Docx to epub

Let me start by dating this.  June of 2013.
Does anyone know of a current and great method to convert docx files to epub for upload to ibooks?
I have seen older posts and methods (1-2 years) and they seem very convoluted.  I would imagine MS or someone would have created better conversion techniques.
Aspose supposedly works OK, but seems to be spammy.
AVS has a file converter but costs money..... On the flip side I just checked out their site and for $59 you get access to all of their software for an unlimited amount of time. hmm. that is tempting.
Other ideas?

OK great for app.unpackageUCF () for file. IDML,. Epub and. Docx.
For app.packageUCF (): ok for. IDML and epub for docx make a mistake in the opening word corrects and goes!
But most important is the opening. Docs. IDML and redo the IDML.

  • Indexing issues

    I'm currently using NeoOffice and it has just gone belly-up on me so I'm thinking of going for iWork and Pages.
    I am writing the 3rd edition of my book: "High-Speed Photography - it's not Rocket Science" and need to generate an epub file, decent image indexes and decent table of contents lists.
    In NeoOffice there's a bug whereby it puts each image into a single-cell table and inserts the caption below the image. When I try to change the caption, it adds the whole lot to a new single-cell table so I end up with nested tables and nested captions. It indexes the captions very nicely however.
    In NeoOffice the Table of Contents indexes very well with all the chapter headings being listed nicely - until I convert the document to .DOC or .DOX upon which it loses the entries in the Table of Contents and refuses to regenerate it. This means that I have to upload everything to my publisher as a PDF file. When I'm uploading PDFs of 137MB, that's just not funny. Even with DSL it takes about half an hour!
    Now you have the background of what I'm trying to do, will iWork and Pages do the biz for me?
    I need to be able to upload my book with indexed images and indexed chapters in a .DOC/.DOCX or EPUB format.
    I'm using OSX Leopard and don't really want to change over to OSX Snow Leopard nor to Lion.

    Hi,
    I've the same problem. Mdworker crashes while indexing the hd for spotlight.
    -> Exited abnormally: Bus error
    As far as I see, the problem appeared first, after I imported my old user account from Tiger using the Migration Assistent. Might be a problem with old indexes or somewhat? No solution yet.

  • Pdf/epub/docx reader and editor software for nokia...

    As a user of asha 311 I was kind of disappointed for their latest SW Update. Please nokia consider putting pdf/epup/docx reader and editor for your next SW UPDATE. Almost all android phone can read pdf file but asha cant so please consider including this. For me if you nokia made it its much safer for us user to download it. .less risk in our phone. I have been trying other pdf reader like in your ovi store its ok but not great it doesnt read all pdf and its kinda not convinient. Hope you consider.

    Well not really nokia has used pdf reader and editor on their older unit before..hmn i thinks its nokia e40 or something. and its already part of the phone app. so why not put it in their asha series as a update..really they should put more useful updates..

  • HT4168 epub: I'd like to create chapters for the TOC but don't want the new chapter to begin on a new page. I'd like it to begin on the same page as the prior chapter. How can I do that?

    How can I do this? I currently have my TOC chapters listed as Apples, Oranges, and so on.  But my text chapters begin something like this:
    1
    Apples
    2
    Oranges
    I have "Apples" with header 1, "Oranges" with header 1, etc., so that very nicely in the TOC it is listing my topics as the chapters. However, within the body of the document, 1 appears on one page and "Apples" begins at the top of a new page, separated from "1"; 2 appears one one page and "Oranges" appears at the top of the next page (separated from the "2), and so on.
    Because of the way the book is structured, I need to have the chapter numbers on a top line and the chapter topic beneath it. (The book is further subdivided, such as 1.3a, 1.3b, etc.)
    What I would like is for the TOC to indicate my chapters as Apples, Oranges, etc., but for the chapter text to begin as indicated above.
    How can I do this?  Thanks.

    Peter, I styled the wording of the chapter title (e.g. apples) with my heading1 styling and my sub-chapter titles were heading2. The text is a different font, different color, different size, different everything.  It seems that the epub program has an automatic format to start a new page with each new header. That's what I'm trying to work around. (Originally I styled both the numeral and the chapter title as "heading 1" and it gave each a different page!)
    I am in the process of removing all headers and styling everything manually (which is how it was originally) just to avoid this problem.
    I'm having my e-book done through a publisher (this will be self-published), so I'll be giving them a .docx and they'll convert it to .html (filtered) then .epub. so I need something that creates my Table of Contents as I'd like it, without messing up the text of the book.
    I can give them a list of what I want in the Table of Contents, and have them manually do it, but the TOC may or may not come out how I want it to come out. My preference is to have something automatic. I wanted the sub-units (heading 2) in the TOC but that will never work since I have over 200 of them and it's too much for them to do manually.  It's a very slow process.

  • Converting a PDF to an EPUB using InDesign

    I have four finished books in PDF files, totaling 1857 pages including over 600 photographs, which I need to convert to EPUB files in InDesign.  I used a script to import all of the pages of one book into InDesign into a document reflecting the page and margin parameters of the original Microsoft Word document file.  The imported PDF looked perfect in InDesign once I switched to a high-quality display performance in the View menu.  However, when I exported the document into an EPUB file, I ran into two problems that I cannot fix.
    Problem #1:  Both the Digital Editions EPUB reader and the Nook recognize the EPUB document as having only two pages (displaying 1 / 2 on the screen, even though I can scroll to or page to all 430 pages in both Digital Editions and the Nook.  This happens despite the fact that the correct number of pages correctly displays in the InDesign document settings.
    Problem #2:  The document text in the EPUB file is so poorly rendered it is almost illegible.  Each letter is chunky and fragmented and partially pixelated.  However, the same text in InDesign perfectly reflects the high quality fonts used in the original PDF and Microsoft Word Documents.
    I can find no documentation in the InDesign help system to explain why I am getting these results.  When I cut and paste a few pages of text from the PDF into an InDesign layout, it looks fantastic when I export it to an EPUB. But the text in the script loaded PDF pages look horrible.  And for what it is worth, Problems #1 and #2 persisted, even when bypassed the script and I hand placed a half dozen pages from the PDF into an InDesign document and exported them to an EPUB file.
    Also, if I export back to a PDF from InDesign, the text looks perfect and the page numbering is correct in Digital Editions.  The only reference I found related to InDesign text quality on export  is in Object Export Options, but they remain disabled to me.
    And as a final test, I script loaded all 710 pages of the indesign_cs5_help.pdf to see if it would display the same problems. Not surprisingly, the text was just as poorly rendered in Digital Editions, which then displayed the first page of the document as 1 / 3 instead of 1 / 710.
    Is there some method I can use to fix these problems?  Or am I going to have to recreate the layout for all 1857 pages painstakingly object by object in InDesign?
    Thanks for all assistance.

    I have managed to work out the entire process over the past three weeks both working with InDesign with EPUB and by helping a friend post a series of books directly from Microsoft Word via MOBI to Amazon.  I will discuss the latter process first to point out the inherent problems with the direct approach, so the reasons for using InDesign become more apparent.
    From Microsoft Word
    First, I recommend you reformat your Word document into a smaller book size to simulate the maximum text display you will get on a Kindle (3.0 in. x 5.3 in. margins) or Nook (3.3 in. X 5.5 in. margins).  Next, make sure you are using style tags and paragraph and page layout options everywhere (no tabs or spaces in formatting), and a TOC object for the table of contents.  All photos or images must be centered, and if you want them to have horizontal width, then stretch them from side to side.  Leave your cover photo out of the document, and add it via the author panel specifying you want the uploaded cover image to be used inside the book.  This will assure that the cover photo will correctly fill the frame.
    Next save your DOCX document as a FILTERED HTML.  Then close Word and load the HTML into the Kindle Previewer to review to verify your images are correctly displayed.  When you do this, it creates a MOBI file that you can upload to a Kindle to view first hand.  Then when you are satisfied with the results, you can upload this MOBI book file to Amazon Authors Direct.  The upload dialog does not say it will accept a MOBI file, but the HTML file it recommends does not contain any image data.  As it accepts an EPUB file, it only made sense it would accept the MOBI file, and it does (even the Amazon technical staff did not know this).
    Using InDesign
    The results of going from Word direct to MOBI are far from perfect.  But I would judge they are minimally acceptable.  However, if you want complete control of a book’s layout I recommend going the InDesign route.  Without exception, the pages, text and images laid out in InDesign are (or will be soon) perfectly reflected on the Nook and Kindle.  Granted, it takes time to lay out a book page by page, but if you do it right by using the InDesign paragraph and object styles, the process goes quickly.
    Create an InDesign Book with each chapter a separate document in the book to ensure chapters start on a new page.
    Make document pages small to maintain the look and feel.  They need not be 3.5 x 5.5.  I used a 5 x 7 inch document page and everything looked fine on the Kindle and Nook.  Get used to the idea that the text will always flow differently based on the text size selected, So only worry about inline image placement, chapter headings and such, and leave the rest to fate.
    After you get one chapter finished, use it to create a template document to use for subsequent chapter documents to facilitate laying out your book.  A photo in a graphic frame with an anchored caption text box is easily copied and pasted elsewhere to standardize all image objects.  Be sure to synchronize styles and swatches for each new chapter added.
    InDesign footnoting did not work correctly in the EPUB for me, but I found it easy to use the hyperlink system to emulate footnoting functionality.  By placing the footnotes at the back of the book and implementing a hyperlink back to the inclusion point of the footnote in a chapter, the reader can use the footnote pages like a hot index as well as a hot footnote.
    When generating an EPUB,
    Select No cover image
    Select ordering same as Article panel
    Set Book margin to 0
    Image size relative to page
    Contents XHTML
    Use InDesign TOC (set style used)
    Generate CSS with all boxes checked.
    One thing to be aware of is that the digital readers will read the HTML page objects left to right then top to bottom, so I recommend the following:
    In InDesign Guides and Pasteboard preferences, set the Snap to Zone to 1 to guarantee all page objects line up on the left margin exactly.  Manually adjust each object box X location as necessary.  Lock object when completed to minimize inadvertent movement
    Always guarantee all text box objects stretch from left to right margin.  Use the Indent controls to vary text placement and make this a new paragraph style.
    Always anchor a photo (inset in a graphic frame) to a caption text box stretched margin-to-margin to ensure the photos will not sink to the bottom of a page in the EPUB.
    Photos snapped to each margin will display full width and will display larger when the Kindle is rotated 90 degrees.
    Add 0.25 in, Space After on the last paragraph before an image and 0.25 in, Space Before on the first paragraph after an image to create a bit of white space around the image and caption.
    Always use the Article list to verify the placement of page objects in each chapter document.  I have had a few images sink when the article list is generated despite all the above precautions.  But it is easy to manually make adjustments.
    Kindle Tools
    Amazon released a series of tools and PDF documents a few weeks ago that greatly simplify the process of posting a book for sale via Direct Publishing.  That said, rabbit holes abound waiting to catch anyone who is not already familiar with HTML and document layout software technologies.  So the non-tech masses should be wary.
    The Amazon Tools are at https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/help?topicId=A3IWA2TQYMZ5J6 .
    KindleGen v2.4 – a command line tool used to build eBooks that can be sold through Amazon's Kindle platform. This tool is best for publishers and individuals who are familiar with HTML and want to convert their HTML, XHTML, XML (OPF/IDPF format), or ePub source into a Kindle Book.
    Kindle Previewer v2.4 -- a tool that emulates how books display on Kindle devices and applications. Kindle Previewer makes it easy to preview the layout of a book and make sure its text displays properly for any orientation or font size. This tool is recommended for publishers, eBook conversion companies, and individual authors in combination with KindleGen to produce the highest quality Kindle books. It is available for both Windows and Mac OS X platforms.
    Kindle Plugin for Adobe InDesign® v0.96 (Beta) --  a plug-in which can be used to convert documents or books created in Adobe InDesign® to Kindle format.  For more information on creating books for the Kindle platform from Adobe InDesign®, please see the Publishing Guidelines for Kindle Plugin for Adobe InDesign® available for download in PDF, Kindle and Adobe InDesign® formats.
    I found that the Previewer and the DOS KindleGen produce identical MOBI files, so I recommend the previewer for its ease of use.  After extensive testing I have found the Kindle InDesign plugin will perfectly convert the text from InDesign; however, it fails to size, place and display photographs and captions in all cases.  It also does not render the InDesign TOC correctly.  But remember, it is Beta software .  I sent in a bug list to Amazon via the Export Book to Kindle dialog in InDesign and never got a response, but presumably someone is working on the problems and will eventually get them fixed.  On the other hand, currently the Previewer perfectly displays photographs in a MOBI file when the InDesign EPUB file is fed into it; and the only problem with the text is that the line spacing is incorrect so paragraph lines are somewhat scrunched together.  While this is not a problem for developing a book, I would wait until the final release of the Kindle Plugin for InDesign before generating and publishing a MOBI book.
    I hope this helps.

  • Why is my epub not indenting correctly

    I used place to import a .docx file to InDesign. I mapped the Styles from word to some indesign styles in my template.
    Mac OS 10.6, InDesign CC, Word 2011
    The style normal indents .3 inch at the start of a paragraph. It looks fine in the program. ~6 characters
    When I export as an epub, and then open in the Kindle Viewer (after conversion to .mobi), the indent is very small, only about three characters. I also emailed to my Kindle Ap on my iPhone and iPad, and it shows the same thing - small indents.
    I tried increasing the indent distance in the style, and it doesn't change how it looks at all in the Kindle Ap.
    Please help! Any ideas how to fix? I am almost ready to publish, but this one issue is holding me back. Thank you in advance.

    I'd ask in the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing forums. Here's a link to the Formatting forum:

  • How do I copy text from an epub book?

    how do I copy text from an epub book?

    Just some observations.
    PDF page content that is an image (and music notes may very well be that in a given PDF) then all that can be exported is the image.
    Only an image editor can "edit" such eh.
    As to textual content - once in TXT, RTF, DOC or DOCX yes, expect to have to do "cleanup"
    Of course there's the old school alternative that is always available.
    Paper copy beside you as you transcribe to a fresh word processing file.

    What types of files can I upload to convert to an eBook?
    Before we can convert your manuscript to an eBook in EPUB file format, it must be saved as a properly formatted Microsoft Word (DOC or DOCX), Rich Text Format (RTF), or Open Office (ODT) file.
    For more information about file types compatible for use in our EPUB converter, see Supported File Types.
    Can I use the same file I uploaded for my print book to create my eBook?
    You can certainly create a copy of your print book manuscript file to use as a starting point; however, eBooks are formatted very differently than their print book cousins.
    Your original manuscript was probably created to closely resemble the format of a print book, which requires, margins, a table of contents, headers, footers, page numbers, page breaks, etc. eBooks, on the other hand, are composed of reflowable text, do not have pages as we think of them, and include an electronic table of contents allowing readers to navigate to sections or chapters.
    For more information about formatting your manuscript, see Prepare Your Manuscript for eBook Conversion.
    What is an eBook Marketing Image?
    Think of the eBook Marketing Image as the eBook’s “cover.” It is the image shoppers see when browsing online for eBooks and on their eReader’s “bookshelf” when they purchase and download your work.
    When creating and editing your Marketing Image, you should design the image to capture a shopper’s attention. The art and text should be clear, crisp, and easily read when viewed as a thumbnail.
    The Marketing Image consists only of the front cover art, which should include the book title and author name. Unlike print books, there is no back cover or dust jacket flaps on an eBook cover that can be used to provide author information or a synopsis of your work. Therefore the Marketing Image could be the first, and last, impression a shopper has of your work.
    The Marketing Image must be created to the following specifications:
    Dimensions: at least 612 x 792 pixels (8.5” x 11” or 21.59 cm x 27.94 cm)
    Resolution: 72dpi or higher to provide a clear image when viewed in multiple sizes
    Do I need an ISBN for my eBook?
    You do not need an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) if you only want to sell your eBook in the Lulu Marketplace.
    You will need an ISBN if you want to sell your eBook on sites other than the Lulu Marketplace, such as the Kindle Store, the Apple iBookstore, the Kobo Store, and the Barnes & Noble NOOK® Bookstore.
    Please Note: All eBooks published with an ISBN and set to a status of Private or General Access qualify for retail distribution. For more information about this process, see eBook Distribution FAQ.
    Can I use the same ISBN for my eBook as I used for my print book?
    No. The ISBN identifies the title, author, publisher, and format of a book. Therefore, a different ISBN is required for each format (hardcover, paperback, eBook, etc.).
    How much should I charge for my eBook?
    Only you know the worth of your work.
    You can get an idea of a competitive price range by studying your intended market. How much are authors in your genre or area of expertise charging for their work? Do you have the same name recognition in your field? Are you just getting started as a writer and want to get your work into as many hands as possible? Is a print version of your book also available for purchase and if so, do you want to offer a discount on the eBook version?
    Rather than answering your question with even more questions, here are few points to consider when pricing your eBook:
    Lulu Marketplace
    You can offer your eBook as a free download or sell it for any price greater than or equal to $0.99.
    Important Note: The Lulu creator revenue split is calculated on income above $0.99. For example, if you charge $2.99 for your eBook, your income for each eBook sold in the Lulu Marketplace will be $1.80, which is 90% of $2.00. For the mathematically inclined: Lulu Marketplace eBook Creator Revenue = .90(price – $0.99)
    iBookstore or Barnes & Noble NOOK® Bookstore:
    Retail channels also have rules governing acceptable minimum and maximum list prices. Each channel may adjust your price to comply with their pricing policies. Use this eBook Retailer Price & Revenue Calculator to see what your eBook will sell for on these retailers' sites and estimate the revenue you will earn from each sale.
    Amazon Kindle and Kobo Bookstores
    Some retailers operate as resellers. This means they pay the wholesale price to a distributor when your eBook sells. Since these retailers are buying your book from a middleman at a set price, they can resell your eBook at any price they like, including a discounted price. Under the reseller model you will always make the same revenue as displayed in the retail pricing step for each book sold by that retailer, regardless of the sale price.
    Once your eBook is published, you can view and edit your eBook's retail pricing and distribution options from the My Projects > Manage button.
    IMPORTANT NOTES: When you select Kindle and/or Kobo distribution, Barnes & Noble converts to the reseller revenue model. At this time Amazon Kindle and Kobo distribution are not available to authors residing in Australia.
    Why can’t I sell my PDF eBook on sites other than Lulu.com?
    While PDFs are simple to create and great for reading on a large monitor or laptop screen, they are usually created as fixed text documents (i.e. the reader cannot choose the font or font size). As such, PDFs are not easily read on smaller screens such as those found on eReader devices.
    Due to this limitation, our retail partners prefer eBooks in EPUB file format. These types of eBooks allow text to be optimized for all displays and reading on both large screens and small devices such as smartphones and eReaders.

  • How do I change the way the title/author appear and is there any way to remove pages on EPUBs?

    Hi all--
    I am having a really hard time--I am trying to transfer EPUBs from my Win 7 comp to my Nook Tablet. I bought a lot of books from several non-BN sites because they were lots cheaper and were also sold in bundles--but the site was messed up and sent the books in PDF form rather than EPUB.  PDF files won't read like a regular book on my Nook Tablet, so my friend offered to convert them to EPUB for me.
    Most of the books turned out fine, but some of them now have a few extra pages at the beginning before the cover image and the correct title and author are not displaying--it seems to instead show the filepath where the file was saved on m friend's computer (C:\My Computer/Documents and Settings...etc.)
    So, what I would like to do is be able to edit the EPUB files so I can delete the extra pages at the beginning so the correct cover image will be displayed and to be able to change the file's data sp it will show (and be searchable by) the correct title and author.
    I am new to all this, so I appreciate any help you can offer.  Thank you SO much for your help!!
    --Jamie
    P.S.  Having the title and author show up correctly so they are searchable and appear in the correct place on my Nook Tablet is the top priority--correct cover pages would be nice aesthitically, but it is not that important.
    ****ALSO--does anyone know of an app or anything for the Nook Tablet that would allow PDF files to be read just like an EPUB/B&N=purchased book?  Currently when I open a PDF, it shows the page in TINY print--you can use pinching to zoom in, but then the file enlarges so it is bigger than the screen, making it very hard to read.  I can't figure out any way to enlarge the text but still fits the page like an EPUB does, so I'm wondering if there's an app that would do that--it's hard because you can't try apps before you buy them and I can't teel if they will work from the descriptions.

    For sideloaded content the nook pulls the metadata from ePub file itself.  I would suggest looking at a program like Sigil or Calibre that will let you edit the metadata in the book to make it appear like you want.
    For the PDF vs ePub - No, that's the way PDFs work (think of them as graphics, not text), wheres ePubs are Web Pages - so  no you can't them to behave exactly alike without converting the files.

  • Smart quotes and em-dashes in epub file

    When I create an epub file from my InDesign book file, I find that sometimes (not always, thought!) my smart quotes and em-dashes revert to gibberish.
    For example, when I open the epub file, the em-dash is fine, but in chapter 2, it changes to —.
    Does anyone know how I might correct this?
    Thanks so much!

    It sounds like somethings wrong with the chapter's character encoding.  The character encoding is declared in the header of the ePub HTML. From ID it's:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
    This test has UTF-8 declared in the first line of its source code:
    http://www.zenodesign.com/forum/encodetest/UTF8.html
    And this has no encoding
    http://www.zenodesign.com/forum/encodetest/None.html
    Most browsers let you override or choose the character set, so in Safari if you set the character set to View>Text Encoding>default, you'll see a difference between the above links, but if you set it to Unicode (UTF-8) they both display correctly. In FireFox it's View>Character Encoding.
    You can check and edit the contents of the .epub file by changing the extension from .epub to .zip, and then extracting the contents.

  • Can someone help me understand how ePub CSS @fontface Unicode characters are supported in td , but not in div or other elements?

    Hi,
    I'm working on a project to convert several hundred thousand life sciences articles into epub format, and we have run in to a problem with character entities.
    Being that these are scientific articles, the characters are from a wide range of Unicode charts, and are essential to transmitting the meaning of the data.
    The problem is that in my epub, the character entity inside a table data cell is rendering the @font-face correctly, but inside any other HTML element, the character renders as an empty box on our ipad2s.
    I've placed pre tags in hopes that the unicode will not be rendered in your browser here. The code point in this example is x1d542 just in case.
    So inside div, we see boxes, inside td, we see the character rendered properly.
    <pre>
          <div class="stix">Let &#x1d542; be a field, which will be either the complex numbers &#x02102; or the finite field &#x1d53d;</div>
          <table id="t31" rules="all">
            <tr>
              <td>&#x1d542;</td>
              <td class="stix">&#x1d542;</td>
              <td>U+1D542 MATHEMATICAL DOUBLE-STRUCK CAPITAL K </td>
            </tr>
    </pre>
    My CSS looks like this:
    <pre>
    @font-face {
        font-family: 'STIX';
        src: url('STIX-Regular.otf') format('opentype');
        font-weight: normal;

    @font-face {
        font-family: 'STIX-Math';
        src: url('STIXMath-Regular.otf') format('opentype');

    Is it possible that this is a rendering bug, because the character is rendering in the table cell, but not in other elements?
    Have I missed something obvious?
    Thanks,
    Abe

    I assume you are including the STIX font as part of your epub files?
    Perhaps the folks who do this blog might be able to help -- they have done some work with font embedding:

  • Can not open Word 2010 docx in Word 2013 from Outlook 2013 mail

    Hello,
    I got a mail on outlook with a word 2010 attachment in docx format.
    Open this attachment with double click will show only the welcome screen with the text Open in protected mode.
    With process monitor I could that word 2013 in an endless loop and tries to create the registry key
    "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Options\Vprsu" in an loop.
    The result is always ACCESS DENIED.
    When I create this key manually there will be an loop to create the registry key
    "HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\15.0\word\options\Assist".
    The result is always ACCESS DENIED.
    When I create this key manually. Word show the attachment immediatelly.
    Closing Word and open the attachment again will delete this registry key and the cycle starts again.
    Is there a hotfix available that will repair this?
    I think this is an error in word 2013 protected view.
    Disabling the protected view will help, but is not an good solution.
    Is there any other workarround?
    Screenshot from process monitor:
    Best Regards,
    Dieter

    This issue may occur if the default file associations for Word are damaged. You may repair Office 2013 to restore the file associations and check if that helps. Refer to the link below for more information. You may restart
    the computer once the repair is done.

    Note: Close all Office applications before you perform the repair.

  • Need text to speech in EPUB

    I need a conventional hardware / software solution so I can listen to, edit, cut and paste Epub books with DRM (from Library or purchased). Adobe Digital Editions isn't it! I am a student I need to be able to listen to a book, cut segments out and insert into my notes so I can listen to a review later and the files need to be available on my "mobile device" of choice.

    DRM can preclude much, if not all, of what you want to do. That is, sort of , the point of DRM. Restrictions are established by the publishing house.
    As a student there may be a staff member at the school who deals with issues such as you face.
    Perhaps a discussion will identify alternatives to DRM processed PDF.
    Keep in mind that the various alternatives used at schools, like Digital Editions consumed products, are not going to function on 'every' device.
    So, the "mobile device of my choice" may be unrealistic.
    Be well...

  • Problems with epub 3 and iBooks 2

    Problems with fixed layout epub 3 and iBooks version 2
    I am producing an epub 3 fixed layout ebook. My query is whether there is a known issue with epub 3 and the old version of iBooks - iBooks 2.
    The epub has passed verification with epubcheck 3.0.1 and I have viewed the file on my iPad with iBooks 3.2 as well as on iBooks on my Mac, and also through the Chrome browser using Readium. In all cases the layout is fine. But when the file is downloaded onto an old iPad using iBooks 2, the layout is all mixed up. The iPad says that its operating system of OS.5 is up-to-date , and will not allow it to be updated, and thus it's impossible to update iBooks to versions 3.
    So my question is whether this is a known issue with fixed layout epub 3 and versions 2 of iBooks, and if so whether there is a work around to allow fixed layout epub 3 to be read on iBooks2.

    Follow-up query: (apple-ibooks-display-options) file needed in epub 3??
    I tried adding the old (apple-ibooks-display-options) file to the META INF folder, as you used to for fixed layout epub 2, and the file displayed perfectly on the older version of iBooks, as well as on the latest iBooks. This leads me to ask whether you still need to add the 'apple-ibooks-display-options' file to epub 3, to make them readable on old versions of iBooks, or whether this indicates that some of the settings stating this is pre-paginated etc. are not entered correctly in the content.opf file, but I have checked this and I don't think so.
    Any advice on this would be very welcome.
