Documents Stack Reappears in Dock after Restart

When I installed Leopard, it created the default dock, containing the basic applications and some stacks. One of those stacks was the Documents Stack, which I did not find useful, so I dragged it out of the dock and poof it was gone. But when I restarted, it was back in my dock.
Now, every time I restart I have to remove it again, but it always "respawns" upon restart again.
How can I permanently destroy that persistent stack?

Does it remember if you add an application or a different folder to the Dock? If not, it sounds like your dock plist is hosed. Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and type:
rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.db
killall Dock
When the dock comes back up, it should be back at its default config. Set it up how you want and then restart and see if the problem persists.

    Is there a way to get the little blue folder icons that say "Downloads" and "Documents" to appear on the stacks in the dock instead of a thumbnail type icon of the first document or download in the stack? 10.6 Snow Leopard.  The Apple Web page describing "Stacks" as a new part of Snow Leopard shows them.

    Yes, right click (control click) on the icon and select Display as Folder.

  • If I remove a stack from the dock where do the files go?

    I have numerous files and folders in the Documents stack. I really don't need to see most of those files. If I remove the Documents stack form the Dock will I lose the files? Where will they be?
    Thanks

    So, I'm new to Macs, but if I understand correctly, I could click on the Macintosh HD icon, then go to Users and then to my folder, once there I can create a new folder and put my commonly updated files in there. Then I could remove the Documents folder from the Dock and I should have what I want: frequently updated files in a stack on the dock and less frequently used files/folders still in my folder (ie the Home folder) which would be accessible through the Finder.
    Right??
    Thanks

    It is true that the only way to sync your Mac with iCloud is to upgrad.  You need to be running OS X Lion 10.7.2 or higher in order to sync your Mac with iCloud.  At this point, you can upgrade directly to OS X Mountain Lion from the version of OS X you are now running (10.6.8).   You can purchase and download the Mountain Lion upgrade from the Mac App Store for $19.99.  After upgrading you will see iCloud in System Preferences.  This guide explains how to sync your Mac with iCloud after upgrading: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/mac.html.
    Once all your devices are signed into the same iCloud account and you have turned on your iCloud data syncing, you will be able to keep them all in sync using iCloud.  You will still have to sync with iTunes to manage your iTunes media such as music, movies, podcasts, etc.  You will have the option to either continue backing up automatically with your computer when you sync with iTunes, or to back up your iOS devices automatically to iCloud every 24 hours (as long as they are connected to wifi and your chargers).

    I was saving a document when it originally quit. so "locked" file appeared in directory as well as reg file.
    Upon restart of InDesign, recovery failed and software quit again.
    Restarted computer, then indesign, file opens but as soon as I select "recover" it sends a message that indesign needs to close.

    Use your operating system’s Search utility to find a folder called (InDesign Recovery) and delete it.

  • I have created a second user on my imac (OSX 10.7.1) and applications won't stay in the dock and my preferences default after restart. Anyone else have this problem?

    I have created a second user on my iMac (OSX 10.7.1) and applications won't stay in the dock and my preferences default after restart. Everything works fine with the main user. Anyone else have this problem?

    Hi again, ;o)
    I found this advice in another thread (here), which you might find helpful...
    Unregistering the iMac from .Mac syncing and re-registering it (replacing the computer's information with the .Mac information) resolved the issue.
    The .Mac sync information was Reset (i.e. recopied in it's entirety) from the MacBook (the 'good' computer) to .Mac prior to unregistering and re-registering the iMac, so a fresh copy of the sync could be loaded from .Mac to the iMac.
    I hope this helps the others who have had this problem.

  • Dock resets contents after restart

    My dock contents reset after I restart.
    My monitor settings also reset at restart.
    other apps get settings set to defaults after restart.
    any suggestions?

    26-May-2012 01:59I bought an iMac last October, 21", 4GB standard manufactured settings ram etc. After a few weeks every time I quit an application and go back on it, it returns to its old settings. Whenever I remove a bookmark from the toolbar on Safari and restart it, it returns to the old settings, when ever I restart the computer the dock and background changes towards its original settings. This is starting to get really annoying, and I don't know what to do and I have installed all available updates. Is an issue like this covered in a warranty and do you guys have any ideas on what I should do?

  • Untitled Documents Gone After Restart - Maverick Pages

    Hi -
    I was working on two documents a couple days ago. When I looked at my computer this morning, they were there. I shut down and took my laptop with me. When I restarted, they are gone.
    I was working in the Maverick version of Pages. I believe they were untitled as they were works in progress. They do not show up under the "open recent" menu in Pages, which is odd, because I would think they would show there.
    I did not have a Time Machine backup going as I did not have my backup drive connected.  I have looked in Trash for Recovered Files, but for some reason, the last recovered files showing are from March 21st. I looked in Library/Autosave Information, but the last files there are months old, too.
    Is there anywhere that I can find these files?? Usually, Pages saves untitled documents and reopens them when you restart - indeed, two such documents from weeks ago DID reopen.
    Has anyone else had this trouble with the Maverick version of Pages?
    I would so appreciate some help - they were almost completed articles that I was just about to submit. (And yes, I know I should have titled them and saved them, but I have never had this problem before - ever!)
    Thanks!
    Tara

    Hmmm...I guess it WAS muscle memory, because I don't remember ever being asked to do that. That said, it's definitely entirely possible I did.
    When I shut down this morning, it was a standard one. Lid was up, but I walked away to do something else. When I returned, the computer had shut down. In the past, I have had a message that popped up that stopped the shut down asking if I wanted to save this or that. There was no such message this time.
    Truthfully, I think what I have done is anger the Mavericks gods. I have been saying that I really do not like Mavericks and find it a pain in the butt to have two versions of Pages/Numbers/Keynote running, and if you open something done in the former in the latter, then you can never open the document ever again in the former. The document may have been created in Mountain Lion, but it is now a Maverick.
    Apparently, angering the Maverick gods means I start losing work in ways I have never lost it before. Oh, well. I will now title everything as soon as I start it and remember to save it immediately. I do a huge volume of writing and usually am working on several things at once. Sometimes I split up articles into two (as in the case in the documents I lost), and keep working on the first while the second hangs out as untitled. No more, I guess.
    Honestly, I feel like I have my old PC lately...all the stuff I used to have to do with it I have to do again with Mavericks. Doesn't seem a step forward for me anyway.
    Oh, well. Thanks for your help - I very much appreciate it.
    Have a great day -
    Tara

  • Restoring downloads/documents folder to the dock?

    can anybody suggest how i might restore the downloads and documents folders to the dock? i accidentally removed them. and now, of course, i want them back. as they are not apps, i don't know how to get them back in the dock. many, many thanks.

    This is easy.
    Open up a Finder window and go to your Home directory (this is the one that bears your account name in the sidebar on the left of the Finder window.
    Locate the Downloads and the Documents folders.
    Now look at the Dock itself. Near the Trash you will find the Dock Divider Bar. Applications go on one side of that -- the side away from the Trash -- and folders and minimized windows go on the other side -- the side near the Trash.
    Now just click and drag each of these two folders, Downloads and Documents, into the portion of the Dock on the side of the divider bar near the Trash.
    The original folder will stay where it was and a new icon (a pointer to the folder) will appear in the Dock. Since this is a folder you just put in the Dock, it will automatically be shown as a "Stack" view.
    To remove an item from the Dock, click and drag it away from the Dock. The icon will go "poof" and vanish. The "real" item, the thing the Dock pointer pointed to, will not be altered.
    You can also click and drag icons around within the Dock to get them into the order you prefer. Just keep them on the correct side of the Dock Divider bar.

  • When I try and open Microsoft Word 2011 documents they start opening one after another at a rapid speed and I can't stop it. I reboot and same thing happens?

    When I try and open Microsoft Word 2011 documents on my  IMAC they start opening one after another at a rapid speed and I can't stop it. I reboot and same thing happens. The documents open in rapid succession on their own and don't stop until I force close or after maybe 100 or more open I start getting the following message for each document attemting to open "This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document" and then in paretheses the name of the document. After I click okay another trys to open. Any suggestions?

    If you had multiple documents open and quit the app without closing all of the docs first, it will open them again when you launch the app. Open Word, and then close all the documents, you may be asked to save the document, if the document was already saved but you made changes to it before you quit the app, you may need to save the changes first, shorcut ( command and s keys). After you close all of the documents then quit the app and restart the computer. See if this works.

  • My recent items list appears again after restart. How do I delete it for good?

    When I turn on the computer, the recent items list still displays the documents and applications I worked with a few days ago. I delete it, and after restarting the computer, it displays the same list again (not a new list, but the exact same items over and over again).  Any tips?

    Select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  If this is a current 4th (or 3rd) gen iPod shuffle, you should be able to see the contents of the shuffle by type, intented under the shuffle's name (still in the sidebar).  Select Music or Audiobooks (not sure where those items from the library will be listed).  The items will be listed to the right, for each category.  Find the items, select, and delete.
    It's on page 20 of the manual
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod_shuffle_4thgen_User_Guide.pdf
    NOTE:  If this is an 1st or 2nd gen iPod shuffle, select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  Over to the right, go to the Contents tab, where the items are listed.  Select and delete them from this list.
    I find it more convenient to make a playlist in iTunes with things I want to put on the shuffle.  I then set up automatic syncing (or use autofill) to have iTunes load the shuffle from that playlist, automatically.

  • My Finder / User preferences never saved after Restart. Help!

    After a "successful" back-up from Time Machine (thanks, Time Machine), my files seem to all be here, but my Finder and basic Application preferences have never been the same since.
    My MacBook Pro 17" hard drive crashed. I had an authorized Apple repair replace it with a new drive. I restored my set-up via Time Machine as instructed and was happy to see I was (mostly) back in good shape.
    What HASN'T been the same since - when I RESTART:
    - Whenever I shut down/restart, my desktop will always revert back to the last "mode" pre-crash. For example, one same folder is always open, as it happened to be the folder opened during the crash. Now, no matter what I seem to have opened on my desktop before I shut down, that other "old" folder always greets me after a restart.
    - Many applications I notice do not "remember" the last settings changed/used, always reverting to the "pre-crash" setting. Notable examples:
    - iChat settings (buddy icon, status, etc.) must ALWAYS be manually adjusted when I open iChat now.
    - iTunes and iPhoto are a big drag to open, because I must always "find" my libraries. They have long been moved to an external drive, but these iApps always ask me to locate them or create new ones. Even if I attempt to change my preferences.
    - Dock: the settings/icons revert back to the "pre-crash" version, and since I have updated many Apps, several icons show the Question Mark symbol, as some old Apps are long gone.
    I tried Disk Utility, repairing permissions. It recognized many inconsistencies and problems,
    but the repairs never seem to "stick."
    Again, this happens each time I restart/reboot.
    So if I only put my MacBook to sleep mode, it does fine when it wakes up,
    and remembers desktop settings, iChat settings, etc.
    Therefore, I only rarely shut down now, to avoid my Groundhog's Day syndrome.
    This is annoying. Help Me. Someone. Please.

    Apparently the previous preferences were copied over by TM.
    First it would probably be a good idea to start up from the install disk and run Disk Utilities’ Repair Disk. If you don’t know how to do that, reply back for specific directions.

    Because it appears to be preference files that cause the problem, you can begin removing them from the Preferences folder. These .plist files can be moved to the Desktop and the system will recreate new ones in the Preferences folder. If removing the .plist file doesn’t help, the one on the desktop can be moved back into the Preferences folder to replace the newly created one.
    Locate the Preference folder by this path:
    Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences
    (where “yourusername” is the short name of your computer, like hawaii - the folder looks like a house/home)
    Often users confuse the above path with Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences. That is not the one needed. The correct one is the Preference folder in the Users home folder.
    The same folder appearing after restarting is related to the Finder, so move the file named com.apple.finder.plist to the Desktop and restart. If that helps preventing the same folder appearing, you will need to reset all your Finder preferences. If not, you can return the old .plist file from the Desktop back to the Preferences folder and will need to look for another solution.

    Each of the above has its own .plist file(s) in the above named Preferences folder.
    It’s probably best to quit the applications before removing the preferences. Try moving the main .plist files, i.e., com.apple.iChat.plist to the desktop and restart iChat. If it doesn’t help, remove the other .plist files related to iChat. They will be replaced by the system. Some newly created .plist files don’t function until after a restart (like the Finder one described above). I don’t think iChat, iTunes, etc., require a restart, but it couldn’t hurt. If this helped with iChat, do the same procedure for iTunes, Dock, and any others giving you problems.
    If these do not help, you may need to consider an Archive & Install.
    I tried Disk Utility, repairing permissions. It recognized many inconsistencies and problems,
    but the repairs never seem to "stick."
    As long as the permissions inconsistencies include “Permissions differ,” SUID or ACL warnings, you can probably safely ignore them. But there is a .plist file for DiskUtility as well, which you may want to replace by moving it to the Desktop and restarting. If at the end of Repair Permissions it says “Permission Repair Complete,” it’s probably okay.
    Again, this happens each time I restart/reboot.
    So if I only put my MacBook to sleep mode, it does fine when it wakes up,

  • Changes in Bundle.js file are disappear after restarting the UCM

    Good Day,
    I add some javascript code in bundle.js file within the following path: domain_home\ucm\cs\weblayout\resources\bundle.js .
    the changes are reflected fine on the UCM, but once the UCM Server restated the changes are gone and the file revert back as is; without my changes.
    the code that i want to add is:
    if ((typeof Range !== 'undefined') && !Range.prototype.createContextualFragment) {
    Range.prototype.createContextualFragment = function(html) {
    var frag = document.createDocumentFragment();
    var div = document.createElement('div');
    frag.appendChild(div);
    div.outerHTML = html;
    return frag;
    i want to add it because i have a javascript error like this: Object doesn't support property or method 'createContextualFragment', this erro occured when the used version of Internet Explorer is V.9. ; no javascript errors appears on Version 8. when i add this piece of javascript to the bundle.js file, it the error is gone and everything goes fine, but as i said earlier after restarting the UCM the added javascript code is gone and disappear from the bundle.js file.
    For that reason i want to ask, is there is a way to keep my code and stay as is even after restarting? Or is the file uploaded on restart from another path?
    Any Suggestions?

    This is actually quite simple to explain:
    - domain_home\ucm\cs\weblayout\resources is a directory that holds runtime version of resources
    - if you want to make your changes persistent, you will need to do it in a source directory. In 11g there are two source directories; one for standard components, and the other for custom ones. You should use the latter
    - in fact, if you create a custom component with Component Wizard, make your changes there and activate the component, you should be done. The only another thing you should pay attention to is the loadOrder parameter of your resource - it should be higher to get applied.
