Advance Replication and Oracle Label Security
Has anyone been able to configure both Advance Replication and Oracle Label Security to work together?
This is currently not supported in Streams. I have an enhancement request in with Oracle for this functionality. This won't be seen in 11g R2 either.
Has anyone done Label Security with Advance Replication? -
Advanced Replication between Oracle XE and 64-bit Oracle Enterprise
hi all,
Currently i have advanced replication working between Oracle-XE and our 32-bit based Oracle 10gR2 Enterprise Server. Will advanced replication work if we moved our Enterprise 10gR2 instance from a 32-bit to a 64-bit?
May be some of you might already be doing this, i just want a confirmation before i give the go ahead.
thanks a lot,
GGHi;

Advanced Replication using Oracle 8i and Linux
Hi,
My name is Sadhana. I am a software engineer. I have a doubt regarding Oracle and Linux. Well, I am involved in developing a customer care and billing solution with back end as Oracle8i (8.1.5)on Linux RH 6.1. I need your guidance is regarding the reliability of using Oracle on Linux as data file servers for critical applications like customer care and billing systems in telecom. The rating and billing engine will also run on linux servers. Only the client machined will have windows 98/NT. It will be helpful if you can throw some light on the replication features of Oracle particularly in Linux. For e.g. is it possible to keep a database server - Oracle on linux and a replication server on linux. Will it behave similarly like other replication servers (windows NT or Solaris etc.)? Is it reliable?
Looking forward for your reply
TIA,
With Best Regards,

1.) Yes it will.
2.) Nobody knows. (Oracle points to May/99...)
3.) Yes, absolutely, since Enterprise Editions are poorly
supported under Oracle/Linux

DataGuard vs Stream / Advanced Replication
hi,
I want to know what is the different between DataGuard and the Oracle 11g Steam or Advanced Replication.
thanks.Oracle Data Guard Physical Standby can be brought up as the primary automatically without human intervention with Fast Start Failover. Setup the data guard broker configuration then start up an observer and then enable fast start failiover. DataGuard also has a level of transparent application failover in 11g, but never set it up or used it yet.
DataGuard is typically utilized to provide protection against a database failure including storage and is typically at a site other then the primary, this allows a level of site protection as well. We data guard is used to provide a level of local protection the storage for the primary and standby is different so that storage protection is also a part of the protection provided by data guard. Also make sure if the standby is in a remote site that the network can handle the trasnaction activity as to not fall too far behind and interrupt you fast start failover capability.
Using SAN storage for the database in a streams or data guard environment is recommended as SAN typically can provide some level of redundancy for the storage automatically with any additional configuration on the database administrators part.
For Oracle streams I do not know of a way to automatically transfer failed sessions, however a TNS connection can be used to connect to the first datbase and if that database is not available it tried a second. This would allow an application to re-connect a failed session and get the second database if there is a failure. The master master would allow you to have 2 active copies of the data at the same time and not require the 2 databases to be exact copies like a physical standby. Again if the 2 streams databases are both local use different storage for each so that a failure in the storage would not make both databases unavailable. Also be careful with streams accross sites as the bandwidth must be able to handle the transaction activity. -
Whats so special with Advanced Replication feature of Oracle
Hi Techies,
I had a long term doubt on this. When the same functionality can be done using triggers and jobs, why should such advanced replication exist to use all those 5-10 packages and all those mess. What other thing in replication does differentiate it from its rival, manual work ie using triggers and jobs.
SivaWhy use Oracle Replication? Where to start?
(1) Re-inventing the wheel is never a good idea. especially when there's a high risk of inventing it square-shaped.
(2) Oracle will support their replication implementation: they won't support yours.
(3) QUERY_REWRITE_ENABLED
(4) efficiency: Oracle's inbuilt kernel code is simply faster than anything we can write
(5) Do you really mean Advanced Replication and not just materialized views?
"all those mess"Obviously you've never had a business requirement that really necessitated replication. It is a messy area. We are maintaining a single view of the data in multiple physical locations: that's not clean. Consider: performance, freshness of data, data integrity, data ownership, conflict resolution. Consider deployment and synchronisation with a workforce of remote, disconnected users. Once you have to really wrestle with those sorts of issues you will come to appreciate the flexibility, robustness and completeness of Oracle's replication tools.
There are so many gotchas in just setting up the replication architecture using Oracle's box of bits that only a mad man would want to add building their own set of low level components into the mix. Now, you may have a very simple replication requirement that could be satisfied with a few triggers and a DBMS_JOB. Are you sure that requirement is fuilly scoped? Furthermore, are you sure that your requirement won't get more complex in the future? And do you really think it will take you less time to knock up some triggers and related database objects that it will do to issue a CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW statement (and maybe a CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW LOG too)?
Oh, and spare a thought for the poor saps that will have to maintain th eapp after you've gone. They'll probably be happier with a standard Oracle implemenation that is well-known well-documented and for which there are training courses.
Life is too short.
Cheers, APC -
Oracle Version for Advanced Replication
Hi all,
When, Advanced Replication first appeared in Oracle Database?
Was it in version: 7, 8i or 9i?????
I' d like to do the same question for materialized view.
I know that in previous releases materialized view was snapshot. So, in wich version of Oracle snapshot was introduced?
I hope somebody help me...Do not use none of them. Conflict resolution will kill you. This is only will works if one side working on one set of tables while other working on other sets of tables. If you do not want to have such hadace use active standby database (11g) to run reports locally, but all changes must happen on primary side.

Implementing replication in Oracle 10&11 Standard Edition
I am implementing an oracle based application which will run under Linux/Oracle 10gr2 standard edition and which will soon be upgraded to Oracle 11g standard edition.
One of the requirements of the application is that a hot standby must be provided. To provide the hot standby, I must implement some sort of replication mechanism, but the nice replication features (data guard, streams, advanced replication, basic replication) are only available with Oracle enterprise edition.
Two questions:
1. It appears that I will be building a home-made replication mechanisms. I am planning on using insert/update/delete triggers and dblinks to trap database updates and propogate them to the standby server. (alternatively, may write them to files as SQL statements and have the second server load the files). Is their a better way to implement replication in Oracle SE. (esp. a feature of Oracle SE that I could be using to do this?).
2. Oracle Advanced and Basic Replication are not shown in the Oracle 11 Editions Description web page which lists the availability of features across the various oracle versions. I assume it is still supported in Oracle 11, but is Oracle Streams now the "best practice" for implementing replication (i.e. instead of advanced replication?)
Thanks in advance,
Werner1) Having database triggers that use a database link is an exceptionally poor way of implementing a hot standby. If the database link goes down, or if the remote database is unavailable, the trigger will generate an exception and the parent transaction will be rolled back. Which means that the system is available only if both databases are available and the network between them is available, which is exactly the opposite of what a hot standby would be expected to provide.
2) You most likely want to set up a manual DataGuard-like setup. Clone the database from one machine to another, keep the standby database in managed recovery mode, and copy archived log files from the primary to the standby periodically. You'll have to script that, of course, but that shouldn't be insurmountable.
3) Basic replication (one-way materialized views) are available in the standard edition, but probably aren't the sort of thing you'd want to use to build a hot standby.

Oracle 10GR2 Installation On Cloud
Hi Exports,
Can anyone give me some knowledge how to Install Oracle 10GR2 on Cloud Server (Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit). as i am very new to install Oracle in Cloud server. I am trying to install it but failed to proceed next after selecting advance installation.
Thanks in advance...A server is a server is a server, whether physical sitting under your desk or in a datacenter, or virtual in "a cloud". The install process is the same as documented in the installation guide.
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15681/toc.htm
Which exact version of 10gR2 ? You will need 10.2.0.4 or later - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/relnotes.102/b15680/toc.htm#CHDFHIEA
Have you met all of the pre-reqs and are you following all of the steps in the Install Guide ? Pl post the last 100 lines from the install log - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15681/ts.htm#i1090466

Generic Connectivity -Oracle(10gR2) to MS SQL server - Creating DSN
Hi,
I am trying to connect Oracle 10gR2(10.2.0.4.0) on linux x86 to MS Sql Server on Windows XP
I am referring the Metalink Note 264567.1 and using DataDirect ODBC drivers for the same
I have a question here
Do I need to create the System DSN on windows XP or on Oracle (linux server)?
If it is on linux server, how to I create the System DSN on the Linux?
Thanks in Advance
Regards,
PkHi,
You need to create a DSN on the box where the HSODBC (the oracle db) is running, so in this case the Linux box.
I'd assume there's documentation that comes with the 3rd party odbc driver on how to create a DSN with it. It probably depends on which version of driver manager you're using (pardon my ignorance, I do strictly Windows) so you'd probably want to check the docs for the driver manager. For example, if using unixODBC, the docs are on [their web site|http://www.unixodbc.org/].
Hope it helps,

SQL query was failed in my report after migrating to Oracle 10gR2
We have a aplication running under Oracle 9.2.0.4 DB. we migrated our DB to Oracle 10gR2. While running the report, we got an error:
ORA-00904: "A3"."FACILITY_SYSTEM_ID": invalid identifier
ORA-06512: at "CEAS_MK_RPT.GET_LIST", line 12
The SQL query which causes this error is:
INSERT INTO gtt_facility_seq_generator

l_sep := CHR(10);
END LOOP;
CLOSE p_cursor;
RETURN l_text_return;
dbms_output.put_line ('a');
END Get_List;
The same report was executed perfectly in Oracle 9i. Kindly help us to short out this issue. Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Sengol SHi Nirav,
Many thanks for your response. I verified the same, but the same query was executed successfully after removing the INSERT INTO part(executed the SELECT part only). What might be the cause for this error?
For your kind information :
I have 2 schema in my DB( ceas_mk_app and ceas_mk_rpt ).
All the source tables are present in ceas_mk_app schema - These tables are used by ceas_mk_rpt schema(using synonym) to generate the report.
I'm executing the above said query from ceas_mk_rpt to insert the necessary data in to report temp. table.
Thanks,
Sengol S

Oracle 10gR2 Automated Storage Management implementation on CentOS 4.1
Actually there are several nice articles on Oracle Technical Network devoted to the same topic. Whats new may be said ?
The target of this message is to highlight the optimal sequence of steps required to bring Oracle10g (10.2.0.1) ASM-database up on CentOS4.1 , placing ASM instance and serviced databases in different Oracle Homes.Oracleasm library install is done immediately after creating "oracle" linux account and "dba" group to be ready for ASM Instance creating during the first Installer run supposed to build it. ASM instance for disks and disks group management is created the first by Installer along with the disks group for database supposed to be built during the second run of Installer and to be placed into recently created disks group.
I. Oracle 10gR2 ASM and ASMLib 2.0 I/O.
1.Install CentOS 4.1
2.Run as root:
# groupadd dba # group of users to be granted SYSDBA system privilege
# groupadd oinstall # group owner of Oracle files
# useradd -c "Oracle software owner" -g oinstall -G dba oracle
# passwd oracle
# mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle
# chown -R oracle.oinstall /u01
# mkdir -p /u02/oradata/wtfdata
# chown -R oracle.oinstall /u02
OTN instruction:-
Before installing Automatic Storage Management, it is recommended that you install the optional add-on Automatic Storage Management support library, ASMLib. ASMLib is an application program interface (API) Oracle that is aimed at simplifying the interface between the operating system and the database, and to exploit the capabilities and strengths of storage arrays provided by different vendors ASMLib provides an alternative interface for the Automatic Storage Management-enabled kernel to discover and access block devices. It provides storage and operating system vendors the opportunity to supply extended storage-related features. These features provide benefits such as improved performance and greater data integrity.
OTN instruction ends.
3.To install ASMLIB 2.0 run as root:-
# rpm -Uvh oracleasm-2.6.9-11.ELsmp-2.0.0-1.i686.rpm \
oracleasmlib-2.0.0-1.i386.rpm \
oracleasm-support-2.0.0-1.i386.rpm
Now you get /etc/init.d/oracleasm ready to go.
Configuring the Oracle ASM library driver:-
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm configure
Default user to own the driver interface [oracle]: oracle
Default group to own the driver interface [dba]: dba
Start Oracle ASM library driver on boot (y/n) [y]: y
Fix permissions of Oracle ASM disks on boot (y/n) [y]: y
Writing Oracle ASM library driver configuration: [ OK ]
Scanning system for ASM disks: [ OK ]
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm enable
Create ASM disks as desired utilizing command:
# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk VLM0X /dev/sdx
Tune /etc/sysctl.conf,/etc/security/limits.conf,/etc/pam.d/login, /etc/profile.
and oracle's shell environment as advised in [1].
Login as oracle:-
$ cd /tmp/database
$./runInstaller
OTN instructions:-
Its recommended that you install Automatic Storage Management in its own Oracle home, regardless of whether you plan to only have one or multiple database instances.Installing Automatic Storage Management in its own Oracle home helps ensure higher availability and manageability.With separate Oracle homes, you can upgrade Automatic Storage Management and databases independently, and you can remove database software without impacting the Automatic Storage Management instance. Ensure that the Automatic Storage Management version is the same or later than the Oracle Database version.If an Automatic Storage Management installation does not already exist and you select the Oracle Universal Installer option to install and configure Automatic Storage Management only, then Oracle Universal Installer installs Automatic Storage Management in its own Oracle home.
OTN instruction ends.
Select " Advanced installation" and
create ASM instance in $ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1
Create disk group during this run .
Exit installer.
$ ./runInstaller
Select " Advanced installation" and create new ASM-database placed into existing disk's group in $ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_2 .
Modify ~oracle/.bash_profile correspondently.Relogin as oracle.

II. Oracle 10gR2 ASM and Standard Linux I/O.
This method creates Oracle database files on raw character devices managed by ASM using standard Linux I/O system calls.It requires to create RAW devices for all disk partitions used by ASM.
1.Install CentOS 4.1
2.Run as root:
# groupadd dba # group of users to be granted SYSDBA system privilege
# groupadd oinstall # group owner of Oracle files
# useradd -c "Oracle software owner" -g oinstall -G dba oracle
# passwd oracle
# mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle
# chown -R oracle.oinstall /u01
# mkdir -p /u02/oradata/data
# chown -R oracle.oinstall /u02
Just as an example create 4 partitions:
/dev/hda6,/dev/hdc6 5 GB each one
/dev/hda7,/dev/hdc7 3 GB each one
Create raw devices modifying file /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices as follows:
/dev/raw/raw1 /dev/hda6
/dev/raw/raw2 /dev/hdc6
/dev/raw/raw3 /dev/hda7
/dev/raw/raw4 /dev/hdc7
Put in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
chown oracle:dba /dev/raw/raw*
chmod 660 /dev/raw/raw*
I was experiencing problems with loosing "oracle:dba" permissions after Linux
reboot. Oracle's raw device came up with "root:disk" ownership after reboot.
Restart Linux
Run as root:-
# service rawdevices restart
Tune /etc/sysctl.conf,/etc/security/limits.conf,/etc/pam.d/login,
/etc/profile and oracle's shell environment as advised in [1].
Login as oracle:-
$ cd /tmp/database
$./runInstaller
Select " Advanced installation" and
create ASM instance in ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/asm
During this run create diskgroup RAWDATA1 with normal redundancy
mirroring /dev/raw/raw1 and /dev/raw/raw2.
You should be fine with discovering raw devices if permissions are in place (oracle:dba)
Exit installer.
Export ORACLE_HOME for ASM instance and corresponding PATH.
Then run "dbca" to create diskgroup RAWDATA2 with
normal redundancy mirroring /dev/raw/raw3 and /dev/raw/raw4
$ ./runInstaller
Select " Advanced installation" and create new ASM-database placed RAWDATA1 diskgroup
in $ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1.
Modify ~oracle/.bash_profile correspondently.Relogin as oracle.

[email protected]Actually there are several nice articles on Oracle Technical Network devoted to the same topic.
Login as oracle:-
$ cd /tmp/database
$ ./runInstaller
Select " Advanced installation" and create new ASM-database placed into existing disk's group in $ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_2 .
Modify ~oracle/.bash_profile correspondently.Relogin as oracle.

Starting Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Database Control ........................ started.
Logs are generated in directory /u01/app/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_2/ServerCentOS41_MastDB/sysman/log
Install described above was done with different Oracle Homes
for ASM instance and ASM-database.
To put ASM instance and ASM-database in same Oracle Home.
Start runInstaller just once to build all stuff at a time.
Login as oracle:-
$ cd /tmp/database
$./runInstaller
Select " Advanced option" and install "Software only"
in ORACLE_HOME - /u01/app/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1.
Modify oracle's .bash_profile:-
export ORACLE_HOME and new PATH.
Source new .bash_profile:-
$. ~oracle/.bash_profile
$dbca
During this run the request to start CRS daemons by root will come up.
# $ORACLE_HOME/bin/localconfig add
ASM instance , needed disk's groups and ASM-database itself will be created.
Then perform listener and local TNS names configuration.
$netca
II. Oracle 10gR2 ASM and Standard Linux I/O.
This method creates Oracle database files on raw character devices managed by ASM using standard Linux I/O system calls.It requires to create RAW devices for all disk partitions used by ASM.
1.Install CentOS 4.1
2.Run as root:
# groupadd dba # group of users to be granted SYSDBA system privilege
# groupadd oinstall # group owner of Oracle files
# useradd -c "Oracle software owner" -g oinstall -G dba oracle
# passwd oracle
# mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle
# chown -R oracle.oinstall /u01
# mkdir -p /u02/oradata/data
# chown -R oracle.oinstall /u02
Just as an example create 4 partitions:
/dev/hda6,/dev/hdc6 5 GB each one
/dev/hda7,/dev/hdc7 3 GB each one
Create raw devices modifying file /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices as follows:
/dev/raw/raw1 /dev/hda6
/dev/raw/raw2 /dev/hdc6
/dev/raw/raw3 /dev/hda7
/dev/raw/raw4 /dev/hdc7
Put in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
chown oracle:dba /dev/raw/raw*
chmod 660 /dev/raw/raw*
I was experiencing problems with loosing "oracle:dba" permissions after Linux
reboot. Oracle's raw device came up with "root:disk" ownership after reboot.
Restart Linux
Run as root:-
# service rawdevices restart
Tune /etc/sysctl.conf,/etc/security/limits.conf,/etc/pam.d/login,
/etc/profile and oracle's shell environment as advised in [1].
Login as oracle:-
$ cd /tmp/database
$./runInstaller
Select " Advanced installation" and
create ASM instance in ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/asm
During this run create diskgroup RAWDATA1 with normal redundancy
mirroring /dev/raw/raw1 and /dev/raw/raw2.
You should be fine with discovering raw devices if permissions are in place (oracle:dba)
Exit installer.
Export ORACLE_HOME for ASM instance and corresponding PATH.
Then run "dbca" to create diskgroup RAWDATA2 with
normal redundancy mirroring /dev/raw/raw3 and /dev/raw/raw4
$ ./runInstaller
Select " Advanced installation" and create new ASM-database placed RAWDATA1 diskgroup
in $ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1.
Modify ~oracle/.bash_profile correspondently.Relogin as oracle.
Next:-
$ sqlplus /nolog
SQL> conn / as sysdba
Connected.
SQL> shutdown immediate;
Database closed.
Database dismounted.
ORACLE instance shut down.
SQL> startup mount;
ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 285212672 bytes
Fixed Size 1218968 bytes
Variable Size 88082024 bytes
Database Buffers 188743680 bytes
Redo Buffers 7168000 bytes
Database mounted.
SQL> alter database archivelog;
Database altered.
SQL> alter database rawdbs flashback on;
Database altered.
SQL> alter database open;
Database altered.
Open Enterpise Manager console.(Enterprise Manager 10g Database Control
URL http://ServerCentOS41:1158/em). Put flashback recovery area in RAWDATA2
modifying corresponding value on Recovery Settings page of EM.
