Documents stack

The documents stack opens from the dock with the folders in alphabetical order.
Is there any way to alter this so that the folders can be grouped in a custom order, to match the way I have them in Finder?
I can see there is a choice of name, date added, date modified, date created, or kind, but none of these suit me.
At least Mail folders can finally be moved out of Alphabetical order!

Those files are where MS stores important information, like your identities. Other applications will also install files in your Documents folder I have Office, Adobe, Quicken, Roxio Toast, etc. installed there,
Leave them alone. What I do to remedy the situation is create a folder within Documents called, "MyStuff". Then just drag "MyStuff" down to the right hand side of the Dock, to create a stack of that.
I also keep MyStuff on the sidebar of Finder. That way there is rarely any reason to go into the Documents folder.

  • Documents Stack Reappears in Dock after Restart

When I installed Leopard, it created the default dock, containing the basic applications and some stacks. One of those stacks was the Documents Stack, which I did not find useful, so I dragged it out of the dock and poof it was gone. But when I restarted, it was back in my dock.
Now, every time I restart I have to remove it again, but it always "respawns" upon restart again.
How can I permanently destroy that persistent stack?

Does it remember if you add an application or a different folder to the Dock? If not, it sounds like your dock plist is hosed. Launch /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and type:
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.db
    killall Dock
When the dock comes back up, it should be back at its default config. Set it up how you want and then restart and see if the problem persists.

  • "Downloads" and "Documents" Stacks in the Dock  10.6 Snow Leopard

Is there a way to get the little blue folder icons that say "Downloads" and "Documents" to appear on the stacks in the dock instead of a thumbnail type icon of the first document or download in the stack? 10.6 Snow Leopard.  The Apple Web page describing "Stacks" as a new part of Snow Leopard shows them.

Yes, right click (control click) on the icon and select Display as Folder.

  • "Recent Documents" stack appeared today... from where?

On my MacBook Pro, a new stack called "Recent Documents" appeared this morning. I like it, but where did it come from? Right-clicking on it gives me options to make it Recent Apps or Recent Servers, or Favorite Volumes or Favorite Items.
There is no folder on my Mac with that name. How did it get there? And if I accidentally poof it, how will I ever get it back?

There is no folder. It is an undocumented feature of the Dock that can be activated by the Teminal command, or by a third party utility that runs that command, or simply does what the command does, to wit, adds a certain bit to the Dock's plist file. I suppose it is related to Smart Folders, which also don't exist as actual entities, but only as snippets of code. No actual folders are involved, just a tiny bit of code that in effect tells part of the system to do certain things. The misnamed Smart Folders tell the Finder to open a window and display a list of items matching the criteria in the code snippet. The same is true for the Recent Items stack, except in this case the Dock has an entry in its plist file that tells it to use its stacks ability to display recent items.

  • Is there a way to sort subfolders in stacks by kind?

I would like to sort the subfolders in my document stack by kind. I know that I can right click on it and choose "sort by --> kind" but this only does it for the opening folder. As I get deeper into subfolders it only sorts by name and will not stick to my "sort by kind" preference. Any way to fix this?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the response Camino fan.
Unfortunately setting these preferences in the finder haven't carried over into stacks on the dock. My finder organizes by kind as you described, but even after doing so, the stacks continue to sort by the default (name).
    Any other ideas?

  • Customising Stacks

Under 'Document Stacks' we read the following: 'To customise a stack, position the pointer over the stack icon and hold down the mouse button until a menu appears.' This does not work, at least it does not work with the mousepad on my macbook pro. Do I need to use a cable/wireless mouse. I am away from home at the moment and don't have a mouse.
    Thanks

Ha good computing! Here is a very nice trick if you are feeling adventurist, to enable *stack highlighting*.
You only need to execute these two lines of *Terminal commands* to make it happens <code>copy and paste what is in-between here</code>:
    <code>defaults write com.apple.dock mouse-over-hilite-stack -boolean YES</code>
    <code>killall Dock</code>
    ref: http://www.usingmac.com/2009/9/7/daily-trick-37
This is very sweet addition to the experience.
    cheers!

  • "Recent Items" stack in Dock

I typed the required commands into Terminal to create a Recent Items stack in the Dock, which I then limited to recent documents.
One morning when I booted, the Recent Documents stack was missing. I dragged the "empty space" where it had been out of the Dock and tried retyped the Terminal commands to regain the recent items stack:
    first, <defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }’>
and then, when that was not successful, <defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-ad>.
I followed each one with "killall Dock".
All that happened, both times, was the disappearance of ALL my stacks from the Dock.
Am I typing these commands wrong, or what? I also notice that sometimes after typing one into Terminal, my original prompt doesn't reappear but only a < sign.
What should I do to get my recent items stack back?

    Hi,
    1) go to terminal
    2) type in pico
    3) type in the following script (or copy it!)
    !#/bin/bash
    *defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'*
    *killAll Dock*
    4) save file as recents.sh
    5) give it executable rights *chmod u+x recents.sh*
    6) execute it ./recents.sh
    7) keep the file for later use (if you want)

  • Howto exclude file types from recent documents

I'm using a recent documents stack but it will display a lot of garbage, so the real documents i' want to see there disappear quickly. for instance it would be useful to exclude access to:
    - system properties
    - zip, tar, tgz, rar etc kinda files
    - dmg
    etc...
Is there a way of setting up which file types i want to keep there and which files i don't want?

  • Stacks on dock

    Hi everyone
I'm a recent switcher... about 5 weeks ago i got my first macbook pro for school and im pretty used to it already but ive noticed that the folders inside the document stack is disorganized. For example i have an AP subfolder inside the document stacks and when i open the stack to see the contents the files inside are disorganized. I want to organize them by date but i seem not to be able to do this at all. I want the files inside to be organied by date, with the most current file on the top and the oldest one on the bottom. Thanks
I'll show some screenshots of this

  • Problem when sorting docs stack by name

In my Documents folder in the Finder, my documents and folders are arranged alphabetically. I have prefaced the names of frequently accessed folders with a ~ which puts them at the top of the list.
Why, when the items are sorted by name in my Documents stack, are the items prefaced with a ~ at the end of the list? How can I get them listed first the way they are in the Finder?

the same thing happens to me. seems to be a bug. the following workaround works for me. change ~ to space in the names of those folders. then change the sort order in the stack from name to something else and back to name.

  • Application icons not showing in a stack

I have dragged my Applications folder to the doc, so I can use the stack feature. However not all the application icons display in the stack, anyone know why this would happen?
It's not all of them just Delicious Library and Fetch (so far).

Does the icon in the lower-right corner say "2 more in Finder" or something like that? I think a Stack can only show a certain number of files; then it directs you to the Finder to see the ones that were bumped off. For instance, my Documents stack displays 62 files, with a link "55 more in Finder" in the corner.
