Dodge Tool - Whitening the Background

I'm using Photoshop Elements 10 -dodge tool to whiten the background of my product pictures. I highlight the background all white, and upload the pic to my website. The next day some spots in the background goes back to gray. Why is this and how can I avoid it?  Thanks.
Here is a sample picture with the same problem: http://chakarr-jewelry.com/silver-luxe/tree-of-life-quartz-earrings

As a preliminary step for this picture, go to Enhance menu>Adjust lighting>Brightness/contrast, and boost the contrast slightly.
Duplicate the background layer, shut off the visibilityof the background layer by clicking on the eye icon in the layers palette, work on background copy layer
Access the Magic wand tool from the toolbox, and on the tool's option bar, set the tolerance to 20 (you may have to experiment with this number), check "Contiguous". Click on an area of the background, and hit delete on the keyboard. You will see a checkerboard pattern, denoting transparency. Click on other areas to delete the background. When I finished there remained a small background area in the 6 o'clock position, and I got rid of it with the Eraser tool.
Place a blank layer between the background and the background copy layers, and fill this with white (Edit>fill layer>Contents:white)
You should have 3 layers: Background, the white layer, layer with jewelry at top)

  • Why does the eyedropper tool set the background color swatch instead of the foreground?

Whenever I try to use the eyedropper tool in Photoshop CS5, the eyedroper sets the background color instead of the foreground. I know you can swap the colors with the arrows, but Photoshop used to be able to just put the color in the foreground swatch without me doing any extra manual work. How do I restore it?

Click on Windows and color.  There is a setting there to change from
foreground to background.  The one with the box around it is the default setting.

  • The eraser tool and the background it produces?

    1. Why does the eraser sometimes erase with white vs. the checkered background?
    2. Does the checkerboard mean that the background will be fully transparent?
    3. How do you switch between checkerboard and white backgrounds for the eraser?
    Thanks in advance.

Erasing on a layer will produce transparency. Erasing on a flattened image will produce white (or the background color)

  • Change the background with a bunch of kids? Quirky quick selection tool?

Main Objective:  How can I change the background behind a bunch of kids? My quick selection tool is quirky! Like the HS kids in the pic….
The 2nd photo is what I am looking to do.
When I try the quick selection tool, it's all wonky & quirky now.  I can't select little bits any more! It just basically takes the whole stinkin' page! What did I do?!  Are there defaults?
On watched video number 85 today, I tried to use my stylus and the bamboo pad. (Good grief; that's another story...it moves & I'm not even touching the pad; what's up with that?! Way too confusing, so I gave up!)
    Anyway..this is what I need.
What is easier for me to remove the background?  The kids?  Pretend I didn't say yes to help with this project?
All the video tutorials on how to remove backgrounds is always on a perfect object...not a real life mess of a class.  So... HELP!!!
    Please.
This is WAY over my head; but I'm trying. Really.
On a mac with CC membership.

You may find it easier to select the kids than the background. Instead of copying to new layer, create a mask, then you can add or remove as you like.
In the top tool bar click the icon in the middle to add to selection. Then use your option key to remove.
When you are nearing done, you can then refine the mask. If necessary you can use the other selection tool for straight lines, large areas etc. For tight places you may prefer to use the quick mask tool (lowercase q)
Take your time, you will get it. And like I said, using a mask will let you take a breather. It can help walking away for a bit.

  • When I zoom in + out with dodge tool the cursor changes

So I just installed CS5 on a newly formatted PC.
I didn't used to have this problem before before I completely formatted on HDD do to a virus + reinstalled Windows7, although now its getting on my nerves.
Basically when I zoom in the dodge tool circle will change into a half circle and if I zoom in even more it will change into what seems to be two circles intertwined and if I zoom out around 35% it changes into 4 full circles???
Even when I switch from my photoshop in the taskbar to firefox (without zooming back in) the cursor then changes into 4 normal mouse pointers???? For some reason it will quickly switch back if I press a button on my keyboard. But thats about it, maybe this might be a problem with my video driver maybe?
Im using Inegrated Gfx: Intel GMA X4500

Just updated driver... seems fine for now.

  • How to cancel the background color in the tools content tab?

I accidentally change the color of the background color, and I can't see the background image that I install using the extensions.

    Do you mean this:
    * Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"
If you installed a persona then you can uninstall that persona and revert to the default theme (Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />

    "flying blind."
"You totally lost me there, and I have no clue as to what your last question means."
"I think I now know what you mean."
Evidently language is of difficulty for you.
Perhaps the Oxford dictionary can provide you with your much needed “sensible, meaningful” content.
According to the Oxford dictionary, a dialogue is to "Take part in a conversation or discussion to resolve a problem."  It also states that a dialogue is "A discussion between two or more people or groups, especially one directed toward exploration of a particular subject or resolution of a problem.”
That IS the inherent nature of posts. A conversation is reciprocation.  Questions, followed by more questions.
It is not difficult to understand.
"how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers" is best actualized by simply asking.
Is it a Mac; is it not, etc.
That IS sufficient.  That IS "quicker and better answers[ing]."  That IS what a dialogue IS.   And that IS actually what is "sensible," "meaningful," and "detailed."
The Oxford dictionary can best delineate and elucidate your lack of comprehension in what ACTUALLY “meaning” is.
As well as what is "sensible" AND "detailed."
By the way, am I being repetitive.
Still confused.  Let the experts that do not require much explanation respond with "quicker and better answers" for both "sensible, complete" responses." They are not "lost," "blind," or provide "incomplete" drivel.

  • How do I keep the paint and clone tools from removing the background on the composition?

I am trying to remove handling  wires from a Muppet video.  I double click on the composition (mov file) and  open the layer panel.  I can get the brush, clone and eraser to work  just fine and everything looks great until I play the preview.  I can  see all my strokes on the original movie composition. For example, the white showing in the frame below.
Since I  am very new to AE, I would imagine that I am missing a setting, but it  seems like I have tried all of them and nothing is working.
I am  using CS5, version 10.  Using the normal mode and the RGBA channel on  single frame. I appreciate any help you can provide.  Thanks!

    Hi Rick,
I am trying to remove handler wires that can be seen on Elmo.  This is an
assignment for an online class.  Unfortunately, I asked this question early
last week of the instructor and he has not responded.  We are required to use
the clone, paint or eraser for the exercise.  Thanks for the tip regarding the
CC Simple Wire Removal tool.  That will come in handy in the future.  The
original clip of the Muppets does have a black transparent background. I
changed the composition settings so that I could better see the wires.  Some
of the wires are just over the background and some are over a part of his
clothes.  I can see my strokes when I toggle the transparency grid.  I will
try the clone tool on the alpha channel and see if that works.  If that is not
what I should be doing, please let me know.  Thanks for your help.
I'm not really clear on what you are trying to do. If you're painting on RGBA
and you paint with a white brush you will end up with a white stroke on the
layer. All channels will be white.

If you're painting with a white stroke using Alpha then you will paint white
on the alpha channel so there will be nothing changed on the layer.

If you are painting with a black stroke using Alpha then you will paint a hole
in the layer which will allow the layer below to show through, but if you're
painting on RGB or RGBA then you'll end up with a black stroke on the image.

If you want to paint out the wires then you must either use the clone tool or
make the brush the same color as your background. It looks like you have a
cream colored background so your paint tool must be the same color. If you
have wires over any other color, say over the body of one of the Muppets, then
you must carefully use the clone tool. Your screenshot looks like you're just
painting with a white brush. I'm assuming that your Comp BC color is white
(not usually a good idea) and that there is really no hole in your footage.
You can check that out by clicking on the Toggle Transparency Grid or by
dropping another layer below your footage.

Another option to remove the wires would be to use the CC Simple Wire Removal
tool. It works amazingly well on some shots.

I have several layers for my image: Background, Moon, Tree, Grass and Clouds.  When I try to use the Move tool to move the Moon, the tool jumps to the Tree layer.  The same thing happens with the other layers as well (except the background layer).  How can I keep the move tool from jumpimg to the Tree layer?

    1. Pre-select (highlight) the layer to move in the Layers panel.  or-
    2. [ALT+Right mouse click]  to select the wanted layer in the image window.
    and maybe
    3. Set the PS option to "Auto-select" a layer with cursor hover.  (can be very confusing!)

  • Where is the background and magic eraser tool in photoshop cc?

In photoshop cc, when I choose to use eraser, I do not see the background or magic eraser tool options I see in videos, why? I am trying to learn to crop a face out of one picture and put it in another, and can't get what I need to do it. Is there a manual for photoshop cc?Thanks

Just hold down the mouse botton on the eraser tool for the pop up to show the background eraser tool. or shift+e repeatedly until the tool you want appears. This keyboard shortcut will switch between the multiple eraser tools in that popup menu. Once it is visible you can get back to that tool by using the e key by itself or clicking on it.
That said the background eraser tool is not required, it just makes it a bit easier. The normal eraser tool can erase the background if the background layer is unlocked. (assuming that is the layer you are working on) To unlock that layer just drag the padlock to the trashcan, or double click on that layer where you can name the layer if you choose and click ok.

  • Firefox 27+: Are dev tools running in the background?

Actually, since version 27, seems like Firefox has its dev tools running in background. I'm surfing or debugging with Firefox and it runs as slow as if the dev tools were open. Google Chrome is blazing way faster when its dev tools are closed. Any hints on what to do or is this a proprietary thingy I have to live with? Thx for solutions.

Dev tools don't have an impact on performance, there are likely other things that are causing Firefox to be sluggish. Have you tried [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]]?

Hi. When you were in the recovery drive doing permissions, did you try and run a repair of the boot drive? Did you try single user mode? Try these first and then go back and try to reinstall the operating system. When I say repair boot drive I don't mean permissions. There are both options in disk utilities. When you open disk utilities ,you will see in the left column  two drives plus possibly  a boot partition that look like an external driv. click on the second drive and in first aid use repair disk. If you still can't boot and it will not let you restore, you may have to do a clean install.   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18869?viewlocale=en_US

  • CS4 Burn/Dodge tools losing parts of the circle?

    Hi guys,
I'm sure this is here somewhere, but I cannot find it. (I managed to find discussions in other forums via google, but thought I'd try here since those don't resolve my issue)
    Problem:
Burn / Dodge tools losing 3/4 of the circle, leaving only the top-left portion
The tools still work, but it makes it difficult to know where I'm burning or dodging because I cannot see all of the circle of the tool. I've noticed this only happens once I fill a layer or add any sort of texture. I can open a new file and the tool is there in full (tested from 10px up to 100px) but as soon as I do anything, poof.
I'm using Win XP Home SP3, NVIDIA GeForce 9300 GT with the latest drivers (updated this morning). Every solution I've found thus far has been "update your drivers," but that isn't working in my case. Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

There is that... I have Version 11.0 installed. I am currently a college student, and have access to my college's Photoshop Learning/Tutoring Center (online discussions). Posted the same issue to a professor and they said to reset my preference settings back to default (hold ctrl+alt+shift while starting up PS) and so far it's worked. I'm going to get the update for v. 11.0.1 regardless. Thanks!
