Documentation for RoboHelp Server 8
The site is behind a version. Is it the same as 7? I know there is one accompanying the exe installation, but I do not have access to a server yet. I am trying to write a business case and to show a proof of concept in a sandbox environment.
Thank you.
JC
Hi. jCoria.
I just looked at the main product page you are referring to. There is a separate heading titled, "Did you know?" This section is meant to introduce other products including Adobe's Technical Communication Suite of which RoboHelp Server 8 is not a part. I agree that the inclusion of Adobe AIR on that page is confusing, though I would not say misleading, if you follow the links provided. From that same page it is mentioned that RH Server 8 supports both WebHelp Pro and FlashHelp Pro as output. It does not support the browser-based AIR Help at this time as I understand it.
I am not an Adobe employee but I can say that as an instructor/consultant I have taught three RoboHelp classes in the past four weeks for major firms where we also installed Adobe RoboHelp Server 8. Two of those clients had previously used the old RoboEngine (the old eHelp/Macromedia version of the server.) The installations went smoothly and the IT people were very happy to see that the new RH Server 8 does not require the IIS server and .NET Framework as in the past (though it is supported if that is desired). I don't use Madcap's Feedback Server, but my understanding is that it does require IIS.
The new Java-based RoboHelp Server 8 uses the free and open-source Apache Tomcat Server with Apache's powerful Lucene Search engine. I found it to be very easy to install and configure. This is the first iteration of the Java-based application and at first I found the documentation to be limited. This is because there are many network architectures and platform technologies that are used around the world. The initial documentation did not cover all combinations. However, there have been many improvements since the initial release. I also found Adobe engineers were most helpful in answering my questions where I hit a gap in the documentation. For example, there has been valuable information on this forum offered by Adobe engineer Tulika Garg along with our peers on this forum including the excellent blog offered by Colum McAndrew.
Another major benefit of this new version is enormous flexibility in restricting access to content. So the author can set up what are called "Areas" which can either be unprotected as normal or set up as protected which requires authentication. It's like having separate websites on the same server without having to buy licenses for each.
Regarding your comment about coming from a Flare environment, I would mention that I have a Flare-to-RoboHelp project converter which you may find useful. It is free and available on my website.
Thanks
John

Documentation for changing Server name
Hi,
I'm looking for documentation for changing server name. Ex. from prod1.domainname.com to prod2.domainname.com. We only change the server name, not the server itself.
Does someone know where I can find it?
Thanks
AndréOn the server side you need to edit two files:
1. ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora
depending on the protocols you are accepting connections on, you need to change the value for HOST = <new server name goes here>
2. ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<SID>.ora
You probably haven't specified this parameter, but if you did specify a value for LOCAL_LISTENER, then change it accordingly.
On the client and server side you need to edit one file
1. ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
Find the service names that refer to the databases that live on the server whose name was changed. If TCP is the protocol being used to connect to these databases, then change the HOST = <new server name goes here> accordingly. -
Hi,
I'm sure it's user error, but ... I'm evaluating Adobe
Technical Communications Sutie (which I've never used before)
because we'd like to publish help files out to a web site with an
existing app running in a .Net environment. I've searched
everywhere, but can't find the documentation that tells me:
1. do or don't I need RoboHelp Server ( I think so, but I'd
like to see why in writing)
2. the actual process to publish out to the web
Can anybody help direct me to where this documentation might
be?
Thanks,
zjillianHey, zjillian and welcome to the forums!
In the case you outline, I don't believe you would need the
RoboHelp Server *necessarily*. It's optional and depends on whether
you would like to use the features provided by the server. You can
read this article that explains more about the server.
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/robohelp/articles/rhserver.html
If you don't need these features, then publishing as plain
"WebHelp" to support a .NET app would be fine. Either method can
use the .NET API (also optional) which is included for free with
RoboHelp along this path on your computer.
C:\Program Files\Adobe\RoboHelp 7.0\CSH API\RoboHelp.NET
The actual process to publish depends on your particular
destination and method. For example, sending them via FTP to a web
server directly, or placing them on a LAN Share drive where the web
administrator can pick them up and place on the web server.
Check out these two online help topics for more details. To
access them, paste these two topics in the online help search box.

Presentation for RoboHelp Server
Has anyone wrote a report on the features of RoboHelp
(server, especially) and what they loved about it?
For example, I know server generates reports...anything out
there that goes into detail on what those reports
actually are?
Whats happening is before my company purchases RoboHelp
Server, they need a presentation from me on its features, what it
can do and its advantages...not why x number of companies
love the product.
So if theres anything out there anyone can point me to that
goes into greater detail on what RoboHelp (or server) can do,
I'd sure appreciate it.
Hope that makes sense :)
Thanks

Advanced Database Setup for RoboHelp Server 8
By default RoboHelp Server 8 gets installed with MS Access as
the database which is suitable for internal use or in a development
environment.
But for production environment, users should use Microsoft
SQL Server/Oracle/SQL Server Express.
Steps to configure oracle/sql server as database –
1) Launch the Config Manager and select File > Open
Context and select the context for which you want to configure the
database.
2) Select radio button "Oracle 9i or higher/Microsoft SQL
Server/SQL Server Express Edition".
3) Create a system DSN using ODBC administrator. To do so,
click on the “ODBC Admin” button. This will launch the
“ODBC Data Source Administrator”. Click on the
“System DSN” tab and then click on “Add”
button and select the driver type depending on the kind of database
your are using. Then give the Database server details and the user
name and password to connect to the database. Press OK.
4) Now select this newly created DSN from the “Select
DSN” drop down.
5) In the username, password fields, specify the username and
password used to create the DSN.
6) Click “Save”.
7) You can verify if RoboHelp Server has all the information
to connect to the database by clicking “Test
Connection”. If connection details are OK, it should show a
dialog box saying “Successfully connected to database”.
8) Close Config Manager using File>Exit.

Adobe Systems.Tulika,
We have been dealing with an issue with Roboserver not searching content. We have gone months trying to fix it and weeks with Adobe tech support. It is critical we get this running. Comments from other threads give me hope you can help. The project works. At one time the server did as well. The files we sent in to Adobe worked fine on their server. We built a new server yesterday, installed the software per instructions, and used new machines to publish the data. Still the Advanced search does not work.
Anything you could do would be appreciated.

RoboHelp Server 8/Active Directory
Hi again,
After moving my install of RoboHelp Server from our Windows Server 2008 R2 server to an older Windows Server 2003 Web Edition box, I was able to get RoboHelp Server talking to SQL Server 2008 through ODBC. Now on to the next problem. I've been trying to configure LDAP authentication against Active Directory, which I can see from a post from NSC_Gillis last August, it looks like there's a problem here.
My setup now consists of:
RoboHelp Server 8 installed on Windows Server 2003 Web Edition with Tomcat 6.0.26 and JRE 1.6.20.
The relevant config section from my <context_name>_server.properties file:
#To use LDAP authentication , uncomment the following...
authtype = ldap
ldapURL = ldap://<subdomain>.<domain>.com:389
usersearchbase = DC=<subdomain>,DC=<domain>,DC=com
rolesearchbase = DC=<subdomain>,DC=<domain>,DC=com
useridkey = uid
rolename = cn
rolesearch = member
DefAdminUid = <UidOfAdmin>
DefAdminPwd =
This yields one of ththe following two results when attempting to subsequently log in to the Web Administrator interface:
Error in LDAP authentication.
javax.naming.AuthenticationException: [LDAP: error code 49 - 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C0903A9, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data 52e, v1db0
Error in LDAP authentication.
javax.naming.AuthenticationException: [LDAP: error code 49 - 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C0903AA, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data 325, v1772
Both of these errors indicate that when RoboHelp Server is attempting ldap_bind(), that it is doing so with bad credentials. When it comes to Active Directory, these credentials have to be in the form of a valid User Principal Name (UPN) and a password, which given the configuration data above, we're never able to provide one. And since I've been able to configure Tomcat itself to use a JNDI Realm for authentication successfully against the same said Active Directory, I have to assume RoboHelp Server is attempting to do an anonoymous ldap_bind() which just won't work with Active Directory.
If someone can provide some guidance at this point, I'd be grateful.
I admit, for a product that is released only for use on the Windows platform, to include LDAP functionality, but then break it so it won't work with Active Directory, or at least to provide little to no guidance/documentation on how to get it to work, seems patience testing at the least.
If we cannot get this resolved, we will be forced to review our future use of the RoboHelp/RoboHelp Server products as a whole.
Thanks,
ScottHi Scott,
RoboHelp Server doesn't do an anoymouse LDAP bind. It uses the ldap user id and password provided in the properties file. Please note that for RoboHelp Server configured with LDAP, "DefAdminUid" property in robohelp_server.properties should be set to a valid LDAP user principal and "DefAdminPwd" property should be set to LDAP password of that user principal.

Tulika. -
Robohelp Server 7.0 vs Robohelp Desktop version
hi there,
We have to write help files for our various products.
What are the major difference in server and desktop version.
Precisely, i am looking for anwers of :
1. can we create independent (does not look for robohelp
server to get data) executable files (.exe, .htm) so that we can
link it to our application software.
2. if we buy RoboHelp Desktop, then what are we MISSING...if
we buy robohelp server

[email protected]Hi Rohit.
RoboHelp 7 client (or desktop) is the tool used to produce
the help documentation output files. It allows numerous output
types to be generated, one of which is Webhelp Pro. Webhelp is
designed to be located on a server, website or intranet. Webhelp
Pro is a version of Webhelp designed specifically for the RoboHelp
7 Server product.
RoboHelp 7 Server takes Webhelp Pro output and publishes it
to a server. It's main advantages are that it allows you to produce
reports of the usage of the help to identify its usefulness. It
also allows you to include standalone files and make them
searchable to the user. This includes PDFs, HTM and MS Office files
but not .EXE files. To be honest I can't see what could usefully be
included in a .EXE file that would be useful to a user of the help.
So in summary, you need a copy of RoboHep 7 to produce your
help output (Webhelp Pro) and a copy of RoboHep 7 Server to publish
the help to the Server and get the usage/search capabilities. If
you don't want these capabilities you can do without RoboHelp 7
Server and still publish Webhelp output to a server.
BTW I'd remove your email address from your post if I was
you. If you don't you'll be offered all sorts of additional
(non-RH) advice involving parts of your anatomy, world peace and
financial well being. -
Is there a manual for Lion Server?
Where can I find detailed documentation for Lion Server?
Piggy-backing but the lack of official documentation amazes me and can be seen as a sign of immature product roll-out. My similar question is below, but unless something has changed I will be looking at 3d party books (yes, in paper).
What is the best overall documentation and guide for using OS X Lion Server? I am using a Mac Mini (2.3/8GB/500GB) and learning the server in preparation for a small office server. I am just using it at home now but going to try multiple user config for iCal, document sharing, remote access, VPN server, print server, mail server, and back-up. I am suprised not only by the presence of so much adverse comment but even more by the apparent lack of solid and readily available documentation from apple--maybe it is there and I have just missed it. I downloaded from apple.com the .pdf
Lion Server

Migrating

Not much there for getting started from scratch. I viewed www.apple.com/macosx/server/ which is more marketing than help. I also went to https://discussions.apple.com/community/servers_enterprise_software/mac_os_x_lio n_server and ended up back here. Is there a good old fashioned paper book that I can sit in the sun with a cup of tea and start to both skim and study?

[email protected]While many of the RoboHelp Server administrative tasks can be performed from the browser-based Web Admin app, certain basic configuration tasks require Configuration Manager. That app is strictly accessed from the server itself. Most folks set up a Windows Remote Desktop Connection to the server desktop and use it that way. Of course this requires getting permissions and access to the server from your desktop.
Is this what you mean?

Cannot publish to Robohelp Server 8
Hello All,
Well let me start by stating that I am a systems administrator but I have had no experience setting up Apache, Tomcat or Robohelp Server.
This bomb has been dropped in my lap cause I am typically the goto guy. The company has an intranet site with a help section that was created and currently resides on a windows 2000 server with RSC 2.3, and RoboEngine 4.1. I have been tasked with setting up new server which will be windows 2003 server 32 bit OS.
Ok. I have followed all the Robohelp Server 8 getting started instructions (page5-6) on how to setup Apache Web Server with the Tomcat servlet for Robohelp server 8. I feel darn near 100% that I have gotten all of that correct. In other words everything tests correctly. I.e., going to http://localhost shows me the proper index.htm. I can access the tomcat manager using default UN and PW.
So I installed Robohelp Server 8 on the F:\Adobe RoboHelp Server 8\robo\server partition. I did create more than one context but am just trying to publish to the default robohelp. I create 3 areas. I do see the context's listed in Tomcat Manager and they all show as started.
I have created a simple project with one help file in Robohelp HTML software. I can generate it and it looks fine. I then configure the the WebHelp Pro Single Source Layout to publish to Robohelp Test Server, server *****WUIT002 (my test server), robohelp adds /robohelp/server automatically. I use admin, admin as username and PW. I attempt to select an area but get the error 'Unable to get area list from server'. Ok. that is not a good sign. But I save and attempt to publish anywho...to no avail(of course). I receive the message "Warning: Failed to publish to "Robohelp Test Server". reason: Unable to connect to the RoboHelp server on *****wuit002. If RoboHelp Server is not being used, generate WebHelp instead. More information on RoboHelp Server is available in the help file.."
I have looked at permissions to the partition and Robohelp server directory. I have basically completely opened them up just to see if that was the issue and I am still having a problem. Help Please. There is so little info out there regarding this product.Hello John,
Thank you for your help. Hopefully you can shed some insight into this for me.
Here is the log directory zipped up.

Subject: Cannot publish to Robohelp Server 8
Oh, one more thing, uvwaves. Regarding your note about, " I attempt to select an area but get the error 'Unable to get area list from server'."
I realize this is disconcerting, but usually not a problem and may be ignore (as you did.) If left blank, the "general" area is assigned by default.
However, the other error, "Warning: Failed to publish to "Robohelp Test Server" is quite another matter and hopefully the logs will help me.
Thanks

I've installed the RoboEngine on my server, but I don't have
any user manuals to guide me on how to use it. I was told by Adobe
that since I'm using RoboHelp X5 they can not get the user manuals
and that RoboHelp 6 does not have RoboEngine.
If I have to, I will upgrade to RoboHelp6. But is there
anything included in RoboHelp6 that would give me the same results
as RoboEngine would? Or would it be better for me to keep RoboHelp
X5 and try to find user manuals to guide me?
And I guess it would hurt to ask, does anyone know where I
can purchase user manuals for RoboHelp X5 and the RoboEngine?
Thanks in advanced...
SusyHi Susy. RoboHelp Server 6 is just the latest version of
RoboEngine. They just renamed the product but it is essentially the
same. You can quite easily stay with RoboEngine. There any number
of knowledge base articles available and John Daigle has a series
of articles also that are well worth a read. Try searching on
"Installing RoboEngine" in the Adobe support site and there are
plenty of links including one to the user guide for RoboHelp Server
6. Even though it is a newer version the same principals
apply. -
Is there documentation for System Image Utility
I appears that the best documentation for SIU is the ToolTips that pop up when you hover your mouse over an item.
Has anyone found proper documentation for Lion Server's System Image Utility?Ed
At the moment there is very little for Lion Server. What little there is, is here:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/lion_server_upgrading_migrating.pdf
https://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/10.7/
It may be safe to assume that some of the Core Services are going to be essentially the same (with a few minor additions) as what went before. This was certainly the case when 10.4 moved to 10.5 and similarly when 10.5 moved to 10.6. In which case the relevant 10.6 Admin Manual should help in some way?
