Documents do not render in finder preview, quick look or cover flow

The contents of all types of appleworks documents do not appear in finder preview, quick look or cover flow on both of my computers. The generic AWKS logo appears.
Why does this happen and what can be done to correct this?
I have repaired permissions a number of times and have restarted the computer.

I'm not sure Appleworks files are supported in any form of preview. Appleworks was killed long before any of the preview functions were developed, so I don't suppose its file types were included.
Quicklook has a plugin architecture, so perhaps some programmer that likes Appleworks will create a plugin for it.

AppleWorks 6 was written before OS X & long before Leopard & Quick Look. There hasn't even been an update since January 2004. The ability to create the image for Quick Look likely will never happen.

  • I can't see my pictures in teh finder using Quick look or Cover flow

I have iPhoto8 installed and it works fine, but I cannot get a look at my library of photos without opening iPhoto. I thought I was supposed to be able to use the finder and cover flow to see my pictures quickly to find the one I wanted without opening iPhoto? When I go to pictures I get the icon for the iphoto program and it says iphoto library, but I cant see pictures. Am I doing something wrong?

    OBGYNDR
With iPhoto 7 the old iPhoto Library Folder has become a Unix Style Package folder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
All of these are safer and fster than surfing the iPhoto Library Folder.

  • For The Experts: Quick Look and Cover Flow?

    Hi
I have not been able to find the answer to my question anywhere on the internet. I thought that some of you experts out there may be able to help me.
I deal with thousands of files all the time that are essentially text files (i.e .txt). I have one problem though. They end with the extension .01 for Jan, .02 for Feb etc. If I rename the extension on one of these files to .txt, I can view them in Cover Flow and I can also see the contents by using Quick Look.
Unfortunately, I cannot rename the extensions on all these files to .txt, because they need to be sent to various departments and cannot be changed.
Does anyone know if it is possible to make Cover Flow and Quick Look think that these are text files?
    Thanks...
    Brian.

Hello. SetFile, just like any other console tool, can accept wildcards. For example:
Set the attribute of all files in the directory named mydocs:
    <pre>
    /Developer/Tools/SetFile -t TEXT /Users/whuggy/mydocs/*
    </pre>
You can also use the more powerful 'find' command: Find all files in your 'mydocs' directory that ends with '.01' and set them as a text file:
    <pre>
    find /Users/whuggy/mydocs -name "*.01" -exec /Developer/Tools/SetFile -t TEXT {} ';'
    </pre>
This means: find stuff inside mydocs directory whose name ends with ".01"; on each item you find execute the command /Developer/Tools/SetFile -t TEXT to it. The '{}' placeholder is substituted with the filepath of an item. And the ';' at the end designates the end of that command.

  • No .dng Preview in Finder or Quick Look; File Dimensions 0x0.

Can see Canon .CR2 raw file preview in finder and quick look. Can see file dimensions.
Cannot see same files converted in Lightroom to DNGs. File dimensions listed as 0x0.
CAN see older DNG files processed exactly the same way. All files stored in an external WD 2TB drive. Just for fun dragged an old DNG file to that drive and the preview works fine.
    OSX 10.9
    Latest Adobe Camera Raw
    Latest Adobe Lightroom
Rebooted, emptied caches, reindexed Spotlight, and on and on and on.
Apple bug? Adobe bug? Or another situation where they are blaming each other and the professionals relying on their products enjoy yet more frustration. Don't get me started on the color management fiasco of not so long ago...
    Thanks!
    Jon

Here is the situation: I use Spotlight to search, and
find a bunch of things I want to look at, including
some PDF files, which I click to open in Preview.
Now, I want to send some of these documents, or at
least one of them, as an email attachment using
    Mail.app. What to do?
One way to do this is to use the "Mail PDF" item in the PDF Services group of items under the PDF "menu" in the Print Dialog. For multiple documents, this would mean bringing up the dialog ffor each document, so maybe that is not practical.
You could also create a workflow item using Automator. I am not that familiar with Automator, and you'll have much better luck in the Automator forum, but a quick glance shows an "Add Attachment to Front Message" action as part of Mail.
    Hope this helps.

  • Trouble getting QuickTime to run on Windows 7. Error 46: Could not load or find the Quick Time Active X control.

Trouble getting QuickTime to run on Windows 7.Installation seems to finish successfully. When can try to open it I get the following error message:
Error 46: Could not load or find the Quick Time Active X control.  I have reinstalled QuickTime and itunes several times but with no luck. Any suggestions?

    Hi Pedro d,
Yes but no! I have tried everything step by step several times. Researching Error 46 on the web is scary business!! The gangsters are out in force on this one, begging to take your money! From a couple of trusted sites I have been able to make this much clear at least for Vista users, I'm using Windows 7 but I think they relate:
"Since the issue causing the Error 46 is that QuickTime registry entries don't have the correct permissions set, the repair is to go and reset all the incorrect permissions. However, this is a long and tedious process. The SubInACL tool from Microsoft (see the link in Resources) can change the permissions as a batch. The batch is defined by a CMD file that lists all of the registry keys to be changed. Once SubInACL is installed on your computer, move the CMD file with all the registry changes into the same folder, typically C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools. Right-click the CMD file, choose "Properties," check "Run this Program in Compatibility Mode" and select "Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)" from the drop-down menu. Click "OK." Do the same for SubInACL. When you're done, double-click on the CMD file and it will run. Your error should be gone."
I don't have the expertise to do this, do you? I wish that Apple or someone would take the bull by the horns and fix this because what I've read their are a lot of people having this problem. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Kindly,

  • Color is Wrong in Preview / Quick Look when viewing photographs

    Hi All,
I have a problem in that all my photos and image files look a lot more saturated in Leopard Preview / Quick Look, with much warmer hue, tint and color temp, then they do in either iPhoto, Aperture, Photoshop Elements, Safari (or Firefox) when uploaded to the Web and even in my Windows XP VM using the normal Explorer application. The difference is very visibly and is unacceptable when viewing / editing photos.
To summarize, it seems the only place images look different, much more saturated with more warmer tint and hue, is in OS X Leopard Preview and Quick Look.
    - I have tried viewing and comparing on another Macbook Laptop and do not notice this problem, which leads me to believe that there is a problem with my system.
    - I have also tried creating another user account on my Mac and logging in to preview the images, but it makes no difference.
Can someone please advise as to what I can do to fix the problem?
    Thanks,
    P

I have noticed the same. Seems like a genuine bug in preview.
Try this for laughs: Open up a picture in Preview and note its too warm colors. Make a screenshot, and view in preview next to the original image. The now magically warmer colors prove this is indeed a bug in preview.
Lightroom, PS, Safari, Opera all show the images in question (JPG, embedded profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1) consistently correctly, with preview being the only exception a lazy comparison could find.
EDIT: This happens only on my external TFT. If I move both the Photoshop and the preview windows to the built-in screen, the Photoshop colors "snap" to look the same on both screens (and the same as preview on the built-in TFT).
There seems to be a problem with preview always applying (correct) color correction for the built-in TFT regardless of whether the image is actually displayed there or on another display. This is probably also only noticeable if built-in TFT and external display have noticeably different color responses (and thus corrections), and only when their colors are corrected.
This really is an annoying bug for photographers or other creative people (which Apple prides itself to cater to).

  • Unable to view microsoft office files (2011) with quick view and cover flow

I am unable to view office for mac 2011 files in quick view or cover flow. All I see is the generic icon and not the preview. I've searched a number of forums but haven't found a solution.
    Thanks

Yea, I did do a Time Machine restore not too long ago. Perhaps that was the cause. In any case, I went by the apple store day before yesterday to see if they could help me (I use quick look a lot!), and the tech's opinion was the my whole system was running slow and buggy, so he suggested to go ahead and spend the time doing a clean install of the OS. I did this yesterday... quick look for office docs is back, and my system is soooooo much faster and problem free now. Looking back, the ability of OS X to reinstall without erasing the boot disc is a blessing and curse. I upgraded instead of cleanly reinstalling when I got Snow Leopord, and recently did a time machine restore when I was having some problems. With windows, I was doing a clean reinstall at least once a year. Perhaps doing it once every two years or so is a good idea for mac. The biggest headache is importing all my old mailboxes into mail, and sorting through the duplicates that get created.
    Good luck

  • Word documents have a logo image imbedded in Preview & Quick Look

    System information:
    MacbookPro 17"
2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Snow Leopard OS X Ver. 10.6.2
MS Word 2008 for Mac Ver. 12.2.3 (091001)
    Issue:
I can see an image (a black and white logo that I recognize, not Apple or MS related) in certain document previews in Finder. I also see the image if I use Quick Look of the same documents. To my knowledge, I never inserted or embedded this image into the document. If I open the document, the image does not appear. I have tried using the various Views of the document to find and remove the image, but it does not appear in any View type, once opened. The image is a logo that a colleague of mine created, but I have never downloaded it and I have not e-mailed the document back and forth with him. If I copy/paste the text from the affected document to a new document, this seems to eliminate the image, but I am concerned that this may be malicious, that it may have come from using a networked drive at work.

  • MP3's do not play in finder (preview)

For some reason I cant the preview feature does not work for Mp3 files in Finder. Instead, the file shows up as a quicktime icon and clicking on it launches quicktime. I do not see the play bar anymore.
Any idea what I need to do so that I can listen to an audio file in preview? Thanks!

I get the same thing and what I do is, let's say, I'm in column view and I have a folder with mp3's, I highlight one and see the itunes icon, I then switch to cover flow view and press the space bar for quick look and the song begins to play. you can highlight the file in column view and press the space bar for quick look also.
as to why the different icon look? have no clue.
shame after 11 updates apple couldn't wring out the same bugs that 10.5.1 had, lol. just funnin.

  • WIDESCREEN MOTION PROJECT NOT WIDESCREEN IN FINDER PREVIEW (HENCE IN DVDSP)

    Howdy folks,
This seems like an easy one but I haven't been able to figure it out after a long time of trying and internet searching.
I have a Motion project with the following "project properties":- Preset: 1080i50; Width 1440; Height: 1080; Pixel aspect ratio: (HD 960*720, 1440*1080).
This is a widesreen project and looks so in the Motion canvas window. However, when I find the file in Finder and click on it once to get the little preview, it is not in widescreen and in fact looks distorted to my eye (squashed).
I get the same playback if I open the file using Quicktime. More pertinently, I get the same plackback when I import the file directly into DVD Studio Pro, which is what I want to do.
I hope you folks can help.
    Cheers,
    Grateful Bob

On my system, a Motion project @ 1440x1080 plays back thin in the Finder but correctly in DVD SP. If it's wrong in DVD SP, make it into a Track, then force that Track to be 16:9 Letterbox with the Inspector. This will only apply to an HD-DVD, of course; for SD you'll need to be downconverting.
In SD, the problem is slightly different (and this applies to the other poster here): you want to tick the "anamorphic" checkbox in the FCP browser to make sure your assets are interpreted correctly.
The behind-the-scenes 1440x1080-to-1920x1080 trickery that many codecs use is very much like the anamorphic trickery in SD, but we don't need to know much about it because all the HD resolutions should be interpreted as 16:9.

  • Can't play MP3's from Finder without Quick Look

Not really expecting any relevant answers but I might as well try I guess.
    Ok, before:
    __ .mp3
Center of this icon had a play button, and it was possible to minimize the window while the song played.
No need for Quick Look or a media player.
    Now:
    Quick look works.
But as I mentioned, I can't just click a play button in a finder window, as in here with my mouse hovered over the bottom icon.
I don't understand why the icons are different or how to fix this.

Ignore the first two, long story. Anyway:
    THEN:
    • Icon had a center Play button.
    • Could play mp3's inside a miminize-able Finder window.
    • No need for media player or Quick Look.
    NOW:
    Those luxuries are now gone.
Also, Get info shows both icons..
Mp3's play from here, but unlike Finder, there's no Quick Look to track songs when necessary.
    • This is an external drive.
    • Permissions are fine.
    • I always browse in icon view.
    • Opening with QuickTime / VLC does not help.
I just want to know a fix without a 3rd party or Terminal.
This happened before and went away.

  • The Finder and previews of files in cover flow

Just looking at the Leopard video. When I go to the finder and have the cover flow options selected, I don't see any previews of anything on my folders. The folders all have generic names. Nothing like the video tour on apple website. I can't see a preview of something in a folder, let alone play a preview of a movie in one like they do on the video tour. Am I missing something here???

I fixed my problem for the crappy looking .jpegs in cover flow now i want my folders to look good with the icons i gave them example i put the first .jpeg of the folder as a icon on the folder so I know what is in that folder. I did this along time ago but the icons look like crap. Can this be fixed? I thought cover flow showed the 1st file in the folders on cover flow?

  • Photos distorted when opened in preview, yet ok in cover flow

    Hi
I previously posted this question which got moved to the iPhoto section, but its NOT an iPhoto issue: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2619921&tstart=0
Having purchased a new camera (Sony DSC2000) the first time I used it the photos were fine...now ever since they appear intermittently distorted, or missing altogether. I tried creating a basic new user account as a test with the same results. Help!!

    Hi
Thanks for the tip. Yes the problems happen regardless of the location or user account. As an example when opening the jpegs in Preview the log shows the following messages repeatedly:
    Macintosh.local Finder[115] <Error>: CGImageCreate: invalid image size: 0 x 0.
    10/12/2010 18:59:10 [0x0-0xb00b].com.apple.finder[115] Fri Dec 10 18:59:10 Macintosh.local Finder[115] <Error>: CGImageCreate: invalid image size: 0 x 0.

And when viewing the distorted jpegs in cover flow in Finder:
Macintosh.local quicklookd[727] <Error>: Corrupt JPEG data: premature end of data segment
    10/12/2010 19:25:22 com.apple.quicklook[727]
    10/12/2010 19:25:24 com.apple.quicklook[727] Fri Dec 10 19:25:24 Macintosh.local quicklookd[727] <Error>: Bogus marker length
Any ideas gratefully received. Short of anything else I reckon I will try an erase and fresh install of Mac OS X 10.5 and see if that sorts things.

  • Finder Bug Renaming files with cover flow

If I try to rename a file using finder with cover flow using left and right arrows for moving in the filename, it goes up and down on file selection

A similar issue is evident in "List" view, when renaming a file inside a folder whose "disclosure triangle" is expanded. If you happen to be working a few levels down, it closes them all.
    Maddening!
If you feel so inclined, please submit a bug report. Hopefully issues that receive a lot of complaints will be addressed.
