Does 24/7 operation shorten (external) hard disk life
- or not?
That's a question that has been asked over the years so many times that by now you'd expect there to be a consensus on the right answer - but of course there isn't.
The answer comes down to whether or not the wear rate on the bearing is higher with steady-state constant running with continuous thrust forces and temperature, or with the varying thermal and pressure loading caused by spin up/spin down cycles. So much depends on small differences in materials and tolerances that it would probably be impossible to give an answer that is right for all drives in all situations.
What can be said is that in a purely theoretical sense, a bearing and thrust face capable of carrying the load of full speed, steady-state operation, will wear slower than the same bearing and thrust face subjected to varying loads and temperatures - conditions where not only is wear much higher, but patterns of wear more likely to cause the bearing to fail. But how these two conditions relate to each other is as much about the operating temperature in steady-state, the tolerance of the bearing/thrust face and the number of spin down/up cycles the drive would go through in what period of time.
I've got several system that run 24/7, including two PPC minis, both with Seagate drives. The older one is 26 months old and running perfectly. I've also got a G4 powermac with 3 internals which runs 24/7 and has done since it was new in late 1999. The original drive failed in 2001 and the replacement, along with the two others, has run constantly since with no problems. The original was a Quantum, the replacement was a Maxtor and the other two are Seagate. On my experience I'd say that constant running hasn't caused any sign of distress on these systems.
It has generally been my view that with competently designed components and systems, continuous steady state operation should result in lower mechanical wear and less risk of thermal stressing. If I had to make an educated guess, I'd say that the higher internal temperatures in the mini may render that a little more marginal than for larger systems, but that shouldn't impact on external drives unless poorly manufactured. I would also say that since laptops in general have no significant history of drive failures despite their far higher temperatures, there's more chance that you're the victim of bad luck that poor choice of operating regime!

  • Hard disk life with frequent data write and read

    Dear All,
Can you kindly advise on the effect of frequent write / read on shortening of (ordinary low-cost, 80 to 250G, office desktop PC type) hard disk life.
File size is IMAQ iamge file (300k byte)
1000 wite / read per day  for 1 day in a week   (6 days low activity, 1 day busy)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it should be no problem, from a life time point of view, it averages to ~150 a day over a week. Of more concern will be that you will probably start having disk fragmentation issues in a fairly short period, where continuous blocks of disk space become harder to find and the data then has to be spread over numerous locations on the drive. One end result of this is increased drive activity as the heads have to be moved all over to recover a file's data. Drives these days get a pretty good workout, with people storing thousands of MP3 music file, videos, digital camera pictures. Particularly with the MP3's they will have a lot of files that get accessed frequently. The drive, depending on O/S, will also get a lot of "random" activity, particularly if you have an indexing program such as Google desktop, running. Watch the HD light on your machine for a while and you will see it start blinking like crazy every so often when apparently nothing is running.  Of course if the files you are saving are critical they should be backed up regularly to some other drive or media.

  • Best software for doing full backups to ext. hard disk to to be used to restore system

As a new PC owner I wanted to find out what the best software for doing full backups to external hard disk,  to to be used to restore the system if primary primary disk crashes. Im aware that Windows, Acronis and Paragon all have software that doing varying degress of back and resore functions.

    lasvideo,
My favorites are ShadowProtect to do an "image backup" of boot drive and Beyond Compare for backing up files for all other "data" arrays. ShadowProtect does not seem to have much market share compared with Ghost and Acronis, but I really love it.
    What I like about ShadowProtect:
    - Extremely fast (complete image backup for 61GB of files on my boot SSD RAID 0 array to a RAID data array takes less than 3 minutes)
    - Can do image backups across a LAN; restores from boot CDROM and USB device
    - Allows for backups from one controller and restore of OS on a different controller and/or RAID configuration (has HAL tools; Hardware ? Layer I think)
    - Can "mount" an image backup as a drive letter and see (and copy) all directories, files, etc. that are contained in the archive
What I like about Beyond Compare:
    - Can choose what to backup and what to ignore very easily (for example you can set it to ignore certain files or directory names to ignore and then save how you set things up as a "session")
    - Only needs to copy over files that are new or have changed since your last backup
    - Makes it very easy to selectively delete files from your backup

  • Does OS X Mavericks shorten a battery life time in Retina Macbook Pro?

Does OS X Mavericks shorten a battery life time in Retina Macbook Pro?

Thank you again for your advice, and I am sure your right but as a simplton I have to argue that the problem is asociated with Mavericks in so much as - one does not have any of these issues running any previous OS and therefore, the issue is a Mavericks one when upgrading.  It is all to easy for the techies to say "its on your mac' if proper testing and development had been done on,  at the very least , the apple software the upgrade should not have issues.  its a bit late after installing and having Apple update remind you all the time to upgrade then to say sorry - your fault for having incompatible software like mail .  However, I suggest you look at the other apple logs / site that complain of battery drain after mavericks they all point to issues that are as a RESULT of the upgrade and yes technically you will argue that is because the original software in not compatible or some such.  Lets not go on and on I have sorted the problem - don't use Mail and battery life is OK, Use mail and watch it drain.  Once again thank you please don't feel the need to respond.

  • "Hard Disk - (3F0) BootDevice not found" after removing Windows

    Hi.
I own a ProBook 4530s that came with preinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium. I'm a long-time Linux user, so the first step I took after buying it was shrinking the OS partition and installing Arch Linux on the newly created free space. I have used the notebook in this setup for something like a year now, but since I rarely even boot to Windows, I decided to gain some free space by deleting them entirely. Using cfdisk, I deleted their partitions.
After a short time (about a day), I had the machine powered down, and I found some old labelless CD I wanted to inspect. I started the computed and inserted it into the drive. It was apparent it was a Windows XP installation CD, so I turned the computer off (before it finished the phase of loading drivers).
(It's likely that the previous paragraph is unrelated to the error message, because the installation shouldn't even touch the disk at that phase. I also don't reboot often, so I'm not sure whether did the computer boot between deleting the partition and booting the Windows XP CD.)
The next time I tried to boot the PC, I was greeted with "Hard Disk - (3F0) BootDevice not found". All HP diagnostics were OK, and when I instructed the GRUB on an Ubuntu live CD to boot into my hard drive, it booted normally.
I admit the BIOS might be somehow confused by the partition table I have, as it begins with a lot of free space and has no NTFS partitions, but I believe BIOSes shouldn't be dependent on the OS I run. So, I have a few questions:
Does the HP BIOS try to detect Windows, and does it do anything differently if it doesn't find Windows on the hard drive? I googled around, and didn't find anyone with experiences running just Linux on my notebook (just dual-booting...).
If it does, is there some way I could convince it to boot into the hard drive even through it doesn't have Windows on it?
    Thanks.

I see the same error but my situation still allows me to boot up but only with the secondary HDD in the DVD writer bay. For more details, please see an existing thread on http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/Hard-Disk-3F0/m-p/1670523#M76013.
I am suspecting that it has something to do with BIOS not reading the MBR or something.
Have you sorted your issue on this yet?
    Cheers

  • Hard Disk - (3F0) BootDevice not found" Error Message how do i fix this

Hard Disk - (3F0) BootDevice not found" Error Message

Sounds like the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance you have a 320GB hdd now so you could use a 500GB hdd but not a 250GB hdd.

  • Error: The Boot Camp partition "/dev/disk0s3" used by Hard Disk 1 is not supported.

I installed Lion a couple of weeks ago, and had Parallels 5 installed, but it would no longer run.  Unfortunately, I spent the money to upgrade to Parallels 6 prior to seeing the advice to get Lion to run with 5.  Oh well.  But now, it won't run with 6 either.  What to do?
    Here;s the error again:
The Boot Camp partition "/dev/disk0s3" used by Hard Disk 1 is not supported.

You should be able to do this using the Boot Camp Assistant app. There is an option to "Restore the startup disk to a single volume". That should eliminate the Boot Camp partition without harming your Mac OS partition. Even so, make sure you back up your Mac OS X partition data before you do this, just to be safe.

  • Hard disk error, HDD not appearing in bios

My laptop HP Envy15  fails to load Windows and displays boot device not found. The HP UEFI diagnostics for hard disk failed the Short DST test with failure code U0EDBK-6Q66G1-MFGJXG-60U003. Does this mean I have to replace my hard drive? My laptop's product ID is E6G06PA#UUF and I have Win8 -64 installed on it upgarded to 8.1. All this started to happen when I copied recovery drive to USB and deleted recovery drive on my machine to increase space..... my machine started freezing and crashed...... now even chkdsk, recovery or reset with new partition is not working.....though if back up usb is connected and if I go to restore system through UEFI  I can see all Partitions........ where is problem and what should i do???? plz plz plz help...
    Thanks,
    Dr bilal ashiq

    Hi,
The above failure ID refers to Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure. You have to replace the Hard disk drive. If the laptop is under warranty, then you can contact HP Support to get the Hard disk drive replaced. Also you have to reinstall the Operating System on the new Hard disk drive using recovery disk.

  • Hard Disk failing or not?

Disk Utility lists one of my disks as "S.M.A.R.T. Status - Failing" but on another hard disk program ( Drive Genius 3) the disk's S.M.A.R.T. is verified.
    Soooo which one is it?

DU does not check sectors or media or files or ... lots of the SMART fields.
Number of retries for reads or writes is only one.
A bad sector is the leading indicator of a failing drive.
DU only checks and repairs the directory. And if you click on the top level of a drive (WDxxxxx for instance) it checks the partition tables and can make some changes but not to any blocks.
There is a nifty program "SMART Utility" which has gotten good marks from people.
