's Formatting", the signs looks different. Does anyone know how I should do it?

FrameMaker does support Chinese (and Japanese and Korean) for years, but I am not sure how capable the Word Import is.
Your message is unclear to me if the Chinese glyphs just look different (like: FrameMaker uses a different font) or are different (like: This seems to be Chinese but the signs are completely different).
The first can be handled by making sure the same font is selected.
In case of the latter: Make sure you have that Word document in RTF form, you will see far better results then. It also might make a difference if the document is saved to RTF on a Chinese or a Western system, you might want to try both if possible.

  • "This Word document may look different"

Virtually every time I open a Word document in Pages (version 5.2) I get a box saying:
"This Word document may look different. Here's a list of what changed when you opened it in Pages."
That line is followed by something like "The font Calibri isn't available in OS X. It was replaced by Trebuchet MS."
Unfortunately, there is no option to click to keep this from displaying again, so I'm constantly closing these redundant warnings. Is there ANY way I can stop this? It's getting really annoying.

I've yet to have a document with a  problem, and no, I don't need to be reminded EVERY time I open a document that Pages and Windows sometimes use different fonts. I get it. I swear.
Having the option to turn the warnings off would remove a recurring annoyance. I don't see what's wrong with that.
…"yet" being the operative word, history and these forums will not be on your side.
I am sure you are doing what you do and are happy with that, but from my viewpoint it can't be very taxing if you haven't run into at least one issue.

There are 3rd party apps you can get that can help a bit, but I think the main answer is that if you are using templates and graphic rich features of iWeb, the code it generates is pretty complex, a side effect of making it easy to use. All that code gives wiggle room to different browsers and generations of browsers to reproduce it differently.
My approach is just to keep things as simple as possible, and start with blank pages rather than templates. Because I keep my pages streamlined, they're universally compatible.

  • Separate Library for 2 Different Computers

I have 2 different computers that I need to have 2 separate libraries. The problem is my wife and I share the 'My Documents' folder. I have an iPod 60GB, 5G and I'm trying to setup her iPod shuffle. I'd like her to have a separate database/library, but since we both share 'My Documents', I'm having difficulty getting iTunes to look elsewhere for her login. Is there a file outside of the normal preferences that I can change or hardcode for her situation? I've tried pointing her 'My Documents' settings to a directory on her machine, but that's no good because she can't get to her other files then.

Hi - I hope this thread can help me out. Here's the situ... I have a main computer/itunes library at home. Meanwhile I have a work laptop where I've purchased some itunes music which I mainly listen to at work. Now, I want to transfer the music I've purchased from my laptop to my computer at home (and then synch with my ipods). my laptop is not exactly easy to copy files, but I can do it via flash drive onto the home computer (can't figure out how to network the laptop onto home computer). In any event, when I drag the song into the home itunes library, it will show up in the library, but only play when the flash drive is in. As soon as I take the flash drive out, itunes says it can't find the file. Um, help??

  • Time Machine: Backup folder changing size when connected to different computers

Can someone please help me wrap my head around why the size of my Time Machine backup folder changes when connected to different computers? I tried to be as thorough as possible.  Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.
I made a backup of my one laptop (MacBook Pro running 10.6.8) before installing Mavericks.  The backup folder size is 258.56 GB and it is on a 1TB WD external.  There are no other computers backed up in this folder.
Last night, I tried to copy the backup folder to another 1TB WD external and ran into the “you can’t do that” message.  After some researching, I came across articles explaining how Time Machine handles HDs and, in order for me to copy my backup folder, the drive I want to copy the folder to needs to have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected.
Okay, so here is my situation: I have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected and journaling is correct on the drive I want to copy the backup folder to.  So I can continue working on my laptop, I want to use a different computer to copy the backup folder from one HD to the other.  The problem I’m having is each computer I own is showing me a different backup folder size O.o.
    (1) The computer I want to use – a Power Mac G5 Quad running 10.4.11 (non intel) – is showing a backup folder size of 592.7 MB, but the HD shows there is 258 GB being used.  When I drag copy, I only get a 592.7 MB backup folder.  For some reason, the backup folder is the only folder acting this way. I compared other folders from the same and different externals and all the sizes match up perfectly no matter the computer they were connected to. How is this possible?
    (2) My second option - Mac Pro (early 2009) running 10.9.4 – is showing a 256.15 GB backup folder size.  Very close, but not 258.56 GB.
    (3) My last option is to use the computer I’m trying to stay away from, the MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.  This is the computer I backed up and is showing me the correct folder size = 258.56GB.  As I mentioned, I'd like to work on my laptop while copying the backup folder using one of my other computers.
I am able to drag and drop from each computer, but the folder size depends on the computer I’m using.  I don’t understand why I can't do a simple drag and drop of a 258 GB folder.
    Many thanks!!

The directory files that you are seeing are not real. They are links to the actual backup files that are stored in a hidden directory on the drive. If you were to look at the same drive on a pc, you would see the folders and you would a list files that are in the folders but the files would all be 0 byte files and Windows will tell you the file is empty because there is nothing there but a link which Windows does not understand.
So the point is you can't just copy the backupd files. The best solution that I know of (and maybe someone else will chime in) for copying them is to mirror the drive with something like Carbon Copy or some other program.

  • HT1364 I used these instructions to move my i-tunes library to the external hard drive that two different home pc's access. My playlists do not show on both Is it possible to have one i-pod synch amid two different computers that use the same library?

I have a sole i-pod and two pc's, used the instructions for "iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder" in the hope that I could synch my one i-pod between two different computers that are sharing the same library. Is it possible to have two seperate computers that only share an external hard drive (one wireless, one not) ? When I am looking at a shared library should it appear the same on both machines (ie: playlists/ purchased list etc)?

If it is moved correctly, playlists will display on both computers and it should be possible.
    Close iTunes.
    Hold <SHIFT> and launch iTunes.
When prompted to create a new or open an existing iTunes library point iTunes to the iTunesLibrary.itl file on the external drive.
The entire library should now show up with all playlists and playcounts.
    Do this on both computers.
Keep in mind that only one computer can access iTunes at a time, otherwise errors will occur when each computer attempts to write to or update the iTunesLibrary.itl file.
Syncing may work seemlessly with both computers, but honestly syncing is designed to work with one and only one computer.

  • Different libraries on different computers, same account?

    Hi,
This might be a dumb question, but . . .
Currently I have all my iTunes files in one library on my eMac. I am getting a new iMac (YAY!) on Tuesday. What I'd LIKE to do is leave all my kids'/wife's iTunes stuff on the eMac, port my stuff over to the iMac— but still buy and manage both with the same account. 'Zat doable?
    Thx

if i am understanding you correctly. Yes you can use the same iTunes account on up to 5 different computers.
On another note if you want easily transfer all of your files have a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable handy for the migration assistant during set up.

This will allow you to transfer you account information your iPhoto library, documents, and all of your applications

  • How do I access my music on two different computers?

I have the latest version of iTunes on my external hard drive, which I thought would make it easier to use iTunes on different computers. I have purchased quite a bit of music and have ripped several CDs, but I can't access any of it when I use my external hard drive with my laptop. I even downloaded iTunes directly onto my external hard drive to avoid this problem, but I can only see everything that I have purchased/downloaded into iTunes when I use the computer that I originally downloaded iTunes onto.
So my basic question is why can't I access everything I have on iTunes when I use my external hard drive with my laptop instead of my desktop computer?
    Thank you in advance!!!!

Mate, I have been having exactly the same problem, but found the answer a page back.......
I have installed latest iTunes onto my external HD but when I copy my music into it (also held on external drive), it gives an error saying not enough space on C:
It seems that although it is setup on the external, it automatically creates the library on C: rather than your external.
So, if you hold down shift whilst launching iTunes, it allows iTunes to look elsewhere to set up a new library.
Do this and choose create new library then select your external drive for the destination and hey presto!!
I am in the process now of having dumped my original music folder into iTunes and it is busy copying all into new library.
Presumably going to have 2 copies of all music once done but my drive is 320gig so no issue and will just delete the original when done.
    Hope this helps.
