Dodge and burn plugin, how good is it?

Can some of you that are using the new dodge and burn plugin share some of your experiences. In the tutorial it looks pretty basic, direct and easy to perform. Also it seems pretty close to what I've been doing for the last 25 years in my b/w darkroom. I wonder if someone can say something about it's performance and the results, also on black and white images. How good is it? Could I leave PS out of my workflow as far as this tool is concerned? Thanks.

I've used this plugin many times and really like it especially for knocking down a distracting part or all of the background. I haven't used it so far on B&W images although I shoot quite a bit of B&W. I've found a couple of things - (1) be very careful about the strength setting because at 100% it's dead black and (2) I tend to use the Feathering once I've got my dodge or burn about where I want it. I'll open the brush size and with about a medium strength I'll "dust" the whole area I've worked. The feathering seems to blend everything so you don't have any harsh spots. The feathering does tend to add a small amount of "dodge" to what you've done so you may have to go back and redo the area(s). I would liken this to using a "pantyhose frame" rather than a paddle in the darkroom days. You remember that trick I'm sure. I don't have any reason to believe it won't work as well on B&W. I have found the eraser can save some work if you get a little heavy on the strength setting. Finally, I tend to take a long look at the work in full screen before I hit the save button - although you can go back into the Edit with Dodge and Burn and redo areas until you get what you want. Play with it and I think you'll agree it's a valuable tool.

I have Aperture 2.1.3. Should I have this plugin? If I should, I don't. Is there a place to download?
    Thnx.

  • Dodge  and burn tool

Well I have used the tool a couple of times and I just opened my aperture, and its suddenly gone...any reason why? Thats kind of weird

Never heard that one before. The dodge and burn plugin is actually part of the package in the applications folder so it's kind of hard to nuke it w/o blowing away aperture itself.
Hmmm, that is weird. I'll take a poke around and see if I can break it on purpose and get back.

  • Dodge and Burn

In Aperture 2 I could use the dodge and burn plug in to create a consistent totally white or totally black background to most any light color or dark color even if it was not consistently even in color. Example: I have a dark green sheet with folds, etc that are darker and lighter in a background. But when I try to make it totally evenly black in Aperture 3's dodge and burn it will not go totally and evenly black in the entire back ground even when I set the "amount" as high as it goes. Why? Second is there another way to accomplish this in Aperture 3?

Aperture 3 can make it sufficiently black, but you have to do it after the fact. Dodge and Burn were changed substantially between Aperture 2 and 3, and it is non-destructive in Aperture 3 (which is a significant… significant advantage).
Anyway, first, brush in the burn and get the mask as you want it. Once you're done, hit return (or 'A') or whatever.
Now, you'll see in the inspector there is a new item for "Burn" at the bottom. The default for amount is 0.4. Crank that slider to the right and you'll see you can turn it up a lot. It will also show you how good your mask is You may need to practice with the feather brush to optimize it.

  • Dodge and Burn Tool basicly stopped working.

For some reason the Dodge and Burn Tool in Lightrooom 5.4 basicly stopped working. It will only make a slight adjustment no matter how much I change the exposure value. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Do you have the flow and/or density of the Adjustment Brush set to a very low level?

  • Dodging and burning tool freeze up on CC 2104

I have recently subscribed to CC Photoshop 2104 and when using the burn tool the programme just hangs, or takes a very long time to complete the action. i have to close down lose my work and re-open. Dont know how to fix it, help?

I recognize that you want to use the Dodge and Burn tools for local tone adjustment, but it would be to your advantage to use another approach for dodge and burn. Consider this:
Dodge and burn, techniques that provide subtle local adjustments in the tone values of an image, are familiar to anyone who has worked in a film & paper darkroom. Photoshop’s similarly named tools have one notable shortcoming; each dodge or burn dab is incorporated into the image. This makes it impractical or impossible to undo one or more of the changes minutes later, when other dabs have been added elsewhere in the image. Instead, you must then pile correction on correction rather than modifying the original image values. It is an inefficient and often destructive procedure.
There is a better way – one that puts the dodge and burn adjustments on a separate layer where they may be seen at any time and each adjusted or even eliminated, returning the area to its original value – all without corrupting the original image. This is how to do it:
    1. Load a file to be retouched and add a blank layer by clicking on the Create a New Layer symbol at the bottom of the Layers panel to the left of the Trash. The blank layer is Layer 1.
    2. Choose Edit > Fill and from the double-arrow options of the Use field, choose 50% gray. Then click OK. The image area will become gray overall.
    3. Change the Blending mode in the Layers panel from Normal to Overlay. The Background image will return although you will be working on Layer 1.
    4. Do not use the Dodge and Burn tools. Choose the Brush tool and adjust its size by tapping either of the square brackets to the right of the P key on the keyboard. To adjust the Brush hardness – a soft edge is best for this -- hold down the Shift key as you continually strike the left the square bracket. Set the Opacity of the Brush in the Options bar at about 10%.
    5. Painting in white will Dodge (lighten) the area, Black will Burn (darken) the area. Strike the D key to place Black as the Foreground color and White as the Background color. To transpose them stroke the X key. Dab or stroke with the Black to slowly add density. To lighten an area, dab or stroke with White. Although the image will reflect the changes, they are being recorded on Layer1 and may be viewed by turning off the eye in the Background layer. Best of all: to undo any tone adjustment and return the area to its original value, simply return that area to 50% by cloning from an adjacent unretouched area in Layer 1.

  • CS5 dodge and burn overkill

I don't know if anyone else has this problem but, since upgrading from CS4 to CS5 I've noticed a big difference in the dodge and burn tools.  In CS4 I'd always set them at 10% so that I'd get subtle changes - gradually building up to how I wanted the changes to look.  Now, even setting as low as 5% the changes are drastic, especially the dodge tool.  Yes, I have Protect Tones selected.
    Any ideas?

Control-Alt-Shift after launch seems to have fixed it for me too.
    Deleting the file "Adobe Photoshop X64 CS5 Prefs.psp" on it's own didn't.
1% still seems a bit darker than I remember, but since you guys haven't made any changes, it must be my imagination  ;-)

  • Dodge and Burn on RAW images

Looking to start using RAW files more often to process my images.
Tried to use the dodge tool with a RAW file over the weekend and recieved a notification saying somthing along the lines of "Cannot use this function with a 16bit file, must convert to 8bit"
I also recieved a similar message when trying to use the magic brush tool.
I would like to be able to adjust exposure, color, contrast (clarity) etc. when working with a RAW file. Would like to be able to adjust these parameters using the select tool, and would also like to be able to "brush" theses adjusments on. Also, if there is a Gradual ND filter function available, i would like to know where to find it.
Is it possible to do these things (with a RAW image) using PSE? If so, how?
Or do I have to purchase Lightroom if i want to work with RAW images?
Thanks in advance for the help!

I don't believe you can dodge and burn on a RAW in PSE.
You can do it in the PSE Editor, after converting the file to 8 bits. For dodge and burn, there's probably no noticeable difference between doing it 8 bits vs 16bits. However, I would definitely advise you to do as much editing at 16bits before you switch to 8bits, because you can't switch back.
You could, if you want, use Lightroom to dodge and burn RAW photos.
The Magic Brush tool won't work on RAWs in PSE, you'll have to convert to 8bits; and this tool doesn't exist in Lightroom.

  • Dodge and burn: wysiwyg...????

    Hi,
I wonder whats going on here. Or maybe I miss something with the presets.
After using dodge and burn ( and more within this plugin like saturate, sharpen or contrast) I save the changes and then find a tiff file in the stack connected to the master and versions in Aperture itself. Every time I find this tiff considerably differs from the image I saved in d and b. The changes I made in light and dark, but also the contrast and (de-) saturation really pops up different as from what I have seen before saving. Could somebody help me here?

Are you using a MacBook Pro by chance? And, are you using an external display?
There has been some chatter on several forms about color profile inconsistencies between the main display and the external display.
...a shot in the dark for you
    Best,

  • Dodge and burn requirements

    Hi,
I've downloaded Aperture 2 trial version to check out the dodge and burn plug in, however it is inactive.
Don't know how to fix this problem.
Is it possible that I need the Leopard?
    Regards
    Maciek

Obviously my mistake, sorry. I really did try to find something.
Searching the Aperture online help system returns only a glossary entry for "dodge" or "burn." I find no indications of a tool being available and I don't see what looks like a dodge/burn tool in any of my views.
Still looking, will fun to find one that I can use without going to Photoshop.

  • Is there a way to enable the "protect tones" box while working in Lab mode for dodging and burning?

Is there a way to enable the "protect tones" box while working in Lab  Color mode for dodging and burning?

Don't think so. Those algorithms are built around the RGB color model as far as I know and there is no way to achieve the same result in other color modes. It may not be programmaticalyl and matehmatically impossible, but it's probably too complicated for a quick solution due to constant color space conversion math getting involved.

  • Dodge and burn , can't save a big tiff.

Hi, I'm trying to save a tiff of 137 MB that I've worked on in dodge and burn but already three times I get the message it can't be saved and aperturte should be quitted and restarted (?) Someone can help with this one?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Clem,
Indeed I was low on spare space (10% left) so I changed that back to a save 25% of my HD. It doesn't help me out though; still getting this message after trying to save the tiff........

  • Stripes on sides when applying dodge and burn?  (Sony A7R + Aperture 3.5.1 + OS 10.9.1)

Hello, I'm finding an odd behavior when I apply the dodge and burn filters to my RAW images (taken by a Sony A7R) in Aperture 3.5.1. Basically, the filters will successfully cover almost all of the image, except for the right and left edges, almost like the filter has been cropped. For example, if the image is a 3x2 aspect ratio, lets just say the filters are only applied to the center of the image, as if the aspect ratio were 1x1.  It's subtle because the filters are quite faint, but it's clearly a problem when you look at the final image. Very odd, and even more odd because it only happens sometimes.  For example, if I crop the original 36MP file, then the filters work properly.  It seems that the issue only occurs when I try to apply the filter to the original 36MP sized image.  Also, as a note, the issue occurs in the Aperture interface window (maybe you'd call that the preview window) and it's also visible on the final exported JPEG and TIFF files.  Could be an Aperture issue I guess, or even an A7R or Mavericks specific thing?  Thanks for your time!

Have you checked by enabling "Color Overlay", where the brush will be applied? You could have enabled a filter on the brush, e.g. "Midtones".
For example, with "Color Overlay" enabled, I can see, that the Burn brush will work only on the darker regions, if set like in the example below:

  • Dodge and Burn Stopped Working

My dodge and burn tools have stopped working. If some one could help me find out why this might be? My photoshop (CS6) is new and was only installed yesterday. I edited some photos yesterday and the dodge and burn was working but now it is not.

make sure you have a layer highlighted in the layers pallet that can be dodged/burned (they may not work on some type of layers, modes)
    or try reset the tool:

  • Snow Leopard and Dodge and Burn

Since installing Snow Leopard the Dodge and Burn plug-in that comes with Aperture does not work properly. I am getting double and flickering cursors for the area of the brush strokes. I use a Wacom tablet.

Right. I am having the same problem with saving PS files back to Aperture. I found a simple workaround. Go back to Aperture and highlight an image other then the one you want to save from PS and it will save back to Aperture just fine.
For those using Nikon Capture NX 2, images won't even load. Why is it so hard for Apple and Nikon to work together? It goes both ways. When a new Nikon raw format comes along, Adobe supports it the day it is released. Apple takes forever. And now, Apple releases a new version of their operating system and the message from Nikon is that they are looking into it but can not promise a solution. C'mon Nikon, a large percentage of Nikon users work on Macs. Of those, some are professionals. If you want your software taken seriously, support it properly.
