Document windows opening under the options bar

Argh! anyone know how to get the windows from NOT opening under the options bar? I have to zoom the window each time so I can access the document bar and it is driving me MAD!!!!See how my top gray document bar is hidden?? If I hit the zoom out then it pops under the control bars.

Probably because both the application bar and tool options bar are not docked, they are free floating in you screenshot.
For example move the application bar up towards the apple menu until you see a thin blue line and then let go and do the same for the tool options bar.

  • Document windows open under Tool Palette

I am running Photoshop 12.0.4 (CS5) on a MacBook Pro and OS 10.6.8.
When I open photos in Photoshop, they always open directly underneath the Tools Palette which I have positioned at the upper left corner of my screen, just below the Options Bar. They seem to be in Cascade mode, so if I open more than three, then the images beyond the third seem to clear the Tools Palette, but I am always forced to move each of the first three images in order to view them fully and work on them.
In previous versions, it seems like the program was always smart enough to place opened images adjacent to, and not obstrcuted by, the Tools Palette.
I've tried to re-position the images and then quit Photoshop to see if it remembers the positioning, as well as many other alternatives, but can't seem to get any other positioning to stick.
Obviously, this is not a huge tragedy, just a minor annoyance, but it never used to happen in earlier versions. How do I fix it? It seems like it should be a very basic setting, but I can't find it.
    Many thanks!

Thanks, Peter. That is an interesting tip and it will move a single image out from underneath the Tools palette (while also enlarging it), but if I open several images at once, then I still need to click toward one of the back images - the first three are the ones that get partially covered by the Tools palette - hit Command-0 and then navigate to the other images sequentially and do the same.
While I'm sure there are keyboard shortcuts to skip to the next image also, it just seems to make more sense for the program to align the images properly in the first place. I've never had a previous version of Photoshop behave this way before. It seems like it must be an easy and obvious fix, I just can't figure it out.
Again, thank you for offering your help. I do appreciate it.

  • New Window Opens Under The Toolbar

When I open a new window, the left side always falls under the toolbar, hiding the red button that closes the window. I think this is something new. I don't remember having to move each window after it opens in the past. Anybody else? Any solutions? Thanks.

Nevermind. I trashed the preferences and that fixed it.

  • New app windows opening Under current ones

so I have this strange issue that just suddenly started happening and it's driving me nuts. this only seems to happen when I open applications, never folders, and it does it to ALL applications, so I know it's a system problem. the issue is this: say I've opened FireFox and now decide to open System Preferences. when I click on the System Preferences icon, it appears that nothing has happened, when in fact System Preferences HAS opened, only the Sys Pref window opens UNDER the FireFox window. unless I'm going nuts I seem to remember that all apps opened their new windows on TOP of all other windows. the same thing happens if I open Mail, Word, Safari, you name it. I cannot find any logical preference that I might have changed to cause this, and am really sick of having to find new windows after I open an application. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hard to say, except something mucked up in memory, where everything running on the machine is stored and operating. You might want to review what you had done since the restart prior to it happening. If it doesn't come back, running the Apple Hardware Test program, extended tests, wouldn't hurt. If you want to thoroughly check out the installed RAM, download and run Rember.

  • PDF documents not opening in Mozilla at all, PDF option is not there under the options tab applications

    Hi,
Firefox has automatically been "asking me" if I want to save the pdf document instead of showing them in the browser. I have update 22. I have tried to look for the pdf options under the options>applications settings and it doesn't even show up! Is this because I updated? I updated on July 4th and didn't need a pdf until now and this problem showed up. Before, I did not have this problem. PDFs were opening on the browser and I had that pdf option under the application's list.
So I don't know what to do since I don't even have that option on here. What should I do?

Hi thank you for taking the time to reply.
''"You can change the action for Portable Document Format (PDF) from Preview in Firefox to use another application like the Adobe Reader"''
Yes, I have Adobe Reader installed and that's my preffered option. I have recently and manually uninstalled Adobe reader,Reinstalled it again, restarted my computer, and I am still having the same problem. I cannot see the option to preview the pdfs in firefox using adobe. It either uses the the Firefox pdf reader Zeon? or the other option is to Always ask me to download it to my desktop.
I have attached what I see, maybe you can help me based on that. It seems the plugins work well (Figure 2) but only the pdf plugin for adobe to be previewed in firefox is missing (Figure1).
Also, I attempted to re-initialize the plugin database but it still gives me the same option as always.
''"You can set the pdfjs.disabled pref to true on the about:config page to disable the build-in PDF viewer." ''
No, if I set it to "true" then the pdf option under applications disappears. So I have kept it as false. (Figure 3 shows that it goes missing, not the same as in Figure 1)

  • X11 is opening windows with the title bar under the menu bar

Hi, I've just upgraded to Leopard and I use X11 at work to log into a Sun and run Cadence. Some of the windows open with their title bar under the menu bar at the top of the screen making it impossible to move or resize the windows. Is there a way to make it open the windows slightly farther down or is this a bug in X11 that will be fixed soon? Previously with Tiger, I never had this problem.

Great I switched to it shortly after upgrading to 10.5 and as far as what to stick with, i'm not quite sure, but my understanding it's the same open source stuff apple uses and I believe some of the fixes are intended to be used in the future updates, but maybe the xquartz site could fill you in a bit more.

  • The option bar is covering the top of my window

The top of the window that I have opened, is covered by the option bar meaning I can't move that window around.
I don't know how to move this window with the bar there, or how to make a window open so that it isn't covered by this bar.

Windows menu > Workspace > Reset Workspace.   It should tidy up any misplaced toolbars and panels.

  • I need to install iWork 09 so I can open the many pages document files that will NOT open under the new pages 5. Mavericks will not accept an install from my iWork's 09 CD. How do I get around this?

I need to install iWork 09 so I can open the many pages document files that will NOT open under the new pages 5. Mavericks will not accept an install from my iWork's 09 CD. How do I get around this?

Hi, I'm helping StringSinger2 with this problem.
The previously installed version is Pages 3.0.3 (the same as from iWork 08). This version (Pages 3.0.3/iWork 08) is incompatible with Pages 5.
That is why it would be helpful to install iWork 09, which is the version between the two. It will open the older 08 files, and its saved files are readable by the new Pages5.
    SO...
When I try to install iWorks 09 from my retail DVD the error message is "the installer is damaged". (I know the dvd is good, I installed iWorks09 to my laptop today.) Is the "installer" part of the system files? And - If that is damaged is there a patch for that?
    Many Thanks!

I have a stock market program and two of their forms have become stuck under the menu bar.  Closing the program doesnn't help because when it's restarted it returns to the exact same spot and I can't reach the close buttons.  I've tried changing the screen res put that doesn't help.   Any ideas?

Bob ~ Try this: Close the stock market app. Then  menu > System Preferences... > General pane > Check "Close windows when quitting an application":
...Then open, close and re-open the stock market app. If that doesn't help, use the camera icon to post a screenshot so we can see what you're referring to:

Windows will scale applications display or windows will not scale application display depending on how the application is coded.  Photoshop is coded in a way that its display is not scaled by windows.  Photoshop knows about your displays high pixel count not its resolution  so it uses its pixels  however it does not scale its UI to make it usable on your display.  Other application let Windows  scale their display output.   For example Microsoft default for is Surface Pro 3, 216 ppi display is to scale applications display up 150% so the surface pro 3 display which has 2160x1440 pixels a 216 ppi resolution look like at display with the user is using with 1440x960 pixels.  The Application works like the display is 1440x960 and Windows scale those pixels to the displays using the displays  2160x1440 pixels the effectively changing it resolution to 144ppi rather than the actual 216ppi.
The reg update  and external manifest file  effectively tells photoshop its working on such a size display display some number of pixel wide and some number photoshop uses that as the display size  in turn Windows scale those pixels to use the displays 2160x1440 pixels efector lowing its 216ppi resolution.  Photoshop CC 2014 2X UI would be like using windows 200% option applications would be shown the are working on a display 1080x720 instead of the Surface Pro 3 2160x1440. Note that 1080x720 does not meet PS requirement of 1024x768.  Photoshop UI would not fit on the Surface Pro 3 display..
Since you have a 4k display if you have CC 2014 you can use its 2x UI effectively Photoshop will be running on a 1920x1080 display and have half the resolution of you 4K display  3840x2160 pixels four native pixels are use as a single pixel.   1920x1080 pixels exceed PS requirement.

  • New CS5.5 documents always open UNDER floating tools palette!

Long time Indesigner, just upgraded to CS5.5...and so far so good. Except for this one annoyance. IN CS3, which I have been using, a new ocument opens to the immediate right of the floating toolbox in upper left corner of my workspace. But in CS5.5, a new document window goes UNDERNEATH the tools, partially obscuring the rulers and small box in upper left that is used to drag the 0/0 measuring crosshairs to make new measurements. Sure, it is fine each time I open a new doc to (a) resize the window a little smaller so the lower right sizing grabber thingy is visible when I (b) grab the sidebar, pull the doc out a little ways, and then (c) use the lower right sizing grabber thingy to resize the doc window to my workspace so it is now pinned ot the right edge of the floating toobox. BUT SHOULD I REALLY HAVE TO DO THIS EVERY TIME? Is this a new feature of some kind? Opening new docs in CS3 did not require this resizing dance each time, it is just annoying and a step backwards in useability.

MAJOR changes in the user interface between CS3 and CS5/5.5. I'm guessing you are on Mac as Windows users don't have as many options, but there is now something called the Application Frame and with that also comes tabbed windows like in a browser. Using the application frame, with or without tabbed windows, I think, solves this problem, but I'm a Windows user so I'm going on memory from other posts, and many Mac users seem not to like the application frame as it obscures the desktop.
