Dodgy SLI Switch Card

Hello All...
The SLI swich card on the MSI K8N SLI Platinum is very poor, it’s the 2nd time ive had issues with it. Last year the board would not operate in SLI, I returned it to my local outlet and got a replacment; I then had no further problems.
Ive just bought a x1900xt but when I switched the card back to the NON-SLI position, low and behold my machine will not boot. The only way I can get this to work is if I leave it in the SLI position @ x 8 PCI, has anyone had a simler issues or have any ideas how to fix the board.
As I understand it running at only x8 PCI bandwidth should not affect performance, I benchmarked the card the last night and everything seemed normal, could someone please confirm this…
Thanks in advance

most of the sli process is driver based not game based.
Did either of you try various drivers using the correct install and uninstall procedures?
IE DL driver cleaner.
Remove the old nvid drivers.
Reboot safe mode
Run something like cc cleaner to clean out the old nvid driver registry.
Delete the old nvid driver folders.
Reboot safe
Install new drivers
Reboot into windows propper.
set up monitor(s)
Set up nvid control panel and graphics card.
Set it for a perticular game or program.
For me the original 81.98 drivers on my 7800 gt's were total crap completely unstable.
I moved up to 82.12 drivers, which were vastly more stable.
Also know while your game may not show an increase in FPS because of source code issues, you can run the game with more options at top speed.

  • A broken Sli switch card and my story...

Hello evey1, first post here, that's my story:
got my new PC in august, firstly i was really happy...then some probs occured like lockups in games , etc, all solved at a point....when i decided to use the sli feature and add another MSI 6600GT...my mobo is MSI K8N SLI PLATINUM....so i turned the sli switch card 180 degrees put it into position but what happened? the little hook keeping the turnable liitle card just got out of his position, thus, installing the second 6600GT but after a while it hoped out of its position like something that was holding it in position had broken something...so i gave up{ games werent that good after all} sold the second VGA and gave it for service at a shop. There the guy confirmed that something had broken, and sticked the hook into position with , i could say a mod...the prob is that from that time i formated XP for various reasons {SP1=>SP2} and here I am......
    Now this is my problem: at random occasions{and i mean really random, like once or twice a week} when I open the pc cpu usage is above 50%, but I think this doesnt happens in safe mode...task manager didn't help so I downloaded procexp{a task manager replacement} which found the root of the prob........hardware interrupts....that's it....so now what? is my warranty viotaled bceause of the mod? can i fix it? and generraly, IF i buy a new mobo will the prob be solved or its not the mobo's prob? memtest gave me no errros and it hit 400%..... VGA temp never exceeds 55 degrees celsius but i must say some lines appear when i open the pc.....I think though its because of the monitor{a really old CRT 17''}....anyway ive tried every drivers i could find{creative/nforce4/forceware}

  • SLI Switch Card Seating Technique

I have read several posts on the issue of getting the stupid SLI switch card to seat properly on the Neo4 Platinum SLI motherboards, but I have been unable to do that on my system. Maybe I just didn't get the technique. I pushed my card into the slot at the "natural" angle it was willing to be pushed in (about 30 degrees from the horizontal) until it went no further. There wasn't really any "click". Then, I had to push the face of the card downwards in order to make it horizontal with the mobo, and rotated the flimsy clip to keep it in place.
My system works, but the clip sometimes lets go, and the card moves back into the 30-degree position. After reading the posts, I tried two things -- 1. Push the card as far back into the slot as possible, and 2. After the card is inside the slot and would go no further, push its face as hard as possible to make it horizontal. I never heard any "click", and my system continues to be flimsy :(
Am I missing something? I would be grateful if anybody could provide an accurate description of the technique.
    Regards
    Angshuman

That is exactly what I did before creating this thread. I mentioned in my first post that I had read several posts related to the issue, but was unable to apply the techniques mentioned therein to solve my problem. This led me to believe that my understanding of the solution may not have been entirely correct, and hence this thread. In case my question was not clear from the previous post, please allow me to rephrase my queries:
    1. It seems the switch card needs to be pushed in at a certain angle. The slot for the card already seems to have a "natural" angle, about 30 degrees from the horizontal (assuming the motherboard itself is horizontal), and the card seems to slide in comfortably at this angle. However, I did not hear or feel any "click". Does the card need to be pushed in at a steeper/flatter angle than the natural angle of the slot?
    2. Does a lot of force need to be applied in order to accomplish Step 1 above successfully (i.e., to get the "click")?
    3. After completing Step 1 from above, does the face of the card need to be pushed in in order to make it horizontal (i.e., parallel to the motherboard) and in order to enable the flimsy lever to swing into place? Is this when the "click" is supposed to occur?
    4. Does a lot of force need to be applied in order to accomplish Step 3 above successfully (i.e., to get the "click")?
Thank you for taking the time to read through this. Once again, I would be grateful if anyone had anything useful to share.

  • SLI Switch card and ATI X800XL in X8 mode?!?

Hi. I've got an MSI K8N-SLI platinum, and a Club 3D Radeon X800XL card. The system runs fine, but something seens to be wrong!
When i unpacked the motherboard, i took a look at the SLI switch card, and removed it from the motherboard, and put it on again quickly. But seems like it won't fit right into it's slot, becase i can't cloase the latch again, and i can see about 70% of the gold finders on the size that's plugged in.
In the manual and on all other fotos, the gold fingers are hidden in the slot, and there seems to be a plenty of space between the other side of the switch card and the 2nd PCIe slot. On my motherboard, it looks like this:
    http://memos.dk/sbn/sli-switch.jpg
When i first powered up the system, i was unable to boot, getting a DRAM init-error, but it didn't help changing the DIMMs. I tried to work a little with the SLI switch card again, and it booted! But something is wrong:
My POST screen says "PCIE VGA Link Width : X 8" as you can see here http://memos.dk/sbn/bios-x8.jpg
As you can see on the 1st picture, the card is inserted with the Non-SLI side into the slot, so it should be X16!!!
What is wrong? Are there any secret ways of making the SLI switch card fit into the slot or what? It's kinda driving me nuts, to see the X8 message in POST every time i boot my system!!!
Iv'e also used CPU-z, with the same result: http://memos.dk/sbn/pciex8.PNG
    Please help me!

Hey, Thanks for posting your solution to this problem.  I also had the similar experience and was really thinking about RMAing this board b/c I thought my PCIe speed was stuck at 8x.  I also didn't know that the card could go much further in with some force.  My latch is so loose now after having to force the latch to turn because I didn't have the SLI card in all the way.  Hopefully MSI can give me a replacement latch.  I have to agree, MSI should've thought of a better design.
I left the latch /clip off my board because it kept popping out. I managed to get SLI mode working with the selector card still sitting at an angle. As long as you push the card far enough into the slot it seems to work. I dont even have to have it sitting parallel with the mobo. Maybe Im just lucky.

  • K8N Diamond Broken Sli switch

    Hello,
I recently had problems seeing no signal on my screen. After checking psu,gpu which all work fine on another pc i noticed that the little plastic thing coming from the motherboard that was holding the small sli switch board was broken and now it doesnt sit horizontially as it should and im thinking this is what is causing me the problems. I dont have a second video card so i dont need sli enabled. Do you have any suggestions on how i can secure that thing into place?

Use a bit of glue or try with a ty-rap to hold it down somehow.

  • I need to test NI-Switch card and Scope Card

I have a PXI-2509 NI-Switch Card and PXI-5112 Scope card,i want to test both the cards.

    Hi Murali
The easiest way to test your boards without programming, is to use the Soft Front Panels. The SFP is installed with the driver. You have one for Switches and one for the Digitizer. You can find them in MAX (Tools>>Soft Front Panels) or under Start>>National Instruments>>NI-DMM or NI-Switch
    Hope this helps.

  • K8n diamond plus sli link card

bought a open box k8n diamond plus from newegg and it didn't come with a sli link card
to go between the 2 video cards.
    where can I buy one?
    thanks

    newegg was of no help.
I got ahold of msi and they're sending me one.
    thanks.
it was a open box board that turned out to be just a board LOL.
i'm still looking for the full install of the creative software.
the drivers load but none of the base creative software is in the
    msi downloads.
so digicell can't fine the creative programs.
i upgraded the bios to 1.20 and am waiting for the sli bridge
so i can put the other 7900gt ko 512meg card in.
runs good with just one, it should run even better when both are in.
    thanks again.

  • KN8 sli graphics card

Just built new system and all seems ok, apart from no graphics ( no signal on monitor)
I have a PCI-express x16 geforce card in slot PCI-E 01 and in non sli mode
The card is brand new and cannot test on another board.Have no other
    PCI cards to try.
Card is connected to monitor only by vga cable.
Where do I start fixing this? Have I missed anything crucial?
I have switched memory - no joy.
Also I dont get any beeps when powered on,but maybe just have speaker wire on wrong.
    Please help.

have you connected all power cables to the mainboard? (check for 4pin power cable for the CPU. ensure its connected to mainboard)
    what show your D-Bracket?
try to pull out(disconnect D-Bracket from mainboard), and leave only one stick of your memory into DIMM slot closed to CPU socket.
pull back power cord from the PSU and Clear CMOS
pull back power cord and try to boot.

  • SLI Video Cards

Is there anyway to see if my two video cards have SLI enabled without opening up the case?

    Hi,
You may try these steps which would help.
    Open NVIDIA Control Panel
Once you've opened the NVIDIA Control Panel, click the Set SLI configuration link under the 3D settings menu.
check if you have the options Do not use SLI technology or Enable SLI technology
If it is set to Enable, then your graphics card is SLI enabled.
Else, you may have to open the tower to check if its SLI or not.

  • 780 GTX Lightning LE SLI - Faulty Card?

OK so i have been having problems with my SLI maxing out at 95c on one card.
When i tested the cards on their own i found that one uses 85% TDP and the other uses 109% TDP for the same clock speed and scores in Valley. One runs about 15-20c hotter than the other and hits 83c on its own on normal auto fan.
Both cards hit 1254mhz on their own on +205 core. But one has a serious leakage and heat problem...
    Any suggestions?

as you do not get that overclocking results are not guaranteed (if a card just meets specs its rated at ITS FINE and not Faulty) but you seem like a noob and do not understand that RESULTS OF OVERCLOCKS ARE NOT ALWAYS GOING TO HAPPEN (Its called the silicon lottery and some are better or worse then others and like I stated before if you want a card with a cherry picked GPU its going to be $100-200 more expensive as they need to be excessively BINNED to test the GPU's Characteristics and the better ones will cost more)!
so Please stop as you just look like a total Noob with you attitude as no one can guarantee it unless they are testing each card at heavy overclocked setting by hand and then they will charge you for doing it! (Most Real overclockers who do it for money and awards get 200-300 of each and sit there testing them to pick the best samples <--- That is cherry picking your own as they expect the best but it costs a huge amount to do so, if not its luck of the draw for general consumers who do not have $200,000 ish to throw away to get one-five good ones)
Lol. Are you kidding? Calling people noobs? Seriously Lol. I have been building PC's since before Prescott.
On the box it says "No Limits" "Built to be perfect"
What was not perfect was the GPU with a huge thermal problem either caused by the cooler or a poor GPU its self. I fully understand the silicon lottery. I have spent more than enough on GPU's over the years.
Im just glad i didnt listen to any of you. Because i have 2 evenly matched cards now running in a high performance overclocked SLI and decent temps to match. Im glad i used a decent retailer with a 14 day money back guarantee. I now have 2 1400mhz GPU's which run nicely in SLI at 1250mhz below thermal limits. Exactly what i paid for.

  • Qosmio X300-11W - SLI graphic cards in future

    Hi,
Im thinking about this laptop. I want it as a replacement of desktop. It seems to be very very good but I have a question.
There is now 9800GTX - does any one of you know if would be available to buy another SAME card to make it SLI?
Also - speed of HDD. It doesnt say what speed is it. 5400 or 7200.
Is there even some one who has some experiences with this laptop or do you know some websites which says something more about this one.
    Thanks

    Hi
The X300 series is new on the market so I didnt find many sources which provide detailed infos about this notebook but I found some details. Thanks to google and to the Toshiba User Manual website (you can find it on the Toshiba European support homage) ;)
    > Also - speed of HDD. It doesnt say what speed is it. 5400 or 7200.
There are 2 HDD installed and both seems to work with 5400rpm
I didnt find any details regarding the SLI option and about the possibility to upgrade the notebook with the second GPU chip but I doubt this would be possible.

  • P7n, 2-card sli, 3rd card for 2nd monitor

Anyone got 2-card SLI and a 3rd vid card for a 2nd monitor working?
System: p7n, 4GB OCZ Vista gold PC-6400 RAM, Pentium D930 for testing, 2 MSI NX8800GTs, Vista x64 installed, SB Xfi that's included with the MB, one 500gb WD SATA hard drive and an IDE DVD.  I plan to move my RAID card over from my eVGA system in my sig if I can get this working...but I need more than 1 monitor.
    Nothing overclocked!!
I can't get SLI to work with a 3rd video card.  I've tried an eVGA 8400GS...no SLI option in the nVidia ctrl panel, eVGA 8500, no boot, the fans spin for a fraction of a second, and the leds flash and that's it, and an ATi 1800xtx...errors in Vista about incompatible hardware.
With the 8400GS, there's no longer any option for SLI in the nVidia control panel, which there was with only the 2 8800GTs on the previous boot.
I've got a 650W PS with dual PCI-E leads, and the system is currently pulling less than 300W, so this shouldn't be an issue.
I've built hundreds of systems, but this is my first SLI system.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, the MB will occasionlly fail to boot with just the 2 8800gts, I just get the fan spin/led flash.  Bad motherboard?  The only way to get it to boot again is to pull one of the8800gts and restart, sometimes the bios needs to be reset.
    psu specs:
    650w
    +3.3   30a
    +5      54a
    +12v1 20a
    +12v2 20a

Got the solution I was looking for via the forums at nvidia.com from jaafaman
    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=60345&st=0&p=330530&
The third card works best as an nVidia so it can use the same driver. Right now, I'm using two 8800GTS640s in SLI and a 6200OC as the third, with a 20" WS for the SLI and two 17" WS attached to the third card.
And to date, Vista is the only OS where this is possible!
Start by mounting the cards, installing the one single ForceWare driver and mounting your monitors as above. Make sure your monitors are working in non-SLI mode before setting SLI up.
Open the Device Manager, and under Display Adapters you will see all three cards listed. Right-Click on the third card's entry and choose the "Disable" option. Close the Device Manager and reboot the system.
Once Vista fires back up with the third card disabled, the option to run SLI will show up in the NVIDIA Control Panel. Enable SLI as you normally would, and regardless of whether or not you have to reboot to enter SLI, once SLI is enabled you must reboot at least one time so that Vista starts up with SLI active.
Once SLI is enabled and Vista has been rebooted, you can open the Device Manager again and re-enable the third card.
At that point, you can do whatever you need with the other monitor(s) as you normally would. You can't extend the SLI rendering to the extra screens, but you can still extend the Vista Desktop, etc. and run apps or child windows as you normally would.
To get out of SLI, reverse the process. The key is in having the third card DISABLED while enabling or disabling SLI with a reboot.
A poster named Fredrik finalized this process as an illustrated guide in the SLI Zone and it was "stickied" there for permanent display. Oddly enough, the Guide is labelled Guide: Run Multiple Monitors with SLI, Vista, 3 Nvidia Cards, 2 cards in SLI and one for up to 2 other monitors. As one of the original participants, the title of your own thread is what caught my eye. Thought maybe someone else had discovered this as well...

  • 570 Twin Frozr II OC SLI - One card fried - Bios wrong?

    Hi there,
I have a new pre-built custom system and in less than two weeks I started getting crashing problems, first of all I would get a BSOD with a WHEA error and after that it would just reset without a BSOD or anything in Kombustor or Furmark.
To cut a long story short, I have RMA'ed one of the two cards and hoping that the Corsair HX850 power supply wasn't the culprit and is adequate that the supplier claim.
I noticed one thing which may have been the cause.
On both cards the bios version was 70.10.17.00.03 with the clocks running at 784 / 1050 / 1572
That is clearly above the spec of the card, so not quite sure what is going wrong there. My supplier is currently out of stock but I know someone who has just purchased the same card from them and the clocks are something like
    750 / 1050 / 1550 or there abouts.
Do you have an updated bios that I can flash to try and prevent this from happening again? I don't have access to the SN and PN right now as the packaging was thrown away by Aria.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, the cards both had the crazy 786 / 1050 / 1572 clocks.
Here's the .222 update, it was only released today. I haven't tried this yet.

    retest
    And retest.
If problem persist then go for 222
Both 221 and 222 has the same fixed/decrease freq. compared to original one as followed:
    750/1500/4000 reduced from 786/1572/4200
v222 has a bit extra vcore if the VGA is still unstable even with reduced clocks.
So try 221 1st, which should take care of the issues.
Only if 221 doesn't helps, then go for 222 instead

  • K8N Diamond - SLI woes - I am almost ready to scrap it ALL! DESPERATE!!

OK - story, brothers pc that I built for him almost a year ago, couple of months after the build, purchased another 6600GT to fill the second slot (both MSI 6600GTs) worked a treat, SLI, boom boom, no dramas. The card was removed from the system (borrowed) a couple of months later to fit to another system as a test card, and he was without it for a couple of months and just running the one 6600GT again. Since then the card has been returned to his system, but I can't for the life of me get the freaking SLI to work again
    System-
    MSI K8N Diamond
    Athlon 3200
    MSI 6600GT x 2
    2 x 512mb PC3200 PQI
    1 x WD SATA II 250GB
    1 x LG 4167B DVDRW
TT Soprano + 400w TT PSU
This evening I have literally tried everything I could think of, started with driver cleaner and then reinstalled the 84.21 drivers I'd had working with it originally but no go.
Then installed the 91.31 drivers in vain knowing full well the result would be no different.
Removed both the cards, flipped the SLI config card and tried each card seperately thinking maybe one of them was dicky, nope.
Put them back with card two in card one's position and vice versa.
    Cleared CMOS
Format C: reinstalled XP, thinking maybe coolbits had dicked something up or there was something yuk in the registry from when I originally removed the second card but HADN'T DISABLED the SLI multi GPU feature in the Nvidia control panel before I shut down and pulled it out.
SP first boot installed all drivers Nforce, sound, network between reboots and then 84.21 again, no joy.
    Desperation sets in
So I'm looking at the piddly TT 400W psu wondering if maybe the couple of months 'work' it had done between the card being removed and then refitted could have been enough to wear it down to a point where it wasn't going to play the 'SLI game' anymore, yep, really clutching at straws by now.
Unplugged it all and fitted up an Antec 480W TruePower 2.0 I had sitting brand new in box for a rainy day, but alas.
So now I sit here typing this rant, staring across at the system to my right which is idling away and smiling at me while it displays the NVidia SLI config box with Nvidias little speel about adding a second graphics card for significant improvements in rendering technology with no option to enable SLI and I'm left thinking, what the hell do I do now  arrrghhhhhhh

Yeah I'm 100% sure this is hardware as opposed to Windows, though it would be nice to know what the PCIE VGA Link Width should be reported as for both a single card and SLI... I've never flashed the BIOS on this, irrelevant considering the SLI WAS working all peachy.
Yeah the SLI switching card has definitely been reversed and re-reversed... I know because I take my time doing it cause I've seen people bend pins in teh slot by putting it in at the wrong angle. I've also had it out and back in a couple of times since to make sure that it wasn't a seating issue.
So my SLI switch is in the right way and my bridge is sitting on top of my two cards but it still won't play ball. Although I've turned the bridge around as was suggested I can't see that would make a difference because I reckon it's the same both ways, the bridge, not the switch that is.
I really don't want to have to RMA the damned thing, bahhhhhhhhhh this will be the second (seperate) Diamond I've had to send back to my wholesaler for RMA !!!
