Dodgy Graphics

Hi,
I'm having a problem with games on my new PC. I have the Gf4 Ti4200 128mb, Windows 98SE and all the latest drivers and DirectX.  I benchmarked the card and got 6215 at 75Hz refresh rate. In a game like UT2003, if i just move the mouse left to right, the graphics on the screen drag. However i'm supposed to described it basically it doesn't move smoothly. I've tried lots to try and solve this problem such as changing settings, PSU, monitor refresh rates but i can't sort out the problem.
Is there anything else i might need to change? My specs are below if you need them:
AthlonXP 2000+
256mb DDR
60GB Maxtor
K7 Mainboard
SonicXplosion
400W PSU
This is a frustrating problem, please help if you can.

Hmmmm... Nothing really running in the background. I've already tried all the different detonators and my settings aren't aggresive. Do you think its worth getting more RAM? I would have thought it would be enough to run most things. Could it be my monitor or my monitor driver or something? I was kinda hoping i could solve this without spending more money.
Thanks, Psymon  8)

  • Dodgy Viewsonic VP171b?

This has me just a little but flumoxed - hence posting from a very reliable XP Pro system.
One of my Viewsonic VP171b's on a dual set up in XP Pro started to blink:
    - momentary brightening followed by a blackout with green power light still showing as 'on'
    I assumed a dodgy ATI/MSI X1600 video card.
But the same thing started to happen on a Mac Pro.
    Interim conclusion #2
Two dodgy graphics cards or a dodgy monitor?
The Viwesonic should still be in its warranty period so I am noit too fussed on that but! Should I wait a while before investing in an Apple 30" cinema display?
    What say you?
Both the ATI/MSI X1600 thingy and VP171b should still be in a warranty state but 'd love to have a whacking huge display device and am a bit so-so about present state of 30" units

    Closure:
    - tried DSUB and DVI cables = no difference
    - monitor finally seems to have gone belly up
    - contacted supplier to invoke warranty

  • Itunes scrollbar corrupt graphics issue

weird problem with itunes - the background on the scrollbars becomes black after an infrequent period of time - normally less than ~ 3 hours. pics:
    http://i44.tinypic.com/1xxjki.png
    http://i43.tinypic.com/2mhj0jc.png
quitting and restarting itunes fixes it. i've tried:
    trashing itunes related plists
    un-installing any plugins
    cleaning out all caches
    (restarting obv)
    reinstalling itunes
    reinstalling quicktime
    applying latest combo updater
all to no joy. anyone else seen this bizarre issue?
    cheers

No dodgy graphics drivers I know of. You might post in the appropriate MacBook forum to see if others have had similar experience:

However, I'd be taking to the genius.

  • Graphics crashes on Satellite M40-154

I have a problem with my Toshiba M40-154. It has Pentium 1.73Ghz with X600 graphics card. The notebook was marketed as an entertainment machine, but my graphics driver crashes. Every time I am playing any game involving slightest graphics, like unreal tournament 2003 or need for speed most wanted. I have updated all the drivers, bios etc from the website and the problem still persists.
I send it to Toshiba, and they returned it back to me saying they could not find any problem with the machine. The problem is the graphic card crashes at its own will even watching DVDs at times.
Anyone having the same problem and solved it? Can please give me the solution?
Please don't give me solutions like updating my drivers from the Toshiba support website, as I spend half my day on that website, updating my computer, where as I should be working and making better use or my time.
I am sorry to have written so much, but you can understand how much frustrated you will be when you have a problem.

    Hi there,
When you say crash, do you mean to system spontaneously reboots?
I used to have this problem ALL the time when playing games, like you I thought it was because I had dodgy graphics card drivers so I tried a load of different ones - from official to modded ones.
I then installed a CPU temperature monitor and it was reading 70c just at idle!! So then obviously, I go to run a game like Splinter Cell or HL2 - anything CPU power demanding and hey presto, the temp exceeds 100C and proceeds to just turn itself off.
Also like you, I sent it to service under warranty telling them that my notebook is way too hot, sort it out. They phone me back saying 'We can't find any faults'. This made me quite mad so I tell them to look again and I insisted again and again that it was 70 at idle, and in excess of 100 when I play games.
Then what do you know, a day later I get told they're waiting for a new cooling module to come in so they can fit it. 2 days later I get it back and the problem is gone!
    2 things:
    1) Don't let them tell you there is no problem, there obviously is.
    2) If you are experiencing something along the lines of what I just said, send it back to service and make sure you mention that it crashes when you play games.
    Good luck,
    Antony

  • MacBook video out not working

    Hi there
I bought the mini-dvi to s-video/composite output to connect my MacBook up to a TV while away from home (to watch TV and movies) but it doesn't work. First I suspected the old TV, but works OK with the Wii connected. Then I thought it was the cable, but I tried a new cable and the sound works fine, so that's not it. Then I suspected the adapter, but when I got home I connected it to my wife's MacBook and it worked fine.
So, looks like I have dodgy graphics card hardware?
The MacBook detects that the adapter is connected, so some of the pins are working OK. I just can't get a signal from my MacBook to the TV and the auto detect does not work.
Anyone got any ideas? The computer is no longer under warranty and I don't have time to take it to the dealer (it takes them three weeks to turn around a fault!) so I'm guessing that I'll have to open up the device myself and check for some bad connections?
    Any advice is appreciated!
    Regards... Jonny.

Video out under 10.5.2 works fine for me and for a colleague of mine with a more recent MacBook Pro. I'd wager it's a problem with your Leopard install, not a universal one.
Also, FYI, Apple doesn't read these forums; they're just for user-to-user help. If you want to leave MacBook Pro feedback for Apple, do so here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html
But again, I do not believe yours is a universal issue. We'll be happy to help troubleshoot though. What do you mean the image is "unstable"? Could you take a digital photograph of the external monitor's screen and upload it somewhere?

  • Smt data from diagnostics

    Hello,
Can anyone interpret the following info from the diagnostics run on my 20G ipod? The 'smt data' returned with the following:
    retracts 84
    reallocs 227
    pending 541
This was immediately after I reformatted the ipod. The HDD R/W passes and all other tests pass except the HDD scan is still running after an hour and 45 minutes.
Is this thing dead? I assume the smt data refers to bad sectors on my hard drive.
Why would so many folks with 4th generation ipods be having the same problem around the same time?
thanks for any help interpreting the smt data.
    Stacey Street
    4gen 20G   Windows XP Pro

    Hi Stacey,
Although I can't help with the SMT data, I CAN recommend an alternative to iTunes. If you've ever used Winamp, you'll know how useful a media player it is. I find the media library to be much better than iTunes. And, since it's basically open-source (albeit a Premium version exists), there are loads of free plug-ins available. And one of those is an iPod plug-in.
I stopped using Winamp a while ago as it was playing havoc with my dodgy graphics card. However, in that time, I found mlipod to be an invaluable tool in using my iPod. It's available from:
    www.mlipod.com
You'll need Winamp 5 or above to use it, but it's fully-featured and copying music to (and from!) the iPod is quick and easy. Also, this feature is now completely integrated into Winamp 5.2 and above.
Also, you might need the M4P plug-in for Winamp if you use iTunes downloaded music - it's basic, but allows playback of protected files. Winamp can play M4A (unprotected files of the same family) files by default, but not M4P. I'm sorry, but I can't find the website. The link from Will Fisher's page doesn't work, and the iPod page on Wikipedia from which I found it has been restyled and the link removed. I do have the original installation file, so if you would like to try this method, please e-mail me:
    [email protected]
    Hope this helps,

  • Lightroom 5 crashes my Windows 8 machine

    Hi,
I have installed Lightroom 5 Beta on my new Windows 8 PC a few weeks ago and have a serious problem with it - ocassionally (From a few minutes to an hour), while I am working on Lightroom, I get a blue screen saying something about a problem with "Memory Management", and the PC reboots.
I was hoping this would go away with the released version, but I installed it yesterday and the problem persists.
Any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ilan

You need to run it multiple times and leave it running for several hours to get a definitive indication of whether or not RAM is the problem. It won't neccessarily let you know if there's a problem with the RAM modules, or with the sockets on the motherboard, but at least you'll be able to narrow things down and can then use this information to make a warranty claim if neccessary. There should be some instructions on the Memtest website. If it comes back with no errors then it's time to start looking for other culprits, such as dodgy graphics card drivers or other hardware issues (I've had a motherboard go bad on me in the past). Good luck anyway and hope you get this resolved quickly. I know from experience how frustrating and annoying BSODs can be.
One other thing, if I were you I'd not do any work in LR until you get to the bottom of this. If you do then you could risk corrupting a file, or perhaps even the catalogue if the PC happens to crash right in the middle of writing something to a file. When I had my issues last year I did find that LR is remarkably robust and it recovered from system crashes with no issue (sometimes took a few seconds longer to launch whilst it caught up), but I stopped doing anything to any photo files right away and made sure I had plenty of backups for the catalogue in case some damage had been caused that wasn't immediately apparent (I hasten to add that I always keep multiple catalogue backups anyway as I'm paranoid about these things, and of course seperate backups of the photos themselves); didn't lose any data whatsoever. Might be overkill, but IMHO it's better safe than sorry.

  • Why can I (sometimes) not boot until running AHT?

Apologies for the strangely worded question - I'm very confused by this issue.
I have a 15-inch early 2011 MBP. I've added a Vertex 4 SSD as the primary boot drive, keeping the stock HD as a second drive, and upgraded the ram to 2x4gb. Everything else is standard.
Recently I started having problems with OSX freezing and shutting down, sometimes not booting back up successfully - I put it down to some dodgy graphics drivers I'd installed (was running very hot and I suspect overheating) so I backed up my user files and did a full reinstall. It seemed to be OK since then.
Today I had problems again - I think after the battery ran out while I was using it (I don't know if this is related). It shut down and I'd get a grey screen indefinitely when I rebooted, and I just couldn't get back into OSX. These are the things I tried, roughly in the order I tried them:
Performing a safe boot - I'd get the Apple logo and slider, which would progress roughly two thirds of the way in, then I'd get a blue screen
Performing a verbose safe boot - unresponsive grey screen
Booting from local recovery disk - unresponsive grey screen
Resetting NVRAM - made no difference
Resetting SMC - made no difference
Booting to single user mode and running fsck until it comes back clean (no 'volume was modified' message) and restarting - no difference
Trying to isolate any hardware problems - swapping out RAM, disconnecting secondary drive etc - no luck
Finally - running network AHT (opt+D on startup) This didn't find any problems, but seemed to solve whatever problem I was having. I restarted after this and OSX came back up as if nothing had been happening.
So my questions are these - I'd appreciate any insight even if they're not complete answers, because I can't figure out what's going on.
What did AHT do that fixed my problem?
Does that point to a hardware issue, even though the test came back OK?
What can I do to prevent it happening again?
    Thanks!

    Thanks,
Does this excerpt from the system log help? It seems to represent a (failed)boot attempt.
There's a couple of things at the bottom that look a bit suspicious, but I don't know how to interpret them - ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key B0PS and activation bcstop timer fired!

  • Help - my PhD is at stake!!!

I am trying to run two monitors of a G4 Mac with OS 9.2.1 I have installed a special graphics card called a Radius Thunder Power 30/1600. A monitor will work seperately on both graphics cards, but when I plug in both and turn on it seems to crash. When I first tried it, it worked briefly then crashed. It can't be dodgy graphics cards because they both work seperately. Somehow the computer isn't allowing me to run two monitors at the same time. Can anyone help????
    G4   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi, Hairlosscream -
Try increasing the Preferred memory allocation for the Monitors control panel. Doubling or tripling the original Preferred amount should be sufficient.
Article #18278 - Assigning More Memory to an Application
Also, resetting PRAM may help. To do that - restart or boot, immediately press and hold down the Command-Option-P-R keys, keep them held down until you've heard three additional sets of startup chimes. Then release those keys and let startup resume.

  • Securing data before repair....

Need to take my MBP to the Apple Store tomorrow to have it looked at because of a dodgy graphics card.... it is more that likely that I'll need to leave it with them.
I guess that I can't short of backing-up and wiping the data BUT how can I secure the information on it? There's nothing on there that shouldn't be but I don't want people having access to my photo's, letters etc even for a quick nosey browse.
    Cheers
    HVXuser....

Create a new encrypted disc image using Disk Utility. Move all your data into the disc image and then remove the originals from the drive. Use Secure Erase Free Space (one pass) to assure that none of the deleted data can be recovered from the drive. After your repairs you can transfer the data from the disc image back to where they originally were stored on the drive.

  • Help deciphering Crash Log - quite long, sorry.

Best I can recall, this has been happening since I got the current Dual 2.5 GHz PPC G5 w/3 GB RAM back in March that I'm running(w/Black Magic Decklink Extreme card) Over that period, it's gotten better, and worse and now, after 6.0.1, much worse.
What I'm running: OSX 10.3.9, ATI Radeon 9600XT, 6 - 512 MB sticks of RAM all DDR SDRAM PC3200U-30330 from the same vendor/manufact. and Apple Hardware Tested o.k. FCStudio 6.0.1, latest DeckLink Driver, QT 7.1.3
Full freeze & lock up in FCP now every couple hrs or so.
Here's what happens: could be in canvas, or viewer, or playing a seq. in time line and everything freezes. No cursor movement, no clock ticking in menu bar, no nothing. No force quit, no spinning beach ball, no nothing, just frozen screen on both monitors,(well, frozen everything actually) and picture dissapears from video display, (component out from Deck Link). Only option is hard re start.
Never happens doing the same thing, happens in any/every project.
Here's what I've done: ran Hardware test, combo updater, reinstalled FCP, deleted caches, repaired permissions, Disc Warrior, isolated and tested each of my media drives, tried removing 2 RAM sticks at a time till I'd tested/isolated all 6, and all to no avail.
I've looked at all sorts of 'How-to's' regarding how to figure out crashes from crash logs, but nothing that I've been able to see is any help. Here's a copy & paste of most recent info from Library/CrashLog/FinalCut Pro:

your crash log suggests that an FxPlug caused a memory access error
this might mean you are using a buggy FxPlug ...
if you have any third party FxPlug's that you are using that you think may be the cause then try disabling them
... or given the timeframe for the start of th problem, maybe its more likely you have a dodgy graphics card or dodgy Decklink card? try pulling out the Decklink card and see if you still get the problem . if its still there, try swapping out the graphics card with another if you have a second card/machine available

  • 3 displays from a G5 (is installing 2 graphics cards an option?)

    Hi there,
I'm trying to set up 3 displays from my G5 with an ATI Radeon 9600 XT. Ideally two are to be mirrored and one independant. I have two 23" Cinema Displays and a cheap Philips 190CW on which I'm trying to mirror one of the Apples. I bought a 1 x 4 DVI splitter (on ebay from Taiwan) which doesn't seem to work.
My regular 2 monitor set-up which has worked perfectly is to run one Cinema Display from the ADC output on the graphics card via an ADC to DVI converter and the other from the DVI on the card. So I thought I could simply run the DVI output into this splitter and run the extra monitor from one of the outs as well as the second Cinema Display giving me the mirroring on two. But all I get is the ADC connected Cinema Display and one or the other of the DVI connected monitors - not a split.
The splitter is supposed to support 4 monitors at 1920 x 1200 but when I connect all three to the splitter it only gives me one!
    I have three questions:
    1) Is it just a a dodgy Splitter?
    2) If so can anyone recomend one that will work or a way to do what I want?
    3) Is it possible to install a second graphics card such as another ATI Radeon 9600 XT and run 3 displays from them?
I'd very much appreciate any suggestions.
    Cheers GR

    Thanks very much.
That does answer my question but doesn't solve my problem...
It seems to be working on all three monitors in that configuration but it doesn't really do what I need in terms of the physical placement of the Apple Displays - I need them to stay together unmirrored and the Philips monitor a few metres away mirroring one of the Apples. (I'd love to get another 23" Apple but it's 5 x the $$$). How slow in everyday terms would it be with an extra graphics card? I'm doing this for a music recording set-up.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Garbled Graphics From Startup

    Hi,
When I try to boot my intel imac i get garbled graphics, right from the instant the screen lights up. Its as if the normal screen is overlaid with a bitmapped blue haze, it gets past the grey apple (still with haze) but will get no further seaming to freeze on an all blue screen, on which the mouse is still visible and working. Once when i hit the power button to restart, it inadvertently slept, and upon wake-up i could make out the login screen but with heavy graphic distortion. The graphics would not respond though. I've zapped the pram and tried to boot from the osx cd. Is there anything else to check before i send it for repair?
    Thanks, Mike

I took it into my local genius bar and the guy there zapped the pram several times in succession, on each repeat the screen got a little better until, voila, back to normal! I suspect some dodgy code got stuck in a buffer somewhere and it needed a good few zaps to sort it. Problem Solved

  • Graphic Card Upgrade for HP-Pavilion dv6t-7000

Hello. I have the HP Pavlilion dv6t-7000 with the NVIDIA GT650M 1GB grpahics card. Now because of my work, i need to extends my graphic card memory. So I want to ask if my laptop is possible to upgrade to GT650M 2GB card.
My product number is A5F74AV. And my wannary is end on 8/24/2013.
And this laptop is a gift of my aunt from USA, and I'm living in Viet Nam now. So if yes, can HP Vietnam do the upgrade for me? My aunt's family is very busy so I can't resend my laptop and ask them to return to you.
    Thank you very much!

    Hi:
The only way to upgrade the video card in your notebook is to replace the entire motherboard which would cost as much as buying a new notebook with better graphics.
If you had HP do the upgrade, it would probably cost more than buying 2 notebooks with better graphics than yours.
