Dodgy sound on iBook

Hi,
I have an iBook, and I have just noticed that when I'm playing music and DVD's through headphones the sound is really bad...echoey, mettalic and sometimes vocal is almost inaudible over the background music (on a dvd). I have used several different sets of headphones but it doesnt change it.
Sound through the internal speakers is fine however.
now, this may well be an issue with a dodgy connection in the audio jack, but just in case its a software issue (which, knowing these things it may well be) I thought I would post here before going elsewhere for repairs.
Thanks

I have the opposite problem. The internal speaker started to make a staticy chattering sound after using the new Superdrive to do backups. All works fine if I plug in headphones. We have had the beloved 12" iBook G4 open several times as we continue to upgrade it, so it may well be a wire that got roughed up. We've upgraded to the superdrive and are about to put in a new hard drive and more ram so the wire approach to troubleshooting the problem gives us a clue what to look for.
Thanks!

  • Why does my html widget not play sound in ibooks?

I've designed a widget that plays sound correctly in every other browser. It uses an AAC-MPEG4 with the .m4a file extension on all of the sounds. I know the code is working correctly because as I said, it works in any browser. I've checked to volume controls and speakers of the ipad, they work and are turned all the way up. I just wonder if ibooks somehow does not support the javascript .play() command...

This proves what I believed and that is you are not naming the file correctly.  It has got a hidden file extension and if you were using Windows, I would have told you how to reveal the file names properly including hidden extensions of known file names.  I know nothing about MACs so you have yto wait until Murray Summers or John Waller comes here.  They know about Apple MACs and they have been in the business longer than anybody here.
In windows, if we want Notepad to keep the names as it is we normally name the file as:
"welcome.html"       including the quotes so that Notepad will know that it is not the normal text file to be opened in notepad or wordpad (TWO text editors in Windows)
Perhaps you should use my file as a template and then change the text to:
<p>The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.</p>
    Hope this helps.

  • No stereo sound on iBook G4

When I listen to music through my iBook, whether with headphones or through the computer speakers, it only plays through the left headphone/speaker. Actually, it plays very faintly through the right side. I have tried multiple headphones and media players, and the problem persists.
I just installed the latest Mac updates, if that matters.
    Any ideas?

    go under system preferences>sound>balance
for some reason it shifts the balance to the left sometimes...

  • Sound on iBook G4 is dead

A few months ago I was on my iBook G4 and suddenly my sound died, also my microphone stopped working as well. I think it happened right after I upgraded iTunes.
    system.log reports
    May 17 19:00:07 ibook kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != err" failed in "AppleLegacyAudio/AppleTexas2Audio/AppleTexas2Audio.cpp" at line 960 goto
    Exit
    Any ideas?
I searched all over the net and I found people with similar problems but no solution.
I tried resetting pram, nram, and a few other types of resets..

Ok I did what you said, however searching for AppleDallasDriver.ktext didn't yield anything, but I know it's located in the extensions folder, so I deleted it and made a copy of it. Now when I restart I get an error message stating:
    "System extension cannot be used.
The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleFWAudio.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update."
I deleted that extension as well (AppleFWAudi.kext) and restarted, and still no sound and access.log still says the same original error "ibook kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != err" failed in "AppleLegacyAudio/AppleTexas2Audio/AppleTexas2Audio.cpp" at line 960 goto
    Exit"
Also I just noticed my sound preferences has another device called "Aggregate Device"
I don't know what that means

  • Short "car alarm" sound from Ibook G3

I have a dual USB Ibook that has started making the dreaded car alarm sound when waking from sleep, and sometimes completely randomly.. I have found it impossible to find anything about this issue until I read a similar thread here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1251153&#1251153
My question is: Why has Apple not written anything about this in their support forums?, it's a pretty straight forward thing by the look of it (your hard drive is about to implode!) The SMART status of the HDD is "failing", and I expect to have to replace it very soon. It would have been nice if a little more help regarding this problem was available, so c'mon Apple, write it up please? Thanks, Harry

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
As you may have seen in searching for information about your issue, this is a user-to-user forum, so addressing Apple here doesn't get the job done if you want to communicate with the company.
This happens so rarely that, apparently, an Apple Knowledge Base article hasn't been written on the phenomenon. It would seem apparent, particularly with the S.M.A.R.T. status showing as "failing," that it is just one more indication of the imminent demise of the hard drive.
There used to be a Feedback form you could fill out for such requests, but since iBooks are now discontinued, the Feedback form is gone.
If you would like to make a comment on another product's Feedback form, they are available here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
The closest would be the MacBook, but they have a totally different drive (SATA instead of ATA), so the siren may not even happen on them.
Good luck with your new hard drive.

  • Epub sound on ibooks (exported to epub (fixed layout)

I download this exercises files from adobe.com
Add interactivity to fixed layout EPUBs | Adobe InDesign CC tutorials
then i export the file to epub (fixed layout), this works perfect in my iMac iBooks, but the sound don't work in my iPad iBooks, any idea?

    Hi,
There is an issue on iOS7 with playing sounds, with latest iOS8 there is no such issue. Issue could be there if you trying on iOS7, I would suggest trying same epub on iOS8 and see if issue is there as well.
    Thanks

  • Popping sound on iBook in Tiger

Last week, I purchased a second-hand iBook G4 (1.42ghz, 1,5Gb of RAM). It came with OS X Tiger. I updated to X.4.11 but I got the problem that several Macbooks had as well : the popping sound from the speakers; every time I tried to increase or decrease the volume by using the function keys on the keyboard, I heard a strange 'popping' sound. Not a real problem, but annoying all the same. I had bought Leopard to install on my G5 iMac and thought I'd give Leopard a try on the iBook. It runs without problems, although I've got the impression it's not as reponsive as Tiger. However, the popping noise is gone. Now, I would prefer to reinstall Tiger as it runs more smoothly on the iBook, but I was wondering whether there is a solution to the popping sound problem in Tiger. Thx.

the popping sound from the speakers; every time I tried to increase or decrease the volume by using the function keys on the keyboard, I heard a strange 'popping' sound.
I think that that's the normal "signal" sound that you're changing the volume.
Mine does it too as have every iBook that I own/ed.
It was in Tiger and Panther.
    This is from Mac Cast:

Too lazy to type it myself.

  • Sound problems, iBook g4

The sound output on my iBook G4 will change on its' own. Once or twice a week it will switch all output to my left speaker, and I have to go into system properties on my own and switch it back to center.

Hi Banihex and Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Try Balanced. It is supposed to resolve such problems, although I have had no need to use it myself.

  • Sound input - iBook

    Hey guys,
I'm on my way to convincing my mum to purchase a Mac computer. An iBook would be ideal, however she needs sound input so she can record things from a PA desk into garageband. I can do it on my iMac (my friend has done it before) and said I can, so I'm assuming I can. However it would be great for her, portability wise.
Is there an option/accessory/something that has audio in/line in or something like that which will help in this situation?
    Thanks HEAPS guys
edit: This was posted in the iBook forum and they suggested I come here. There was an accessory posted from Griffin. http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic2/index.php - Have any of you had experience with using the iMic in the way that my mum is needing?
    Thanks!
    - leighton

The iMic is exactly what I was about to recommend (and then I saw your edit B-)>
The iMic is not going to be the highest quality, but for a few quid, it's a very good and inexpensive solution. I used one for about a year and was happy with it.
And BTW, we used it with mixing consoles on an iBook as well, so it should work for your Mum just fine.
Good luck! --HangTime [Will Compute for Food] B-|>

  • HS-950 Dodgy sound and microphone failure. Annoying as hell.

    hey,
I have read around these forums but cannot seem to find a proper fix for this problem. I am on the latest drivers and all my windows 7 64bit files are up to date.
My sound seems to power down after a good 20 minutes of playing a game or just listening to music. Also my microphone distorts everything i say when i am trying to use the voice communication software Mumble.
Is there anything i can do to fix this problem or am i going to have to go out and buy another headset.....
    Thanks for any help.

  • Reconnecting sound clips

I did something a little bit stupid in the my sequence and am wondering if there is a magical little button that will help me out!
I orginally dragged clips into the timeline with the idea that I would be redoing the sound from these clips in post as it is pretty dodgy sound from the camera's mic, and then when editing, unlinked the sound from the video and deleted the sound clips.
I would however, now like to use some of that sound from the original clips and was wondering if there is a way to "reconnect" them to their video clips.
The long way would be to find the IN and OUT points for every single clip again and this is going to take forever as I took mulitple IN/OUT points from the same shot in the viewer when editing, and there would be at least a thousand to go through. Is this my ONLY option??? Bascially, i'd be editing the scene(s) together all over again
    Thanks

Put the playhead at the start of the first clip to fix
    Hit "F" to match frame
    Hit F10 to overwrite edit
Hit the down arrow to move you to the start of the next edit
    Rinse and repeat.

  • Titanium G4 vs. iBook G4

I'm looking into buying a mac laptop - was planning on getting an ibook G4 when I realized I may be able to get a used powerbook for as much. How does a titanium G4 compare to a newer ibook G4? Is it in any way outdated? How's the battery life? Any difference I should know about?

    Hi Patrick,
    There's no FireWire 800.
There's no FW800 on any iBooks either.
I think all of them had Airport built in
All TiBooks are AP capable, but not all came with a card already installed.
Also, some things to add to what Marc has already said:
TiBooks use original AP, while new iBooks have AP Extreme built in.
In general, iBooks get better wireless reception than TiBooks (though my TiBook's reception is as good as any iBook would get).
New iBooks max out at 1.42GHz; fastest Ti ever built was 1GHz.
The Ti has a larger, higher resolution 15" display compared to the iBook's lower resolution 14".
    iBook has a faster/better GPU.
Ti supports DVI display, iBook does not.
iBook has built in Bluetooth, cannot add internal BT to a Ti.
iBook has scrolling trackpad and sudden motion sensor which parks the HD heads to protect it in case of too sudden movement.
The iBook has a more "robust" polycarbonate case with no paint to worry about. However, it is still possible to find a TiBook with no paint/scratch issues (I have one, though it's not for sale).
Ti RAM maxes out at 1GB, iBook at 1.5, and it's faster DDR RAM.
Ti has a line level sound port, iBook does not.
Marc mentioned the hinges already, but to add to that, TiBooks have had more than their fair share of hinge issues, which is one reason why they were completely redesigned in the AlBook line, and iBooks have the same style of hinge as the AlBooks.
Ti ports are on the back, iBook ports are on the sides. Personal preference, but I like them on the back.
Personal preference again, but in general, I've liked every PB's keyboard better than any iBook's keyboard, though I have not tried the keyboard on the new iBook offerings.
In size, Ti is slimmer and trimmer than iBook. And aesthetically, I've not seen a laptop design I like better than the TiBook. It's a classic in my book.
If price is a big factor, and you find a 1GHz/1GB RAM TiBook in excellent condition at a price lower than the iBook, possibly even with remaining AppleCare warranty, personally, I would lean toward it, even though a new iBook 1.42GHz would definitely be faster.
Other than that, given that the iBook is so much newer, of course it has some newer/better/faster features, so if you can live with the iBook's drawbacks Marc and I have pointed out (PC card slot is a big one for me), that may be the way for you to go.
    Good luck with your decision.

  • IBooks 2 supports ePub3 format

    Dear All,
While I was trying to open epub 3 file that has rich layout out interactivity which was build using ePub 3 spec results a bad output and sounds like iBooks 2 will not support ePub 3. – .
Hope iBook 2 is just to support the new ibooks text book version, and considerable we have to follow the Apple own guide to process Fixed and Normal epub which are designed based on ePub 2 specification.
    Questions:
    1. Will iBooks 2 supports ePub 3 files.
    2. Do we have to wait for a revised version of Apple guide that will be build based out of epub 3 spec or Apple will have their own standards?
    Thanks,
    ROCXY

Not much point converting old epubs, as they dont hve any content that requires the ibooks format tags.
If you want to produce an ibook format file, take your raw content and pump it into the ibooks author.
I do hope however they do support epub3 also, as I really dont want to have YEAT ANOTHER READER to get all my content. Kindle, ibooks, overdrive (required for my local librays DRM system).
I tend to run everythgin I can through Calibre to create a nice common epub, just like I used to do for audio to make a nice portable .mp3.
iBooks not supporting epup3 would be like a media player not supporting mp3. Actually just like a kinde.

  • Apple DVD Player question. Is there is any possibility to play DTS sound?

Sorry for off topic but there is no special discussion on DVD Player issues.
Did anybody knows how to get sound on iBook from DTS track of DVD disk? I mean there is no sound out of speakers when switching DTS sound while playing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ivan

Thanks for getting back to me Drew.
Preferences were set to open DVD Player, and it does open upon insertion.
It just doesn't +auto play+ the disc. I have to use File: Open DVD Media and navigate to the Video TS to play it.
However, I do have a third party Dbl Layer burner, attached to the Powerbook.
As a test, I connected it to the G5, selected it with DVDSP for the format, and voila, it now auto plays on both computers.
Perhaps the G5's superdrive just will not play nicely with 16x media... It's the only thing I can think of.
And if so, it's a bummer that the G5's superdrive wont format an autoplay disc with this media, (if that's the issue.) I will post in the G5 forum for some clarity on that. And then find appropriate media for the G5.

  • IBook G4 1GHz -- combo drive spitting out all CDs/DVDs since 10.4.5

My 12 inch iBook G4 1GHz has been spitting out any CD/DVD inserted (both blank as well as non-blank ones) for the last few hours.
Also, my system crashed at least 4 times today. And when I restart, it starts off with noisy fan sound and just stops without booting.
When I press the power button again, it makes the same sound that iBook makes when it is forcefully shutdown. Now, when I press the power button again, it boots normally.
