Documentation on Portal 3.0

You'll have much better luck getting a response if your post is in English.

  • Documentation of Portal Implementation - Experiences Required!

Dear EP Experts & NW Gurus,
    I would like to know:
1)Any amount of portal implementation includes creation of Portal objects and PAR files, systems etc etc..
Moving these portal objects from one env to other some times involves changing few properties..Here i would like to know as to how are the EP developers documenting the Portal Developement?
    2) How are the diff companies & consultants following the process of Design, Specs, TestCases & implementation?
Since there are so many properties involved for portal objects, these properties need to be documented so that if some problem happens in prod system then the docs can be consulted to find out whether the properties are correct or not?
    3) How does SAP themselves do the documentation of their releases? Is there some tools that they have created which queries some kind of databases & which just dumps the properties etc into some excel format...?
Why i am asking this is bcos (in our case) after such a large implementation (hundreds of portal objects & tons of config..), the docs which we created have become so heavey and big it sometimes becomes diff to manage the docs manually. & then when we have team scenario,(where many ppl work & new ppl come & join..)these docs maintainance is painfull.
    4) Most of the time after implementaion, where the support starts and when old iView keeps on changing as per new req, <b>is there any Standard way by which we can maintain the versions of Portal objects and config..??</b>
Please remember that i am talking abt all the phases of Soft Dev (High level Design, Specs, TestCases)..
I would like to discuss what kind of documennation does SAP & others do for portal implementations..
    Regards
    Gaurav

    Hi Dagfinn,
    Thanx for the reply..
I also think that the documentation should never become a burden..but a boon..
    - Can you explain in detail about the first point (writing script)..are u saying that by some means i traverse the PCD and pickup the portal objects etc..
    - We are on NW and have also configuared JDI recently. But how to use JDI for such kind of requirement.
Also as i asked, do u have any knowledge about Version Maintanance of Portal Objects?
The reason why i am again asking this is because what has happened recently is that since many ppl work on same objects and later on if an administrator wants to debug that who has changed what property -> it becomes diff to find out. even if i find that who has changed by "Changed by" but out of soo many propertes of any iView, which one was changed????
Regarding your answer about PCD Databases Browser.. in thread (Changing name of PCD object EP 6.0 SP11)
    <i>Yes,
You can use the PCD database browser to change pcd properties, though I am not sure if it is included in NetWeaver.
    Dagfinn</i>
I am on SP11 & SP9, and i am able to find that tool, but still not able to successfully connect. As soon as i connect, i willlet u know...
What about the other people here in SDN, what do the others have to say...??
    Regards

  • Documentation on portal from BW syst

I want to put the documentation for the report in the 'Documentation
Button' available on Portal. Where should I maintain this
documentation so that it appears on portal?
Also, is there a way to add scroll overs on the fields? As in, if I
move the mouse on the character/keyfigure in the report - a box
appears which has some details about that field.
    Regards

    Heike,
Thanks for your help in this. BWD and BQ2 are both on the same SP. SAP_BW release 350 level 10 (SAPKW35010) with BI_CONT at release 352 level 5 (SAPKIBIEP5).
I invalidated the server cache following your instructions and tried again, but am still having the same problem in BWD. The initial display gets the "Done, but with errors on page" message until any navigation is done.
I am using IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 when I execute queries on both BWD and BQ2.
Please, do you have any other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Jeri

  • Documenting a Portal Server Install

As a consultant I have installed iPS and the client, rightly, wants the
configuration settings documented. The client thinks that the only way
to do this would be to take screen shots of the screens in the console.
This is too much of a kludge for me. Is there a way extract the settings
in a human readable format to include with the "as built" documentation?
    Kent

    I know of two.
    1) Use ipsadmin export to an xml file. This has been problematic because
you can't get "everything" in one xml.
    2) Use an LDAP Browser (http://www.iit.edu/~gawojar/ldap/) and connect to
the iPortal ldap. Then, simply export the LDAP system to an LDIF file. You
can use this reinstate the system to a known state.
    Any more options?

  • What is better in Portal 7.0 (compared to Portal 5.0) ?

    Hi experts,
what would be the main argument for upgrading Portal from 5.0 to 7.0? What is decisively better in the higher version (e.g. Forums)? The reason why I am asking is that I really need arguments in order to make the customer clear why such a decission will bring the desired benefits into the organization.
Besides, I was not able to find any documentation on Portal 5.0 - so, I assume that this is some sort of taken out of the portfolio; at least when it comes to documentation.
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Best regards,
    Erdal

    Hi,
EP 5 is no longer supported, EP 7 is. All SPS, new functionality, Business Packages, bug fixes, etc is  going into EP 7 and 7.1 / 7.2.
This really should be a killer argument for convincing your client to upgrade.

  • Dissatisfied with usability of the Portal Studio site

    Hello,
We are ramping up production and I have been tasked with developing a proof of concept for Portal. Of course, I've spent countless hours setting up 9iAS, and even trying to understand this whole 'Portal' portal product (like many others). I have devloped in J2EE, VB, VC++, and plenty of other scripting (ASP, Perl) languages.
My experience on that site has been painful at best and it doesn't really seem to be very useful for the most important documentation from a developers standpoint.
It's almost as if it's information overload and just outright confusing. (Which is a concern our company has of implementing portal to our mere mortal users :-] )
All I want to do is find good reference material for setting up Portal, using Java to develop portlets on our development 9iAS instance (NOT using Oracle's hosted 'portal studio'!!), and configuring and setting up the URL based portlets.
This has turned out to be no easy task.
FOr instance, I want to figure out how to create a URL based portlet, AND UNDERSTAND WHAT I"M DOING! This seems to be the part that is skipped. If it's sooooo easy than why is it so difficult to find good reference to what i'm doing?
So I dig around the main portal page. I see a getting started link.. *click*.
Well, I don't see anything specific to URL Providers... maybe the "How can I create portlets using my existing web applications?" is what I want. *click*
Oh, look.. it's like 3rd grade.. a slide show!>.. Cool. :-| okay.. ERRRGHHHT!... hit the brakes!.
"The PDK provides a samle XML configuration file.." ??? where is my link to more information about this magic "configuration file"???.... ahh. So I stop the silly slideshow and I want to know about this "configuration file".. *close window*
Now I'm back at the portal studio heap.
    hmm.. "Documentation" for POrtal *click*
Hmm.. after searching through this mind boggling page, there is a "Portal configuration guide" link.. sounds reasonable. *click*
so I look for "URL Provider".. or just "URL" on that page. Nothin found. bah!.. well, now I'm stumped. There is this mystery 'config' file that i've failed to quickly find information about. Strike 1.
So I use the other part of my brain (the developer side)...
There is this "HTTP Adapter" thing. Looks like part of the acclaimed "URL provider" mess. SO i read on...
blah blah blah... nothin of significant use stands out.
ah... somethin... "4.3 Registering A Provider Using The PL/SQL HTTP Adapter".. again. useless. *click * click * back *
So now I retreat back to the silly portal studio page.
Back to the task at hand... finding out the innerds of the configuration files involved in writing a "URL provider".
Looking at the available documents.. OHH LOOK! the actual documentation library is buried at the bottom of the page!.. hmm. I just read the "config guide".. "web toolkit"...?? I wonder.. *click* (grinding as Acrobat loads again)
AHhhh.. it's a "PL/SQL" web toolkit. Not imporessed. How many web developers actually know PL/SQL .. or would WANT to program logic in that query language??? or even any Java or C developers?...grr..
    *click* back *
Where is it..??>. this is about the point where I start to forget what I'm looking for.
Well, I've come to the conclusion that the "Oracle9iAS Portal Documentation Library" is a small library, as it doesn't appear to have any good reference for the details of portal use and configuration.. or at least involving the URL services.
*back*back*.. Oh, look what I found.
Near the bottom of the page ("getting started"), there is a link under ""Navigation"" that reads "URL-based: Learn how the PDK helps you build portlets in any web language."
hmm. looks promising. Maybe a little more respectable than that 3rd grade slide show.
    *click*
"BUilding URL based portlets".. Ahh presto!
Nice. opened a new browser window. (dumb)
    Okay.. I need the PDK.
    *click**download**wait*
I extract it to a warm home.
hmm.."Installing URL based Portlets".. sounds intriguing
well, it's now lunch time and I thing I found some good meat.
If you've rached this point you can probably now understand (after reading this long post) tha pain I experience.
    GOtta eat some lunch.
    -sean@Tekelec

    Sean,
I am sorry to hear that you had such problems navigating through Portal Studio to find content on URL Services. Right now Portal Studio is geared by technology, so you click on URL-Based for URL Services, Java for building Java Portlets. Hopefully all the doc will be there to help you. If not, I would be happy to point you in the right direction.
If you are looking to display web content as portlets, you should take a look at Web Clipping, it is a wizard form of URL Services where you simply use the wizard UI.
Go to Portal Studio and click on OmniPortlet and WebClipping or go here:
    http://portalstudio.oracle.com/servlet/page?_pageid=350&_dad=ops&_schema=OPSTUDIO&12678_PDKHOME902_39847486.p_subid=350276&12678_PDKHOME902_39847486.p_sub_siteid=73&12678_PDKHOME902_39847486.p_edit=0
This page has demos and papers on using Web Clipping. To install Web Clipping, download the PDK and follow the instructures under the pdk/pdk/portalTools directory.
We are revamping the Portal Studio site to hopefully make navigation much easier for all users (developer and non developer).
Please let me know if you help finding other information. The feedback does help us improve the site.
    Thanks,
    Sue Vickers

  • How to get the User Details inoformation in portal?

I had defined the user informations in "Portal User Details". But i don't know how to get it and what the user table is?
for example: How to get the email address of user i have defined in portals?
    Tank you very much!
    Ghia Liu
    Genesyslogic.com.tw

You would use the portal API's for this, there is one named wwsec_api.person_info that returns a record with the specified user's information, such as first name, lsat name, email, telephone, etc - a pretty long list. With release 2 of portal the data is no longer stored in the wwsec_person$ table as it was in release 1 so use the API (which actually is how I would normally do it in release 1 as well).
To get more documentation on portal API's go to: http://portalstudio.oracle.com/pls/ops/docs/FOLDER/COMMUNITY/PDK/plsql/doc/astart.htm
Hope that this helps you - enjoy the day!

  • Customization, API documentation

Where does the source code reside for portal components such as forms, reports, charts etc.? Is that possible that I can add my own customized codes in order to fit my needs (such as client side data validation using javaScript, adding a few text line etc)?
Where does the page source code reside? How can I access it and do some customization?
Is there any documentation on portal API?
    Thanks for your help.
    null

You can get documentation on the portal APIs from the Portal Development Kit (PDK). Do a search on technet for 'pdk' and it will come up in the results. There is documentation on the APIs for PL/SQL and Java.

    The Beta 9.2 Team

    The Beta 9.2 Team,
9.2 features sounds good and interesting. We are using BEA's Content management system(8.1) extensively.
Our requirement is to create a portlet for Content Owner/Users to create HTML documents with images and upload it into BEA Repository. Upon uploading, Content Admin needs to be notified through email and they will either approve or reject the document. The content status again needs to be notified to the content owner/user via email.
    1. As known to everyone 8.1 doesn't have WYSIWYG editor and is included in 9.2. Can i reuse the 9.2 WYSIWYG functionality into 8.1 as a portlet??
    2. The following thread(http://forums.bea.com/bea/message.jspa?messageID=400001479&tstart=0) says
    - workflow ==> We have limited workflow support. We plan to enhance this in our next major release.
Does this limited workflow support include email notification?
Any inputs would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Portal implementation on PP/MM/SD modules

    Greetings,
I've been working as Portal developer / HR functional using mainly MSS/ESS business package on the past 3 last projects and I had never worked with other module than HCM with Portal before
My manager asked me to help on a new Portal implementation to evaluate development time / resources ... but I really don't have much expertise on other modules regarding Portal development on PP/MM/SD modules, my questions :
    - Is there a specific Business package for PP/MM/SD modules?
    - Is there a ground zero point / basic documentation regarding portal implementation on these modules?
    - What do you recomend me about it?
    Thanks in advancce,

  • Portal groups/users and security

    Hi,
I have created an application and that application has forms, reports, meunes, page with three tabs for Admin, Librarian and Reports. I put some portlets of Forms etc in different tabs. Now i want that the Admin can access and see all tabs, Librarian can access and see Librarian and Reports tab while Users just can see and run Reports. For that i created three groups
Admin_group, Librarian_group and user_gropus. For each group i created test users and attach or add these users to the group. To each group i gave execute permission of the application. After that i went to the page and on the page i assign follwoing permission to the tab.
    Reports: all three groups(view only)
    Librarian: Librarian_group and admin_group view_only
    Admin: Admin_group view_only.
Then i log on as a test user of the User_groups but i was just able to see the report tab but not the menue (which is portlet in this page). Same with other tabs and users. I want to know what i am missing.
Your help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Sudheer Hi Ravikanti,
Here are two things you can do to get started.. In 9iAS Release 2, Export/Import functionality is provided via a set of export/import utilities included with 9iAS Portal.
    1) If you have not had the opportunity yet, a good place to start is to download and review the Oracle9iAS Portal 9.0.2.2 Export/Import FAQ posted on portalcenter.oracle.com.
Here is the URL for the Portal 9.0.2.2 Export/Import FAQ:
    http://portalstudio.oracle.com/pls/ops/docs/FOLDER/COMMUNITY/OTN_CONTENT/MAINPAGE/DEPLOY_PERFORM/EXPORT_IMPORT_FAQ_1127.HTM
    2) For official documentation on Portal 9.0.2 Export/Import, refer to the Task Help in the Online Documentation for Portal Import/Export (accessible from the question mark help icon within the "Browse Transport Sets" wizard.)
