Dodgy Connection

We've only been with BT for 4 days.  Day one was fine, speed & connection as expected.  Friday however there was a Broadband fault in our exchange area.  The service availability pages says they fixed it Friday night.  However since then, although the connection light on the HH3 stays solid, we generally have to submit requests for web pages 2 or 3 times before they appear.  Or even just timeout although the connection is still there.
The speedtest at http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ gives
Download speedachieved during the test was - 6.94 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.6 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
 Additional Information:
 Your DSL Connection Rate :8.13 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7.15 Mbps
The normal speedtest & connection problems pages 'can't find my details' so don't help.
This is not internal, no extensions active, microfilters in place nothing changed since before the problems started on Friday.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I've plugged the HH into the test socket, phone is disconnected.  The quiet line test is quiet.
Even getting the speedtest page up took 3 attempts.
I could be wrong, but I don't think it is coincidence that this is happening just after the local fault.  I am aware of the 3/10 days when the line is automatically callibrated and don't expect much action from BT although I`ve emailed them. This is really unuseable at present.

  • How i fixed my Airport ** dodgy connection**Airdisks**

Since the upgrade to leopard i was plagued with connection issues : dropping, slow, no reconnect after sleep and plenty more.
Also my airdisks would not connect after sleep and a restart was the only way to sort it.
In the end i took the AEBS firmware back to 7.1 by selecting 'Base Station>Upload firmware' in the airport utility.
With this done i also ran the patch for VMware Fusion
    http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/download/811177-4082/vmnet_fix .zip
EVERYTHING IS NOW PERFECT!!!! Weeks of frustration is at an end!!! Whoo Hoo!

If you lose after sleep, that often means that the default network it is trying to connect to is not setup in the network preferences.
    If you go to:
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Network -> change Network Status to Airport, and By default Join Preferred networks, and delete all the networks, and only add the network with the correct username and password for your network, usually that will fix the network so that it only goes to that network after it wakes from sleep. Sometimes if the network settings become corrupted, it is best to clear the preferred networks, and start fresh.

  • Dodgy connection? + tips to beat wireless?

    Hello,
I have BT Infinty 2 and keep getting kicked out of games on COD or Halo 3. Is this due to the fact that im wireless and my hub is downstairs in the kitchen? Any advice on how to get a more stable connection? ie: network adapters, wireless receivers, wifi repeaters etc Which is best? Money no option haha
    Thanks in advance homiessss

    Thanks for the reply.
Im not sure how i could run ethernet because im upstairs and the hub is downstairs? Our main phone line is in the hallway right next to the kitchen so thats why the hub has to stay downstairs im guessing? Like is it possible to get a new phone socket/line put in my room so i could have it up there? If not then look like the powerline adaptros are the best bet. Would 500Mbps cover my BT Infinty 2 speeds though?
    Thanks.
You could run an ethernet cable fom where the Openreach modem is, along the skirting boards, up the stairs to to where you want the homehub to be sited or depending how your house is constructed you could run it out through the wall via an airbrick, up the ouside of the house and back in via an airbrick, or use powerlines which will be much easier.
The hub can be connected by the powerlines to the modem if you are wanting to move the hub.

  • Zen micro - sound quality/dodgy connect

I'm on my second Zen micro since xmas (first one didn't work the first time I used it) and having only had it for month, I'm now having problems with the headphone connection. The sound is crackly, and often the only comes through one earpiece. When you touch the connection point, it affects the sound. It's NOT a problem with the headphones, as i've tried different pairs - so it must be the socket. My friend who also got a new one at xmas, is having exactly the same probs (she's on her 2nd one too!).
Is anyone having similar problems, and has anyone got any solutions? Please?!!! I'm really don't want to have to exchange it again...
    thanks

Yeah this happened to me too. I'm on my third and the fourth will be on it's way. I know Creative has had problems with headphone jack connections on other players before. I guess they didn't learn their lesson. :smileyindifferent: Sucks for us

  • MacBook Pro and Airport connection problem

My MacBook Pro has a volatile connection to my Airport Express base station.
I have a 2-month old 15.4" MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo), all software updates are installed, etc. I connect to the internet through an Airport base station. For the past few days my MBP has had a dodgy connection, slowing down at seeming random and then occasionally disconnecting from the base station entirely, although the Airport icon on the MBP is always on. While downloading a file I noticed that the speed of the connection was incrementally slowing until it stopped, and it was only after a couple of retries and then connecting to the base station again (by finding it amongst the other networks on the pull-down menu that you get when you click on the Airport icon) that my connection resumed at its previous speed.
My 12" PowerPC iBook connects to the internet over this Airport base station at full speed, no problems.
I've tried resetting the PRAM on my MBP without change.
One possibly noteworthy change is that this past week I updated my Parallels software to 3.0, which may have an effect based on some of the other threads I've read.
    What now?!

After trying all of the above the suggestions, the problem returned as before. However, after digging some more I discovered that the issue appears to lie with the 10.4.10 version of the Mac OS; when I checked the software log under the system profiler I noticed that I had installed that update at about the time my Airport problems began. Apple then quietly released a v 1.1 combo update to 10.4.10 on July 2nd, which once installed appears to have resolved the problem. You can find the download at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
What's curious is that originally Apple listed that the v 1.1 combo update resolved some issues with RAW image data, and some sound problems, which don't seem to have anything to do with Airport.

  • Re: Satellite C660-1LD Blue screen whilst trying to connect to the internet

I've been having a lot of trouble with trying to get my laptop to connect to the internet, when I was attempting to troubleshoot it, the blue screen appeared and it shut down, I didn't have enough time to read all of the information so I'm not really sure why it appeared. The laptop restarted and still couldn't connect to our wireless network, I tried numerous system restores which couldn't complete even though I tried it after I deactivated my AVG protection.
Eventually it connected and I was able to go on the internet for a short period of time with a very temperamental connection, it then disconnected again after about 15 minutes, I struggled to get it to connect again but when I eventually did the connection seemed fine and didn't drop.
I shut it down and when I turned it back on I had the same problem again, it wouldn't connect, the troubleshooter couldn't fix the problem, although a few times it identified the problem as a "problem with the wireless adapter". I tried everything I could think of, more system restores, re-installing the "network adapters" under the device manager, changing the power options to maximum for the wireless adapter and checking the the computer doesn't turn it off the save power, removing all wireless networks and then trying to reconnect to them. After about 2 hours I managed to get it to connect again after rebooting it in safe mode and the connection is fine now.
However I'm worried that I'm going to have this issue every time I turn my laptop on to go on the internet. I'm also very concerned about the "blue screen" that came up, it hasn't happened again and that was the first time I've ever seen one and I've been told by friends that its pretty severe and is known as the "blue screen of death". I don't know if this is anything to worry about or whether it was just a one off? Is it possible that my laptop could have some sort of virus or bug? Or a possible hardware problem? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I'm fairly certain that this is a problem with my laptop and not the wireless network as I can access the internet on my iPhone and the internet is working perfectly on all of my housemate's laptops.
    Thank you

No its the original OS that I bought it with, its only the wireless connection that it seems to struggle with, it seems to be working fine since I had the issue with the blue screen, and when I had that issue I tried it with other wireless networks and it still wouldn't connect to any of them.
Since then a few times its struggled to connect at first but has in the end, I'm concerned that something inside the laptop could have gone wrong being the reason for the blue screen and the dodgy connection to the internet as I've never had any hint of a problem with it before. My laptop is just over a year old and I do use it a lot and regularly take it out and about when I go to University and travel to and from my hometown, so could it be its just wearing out? As I once got told laptops don't have a particularly long life if you are always moving them and travelling with them.
    Thanks!

  • Since installing Airport Express wireless connection to other devices keeps being dropped

Our home network consists of my MacBook Pro 15", my wife's quite old Compaq notebook, an Apple TV, and recently, an Airport Express.
The router is one that was provided by our ISP, Alice/O2 in Germany. I think it is made by Siemens but its model name is Alice IAD 4421 WLAN (in case anyone in Germany is reading this.)
My MacBook connects to the WiFi broadcast perfectly every time, as did my wife's Windows laptop until recently. Between our two machines there was a total of one single occasion where the signal dropped, and a restart of the router got it back up and runnning.
The Apple TV was set up without any problems at all, the wireless connection dropped out once over the space of 6 weeks.
About 5 days ago, I bought and installed an Airport Express which has so far served the sole function of providing Airplay to 2.0 speakers in the kitchen, so I just selected 'join network' when setting it up in Airport Utility.
Since it was installed, video playing over Airplay to the Apple TV keeps stopping, with the message 'Apple TV is not connected to the internet', the AE itself suffers from dropouts in audio, (the LED has always stayed solid green) and my wifes notebook can only join the network after she has restarted it.
A restart of the router helps for about an hour, but the problems keep recurring.
Does anyone have any idea of any changes I can make to the AE settings, as it seems to be the cause of the dodgy connections to the other devices?

Hello mathias1711. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) settings for streaming iTunes ...
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
To set up AirTunes on the AX, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
o Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
    Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Dodgy sound on iBook

    Hi,
I have an iBook, and I have just noticed that when I'm playing music and DVD's through headphones the sound is really bad...echoey, mettalic and sometimes vocal is almost inaudible over the background music (on a dvd). I have used several different sets of headphones but it doesnt change it.
Sound through the internal speakers is fine however.
now, this may well be an issue with a dodgy connection in the audio jack, but just in case its a software issue (which, knowing these things it may well be) I thought I would post here before going elsewhere for repairs.
    Thanks

I have the opposite problem. The internal speaker started to make a staticy chattering sound after using the new Superdrive to do backups. All works fine if I plug in headphones. We have had the beloved 12" iBook G4 open several times as we continue to upgrade it, so it may well be a wire that got roughed up. We've upgraded to the superdrive and are about to put in a new hard drive and more ram so the wire approach to troubleshooting the problem gives us a clue what to look for.
    Thanks!

  • Headphone Jack sticking and screen turning on

I bought a sim free palm pre (non plus!) a month or so ago from handtec UK and now the sound intermittently doesnt work. its like the headphone jack is sticking which ive seen is common but when there is no sound the screen randomly turns on like i pressed the unlock button. So i think its a dodgy connection on the slider because when i blow in the slider/headphone jack it fixes it for a bit then it comes back, which is annoying because it drains my battery quicker.
    Any ideas?
P.S i spoke to someone on palm live chat and they said to run webos doctor, (i dont think its software tho) but i thought id try it anyway so when i entered the serial number it said its invalid!!!!! Then i discovered theres another sticker underneath the sticker with the imei and serial numbers on the box which says its a movistar phone. When i tried this serial number to download webos doctor it said for movistar and i dont want to use this incase it locks the phone to that network :/
So im stuck as to whether to try and get the phone fixed or see if theres an easy fix but i just dont know what to do

I think you are correct, I would think it is the headphone jack connector. You can try some compressed air in a can in the jack hole, or maybe a little contact cleaner that has some very light lubricant in it to try and free up the micro switch in the connector. The exercise the switch by quickly inserting and removing the headphone jacks plug. I you do not have any luck wit this process you would be forced to get a repair or replacement.

  • Yet again, noisy phone line, and broadband slowed ...

We've had this problem a few times now, and are looking for tips on how to get it sorted once and for all. I am convinced that it is caused by a dodgy connection somewhere external to our house, and it seems to happen more frequently in wet weather. We've done all the troubleshooting as recommended by BT, and are happy that it is not our side of the master socket. I have booked an engineer (June 4th - earliest available appointment), but last time I did that, by the time the appointment came around, the fault had rectified itself again (the weather had improved, so presumably things had dried out).
    Any suggestions gratefully accepted!

If you are happy everything is ok at the test socket there is nothing else you can do other than wait for the engineers visit

  • Using Iphone 4S as an Ipod in car

In my car I have a USB connector that I use to connect to my Iphone 4S.  This both charges the phone which is great but more importantly it allows me to use the cars In Car Entertainment system to go through my music.  I also connect the phone to the car using Bluetooth for the inbuilt Hands Free.  The problem is, after about 2 minutes, when i'm playing music through the USB the sound goes as I believe that the phone is switching off the USB output in favour of the Bluetooth.
I can, if I want, play the music through Bluetooth which works but doesn't give me as much flexibility with regards picking my music (just forward and back tracks).
Any idea if there is a setting which allows me to keep the USB as a selected output until such time as the phone rings in which case i'd want it to automatically switch back to the bluetooth.
I would point out that when I first bought the car in September 2011 this issue wasn't present but an update on the phone probably changed something.  I didn't notice at first so can't tell which update it might have been.

I've unplugged the phone an then tried replugging it in again as at first I thought it was a dodgy connection with the lead (i've tried 2 with the same result) so i'm not sure that's the solution.  It may be that the car is constantly checking the connection I guess which re-establishes the bluetooth as the priority but it doesn't explain why it worked at one time and now doesn't.  One thing I should say is that i've also tried this with my older Iphone 4 and have the same result.  Thanks for the reply though.  Anyone else got any ideas?

  • Broadband drops every few hours causing router to ...

For the last 8 days my router has been rebooting between four and 6 times a day.  There is no pattern, happens during day and at night when not in use. I have spent many hours with level 1 and level 2 re-expalining the issue each time I call, have plugged router into test socket, changed filter and the hiub is new all no difference. Line test shows nothing. Level 2 refused to do anything else until engineer visits, now booked for a few days time but am confident no internal issues so not sure what's next.
The odd thing is that I had the same problem 5 months ago and a BT engineer did something remotely at the exchange which cured the problem until last week.  Current connection details are:
    06:55:55, 25 Apr.
( 110.420000) DSL noise margin: 6.00 dB upstream, 3.00 dB downstream
    06:55:54, 25 Apr.
( 109.390000) DSL line rate: 1135 Kbps upstream, 22584 Kbps downstream
    Am on a Homehub4.
Has anyone had a similar issue and what did BT do to resolve.  If only I knew what the engineer did last time I would ask BT to do the same again but they say there is no record of what was done to resolve the issue. Any suggestions or tips of how to get BT to leapfrog some steps and go straight to invertigating the exchange and line configuration?
I would really appreciate some help.

Engineer is ok as long as he finds something otherwise its 129 quid for nothing.
We had an engineer out for 5 hours on our slow and disconnecting broadband, he tried all sorts and in end limited it to 0.7 meg which was useless.
Another engineer came and found dodgy connection down road, that fixed it until another engineer fiddles in cabinet on with lines and its back to rubbish again.

  • AppleTV struggles to find resolution at start up

    Hi Folks,
I love my AppleTV but it has annoyed me for the last time. When ever I turn the thing on, it blinks and blinks and acts like it is struggling to set the resolution. Sometimes it blinks around forever, never actually getting to a usable state. Usually it blinks around for 2-5 minutes then comes on normally.
I can't really describe what it is doing... because I am not that familiar with how the AppleTV and HD tv work. From my understanding of computers, it looks like a computer trying to set a resolution on a monitor that the monitor doesn't like. More specifically, it looks like it is trying to set a refresh rate that is incompatible. You don't see this much anymore with flat panel computer monitor, but you used to see it on old Glass Tubes.
My PlayStation 3 has no problems what so ever using the TV at 1080p @ 60hz, the AppleTV only has options for 1080i @ 50hz. I don't know the difference between the i and p in the 1080 setting.
I am using the Belkin HDMI cable that the Apple Store sold me with the AppleTV unit. I have tried switching the HDMI ports on the TV, between the PS3 and the AppleTV. Regardless of the port, the PS3 works fine, the AppleTV blinks. I have also tries using the PS3 HDMI cable on the AppleTV and that makes no difference either.
I am left to speculate that it is some setting on the AppleTV that the TV itself doesn't like. Perhaps the i in 1080i vs 1080p, or maybe the 50 vs 60 hz. Not sure.
I filmed the blinking, and in my little film you can see that the PS3 is working just fine (if you can read the settings on the PS3 it says 1080p) and when I switch to the AppleTV it takes almost 5 minutes of blinking before the AppleTV corrects itself and comes "on."
Here is the URL to my video:
    http://gallery.me.com/lintila#100075

HDMI is far from perfect with all devices.
Yes, most tend to work, but some struggle or don't.
AppleTV certainly doesn't like being used through HDMI splitters/AV amps/switches - some work perfectly, other fail completely.
HDMI leads should just work on the face of it, but all leads can have dodgy connections and some may be poor quality but neitehr Sony or Belkin should be poor quality.
My understanding that HDMI devices negotiate connections between themselves, a bit like a computer establishing a link with another network device. The negotiation process involves the display telling the video device about available display modes etc, and the two thrash out what can and can't be displayed and reach the best compromise. Occasionally the process fails.
AppleTV can certainly output 1080p display, but it is set dependent - some of mine can reach 1080i, some 1080p.
It sounds as though the negotiation is giving Appletv the whole set o foptions the PS3 is finding - some TVs have firmware niggles that can cause problems. It's always hard to know in these cases if it's the TV or AppleTV at fault.
Can you test on a friend's TV set?
To be honest, for movies AppleTV can only playback 720p video anyway, which it upscales to 1080i or p if display is set to that. You might not notice much difference bewteen 720p option and 1080i/p anyway.
The 50Hz/60Hz might theoretically make a difference but in practice I don't see much difference whichever I choose.
If the AppleTV is always on and the problem happens when switching inputs back to AppleTV, i do see that from time to time, and suspect that that input is re-negotiating communication when re-selected.

  • How to setup TV Resolution

HI, I need help setting up my new appleTV,
I follow all the installation instruction to the letter, but when I check in the apple TV menu under About it shows that I got only 480P connection with the TV.
The TV is able the show 1080P full resolution, do I need to change some settings on my apple TV? or is it normal?
When I look at the photos from my iMac  true AppleTV the resolution is not as clear as in iPhoto.
    Please Help, Thanks Marc

AppleTV 2 only officially outputs 720p - does your TV explicitly specify it can handle that?  Most should be able to and scale to internally to the panel resolution as needed.
I've seen a few people say they get 480p, and I think their sets may not have supported 720p and so it falls back to 480p.
Just to check - you are using an AppleTV 2 (black).  (The older one allowed configuration of resolution for output).
Also go to Settings and check for a software update as some HDMI glitches will have been addressed in later updates (sometimes they get introduced to, but when things aren't working right best to try the latest software).
If you have another HDMI cable or input on TV try that too - HDMI negotiation is a black art performed by the devices at either end, and dodgy connections/cables can affect things in ways that would not be obvious to us!
