Dodgy view in FCP5 canvas

Morning all,
I shot some film in SD and have been working on it in FCP5. The view of the footage in the canvas is really small and, when I try to enlarge it, the image quality becomes very poor. The frame size under image properties reads 1049 x 576 if that helps.
I am also concerned that, as the image is small and framed with black on the Canvas, will this be the way it presents on TV once burned to disk?
Jo

  • Why does my clip have a higher quality in the viewer than the canvas?

When I am editing, I have noticed that sometimes my images and clips have a drastically higher quality in the viewer than the canvas/timeline, what is causing this, and how do I edit and export my films with the highest quality possible?

    >Why does my clip have a higher quality in the viewer than the canvas?
The answer is very simple; the Viewer shows the media at its native resolution while the Canvas shows the media at the Sequence resolution.  I'd bet that in your case, the original media is of higher resolution that the Sequence in the Timeline.

  • I now get a blank (white) screen in the Viewer.  Can still drop video from the viewer into the canvas, but don't see it in the viewer.  Please help!

It doesn't seem to matter what project I'm working on... the picture in the viewer is gone.  All I see is a blank (white) screen.  If I put the cursor over the viewer and drag to the timeline, the clip will appear on the time line (and in the canvas) but I don't see it in the viewer.  I usually edit my clips in the viewer and not on the canvas.  Can anyone explain why this might be happening and how I might fix.  I'm suspecting I must have messed up one of the settings but I'll be darned if I can figure out which one or how to fix.  Please help!

David.  Thank you very much.   The problem was not with the canvas but rather the Viewer.  But the solution was the same.  Somehow, the Viewer window was re-set to Alpha.  I changed it back to RGB.... and the picture is back.   These issues are often very simple.... but they can drive you bats if you don't know the answer.   Very grateful.  Tim

  • Can´t import files or iMovie projects, and are unable to view on the canvas

I have just gotten the Final Cut Express software, but i have unfortunately run into some problems:
The biggest problem I am having is all my footage no longer works. When I go to import it into FCE, it gives me the error:
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
This is also true for my iMovie projects: it gives me an error, and a list of the problems.
I can view the video in the viewer, but when I export it to the timeline and try to view it via the canvas (to see if it matches the music), it says that the video is "unrendered". Is there another video format I should be using that would enable me to view this footage with the imported music in the canvas? Or must I re-render every time I make a change (which I am sure I shouldn't have to!)? I'm very new to FCE so I do not understand it fully.
    Thank you!

  • FCP 7, viewer clear, but canvas and export blurry

Started with screen recordings provided to me that made using quicktime 10
took quicktime 10 screen recordings and converted them to prores422 HQ in compressor (settings from compressor below)
    imported into FCP 7.
They look great in viewer, reasonably sharp and crisp, but them very blurry in canvas and when I export to quicktime movie (not using quicktime conversion). Been using FCP 7 a couple years but my knowledge in many aspects is sub professional.
Tried creating a new sequence to get the sequence to match the settings of the quicktime prores422 screen capture movies but to no avail. The settings of the sequence are not the same as the screen capture movies...I even tried to change the sequence settings but no luck (then exited FCP without saving so as not to screw anything up).
Im probably breaking basic rules here...any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!!!
Compressor settings for file conversion above:

Here is additional information on the problem.
My sequence includes mostly screen captures, but also some other video (settings below) and some JPEGs.  The other video and the JPEGs look fine...both in canvas and when I export sequence to quicktime.  The screen captures look terrible...text is very blurry.  Same screen captures look fine in my viewer, just goes awry when in canvas and export.
Format of screen capture clips (quicktime 10 screen capture > compressor prores 422 HQ):
1440x900, apprle prores 422 HQ, data rate 5.6 MB/S, pixel aspect square, field dominance none, composite normal.  Started with 4 files of the screen capture from compressor, then edited them into many little pieces in FCP...the size of those files post compressor are around 2GB each.
The sequence (by default) had settings of:
frame size: 720x480 NTSC DV 3:2
pixel aspect ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV 720x480
    field dominance lower(even)
quicktime compressor settings: apple prores 422 LT
Vast majority of clips are the same as screen capture clips.  But just in case its part of the problem, I have also have a couple video clips of that have settings:
    frame size:  720x480
    compressor:  DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    data rate 3.6mb/s
pixel aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
    field dominance: Lower/even
also have a couple JPEGs, their settings are:
    frame size 2500x2084
    compressor: photo-jpeg
    field dominance: none
Thank you!!!  I've been using final cut a while, but don't think I would have gotten anywhere without the help and generosity of people that are way beyond my knowledge and skills.  I am happy to provide any more info.  I really appreciate it.

  • Stills - Aspect Ratio Problem: Viewer vs. Canvas

Working in DV/NTSC 720x480, A/V settings correct and matched.
I've prepared a number of stills in Photoshop CS set to non-square pixels. I import these images into FCP and everything looks fine in the Viewer, and the aspect ratio under the Motion/distort tab shows a setting of "0".
But, when I then drop the image into the timeline the aspect ratio of the image changes, the yellow render bar appears, and in the Motion/distort tab in the Canvas the aspect ratio changes to a setting of -12.5.
If the pixel aspect ratio was corrected in Photoshop at the outset, why does this occur? And why is this happening in the Canvas only and not in the Viewer as well???
    Many thanks.

why does this occur? And why is this happening in the Canvas only and not in the Viewer as well???<<</div>
When you load an image or clip from the Browser to the Viewer, it displays in it's native size and aspect ratio. But once you plave it i a Sequence (Timeline), it takes on the Sequence's settings and will display accordingly.

  • Want my external monitor to view Final Cut Canvas

Just bought an external monitor specifically for clients to view Final Cut on a large screen.
Is there a way (button?) to use as opposed to dragging and enlarging my canvas over to the new monitor every time?
    thx.

There may be a way to set your second monitor (you've got it hooked up thru the back of the computer as a second monitor, not just a mirror, yes?
Go to VIEW - VIDEO PLAYBACK... see if there isn't an option for digital playback-MAIN and or another option. MAIN will just put it on your main screen. If there is another option... try that. Then, VIEW - EXTERNAL VIDEO -- ALL FRAMES.
    Short of that...
Hold down the OPTION button and click on WINDOW... then set user option 1. Resize your windows across so your canvas is now in the other monitor and make it full size. Resize the other windows as you feel necessary.
You can switch back and forth from those by hitting SHIFT-U and CONTROL-U.
    Coupla options anyway.
    Good luck,

  • View images on canvas?

I sometimes need to resize banner ads created in photoshop. If I open the file and resize the canvas, some layer elements become hidden on far corners of the canvas. Usually I can click around and drag them into the visible area of my file. Sometime they are hard to locate. Is there some way to view image that extend beyond the image margins into the canvas/pasteboard/background?

    Try:
    Image menu/Reveal All.

  • Problem viewing text in canvas

    Good day.
I've tried to use Canvas for wiewing long text in midp application.
I'm using drawString() method of class Graphics.
For calculating the substring viewed horizontally a screen I'm using the method stringWidth() of class Font.
    The font is:
    Font f = Font.getFont(Font.FACE_PROPORTIONAL, Font.STYLE_PLAIN, Font.SIZE_MEDIUM);
In some phones the rows are clipped.
I've tried using Font.FACE_MONOSPACE and / or Font.SIZE_SMALL but with the same result.
Debuging code I've seen that the value calculate from stringWidth() method id less than the with of the screen, but really is clipped.
    Why?
    Best regards and good work.
    Stefano Errani

sure you're not setting clipRect() anywhere? I've never seen what you're describing, and I've done LOTS of canvas/text work. hmm. i'm sure there's a good explanation

  • Problem viewing video in canvas window

Been editing a project in FCP for good few days now and worked fine up until today when I cannot view any of the sequence from the timeline in the canvas. But it is playing because playhead is moving and sound track plays fine
    Please help!
    Thanks
    Richard

    Glad you got it fixed.
For future reference, the W key is the toggle for the Image/Image+Wireframe/Wireframe modes that Nick's screenshot shows. I come across many folks who - thinking they're in a text input box - press W and end up with the black screen.
Of course, I see one of those dudes in the mirror every morning.

  • Cannot View Video in Canvas AFTER edits are made. Why?

so i just received Final Cut Pro for my birthday because i have been craving an amazing video editing system. I use this for comedic videos with my friends and to create Halo 3 Montages.
I have already saved clips in iMovie '08, i am able to import those clips and play them in canvas and the preview or whatever the one on left is, but when i insert file transitions or any effects for that matter, the section where i put the effect has a red line on the timeline of the sequence. When i try to play it in canvas that particular part has the blue/black screen and reads "undrendered!"
How can I fix this? please help...
Also, like many people, i love music in my videos, but I try importing an MP3 from iTunes and when it imports it can play in the left side player/preview player (whatever its called) but once again if I insert the MP3 into the sequence to play along with my video, all i get is the "beeping" sound instead of the the actual song.

    Hi Voltaic,
    Congatulations!
I think, now that you played a little bit with FCP, it's time read a little in tha manual. Rendering is explained in there.
The red line you are talking about tells you you need to render. That is to process the effect into a movie-file (AKA Render file).
The easy answer is: Select everything under the red line and hit Command-R (or menu: Sequence > Render Selection)
As said: More about rendering in the manual.
Actually the same applies to audio. The beeping sound means the audio needs to be rendered. Select and use Command R. But with every cut you make you'll need to render again, so it wuld be better to convert your 44.1 kHz mp3 file to 48 kHz AIFF. That doesn't need a render....
By the way: The left video screen is called Viewer, the right one is the Canvas. You can see those names in the top of those windows.

  • FCP7: White Viewer and White Canvas (set to RGB)

    Hello,
I had been using the universal version of the first Final Cut Studio for a few years now without any issue. When I upgraded to FCS3, I can't get FCP7 to show any footage (or even Color Bars) in the Viewer or Canvas. You hear the audio of the footage but it's all WHITE. Both frames are set to RGB (not alpha).
I have fully re-installed FCP7 but I still see the same results. It doesn't seem to matter what easy setup I use either.
I can take the same DV or HDV footage and play it in Quicktime outside of FCP7 so I'm confident that my onboard graphics card is not having some sort of trouble.
I have a case open with AppleCare but so far they have not resolved this issue.
Is this White Viewer and Canvas issue happening to anyone else here?
    Thanks.

    Trash your preferences?
#44: FCP acting weird - Trash Prefs
Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • Image Quality Viewer vs. Canvas

    Welcome to the family.
IN addition to the posts you have read so far, this topic comes up often and there are literally hundreds of similar threads. If you search for them, you will find several helpful suggestions and explanations. There is also a section in the FCP manual that details how dpi and pixels are related. It's a rough concept for print people to grasp but your video window is only about 800x500 pixels. If you bring in an image that's 1600x1000 pixels, it's going to be scaled down to fit, throwing away 3 out of every four pixels, or you're only going to see 1/4 of the image through the window if you leave it at 100%.

  • Photos sharp in viewer, blurry in canvas

I have a project that intersperses photos with live action. The photos are variously digital shots (jpeg) and scanned shots (tif).
I select a photo in the browser, double click to open in the viewer, set the duration and insert in to the sequence. The photo is now visible in both the viewer & canvas windows - in the viewer it is sharp, in the canvas slightly blurry.
The output (on DVD viewed on a TV) is 'acceptable' (more blurry than I'd like) and I've lived with it for a while, but I was wondering why the apparant quality loss?
I've tried converting both types to .psd with the same results. Any help appriciated.
    Thanks.

I have experienced this problem and have used the following:
If the still image is adjusted in the Timeline, by using the motion tab in the viewer, which changes the pixels within the image (eg., changing the scale, aspect ratio or rotation) this sometimes causes significant blurring. To avoid that, I make my images at least 144 pixels per sq. inch (2 x 72 which is the resolution of DVD video). This (I think) allows the extra pixels to be used in the changing rather than new interpolated pixels being created by FCE. However, if the image is simply moved (left/right/up or down) or is cropped, these do not seem to affect the image quality.
If the image is unacceptably blurry, I find using the Unsharp filter (Video Filters > Unsharp Mask) restores the sharpness.

  • Can't see audio wave in viewer after FCP5 project updated into FCP2

After updating my project from old FCP 5 version running on Tiger to FCP2 running on Leopard, I can't see the audio wave picture inthe viewer window. Is there an explanation for this?
    Thanks assistance.
    Ray

You can try clearing the waveform cache in your project folder. Press Shift Q to open the System Preferences window. Look for the location that is set as your Waveform Cache location, then use the Finder to navigate to that folder. Remove the cache files from there, and then try relaunching your project to see if that solves your issue.
