Does a Clipping Mask effect just one layer?

Hello everyone ...                                                                                      Level: Newbie   OS: Win7 64bit   Ia: Cs6
Once I use a Clipping Mask on a layer is the entire document covered in a mask?
And/or is all the artwork from then on inside the mask?
I've read about how to add and how to remove art from a mask. I've read about how to make and release and lots of other things.
So, then I went and found a lesson that contained the use of a Clipping Mask.
But I'm stuck... again.
I am suppose to Select the main shape and "just" copy it and move it down (doesn't say rather to Paste in front or back but I assumed in back ~ not that it has mattered thus far)
However, while making the main shape I used Gradient Mesh and used an Offset to create a "replica" and so when I go to Select the main shape the mesh is selected and so when I Paste (in back ~ seems most logical) and then move it down the details such as the colors of the Gradient and other such things are visible in front ~ ??
So, I have been trying to abate my problem in lots of different ways.
I have tried using the Pen tool to draw behind the main shape, I've tried making a New Layer and placing it above and below and inbetween the main shape layer, I've tried adding the artwork to the Mask ... I've tried everything I can think of and I've been through many an article in the manual and FAQ's to no avail.
I suppose, what I think I need to know ... is, how ... how on earth do I draw behind this main shape? Am I not able to do it becuase I am not getting behind the Mask?
(Let me apologise to those that HATE it when Newbies follow lessons/tuts and who HATE it when we come here to ask for help. I'm doing my best to learn and to find answers on my own before heading here for help)
Please lmk if you would be better able to help me with pictures of my layers and the art. Thanx so much for your time!!

Thanks as well for your patience with me! It can be difficult to communicate this way, but all we can do is try our best.
As for the issue regarding the author's "main shape"...
Here I have an object with a gradient mesh:
If you follow the directions in step 3 of the tutorial, the author creates a duplicate by going to Object > Path > Offset Path.
And then inputs "0" for the offset value.
I shifted my original gradient-meshed object down a little bit, and there you can see is the simple shape that you were seeing in the author's image. Then they just filled it with that gold gradient and scaled it down.
And as for clipping masks...
As I mentioned before, a clipping mask will only affect the objects and groups you had selected when you created it. For exhaustive information about clipping masks, see this link: http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/clipping-masks.html
I hope this was helpful! Good luck!

  • How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure?

    Hi guys,
I am editing a map and need my map split into multiple rectangular segments. My map is made up of many layers and sub layers which I need to preserve. When I clipping mask the map with a rectangle all of the map's subs layers merge into one layer. How do I make a clipping mask whilst preserving sub layer structure? It seems like a 'layer mask' is the correct tool but doesn't seem like CS6 has it?
    Cheers
    Mat

I avoid sublayers, because they really were never thoroughly developed, and when you open files, you get all your layers flipped open.
So for me paste in front works great for pasting a mask directly above the element you want to mask. Unfortunatley paste in front does not work well with sublayers so you will need to drag the mask down into the the sublayer. But atleast if you have a complex document with many sublayers, the paste in fornt gets you close.
eg; Mask is in clipboard, I select sublayer Illinois
After doing a paste in front, the mask (star shape) is not in the sublayer, but above
Drag the star shape down one in to the sublayer Illinois, select entire sublayer(use radio button right of the layer name)
    and make clip mask

  • How to keep layer effects on one layer from affecting an other layer?

    Hello:
I am quite new to Ps and though I am reading as much as possible I could still use a bit more help.
I have found that when I use the Layer Styles on one layer and then make a new layer or select a shape that creates a new layer that when I go to add Styles to the new layer/new shape the previous layer is affected by how I set the Bevel & Emboss, Direction, Altitude, Drop Shadow etc etc.
    For instance, let's say I have a ...
BG > New Layer > draw an ellipse and then add a Bevel with an  > Angle of 89 and an Altitude of 30 and then I add a New Layer > open the Styles and go to change the Angle to say +89 or whatever and the Altitude to say 45 ... the first Layer/Shape Effects change.
Can someone tell me how I can keep one Layer from being affected by an other Layers Effects'?
I have found that if I Rasterize a Layer Effect that I can add a "double" effect on the same layer but I haven't tried the to do this with separate layers. However, for most of the work I am doing I cannot use the Raster because everything needs to be true vectors.
I would certainly and greatly appreciate any ideas/advice that anyone may have. If you need more info from me or a better explanation I will try to better explain.
    I have a Dell Laptop/Windows 7 Home Premium that's a 64 bit
Thank you in advance for your time

  • Clipping Mask Effects in Fireworks CS4?

    Hello everyone,
I was initially trained on Adobe Illustrator, and over time
have gotten very pretty comfortable with it. Not too long ago I
started making mock ups in Illustrator, and would use the crop tool
to export particular pieces (buttons and banners) of my mock up
    into Dreamweaver tables.
But I recently got CS4, and now I'm all screwed up!
Unlike CS3, CS4 Illustrator does not appear to have the crop
area function. I can no longer export select pieces of my artwork.
I recently found out that this 'crop area' feature exists in
Fireworks CS4, so lately I've been trying to learn fireworks.
The problem I have with fireworks though, is that there
doesn't seem to be a clipping mask feature. I did stumble upon
something called 'group as mask' under the modify menu. But I don't
understand it's function, as it works nothing at all like
    Illustrators clipping mask.
Clipping mask is such a useful design feature, and I can't
bear the thought of doing without it.
I'm relatively new to graphic and web design, so here's to
hoping some experienced users can help me out with this!
    Cheers,
    Cory
PS: Please don't tell me the solution to all this is
photoshop! So tired of switching applications :)

I doubt you'll find many - if any - telling you the answer is
    Photoshop
    in this forum. ;-)
The term clipping mask isn't really part of the FW
    vocabulary, but FW
works very well with vectors and that is pretty much what a
    clipping
mask is - a path used to mask part of an image.
FW can mask objects using vectors or bitmaps. Here's some
    instructions
to create a simple vector mask.
    Open an image in FW.
Select the Rectangle tool from the Vector tool area of the
    Tools panel.
    Draw a rectangle.
position it where you want the mask to be.
Cut the rectangle (Ctrl+X or Command+X for Mac)
Select the image using the Pointer tool.
Go to Edit > Paste as Mask.
Your image is now masked by a vector. Both objects remain
    editable.
There is much more you can do; this is just a simple example.

  • Cropping just one layer in CS6?

I have multiple layers. I lock the other layers and turn them off (the "eye" is turned off).
I attempt to crop the ONE layer that's selected. All layers are cropped.
What am I doing wrong? I searched tutorials and didn't find this issue,
I did go through the tutorial with the new crop functions.

    Hi Anita,
Here is an illustrated version of what R_Kelly is recommending:
In the example below I have a file with multiple layers. The top layer (hidden in this illustration) is too large and will cover up the other layers. It needs to be "cropped".  The recommended way to crop that layer would be to make a layer mask. Click here for a some great tutorials about  layers and layer masks. A quick and easy way to crop it would be to do the following steps.
Using one of the selection tools, create a selection that represents the shape you want for your layer. In this example, I used the rectangular marquee tool. Be sure you've targeted the correct layer when you make the selection.
Once the selection is made, choose Select > Inverse. This will select all the pixels outside of the original selection.
To remove the unwanted pixels, choose Edit > Clear. The layers below your newly cropped layer should be visible now.
    I hope this helps,
    Luanne

  • I want to make just one layer smaller

I have two maps of same area (different years) and I want to match them up as one map.  I can load them both as layers and make the older map transparent so that I can see through to newer map, but older map is larger than the newer map (in the background).  I can move the transparent map but I cannot make just the transparent map smaller to fit over the other map.  I will also need to rotate the map slightly.  When I try to resize it changes both maps.  I have tried the transform and the move tool.  So how can I make one layer smaller and rotate it it leaving the other layer intact?

    We went over this yesterday:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1184026?tstart=30
Did it not work for you?

  • Why does the clipping mask add a thin outline?

I'm making a realistic looking customizer (similar to NikeiD and Reebok YOUR). I used the pen tool and pathfinder to make each zone (shape). After I made all the zones I used the clipping mask on every zone to include the photo of the pad so the colored zone looks realistic.
However, once I make the clipping mask on all the zones, about a 1px gap appears between all the zones. How do I fix this so there is no gap between the zones (fyi: I used the divide and trim pathfinder tool so there is no space between the zones in outline view)?
PS: I'm aware that I can turn off anti-aliasing in the preferences, but that doesn't slove the problem for web, only print.
Below is an example of what I'm talking about.
I hope someone can help me with this annoying issue. Thank you

Unfortunately, that didn't work. There are still gaps between the zones (PNG files).

  • Crop photo for just ONE layer in CS6

    I have 2 layers.
One photo was PLACED on each layer.
I turn off the other layer so thet the "eye" icon is no longer seem.
I crop photo in the active layer but remaining layer photo get cropped too.
What am I doing wrong? I did the tutorial for the new crop tool.

    Charles,
I did all the relevent Adobe PS tutorials plus those I googled done by third parties. I can't find the PS page now, but you know the one I mean, 20+ video tutorial links on the page. None address layers while cropping.
Does this mean I need to do masks, if so, doesn't this add unnecessary data/K to the file since masks cover and don't delete? I'll crop originals before I bring in then, then mask from there.
Thank you, I was ticked off not understanding.

  • How do you resize just one layer & how do I make this layer not blur when enlarged?

I am trying to drop a video game sprite into a much larger image and I wish to make the sprite bigger.  Every time I use CTRL + T  just to size the layer by dragging the mouse, once I hit the check mark it blurs the image instead of keeping it looking pixelated.  How do I avoid this?  (Using Elements 7)

    The following should help.
    1. Open your sprite and instead of transform (defaults to bicubic hence the blurring)
use Image>Resize>Image Size set to resample-constain proportions-nearest neighbor)
You will have to resize the sprite before you copy and paste (move) into the bigger image.
The only hard part is setting the right size.
    2. After you resize then copy to your bigger image.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ipad ical calendar does not sync to macboook - just one (main) calendar ical

One of my ical calendaars was delted from my Macbook.  It is on my ipad but will not sync to my macbook.  Other calendars will sync.
I believe that I deleted a critical files from my Macbook.    Note that I have recovered the calender events themselves from time machine.  However I have not imported them into my macbook ical since 1) then I will have double on my ipad and 2) i have to individuall import more than 4000+ events and each import is about 5 clicks.
I have doen allt he sync resetting so that everything else except this one calendar will sync.  It makes me thik that somehow there is no place on my Macbook to receive the calendar from the ipad.????
Thank you so much for your help.

    SOLVED it!!!
I bought a program called iExplorer for €35.
It allows you to see what is on my external device - ipad in this case - and then to export it.
I exported the  missing calendar.  When I reopened ical it was there - all 4000 entires.  There were a few mess ups in the all day events but 15 minutes of cleaning took care of that.

  • PS CS6 - Layer Clipping Mask

In CS6, the clipping mask is just an icon in the lower right of the layer icon in the palette. How do I easily drag it to another layer to create the same clipping mask? In previous Photoshops, you could option drag it to other layers/folder to quickly add the masks.

    I think this explains it.

  • Clipping mask making everything just disappear

I am trying to make a gear have that nice mettalic shine using the clipping mask, but everytime I make the command the whole thing just dissapears.  I am using the pen tool to make 4 triangles with different shades of grey. I then group the triangles, put a radial blur on them and place them under the gear that I created.  I select them all and do the clipping mask command, but instead of it being a gear with that radial shine, the whole thing disappears except for the outline of the triangle.  HELP!!!  I'M STUCK AND I'VE TRIED EVERYTHING (except the right thing)!!!

Usually when everything dispaears then what you intended to use for a clipping mask, is not what happened. Your top most object in the selection is used for the clipping mask.
I fill my clipping mask with a dummy color, to confirm I have my layering correct, the color goes away after the mask command. You can also clean up your document by putting only what you wnat to mask, along with the clipping mask on a new layer, then hit the round button after the layer name to select all in the layer, and mask.

  • URGH! Make clipping mask/path out of a placed image?!

I'm having major issues. I'm a n00b at Illustrator, though.
I need to make a placed photo into a clipping path, and I can't figure out how to do it correctly.
It's homework for a college course in Digital Illustration. I need to recreate a photo using only shapes in Illustrator, and to do so, we're supposed to make the photo into a clipping path so that when we draw the shapes on it, the shapes won't leave the bounding box of the photo and onto the white space of the document.
I know to make the clipping mask, you just go to object > clipping mask > make... but every time I do it, and I draw on the image, the shapes still leave the image, so I must not be doing it correctly.
ANY help would be great. I'm about ready to rip my hair out.
    Thank you!

    Hola Carlos,
Thank you so much for you help!!
    your first suggestion worked wonderfully!!
however, i have one more question ... for Carlos or anyone else
i am suppose to delete the original circle but not matter what i do ... select it and hit the delete key, select the layer it's on and hit the trash can icon or even cutting it ... the Edit menu says the actions have taken place but when i hover over the area afterward the path is or seems to still be present.
i have tried and tried to look for an answer in the manual, FAQ's and have even Googled for an answer but i cannot find any info at all about how to delete a path ~ most of all under this particular circumstance. arg!
i've looked at the rest of the tut and i think if i can get past this point i'll be great.
i am wondering if it even matters rather i delete this original path.
any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks again for your time
ps. i was just thinking ... can this original path/circle even really be deleted? isn't it necessary to keep the shape of the object and/or a part of the mask that gives the object its appearance?

  • Clipping mask vs. selection?

I want to restrict my painting to only part of an image.
    1. How is doing this with a clipping mask different from just making a selection and painting within a selection?
    2. How can I make a clipping mask to do this?
    Thanks.

Actually with anti-aliased or softened edges of a Selection multiple brush-strokes can produce a different result than if the Layer is clipping masked (or has a Layer Mask).
Good point! The effect would be the same as painting once each on multiple, stacked clipping masks? I think it would. My point was that selection = clipping mask = layer mask (something which interests me greatly). I wonder if there are any other ways in which they're not the same.
